First drift day today and it was a success. Thanks for all your tips. Had the usual 'first day out issues' but nothing the group could not solve. Correct battery charging was one of them.
You’ve probably been getting this comment for years now…. But thanks for the video. I found it very informative, I’ve been out of the hobby for about 15 years and getting back into it with my son.
Fantastic job on the video 😎👍 I think you covered it all and I agree 100% with everything you said. Even though I think I know enough about lipos, I really enjoyed the video and gave it a full watch. Very informative and thorough. I saved this to my lipo playlist which ins't public just yet.
I really do appreciate the feedback Scott. I am always nervous when I put these videos out - who am I to claim I know about all of this? :) Still - I kept seeing all of these messages of people asking how to choose a lipo and charger...so making a video was easier than continuing to type it out!
@@RoadsideRC I always get a little nervous with this type of video as well. Actually I get nervous every time I turn the camera on and never stick to my notes lol. You did a great great job
Thank you! I know this video is a year old. Just getting started with Lipo’s with my first brushless the Arrma Typhon 3s. I went through the Traxxas lineup. I appreciate your video and it answered a lot of questions. Prophet maxes at 4a and I have 5000 mah 3s’s so I guess I’m going to be waiting awhile to bash hahaha thanks again
Hello Troy, I think your vid has been the most helpful to me out of all the ones out there. I am brand new to the hobby and too many other videos fail to explain things on my level. They all talk too fast and assume that we all know something already. I can't learn it right that way. Anyway, I just purchased a 1/6 scale Rochobby Jeep and I went and got a 5200 Mah 2s 35c for it. I think that is a good starter one don't you? I put it in the jeep and went outside in the yard and had a ball, I'm hooked! I only ran it about 20 min.so I don't know how fast these batteries drain but I kept it in the jeep as I will go out tomorrow and play some more. I am waiting for a battery checker to come tomorrow. I will be kind of nervous charging the battery the first time. Wish me luck. Keep up the great work teach!
Thank you! Very glad this was helpful - I appreciate that feedback. After you get comfortable, I think that truck will handle a 3S battery also, so you could get a little more power and speed from it.
Roadside RC I use a Ev- peak 50w 4.0amp fast charger to charge all my batterys it can charge a 2s 3s 4s and that's it I bought it October 3rd 2018 been using it ever sense with no problems and my Lipo batterys I use are floureon, hexfly, powerhobby, Gens ace, and they all have dean's connector people say dean's ain't really good I love em. I've never used ovonic or goldbat, but have heard good things about them tho, are they really good ? Thanks for sharing the video 👊👍
Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear the EV-peak has been doing well for you. I personally stay away from dean's connectors - but have to admit that they do the job in a very small space. That is the one issue with the XT90 plugs I use - they are HUGE! :)
Connector like this? E-flite Battery Connector Wire 1S UMX EFLU3052 Replacement Airplane Parts a.co/d/8HfAaRu Any lipo charger will charge it. It is just about finding the right charging lead to connect it.
My kids just upgraded to a couple 2S Ovonic batteries on the Traxxas ID EZ Peak charger. Charging balanced and at 1A charge rate to try and keep it safe. What amount of time on the charger would you recommend for these?
There isn't a right amount of time when charging a lipo. When on balance charge, the charger will monitor each cell and bring each one to 4.2V/cell. It is limited by the battery, not by a stopwatch. The charger will automatically stop whenever it is done. No real reason to limit yourself to 1A charge rate. If the battery is a 3000mah = charge at 3A, if it is 4000mah = charge at 4A...etc.
I fly model airplanes and I use 2 single lipo chargers, one with a power supply and one with a built in power supply. But I really want one dual charger only because it is a pain to carry my whole chargeing station from the car to the field where they have power. My current station consists of two chargers and one power supply.I want one box to replace all that I charge two batteries at once. Each battery gives me 5 minutes flight time and im done for the day.
I'm new to lipo charging and i have the dynamite charger that you showed in the video. i have a starter box lipo from ultimate rc that is a 14.8v 2500mah 20c lipo. what charging amp should i charge that at? I do believe it's a 4s lipo.
My battery is 9.6V 11.7Ah LiFePo4. It is 27 cell battery. What setting should i use please. I keep getting low voltage or high voltage. What setting should i charge it? What should my mAh and V be on my charger? Please help.
I started my kids at 4 and 7 I believe. The youngest ran a brushed Stampede. That was just about right. I would suggest going with something like the Arrma Granite Mega, or getting the BLX brushless version, but REALLY slowing it down. Either that or something like a crawler.
You would need a more modern ESC. Very simple actually! If you want to keep it brushed, here is a great option: alnk.to/44WwOmg The 1080 will handle 2S or 3S. You will want to turn the drag brake off, as it come set high for a crawling application. But that is easy to do with the programmer. If you want to go brushless, then I would suggest this: alnk.to/eOMKE92
I would suggest you pick from one of the ones I suggested. That dynamite is literally less than $30 on Amazon right now. However, I really do suggest that HTRC charger I showed.
It's probably more of an issue for us weirdo's who run stuff smaller than 1/10, but a battery larger than your tray is likely also too heavy. You'll end up blowing out shocks, stripping gears, etc... from that extra weight in your chassis.
Is there any particular reason you use xt90’s over ec5 / ic5? I had deans on a redcat and switched to xt90, because deans can’t handle high current. Since then I started buying arrmas, and switched the redcat to ec5 to match all my arrma lipos. Seeing I have mostly arrmas, I’ve left all my connectors ec5 as to not void the warranty. I have soldering skills and could easily change them. But curious if there is any benefit to xt90 over ec5 / ic5 that makes voiding the warranty worth it.
Bro I love your fucking attitude I was feeling so stressed about batteries and like I wasted so much money and stuff and bro your video just calmed me down I fucking love you
Sorry. I have bad ADHD and couldn't absorb this info. If I cared only about speed. Not run time. What number do I want to be the highest? MaH, C, S, V?
Sorry - it is a LOT of information all at the same time. Top speed is going to be mostly from Voltage / cell count - your V & S. Then, next in importance would be MaH and C.
80 watt charger should work more than sufficient. The safest way to charge All Lipo’s I don’t care what the rating is is at a 1c rate. You can charge higher than that but the battery will deteriorate a lot faster. Also never store a battery fully charged even for a week it will degrade the life of the battery. If you’re storing Lipo is 50% charge. Also it is in your best interest to always use a balance charger or once again you are degrading the life of the battery.
