  • In summer 2015 I decided to change from a passive UA-cam viewer to the role of an active UA-cam creator. Since then I learned a lot. Some things I believe are interesting for you if you think about starting your channel, but most of it is also interesting, maybe even important for viewers.
    This is why I would like to let you see behind the scenes and discuss the vital question: Why to become a UA-cam creator and why to continue to be one? The answering of this question should also lead to understanding some of the changes on this channel for 2018.
    It is nine months since my last update in April. Back then this channel had around 20’000 subscribers. Today, it has more than 50’000. I take this fact as feedback that many of you like the content it provides.

    My dear viewers
    Thank you very much for your overwhelming support! This video hit 10'000 viewers in no time and it was even not about technology. What a surprise. And many, many very positive comments to encourage me. You cannot imagine how rewarding it is to read through all of them. Be sure I read and enjoyed each of it, but it will take time to answer all of them. And the answers will be shorter than usual because only today I got more than 700 comments (not only for this video). I will give my best to keep this channel running. Promised
    See you next Sunday morning, 8AM my time.

      No, you don't have to respond to each and every comment when not concerning technical topics. Post like this is just to encourage you to overlook the negative as best you can.
      Your "swiss accent" is fine. Your english is better than most, and the fact that it is not your native language keeps us at equal disadvantage. Following an english/american talking like a Gatling gun can be challenging when the topic already is taxing my brain. I for one appreciate you're not presenting it in switzerdeutsch. Then I would have a hard time following it. ;-)
      About one year ago I put 3 fingers in a wood planer, so I already know how a bruised finger looks like. People focusing on that is probably not your intended audience anyway. ATM you have almost 1900 thumbs up and 8 thumbs down. I pretty much think that says it all! Keep doing what you do so well, gloves or not!

    Oh man... I never saw any of those negative comments and I love your intro "the guy with the Swiss accent". Your videos are the best. I am shocked that you received negative comments, but even more so that they would almost cause you to stop creating content. I am so very glad you carry on! Usually I'd just give a thumbs-up to the other people that have already said basically the same thing, but somehow leaving a "full" comment makes me feel better... Andreas, please try to ignore the idiots!!!! The HUGE majority of people that are legitimately interested in your fantastic content don't give a DAMN about your accent or your fingers!!!

    Hey Andreas, just wanted you to know that I really appreciate the depth of knowledge you bring to your channel and really the professionalism with which you conduct your episodes. As an engineer myself, I know the stuff is not necessarily easy to explain but you do an excellent job of it. I've recently watched your series (several times) on Lora technology and found them very informative. So thank you

    Andreas,
    In addition to fully agreeing with the other positive commentators, I'd like to add that I appreciate your organized approach. You are one of the few UA-camrs that clearly demonstrate a solid electronics engineering approach in your content. You don't just "mess around" with boards or show off cool things you've built. In addition to building and testing, you take the time to show organized goals, hypotheses, test planning, analysis and conclusions. This content is rare and crucial for success as an engineer.
    Thank you!
    My goal as a UA-cam consumer this year is to adjust my previous spending on things like "Cable TV"content into providing some financial support to valued creators like yourself via Patreon (or similar).
    All the best,
    Tom

    Thanks for your interesting and useful content, Andreas! It's good to know you also have an Amazon affiliate link. Maybe you should post it in the description, I would like to support you with my Amazon purchases if at all possible.
    Please continue your channel - it's one of UA-cam's greatest in my opinion. But please do it primarily for your own passion, and try to get (well-deserved) money for it secondary. If you mostly do it for money, and try to motivate yourself from that, your channel will probably end up as all the other channels, sending irrelevant click-bait garbage.
    So, my sincere and deepest respect and appreciation goes to you, Mr. Spiess - your contribution lifts the average quality of UA-cam content considerably!

    Thanks Andreas, especially for the words about community and it's effects on creators. Some of us are here just for the community and sharing interesting things we learn along our own journey. It's sad when people fail to realize that the comments section of every video on a creator's channel creates a notification for that creator. Larger comments sections become open threads for community interaction, but it is no different than a public forum thread with the original poster set as the content creator. Every comment on every youtube channel is tied to someone that is getting notifications on their phone or desktop. It's something everyone should remember.
    I appreciate everything you share. Your enabling hobbyists like me to learn and do far more than I would ever manage to do otherwise.
    Thanks again,

    But I *like* the accent. It's distinctive, but it's also different and that's got value of itself. I find "the guy with the Swiss accent" thing amusing, where Daaave at EeeeevBlog's voice is a bit irritating. Andrea's content is always well presented and usually well thought out. And it's good to watch just to see what someone else does, and how they do things.

I'm a subscriber of your channel and, when I can't sleep at night (due to a handycap) for some hours, I watch your videos to learn something as I do similar projects at my home. I highly appreciate your effords and work you invest in your productions. The quality and contents are much better than most of the manufacturers technical training webinars which I've seen so far.
    It's sad that people who are doing something good for the society are facing more and more resistance from a small amount of uneducated or mental ill people. I refer to news about rescuers, firemen, police. And I wonder where will this lead to in 10 years?

    I am glad you stuck around. Your content has a strong intersection with my interests. I value and appreciate what you do. I recently had to reduce all my Patreon support because I am supporting a sick friend. When things are resolved I will be glad to help sponsor your content through Patreon.
    I hate trolls. Some people are just naturally jerks, but certainly many troll just want to get attention. It may be best to just thumb them down and/or report them. If we engage them then we are giving them the attention they desire. I wish UA-cam had a better way to deal with trolls. I feel like comments on UA-cam aren’t well managed, probably because they are not a strongly monetizable feature.

    I know you because of the crimping video. That changed my life and hobby and I can never be grateful enough. Then I started watching a bit more of your channel and eventually subscribed. I love the fact that you produce good quality videos which are oriented towards the hobbyist (ie do not require thousands of dollars or ultra expensive equipment) and that are always or most always constructive: you teach us how to build, what to build and use instead of a speculative teardown of equipment. Great job!

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for your nice words! Indeed, I try to use inexpensive materials because I know not everybody can afford expensive equipment. And often, the cheaper things are good enough to learn and have fun.

    Your grasp of logic is a huge factor in why I like your videos. It literally makes learning easy with the way you present and investigate in a logical way.
    Also, English with Swiss accent is actually easier to understand than maybe 50% of the population of England, so worry not on that front!

  • @youpattube1
    @youpattube1 6 років тому +4

    It is difficult not to take derogatory comments to heart. You might try just skimming the comment and moving on if it is mean.
    The people who make fun of your accent have only one tooth left in their head and hate anybody you doesn't have a hillbilly accent.
    A foriegn accent should immediately command respect for someone who has put in the mental effort to learn another language.
    I would venture to say that none, zero, not one of the accent mockers is fluent in a second language.

    • @DCFusor
      @DCFusor 6 років тому

      As someone with few teeth in my head and a hillbilly accent who nevertheless gets troll comments on my own channel, I'd warn about over generalizing. Though I agree that children of whatever age can be doggone mean. The key is to realize just that - they're kids who don't know any better. A little faith in what you know you are goes a long way towards helping ignore the losers (who often can't even spell loser - they think it's looser, the opposite of tight, from never having read anything but other illiterates on the internet - a dead giveaway).

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  6 років тому

      Both of you are right, but still, it was not easy to overread these comments. With all these comments it for sure will become easier :-) Thank you.

    Hi, great vids, there is an old english saying "you can not please all of the people all of the time". And of course there are just nasty, jealous people who have little else to do other than critisise. Ingore them all and celebrate your sucesses. Bet those people who made fun of your Swiss origins could not speak swiss as good as your technical engish is. Injured hands? That just sucks when people take the micky. A lot if most people in the world could not do what you do with electronics so if the best thing pople can do is complain tell them to gp get a life, get out more. Its not an issue as far as thinking people are concerned, dont make it one, because its not. Hey keep up the good work.

    Great video. As a UA-cam creator my self I know the struggle. I'm at about 1800 subscribers. It's expensive to be a creator it involves a lot of time and money for equipment. Luckily I love to shoot the videos and edit them. My videos is about Homesteading and off grid living but one of my passions is developing electronics. Greetings from Andreas on Off Grid Sweden.
