Honestly in 5e Rangers are least impressive I think, anything they can do a fighter can do better, and the archetypes range from ok (horizon walker) to outright detrimental (beast master)

Like you gotta think how confused the enemy NPCs are fighting this guy, 'WTF WAS THAT!"

But season 2 is all like that, every character has opposition to season 1 character in some regards, Nott is a goblin, while Scanlan hates them, Jester is romantically oblivious prankster, while Vex was mature temptress, Keyleth was a sweetheart, while Beau is cynic asshole, Pike was defender, while Jasha is brutal attacker(also contrast between kind hearted of Cleric and holding back of barbarian), Grog was powerful idiot, while Fjord is weak but charismatic leader et cetera.
First Campaign he played the son of a mother who was killed by goblins. Second campaign, he plays the mother killed by goblins that has a son halfling.
I know people have said this already, but I don't think anything has topped the sequence where Scanlan took out an entire house full of guards by polymorphing into a triceratops and setting it on fire using a fire breathing potion. The sheer amount of joy that I got from revisiting this has completely convinced me to do another re-watch of the first campaign.
I love Travis. He's the best wingman anyone can have as friend. He not only is part of the show he also is an avid viewer and he loves everything that happens. Such pure reactions

Saying it needs to be more like campaign one is like saying Robin Williams needed to play Sy from one this photo like the genie from Aladdin. They're not interchangeable. They fit the worlds and stories they were made for and while you have every right to prefer one over the other you can't expect to be every campaign, every story, to be a cookie cutter copy, following the same formula. Things get awful booting that way and the things you loved in the begining tend to quickly lose their charm
I know Sam said he just kinda no-effort made Scanlan, and it was a random name and like 'I'll just pick dumb stuff' but the fact that he kind of always lived his backstory is a testament to how Sam is the bullshitting perfect entertainer, even more than Scanlan.
I honestly love Sam's particular brand of comedy. Clever, occasionally dirty, but never condescending. I can't think of another show where I watch the ads on purpose.

Scanlan did what Joey did for “Friends” and what Barney did for “How I Met Your Mother.” He was essentially the “breakout” character of the show in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, CR is a great show, but I doubt it would’ve developed such a massive fan-following if not for Sam’s performance as Scanlan
Completely agreed. And this is true for Sam in general. I started with Campaign 2 and would've stopped watching critical role a long time ago without Sam Riegel. Even for Campaign 1, it was a slog for me esp in the beginning but Sam Riegel's characters made it absolutely worth it in the end.
Sam + Bard is arguably the best thing that’s happened to DND. The rest of the cast is amazing, but Sam is MVP. Absolutely brilliant. Never disappoints.

Didn’t realize at the time because I was also a newbie to D&D, but Scanlan should’ve died in that dragon fight. He got knocked unconscious then hit twice but matt mistakenly only made each hit fail one death save instead of auto Crit for 2! Glad Matt didn’t know that rule yet lol
I gotta say. When I came into this game, I barely knew ANYTHING about Travis and Sam. The extension of my knowledge was "Oh yeah. Sam's the guy who voiced Teddie in Persona 4." And that was it. But holy shit, this show showed me Sam is hilarious when he's not restricted to say generic anime lines.
Then it follows up with what should be Scanlan’s death, but Matt forgot that melee attacks should be 2 death saving throws instead of one. It’s a tragedy, because imagine the narrative of Scanlan if he had heroically fallen after standing toe-to-toe with Rimefang.
It took maybe a month to find the time to actually watch them all and choose which clips and then maybe a week to edit the whole thing down. And then an extra day cause the first upload fucked up XD
When scanlan was talking to the barkeep and was told to talk to Trevor all I could think of was the wildmount bandits saying “they’re the ones that ashed Trevor!”
I knew Sam was involved with these campaigns since I’ve had a Twitter account before the formation of Critical Role. I just never had the time nor found enough stimulation to want to explore Twitch. I did promise my commitment to watch the animated adaptation of Vox Machina after I finished watching the 2021 Shaman King anime reboot. Despite being a late Critter fan, I am very proud of Sam’s talent and brilliance in this DnD world. So maybe the long hours of his greatest bits is enough for me to get a sense of the Critical Role campaign episodes.

Honestly, Scanlan was such a magical outlet for Sam's creativity. I miss how effortlessly funny everything ended up being in campaign 1.

Watching these clips with the marker made battle maps made me realize how far they have come, to the epic Dwarven Forge maps.
