This has been one of the coolest fights in a long time in my opinion. Laudna pushing Imogen and using Feather Fall while avoiding an attack with Mirror Image was so cinematic!
I screamed at the screen when Marisha said she has Shield. Because had she cast it, it would've used up the reaction she needed for Feather Fall... and she only would've have realized it on the way down... goldfishing herself and Imogen at once.
As a side note, being a DM myself for nearly 30 years. Grapple CANNOT be used as an opportunity attack since opportunity attacks are Reactionary Manuever and grapple is an Attack Action. Was surprised to see that Matt didn't know this when he had the demon opportunity attack Ashton with a grapple attack.
Also, Fearne should not have been able to shapeshift into the bird (1 action due to her sub-class) and then pick up FCG in the same round ( another Action to pick up friendlies). Her movement also would have only been half as far once she picked up FCG. I know people will say "Bend the rules to make the gamr fun." I agree to a point, but combat rules such as Opportunity Attacks and number of Actions allowed in a round should NOT be fudged as it completely eradicates the usage of rules in any sense. There has to be consistency especially when it comes to combat.
you’re gonna hate me for this but it really does depend on what you classify actions and bonus actions. Matt has been pretty consistent with saying that picking something up is a bonus action or free action if it’s especially trivial. There is actually a bit of a debate about whether picking something up is an action or bonus action. And the viewpoint about it being a bonus action makes sense. A turn is 6 seconds. I doubt it would take 6 seconds for Ferne to turn into a bird. I can easily see her turning into a bird and picking up FCG in that amount of time. Technically opening a door is an action but many DMs just make it a free or bonus action especially if the door is obviously unlocked. It’s just one of those things that is kinda up to the DM. Matt does give his players a lot of latitude but I think this is a legitimate case of home brew rules. In many of the official books it actually says that you can change things to suit your experience.
I love how Laura instantly breaks herself, has to stop talking mid sentence and just spends the next minute trying to quietly hold in a giggle-fit. With Matt being the only one to notice and just silently giving her a judging and disappointed head shake.
For those loving the Betrayer God lore: I trust you've seen EXU:Calamity. For anyone reading this who hasn't, go fix your life right now-it's only four episodes long.
"Only four episodes" - still contains enough emotional damage for an entire campaign or two. But yes, I will keep watching them and I will keep crying.
Fearne: "I don't really care for the Gods." *Tall, handsome, devil fiend with an accent shows up* : "An eternity of purpose, strength, and *pleasures* ." Fearne: "Pleasures you say?"
I would like to state, there is a special type of terror watching Matthew Mercer mark down every time someone makes a "Grundle Flower" joke. Don't anger the Mercer, dey gonna die!
@@danielknapp3141 Matt mispronounced the name of the flower they were going to look for. It was supposed to be perinum. He said perinium. Perinium is the anatomical term for the taint. The spot between your butthole and scrotum (or vulva).
A lot of folks believed that sword to be the Arm* of Betrayer belonging to the demon prince of indulgence. AKA the horny demon prince. They’re gonna get along like a house on fire (**ooops!, it's not an AoB, just a sentient weapon)
I remember in Tal's between the sheets ep he had said something like making a decision is better than doing nothing because then you're left to the whim of circumstance. Something like that. It's stuck with me since!
I imagine CR and D20 have installed matching red telephones in the studio and the dome so that Brennan can appear as needed, whenever a certain newly minted pact is invoked.
This episode raises a pretty big flaw in Ludinus's plan: once the gods are gone, what's to stop the Demon Princes from comming into the Material Plane and just taking over?
I've been wondering something a little different. If a mortal can achieve God hood like the Raven queen did. What's keeping Predathos from using Exandria like a garden to harvest when the mortals are ripe as a god?
Along with that, iirc the Chained Oblivion is kind of its own weird thing. Like it's considered a Betrayer God by the world's religions to simplify things, or to cover up that it's something worse and more powerful than the Betrayers. Maybe Predathos would go after it, or maybe not. And if not, then the world only lasts for as long as the seals binding it hold.
I was expecting the devil guy to be Zerxus, but there's still hope for an appearance if Bell's Hells go down that path and I'm sure Matt has Luis on speed dial if the story calls for Zerxus to become involved. Also, would be awesome to possibly see a return of Joe Manganiello as Arkhan, though he might be too powerful as he also wields the hand of Vecna.
If it was Zerxus would have expected Luis to show up there. I’m not sure what being a servant to Asmdous would have done to him because he did die during the Calamity he could have come back and be wandering around. Only change that happened to him at first was growing swept back horns
YES. And I feel the need to over share: guess what plays in my brain every time Orym makes a jump that should be physically impossible for someone his size? Yes. THAT sound.
This is my FIRST time watching after getting fully caught up. I started with this campaign after getting introduced by my friend, and im so excited to share this with you all.
I'm on a similar track. I discovered C1 about a year and a half ago. I started watching C1... and then I started watching C3 currently while binging C1 and then C2. I finally caught up to waiting for the next episode I feel like not that long ago. maybe a month or so. there was that void of not being able to just binge all day. but also the excitement of waiting for the next with a bunch of folks. so... hi. me too.
@@dorianr4770 I started with this one, caught up after months of watching, and this week have moved on to Vox Machina stuff. I read all the VMO comics, started the show, and have been heavily reading into general Exandria lore.
I'm browsing the comments before watching the episode like a fool and this is an absolutely buckwild sentence to encounter with no context, it's gotta be said.
@@AmorceaI played a graviturgy muscle wizard that used a Maul. I had upcasted immovable object on it so it was a permanent effect. I could let it go and it’d be stuck there. You can also choose when it’s movable or not. I did so many fun things with it
With Liam quoting The Princess Bride right after, I'm imagining that bit to be Orym using Seedling to do Inigo's jump - swing - land, then Ashton using their hammer's haft to do Westley's jump - full spin - land from the sword fight.
(spoiler) I never thought about Fearne making a pact with a devil, let alone Asmodeus, a betrayer God... But then again, this is Fearne (a chaotic, kleptomaniac, fire druid) and Ashley Johnson we're talking about here. Just put a tall, handsome fiend/champion in front of her with an accent, and boom, you got a powerful, fey, fire druid who's got the devil watching her back. Hope to see how this plays out. :)
I don't see Asmodeus as the type to watch people's backs. From Brennan's portrayal in EXU Calamity, it moreso appears that he uses them while making it damn clear that he hates them and wants them to suffer. Vespin was always in pain while working for him, and the K'nauthi (sp) were mutilating themselves. Remember, Asmodeus hates mortaldom for what he thinks they did to his siblings, and he wants eternal suffering without death for everyone, mortal and deity alike. But maybe this threat has put a brief halt on that design. If Mercer continues with that idea, though, Fearne is in for a world of hurt.
@@davids.7885 in all fairness, that was Asmodeus about to begin the Calamity. I'm not saying that the Betrayer God and Lord of the Nine Hells "mellowed out" but given the circumstances then and the circumstances now, id imagine he's at the very least not gonna mutilate a new follower
@@Lynch2507 You could be right, but considering the importance of his plan for the Calamity and the cruelty with which he treated his followers at that crucial juncture, I don't know that it would make a huge difference. Ultimately I think Fearne not getting constantly tortured would come down to meta reasons, namely the nature of the medium. I don't see Matt being willing to do that to Ashley's character for a drawn-out period of time, whereas Brennan had only four episodes and seems to have more of a stomach for really fucking shit up for people at the table, in both good ways and bad.
I find it funny that all this time they are arguing if the gods are good or bad and if they are worth saving and that they are more "pro" people then she goes and make a pact with pretty much the most evil god which desire is to make mortals suffer.
@@CryptidCritter Yeah, also it is always like Ashton: I don't remember my past. I didn't think it mattered. Group: Tell us everything about your past and what happened to you! Ashton: I am telling you, I have almost no memory of my past and what happened to me. Group: Why don't you want to talk about your past? What are you holding back? Ashton: Guys, I literally don’t know anything. I was a little child and only have fragmented, very traumatizing images of that time, which I tried not to think about. Maybe you don't taliesin but I must know more gaudrashari lore the arch druid that talked to imyr was also an earth Genasi what if taliesins character is related to him
@@Aurora_LightbringerWhether he was or wasn't earth genasi to begin with doesn't really impact whether he's related to the druid. Planestouched such as tieflings, aasimar or genasi don't have to exhibit the traits throughout the bloodline nor do they have to be born as one. So Taliesin can do what he wants with Ashton as far as that goes. It seems likely that it has more to do with the dunamancy and his class but we don't yet know how the Hishari may have effected him either. But with the dunamantic energies having effected him a probability shift could easily alter his expression of something in his bloodline as well.
My Mom was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and watching y'all have fun has been keeping me going through this difficult time. Thank you, all of you, for giving me a break from reality ❤
As someone who lost her dad to that exact thing, I am wishing your mom success in her treatment efforts (hopefully it was caught early enough) - light and love to both of you.
I love how if anyone else had considered that deal, there would have been a big conversation. But because its Fearne/Ashley everyone's like "Oh this is gonna be good".
The thing I really want to know is...did the Ruby Vanguard choose their poison knowing that the only cure was a rare flower in a cursed land, or does the perinnem just work for most serious toxins and our heroes got lucky? I mean, Otohan might just be sadistic enough to enjoy sending people off to their deaths trying to prevent someone else's. "You **could** stop it...but you'd have to go fight reanimated corpses and harpies in the swamp first. Good luck, buddy!"
Yes total sweet, bc Laura should be not in that position, after she got way from the big boss. What does she think, she attacks him again and pulls his focus! Why didn’t she cast invisible and hide ? Bc this players know that Matt will not kill anyone.
And marisha character should be pro god. Why ? She was death and without a agent of god (pyke) she would death! So this bit*** should be more pro god and not agains it. All this stupid players should be pro god. Fcg is healing and buffing this idiots all the time. So indirect god is helping the group. railroad game
@@Ghostleeee The creature shouldn't have even noticed Imogen when she cast psychic lance. Don't know why Matt played it like that. Marisha and Laura were even confused and whispering about it later. Also, killing players for the sake of it isn't good storytelling btw. In fact, it's incredibly lame and cheap. Not sure why some people are so thirsty for it.
One of my most favorite long running gags of Sam's this campaign is how every spiritual guardian or spiritual weapon takes the form of something their enemy hates 😂
The funniest thing about Sam trying to make FCG be the first to know that Imogen and Laudna kissed is that the two of them have kinda acted like a couple since the beginning anyway (which is why pretty much all the guest characters have assumed they were together). They might officially be a thing now but literally nothing about their dynamic has changed so I don't see how anyone could possibly figure it out.
@@HotelEntropy Well Yu asked Imogen if she and Laudna were romantically entangled which I'm guessing she got from the way Imogen was talking. I'm pretty sure Deanna said something about it too but I can't remember when and we know FRIDA tried to hook Imogen up by playing her soundbite to Laudna. I'm not sure but I seem to remember Bor'dor also said something about it.

I admire the cast of Critical Role greatly, but I must assume that Laura and Travis never introduced the others to their kid because they have clearly never met a human child.
I was wondering for like 90% of the episode why the thumbnail was just Ashley, since Fearne was't really doing anything special in the episode and then it became very clear why it had to be her
Was rewatching campaign 2, when Beauregard was researching the luxon beacons at the cobalt soul rexentrum archives- she learned that meteorites from ruedus was crashing into the planet. Many believed that ruedus was decaying. They also believed that sometimes legendary warriors of the gods were just returning to earth. Now I got a theory, we already know that the moon is a prison- are the Railorens(?) Trying to open the moon and take over the earth with predathos?
Great, great episode... but when the husbands share a brain cell about giving Matt a running hard time about the flower names, you just know that disaster is in the air!
Matt and Laura laughing to tears about the beef thing was fucking great, haha. I love when they crack each other up like that and I feel like low-key it happens a lot.
Shorty that did the photoshop bit is perfect. She 4th wall broke for a millisecond while Sam was pitching his idea for ASMR 2 and it really felt like a cry for help. And the watch check was so subtle and good. Idk her name but she is now my favorite staff member 😂
I wish I would post this every episode but Matt is an amazing DM and I am referring to the moments he just sits back and let’s his players create. Thank you for years of enjoyment as a viewer to you Matt and the entire cast, regulars and guest stars. This gets me through rough times and I can’t appreciate it more 😊
Imogen: "We should head inside, yeah?" Fjord: "Yeah." Grog: "Yeah." Chetney: *"Yeah."* Fjord and Grog: Realize they're in the wrong campaign and disintegrate.
The interesting thing is that Fearne is the member of the group best situated to make a deal with the devil and not get totally screwed by it. Remember in Calamity when all the fey creatures were given a chance to escape before all hell broke loose? Asmodeus doesn't despise them as much as he despises natives to the Exandrian material plane, so Fearne being a non-native works in her favor. Plus the fact that Asmodeus is gonna prioritize self-preservation above all, Fearne might be able to get through this with a deal that is surprisingly fair by devil standards. Maybe.
1:08:29 I like that Sam fully understood that specific meme would start a new pregnancy rumor about Laura and Travis. But instead of just not doing it he decided to add clarity and give an explanation to the meme to avoid the rumor but keep the meme and added to it all at the same time. True chaotic genius.
I've long expected Fearne to inadvertently cause the death or near-death of a party member due to her chaotic antics, but even I was thrown for a loop that she would actually deeply consider being a follower/champion of a betrayer god. I really have to wonder if/when she learns more about Asmodeus, will she double down, or back off? I legitimately can't say for sure one way or the other now.
Knowing Fearne, she's not really a follower of Asmodeus. She just sealed that pact because it sounded like fun, and as soon as things goes south she'll try to book it out of the deal.
@@lucasmatheusoliveiradealbu9033 That or the moment her deal involves hurting/losing Orym. As far as the rest of the Hells go, maaaaaaaaybe, but Orym? She'll fight Teven herself.
@@lucasmatheusoliveiradealbu9033 Knowing Asmodeus, he's not out for devotion anyway. If Fearne can be a pawn in at least one good scheme or two, that's all he needs her for. It's probably only the *manner* of her departure from his service that could make him vengeful...
Okay but actually themm collecting the champions would be comparatively easy because in the wake of this episode they have some kind of tangential connection to 6 of the 9 known (to us) divine champions (in order from strongest to weakest connection): -Scanlan (Champion of Ioun): they know almost all of the living members of vox machina at this point, and have a way of contacting him presumably -Yasha (Champion of Kord): they can connect to her through beau and caleb now - Xerxus (Champion of Asmodeus): thank you Fearne
I thought Yasha was the Champion of the Storm Lord, and Grog was the Champion of Kord? Grog did stay in Vasselheim at the end of C1, and was staying with Earthbreaker Groon. Plus, Grog has the Titanstone Knuckles, rather than the Holy Avenger of the Storm Lord (loaned to Yasha from Lady Kima, after VM picked up the Holy Avenger near Vorugal's Draconia lair).
@@isaiahwelch8066 Kord IS The Storm Lord. Every exandrian god has their "classic" D&D name AND a descriptive one, made up by Matt, because of copyright reasons. And Kima's Holy Avenger has nothing to do with the Storm Lord (especially because she is a Paladin of Bahamut/The Platinum Dragon). It was "just" a Holy Avenger. A crazy powerful magic weapon, that normally only Paladins coul wield, but Matt made an exception for Yasha, because Zealot Barbarian is as close to a Paladin, as it gets.
And somebody needs to roll a very high insight check to see the true nature of the sword, which btw is EVIL. It contains a sliver of the mind of the demon Graz'zt he's very charming and seems helpful but this mf bad news. Chetney will become controlled into doing things like hurt his friends and not remember a thing!

@@theviewbot Oh, goddammit. lol
Ashton fell off a building and died. And then they got better. Clearly a fall from a great height is not enough to stop our boi
In many of the official books it actually says that you can change things to suit your experience.
nalfeshnee have truesight so mirror image should not have worked.
I love how Laura instantly breaks herself, has to stop talking mid sentence and just spends the next minute trying to quietly hold in a giggle-fit. With Matt being the only one to notice and just silently giving her a judging and disappointed head shake.

@@WhisperNuggetznot to mention, if a divine portfolio is unattended, does a worthy mortal automatically ascend?
The Betrayer gods are still gods, and how there's low level demons and devil there are angels.
@@Xorrin yeah the gods leaving really just opens the door for abyssal abominations to take control while the remaining underlings squabble for power.
Laudna really is my favorite character of the season. That form of dread scrambling down to lockpick was so funny.
You're not the only one who thought this was Zerxus... and I was stoked that Sam namechecked him at the end of the episode, so MAYBE we'll see him?
Too powerful for their current level surely, but not for the final clash with this Primordial/Titan/God villain.
If it was Zerxus would have expected Luis to show up there. I’m not sure what being a servant to Asmdous would have done to him because he did die during the Calamity he could have come back and be wandering around. Only change that happened to him at first was growing swept back horns

I never thought about Fearne making a pact with a devil, let alone Asmodeus, a betrayer God...
What I love about this is its just Fearn being horny lol

Matt and Laura laughing to tears about the beef thing was fucking great, haha. I love when they crack each other up like that and I feel like low-key it happens a lot.
It does, Matt curses Laura for it. But he loves every second of it and so does Laura love the beef :D
From now on I will only ever see Mister as living in a tiny action movie within this story
Shorty that did the photoshop bit is perfect. She 4th wall broke for a millisecond while Sam was pitching his idea for ASMR 2 and it really felt like a cry for help. And the watch check was so subtle and good. Idk her name but she is now my favorite staff member 😂
That became one of my favorite ad bits. Great job by the whole team.
Also, so glad they stood up to him on the ASMR 2 pitch. I (sorry Sam!) always skip past that when it plays during break.
@@annec8127So do I. But mostly because ASMR doubles as misophonia for me.
Still twisted enough to like the butt teeth joke though.
Shorty? Ghetto much?
Laudna's new design goes SO hard
I wish I would post this every episode but Matt is an amazing DM and I am referring to the moments he just sits back and let’s his players create. Thank you for years of enjoyment as a viewer to you Matt and the entire cast, regulars and guest stars. This gets me through rough times and I can’t appreciate it more 😊
Imogen: "We should head inside, yeah?"
Fjord: "Yeah."
Grog: "Yeah."
Chetney: *"Yeah."*
Fjord and Grog: Realize they're in the wrong campaign and disintegrate.
Maybe.
Fair points and stuff I hadn't considered! I like it.
I was looking for ages to find a comment explaining that. Thank you very much
I've long expected Fearne to inadvertently cause the death or near-death of a party member due to her chaotic antics, but even I was thrown for a loop that she would actually deeply consider being a follower/champion of a betrayer god. I really have to wonder if/when she learns more about Asmodeus, will she double down, or back off? I legitimately can't say for sure one way or the other now.
I'm honestly curious why the Betrayer gods haven't made more inroads with the Fey in the first place. You'd think they'd make obvious powerful allies.
It's probably only the *manner* of her departure from his service that could make him vengeful...
asmodeus DID NOTHING WRONG... just ask him =D
Fun RP at the start, then a very nerve wracking battle (especially as an Imogen fan). This is an intense episode.
Okay but actually themm collecting the champions would be comparatively easy because in the wake of this episode they have some kind of tangential connection to 6 of the 9 known (to us) divine champions (in order from strongest to weakest connection):
-Scanlan (Champion of Ioun): they know almost all of the living members of vox machina at this point, and have a way of contacting him presumably
-Yasha (Champion of Kord): they can connect to her through beau and caleb now
- Xerxus (Champion of Asmodeus): thank you Fearne
I'm so here for Fern becoming a cleric or paladin of Asmodeus.
She’ll finally put the Fear into Fearne
Do we think that sword is Graz’tchar? 👀
Matt's description of the sword was straight out of the TCSR (cruciform, silver, embedded with rubies), 100% it's Graz'tchar!
@@OccidentalAvian bonus points for it being wielded by a demon
And somebody needs to roll a very high insight check to see the true nature of the sword, which btw is EVIL. It contains a sliver of the mind of the demon Graz'zt he's very charming and seems helpful but this mf bad news. Chetney will become controlled into doing things like hurt his friends and not remember a thing!
I loved the Ashton leaping off the tower. That there's an Ashteroid
Nice.
Bloody flowers i love the name of this episode😂 but, if you got bloody pereneums i'd recommend going to a hospital fam.😅
or at least buy better TP.
Travis after his third magic sword: “Finally I have them all.”
The entire scene with Fearne and Tevan Klask had me screaming. SUCH good acting from Matts side, all the glances and his posture. Favorite scene of the campaign so far!
[SPOILERS]
I’m fully expecting Fearne to have a dream/vision involving a certain grand deceiver, sooner rather then later.
imagine if she encounter azzy in a dream and deadass pickpocket him
I wanna will this into being
