    Really depends on what you want to achieve and what pedals you're using. You need to think about signal flow. For example, an EQ into a compressor would result in any EQ boost you make being more tightly controlled. But the other way around, you're controlling the signal first and then shaping it.
    I personally put my compressor first because I like my pedals reacting to a controlled signal. But it's cool to experiment. When I record in my DAW, I enjoy moving the order of my plugins around to see how it changes the sound.

      I run my Comp first also. I find its the best for my signal chain for what I use.

    I've been using the BP1C for 6 months now. Such a magnificent pre/DI. I've been looking forward to the release of the BC1 for a while now. Ordered one. Great reviews guys.

    I bet they'll make a compact BC1. That thing is massive

    LOVE having a compressor in my signal, tightens everything up

    I don’t like compression before an envelope filter or after a delay. So I think it very much depends on what other effects types you use. Putting it last is redundant. As additional compression is almost always added to the bass by studio engineers and front of house.

    I have a few and i like it infront of my preamp with every other Pedal in Front . Sound amazing with a multiband. Very good topic Video.

    I have been using a comp at the end for a couple years now, where I used to throw it at the front of the chain. I like it better at the end, plus if you have a sweet comp at the end but also have a dirty/crunchy comp hanging around, the crunchy one can be used on and off for a grinding boost.

    Why not both? A compressor at the beginning of the signal chain and one at the end. 🙌 Also, Jayme's got hella groove 🤌

      Agreed, I have a BBE maxcom, channel 1 is first in my chain, channel 2 even goes in the loop of my amp. First one makes the grit of my sansamp more consistent and second one takes care of the peaks, my tone quest is over since 2 years almost.

      @@pideuhweuh8459would you mind sharing the setting for that 2 channel compressor in your bass rig?

    • @pideuhweuh8459
      @pideuhweuh8459 8 місяців тому

      @@realtruenorth Sure, same on both channels but keep in mind I'm far from a compressor expert
      Threshold: 0
      Ratio: 5
      Attack: 0
      Release: 4
      Set output to match unity gain
      Maximizer is Off on Channel 1 and set to 4 on both controls (but sharing these is quite pointless as ideal settings will really depends on the rest of your rig)

    You guys should review the Walrus Audio compressor; Mira! Nobody really has a good review on it as far as bass goes, and I can’t think of a better channel/group to bring it to light!

    I've got a $20 Beringer cs400, and that is the only pedal that I never turn off and always use.
    It works perfectly and is noise free, although it has less functions than something like the bc1

    The BC1 is an nice piece of equipment. My only complaint is that there is no meter/LED's that give compression gain reduction feedback. cheers.

    Nice review! I am looking forward to mine in September. So you have it set so that the signal is Bass - instrument in - to BP1 - then D/I out of BP1 to Line In on the BC1 and then DI on the BC1? Is that right? Thus, you never put the BC1 in the effect chain of the BP1..

    I like compressor... in the middle ! Just after the envelop filter & the octaver, but before my Anasound Savage (Klon clone) and my OD (I love to stack) and then my Omnifuzz (Signal Cheyne) which a pickup sim (so you can put it every where), then reverb & delay.

    I use the Empress Bass compressor at the beginning and a Boss limiter at the end. The two you are demonstrating are far too large and unwieldy for my board. Probably better for just having around the studio.

    It would’ve been an opportunity to see the compressor in action if you would have slammed fx likes octave filters , drives , or octave pedals and see how the compressor tames them. Please that video

    Thoughts on using Hyperluminal for this application anyone???

    • @jasonjump6019
      @jasonjump6019 Рік тому

      I’ve been keeping mine at the front of my chain for fear of taming envelope/chorus/flanger too much, but I have tried putting the HL after fuzz/distortion to tame them-it tightens thing up, but then again it also adds more compression to a compressed signal at that point. I don’t know what placement for compression is best, but I do know getting every pedal on the pedalboard to unity volume really helps taking out the frustration and over-tweaking.

    I asked Alex Webster's luthier what bass compressor he would recommend and he said that hands down the best bass compression pedal for studio or live is the Seymour Duncan "Studio Bass pedal". I'd rather take his word for it then to flounder buying pedal after pedal trying to determine which one is good or not. It's $169 btw.

    Now they need to make a pultec pedal so you can really get a studio tone from your pedalboard.

    There are plenty of pedal compressors out there. Most pedal comps for bass sound like a particularly stinky flatulent vapour smells to me. 🥺 🤮
    Musical bass compressor pedals are a much rarer beast. You know, the ones that actually enhance the way your bass sits in the mix. Live or recorded. Without killing harmonics dynamics & sounding squished & 2 dimensional to the point where you sound like you are playing in the $#!t pit of an outhouse dunny. Quality product with a quality price. Well thought out & I wish caveman every success.
    If you cant afford this try the Empress effects bass comp which sounds damn nice as well.

    Did he say that you don't often see a release control on compressor pedals? I don't think I've ever played one without. Some don't have an attack control like the Ampeg but rarely no release knob.

    • @sparella
      @sparella Рік тому +1

      It's true that most don't. Only in the past 15 years or so have fully featured compressor pedals come out, with ratio and release. When the MXR one came out, it was a big deal.

  • @crapadopalese

    5:15 - this comparison is pretty meaningless. You didn't match the levels so when you activate the compressor the overall volume is louder and then with parallel it gets even louder. This is 101 for comparing compressed/uncompressed signals - you must match levels otherwise the louder signal sounds "better" just by being loud and not due to the compression.

  • @bugbass

    You really should gain match the soundclips so we can hear the actual sound differences. As is its useless.

    If you play a real amp i lean a full tube amp, no use to put this at the end....tubes are naturaly compressing.
    Compressor In front for shure of every other pedal to attack them properly
