How Britain Stole $45 Trillion from India with Trains | Empires of Dirt
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 сер 2020
- There is a misguided idea that India should be grateful for the democracy, law and trains that the British Empire brought to their country. But along with these ‘gifts’, Britain also stole $45 trillion from India during its long and oppressive rule, which culminated in the biggest mass migration in human history during the Partition of India and Pakistan.
And those beloved trains? They became the sites of mass slaughter as violent clashes occurred when over four million people were uprooted from their homes and forced to trek to a Muslim-majority Pakistan and a Hindu-majority India. VICE World News host Zing Tsjeng reveals exactly why India shouldn’t be grateful for their trains.

Let's hope you widen this, Instead of always British Empire centric… how Portugal/Spain/France exploit their empires.
And journalists… if you were covering history properly, you could at least adopt a neutral tone instead of emotiveness to one side. One is a documentary with vivid language, the latter is virtue signalling.

@People who Use youtube and who told you that? we know about both sides of the coin, and thus can clearly say that the cons of the empire outweigh the pros.
You on the other hand, have no idea what the british empire did, and thus, can say that india should be thankful.
@People who Use youtube in indian history, 2 people - Akbar and Ashoka, nearly achieved a united India under common rule. Do you think in 200 years of fast improving communication services, no one could have united india? And then, just like the french revolutions, india couldn't have turned to democracy?
India was the LARGEST economy of the world, 23% share of the world gdp at that time. I don't think a country that rich would have been left in ruins without british "help". British was able to achieve unification because of its small size. India being the 7 th largest country, finds that difficult to do.
@People who Use youtube dude wtf is even your point? I know that a part of me is British, and it will never change. And honestly, i like it.
What i cannot bear is people claiming that the British Empire PURPOSEFULLY helped India, or any other country. You rule a country for 200 years, loot 45 trillion dollars from it, and killed more than 30 million people(way more). You introduce railways for your OWN good, so that you can transport loot material faster through the country. English Language was introduced to form a group of Indians, who were Indian in skin color, but British in mannerisms, so that British could communicate with the Indians. NONE of the changes were made to HELP Indians. At the end of a 200 year tyranny, the country comes out democratic, and you deserve thankfulness?
I don't expect Britain to pay back money it took, because how do you pay for innocent lives that were lost to the Empire? And, the present generation cannot be blamed for their ancestors' mistakes
All I ask is for the British to realize what it did was wrong, and to be sorry of what their ancestors did.
India doesn't need your money, as it is we have crossed your gdp.
just realize what you did was wrong.
Exactly. Most countries today have biased pro-nationalist history books.

India's weakness was disunity among the small kingdoms, internal wars, religious differences and the absence of a strong empire after the Marathas. The British used this situation to the fullest to colonise India.
Actually before the Britishers arrived , there’s already a major genocide happening by Mughals particularly Aurangzeb.
Maratha empire rose to prominence but after 30 years of constant warfare as well as the unity factor of Shivaji was no more . Marathas was fighting against Mughals , Portuguese in Goa , nizam at Hyderabad, South Indian kings but after got won , they didn’t got a chance to consolidate rather it breaks off very easily in internal fighting .
Britishers did nothing just exploited the weakness by divide and rule policy , Indian kings hated each other more and they didn’t see Britishers as something of a coloniser at first . It’s just a trading company.
Fighting was there , but it comes with disunity among smaller kingdoms .
When you say British dont include ordinary working class people, they got nothing from slavery or india , but like mugs we celebrated empire day while living in poverty. So get over it.
u are one hundered percent correct, they saw the divide, and they exploited that, we were our worst enemies, we could of been the greatest counhtry on earth if hindus and muslims could just live together and understand at the end of the day , we r the same, we dont need two countries/

It wasn’t that bad
the British royal are actually German background look it up
@Tom Johnson yep prime example of denial right here. British good , nazi bad.
Tom Johnson The British empire was just as bad as Nazi Germany. Scientific racism (the basis of the Nazi ideology) was born in Britain. Over a course of four centuries the British empire was the key instigator of the systematic annihilation of the indigenous cultures of three entire continents as they colonized their lands. Entire peoples and languages that no longer exist thanks to British colonialism. The British enslaved millions of Africans and purposefully caused mass famines killing millions in places ranging from Ireland to Bengal. The British didn’t solely plunder the Indian subcontinent, but also large swathes of East Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. As it occupied all of these places, the British empire played on sectarian/ethnic/religious tensions and conflict in the lands of the people they subjugated in order to effectively rule. This is still the basis for major contemporary conflicts all over the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Africa.
All of these atrocities are but a few of the crimes committed by the British Empire and can easily compete with those of Nazi Germany. This also applies to many European Empires including the Belgian, French, Spanish and Portuguese Empires. The reason that these empires were not seen to be as bad as Nazi Germany is because they mostly targeted non-whites whom the Europeans considered as barely human and inherently inferior to them. Nazi Germany is solely seen as this paragon of evil (rightly so, but other European empires are just as bad) is because Nazi Germany did to Europeans what European colonialism did to the rest of the planet for centuries.
Tom Johnson Everyone who was occupied by the British Empire: the British Empire was terrible and killed, enslaved and subjugated millions while looting their lands and resources

Experts agree that the period from 1880 to 1920 - the height of Britain’s imperial power - was particularly devastating for India. Comprehensive population censuses carried out by the colonial regime beginning in the 1880s reveal that the death rate increased considerably during this period, from 37.2 deaths per 1,000 people in the 1880s to 44.2 in the 1910s. @@MS-ux6ze don't laugh you thief. One day UK will be doomed because of their misdeeds. Karma never spare anyone 👍
@Amelia Jones Atheist myself but it certainly seems like the UK is intent on making itself suffer- and its past, present, and future outlook are inherently warped by the evil legacy of its empire.
As Franz Fanon wrote (I'm very poorly referencing here, mind)- European imperialism created, in effect- the degeneration of both the colonized and the colonizer- in the case of the colonizer (such as Britain) it comes from the racialized, ethnicized, religious notions of supremacy and bigotry- it comes from the development and economic dependence on plunder and dehumanization of the rest of the world- and so on.
You can see it with the UK's slow descent from grace (if it can ever be said to have been in grace- certainly not as empire, not any rightful grace anyways) since the loss of its empire. And even to this day, with the self-destructive nature of British politics (and that of the whole Anglosphere, which I'll count as in part other than the US which is its own thing and nearing its own decline/rot). There's an inherent racism and ethnocentricism in British identity stemming from its history as empire- there's an inherent alienation from much of humanity, or even much of Europe as the "other" in contrast to the Brit- it's a social ill that will likely remain for generations onwards due to the evils of empire.

In over 2000 years of documented history, only two men have come close to unifying the subcontinent - Ashoka and Aurangazeb. The former reigned over it for a little over 15 years and latter for about 25. Outside the Mauryas and the Mughals, no other empire even sought to carve a political union out of the subcontinent. Though it has been a geographical unity of sorts, identified by people from other regions as the land beyond the Indus, the subcontinent has never been seen as a political entity. Neither by people living within or outside.
During the first half of 18th century, the Mughal empire slowly collapsed. Using this period of Mughal weakness, the Marathas, the Rajputs, the Jats and various Nawabs established themselves as independent rules and gained control over various parts of the subcontinent, leading to political fragmentation. Without the British, various rulers of the subcontinent would have continued to fight against each other (like they always) and the region might or might not have fragmented further.
This is not to say that the British united India as a political union. In the British, Indians had a foe to unite against. Without their suppressive rule, the country would have been divided as multiple principalities and statelets fighting with or against each other.

Lakshman Seth did this to get control of the business. It was just like conflicts between Chinese merchants and emperors. So, it's the Indian Hindu kings and merchants who actually helped the British to take on Mughal emperors. Because under mughal rule, India was rich and so-called lower catse Indians started working in textile mills and they converted to Islam leaving Hindu caste system which is dominated by upper caste who were kings, merchants, priests. Just a example of my south asia
south asia was divided in many kindoms before British arrival.. the south asian kingdoms were very "poor comparin to Western power 'at that time" and majority tax revenue was from agriculture
So then many kings there decided to let Westerners "portugees , etc to open the trade and industries in large scale where British empire not only opened the industries but also ruled over subcontinent ( very clever ) and created utilities and employment then economy rises for both Britain and south asian
From the beginning , south asian had been rising voice against British empire for governing the country except British ( as British didn't hav ancestral history) which resulted today's independent countries "india , pakistan, etc
After gaining independence, we can clearly see the downfall in economy where the new countries again fought in the name of land and government was higly corrupted ( i'm talkin abt after the independence but today is different )
All the colonized counties had gained many utilities and great social and political reform bcz of British empire yah but no one appreciate " cuz there's a word which is pretty well known ie. LOOT
Which is baseless cuz All those colonized countries were part of British empire so the wealth is also part of it where british took many ancient stuffs in their mainland Britain ( central government) now some countries want to claim and want britain to put them back where they actually belong
I guess its their "colonized countries" own fault that they wanted full independence which make them new independent countries so baseless to claim those stuffs as We human also belong to "one" civilisation so then why dont we all live together ?? It was better to be part of Britian where the ancient history could be shared as one country Or Gaining independence and do some development and learning the history instead of scratchin history

If British had not conquered vast territories within India and brought it under a single rule:
There would be no unified India. Instead there would have been multiple principalities which would have undergone different political, social and cultural histories to become different countries.
Without unification, social reforms would have been hard to come by and the country or the principalities would have been socially regressive.
Strong rulers would have turned the fortune of a few principalities and made it richer, however the rest of the country would have been much poorer than what they are today. Condition of states with fewer resources would have been much worse.
With access to education restricted to an elite few, large portions of the country would still have been illiterate.
Illiteracy would have led to slow industrialization and advancement in science and technology.
Caste would have played a much more significant role in day to day life (than it does today) and would have hampered growth.
There is a good chance China would have annexed a few statelets with its territory.
There would be no unified religion called hinduism. Instead the various sects of modern day hinduism would have become independent religions. Hindi would have met the same fate.
