    This was the first video we looked at when we bought our new Subaru and I’m so glad we did! It saved us hours of searching through, and deciphering the book! I’ve now returned to it three months into having our car and am reassured to know I’m now getting a handle on the system. A lot of the comments are valid. There is now a lot of ‘finger pointing’ that wasn’t there before which can be quite distracting but I am still getting a handle on it.

    Just picked up a 2020 Outback Touring XT. If you are good with tech, you should have no issues with the system. I took the manual, went in the car and just played with it. I am sure their are some things I don't know but I will figure it out. The car is great and I am very happy.

    While initially very impressive It’s one giant distraction that you have to take your eyes off the road to use while driving. With knobs and buttons you can usually find your way around by feel. One example: what used to be just a quick push of a button, to change from outside air to recirculate now takes two touches on the screen and in different positions on the screen. This is a step in the wrong direction and is dangerous.

    • @rynobucket

      Totally agree and it's the main reason I'm likely going with a Forrester instead, which still uses mostly tactile buttons and swtiches. I instantly noticed on a test drive how much less my eyes were on the road doing normal things in a car you would like adjusting climate, etc. I hope they improve the climate controls at least to make it all fuctional on screen but like normal buttons.
      For example, turning on the heat warmers could just be tapping the icon for them and cycling through on, heat low, heat high and off all in the same button location on screen. Instead it brings up a large popup to do the same thing. It takes three times as long and is distracting.
      More time on screen and off the road, increased chance of a very dangerous situation.

      @@rynobucket Agree with you, and with no heated steering wheel , you need gloves, and that further inhibits use of touch screen over knobs or buttons. They complicated something simple.

    I feel Subaru really miss the big boat on this bigger screen setup, it could have been designed so much better. Instead they've take simple tasks & made them more complex in steps ie. seat heaters & coolers. I waited until the '20 OB came out before making my final vehicle selection. Test drove the OB 4, times & decided to pass on it for a more simplistic setup.
    And how many times did Brendan have to double tap various selections? Is b/c the icons are too small or the screen unresponsive?

    • @Moods45
      @Moods45 4 роки тому +1

      Wish I did the same. Actually preferred the Forrester but didn't like the way it looked. Drove better and much less glitchy.

    • @jhguygih
      @jhguygih 4 роки тому

      I test drove it twice, almost buying but believe me, even the sound nod was lagging, it takes almost a second to respond then the audio is on top already. Also the air buttons are bad located. They could go with better UI like pulling from the bottom a screen with alll possible options for air instead that small piece you need 3 secs to find the button. Also heated sets lagged. They need better ui and processor. Since I don't like the forester I'm leaned to the gmc terrain, not the same quality I know, but have very good and nice buttons.

    I wanted to get a 2020 Outback but I was so put off by this large screen I went for a 2020 Forester instead last Wednesday. I would have liked the Turbo motor in the Onyx Edition but I could not get past the thought of dealing with that monstrosity. I freely admit I am a total Luddite.

    I have a 2022 Outback Ltd XT and love the car yet DESPISE the infotainment system and that alone will make me not keep the car for long and will only buy another Subaru if it does not have that system. Frankly, I consider having to find the right part of the screen to MAYBE get what you want and having to go through several sub menus to be dangerous.

    Thanks for the great review! I'm waiting for my 2020 Outback Touring to arrive at the dealership and I've been wondering about the workings of the new screen. This answered a lot of questions, I think I'll recommend that my dealer take a look. You can only really become familiar with time and use, most new car systems can be daunting at first. BTW, LOVE the Java Brown interior in the Touring trim! Thank you again Brendan.

    I just watched a review of this infotainment system by Bachman Auto Group. If I only went by that video I would not think this was a very good infotainment system. In fact, he even mentions that it's not worth having. A bad selling point since it is a Subaru dealership doing the review. However, if you look at this review (done by Groove Subaru) on this infotainment system, he seems to know more about how to use it and shows the benefits of having the larger screen along with the new features with the updated infotainment system. I now believe this is a good system that I would enjoy using.

    Thank you for reviewing Subaru's new infotainment system. This was the "wow" feature I was originally attracted to but after listening to your explanations the system seems overwhelming to me. I wish there could have been discrete buttons for some of these functions. The main feature of interest is the built-in navigation with the maps taking up most of the screen. I would have liked to hear the turn by turn directions while watching how the map displays. Gosh, if the navigation doesn't even show street names, what good is it really? If I decide to purchase this vehicle, it will be for reasons other than this particular infotainment system.

    I bought a 2018 legacy. Love the car but am ready to remove the whole radio and toss it cause I can’t stand the bs. Tried your tip, doesn’t work for my model I guess. Total fight for hours. I don’t even like radio and every time I get in my car and turn it on the radio automatically comes on with the ignition. Tremendous aggravation. It does have a radio ON/OFF button but when you click it nothing happens. Only solution I found is I don’t subscribe to series XM so I just set it to that and that seems to work for me cause I can start the car and no more radio.

    How about some sort of lip over the top of the display to mitigate glare from the sun? My wife has that kind of set up in her GMC Terrain and it makes a huge difference. Never understood how Subaru keeps dropping the ball on something so basic. And who was in charge of picking Tom Tom for navigation?

    Great video! Thank you very much. It's very helpful. I do have a question though regarding the split screen you show for the car play and the entertainment system around the 5:40 mark. I have the Outback Limited and it doesn't show the entertainment screen on the bottom half of the split screen but rather it displays car play related info. This is quite annoying as I often find myself having to go back and forth between the radio and Google maps when navigating. Is the setup for the Limited different than the Touring model?

  • @RolandDenholm

    Thanks for the review, and the features. After 20,000 kms of use the 11inch infoscreen is far too glitchy, hard to see in bright sun and the default settings change back every start. Subaru needs to improve the intuitive functions and let the driver decide on what preferences are set. I would not buy one (fleet operator) without this being improved. About 2-3 times a month the radio and all audio just cease to work - the media centre button freezes, and the voice recognition is terrible all the time.

    Consumer Reports has summarized this new Subaru Infotainment System as being very disappointing. The 2019 Ascent and Forester Infotainment Systems are more reliable and easier to ease. If Subaru is driven to make their cars more technologically advanced, I suggest make Apple CarPlay Wireless. That white cord is an eye sore in the video...

    • @OriginalLHB
      @OriginalLHB 4 роки тому +2

      That would be fantastic. The white cord is very obtrusive given that there is no place in which the typical Android Phone can be stored even in the Forester.

    Awesome, again. Personally, I have frustration with the climate controls irt to wanting to just run outside air and adjust the fan. Takes too many steps imo. Also, it isn't entirely obvious that to turn off AC and run fan only you deselect all the AC buttons at the top of the AC screen. That is no buttons are lit. IMO those should toggle (they are software driven after all). @Subaru. Please contact me for more detailed feedback (i.e. I'll make my own video JUST for Subaru consumption). Ditto, Android Auto. There seem to be very specific steps required to set that up esp if you already paired a phone....

    I would like to echo the objection to this iPad-like gizmo on the dashboard. It's very distracting to try to tap the buttons just right for essentially everything: cabin temperature/fan/etc., music. It's as bad as having someone texting while driving. The other safety features on our 2020 Outback are sensational, but the iPadoid system is a stupid choice.

    I love everything about the new 2020 Outback except for the infotainment system. Nothing about it works the same twice in a row. It crash's for no reason, loses radio station settings, eq and fader settings reset each time I restart , screens change, Phone and Nav do not work consistantly. It's a total disapointment in exicution and Subaru doesn't seem to care about fixing it (or even issuing software patchs).

  • @dstorm7752

    Autostop is incredibly annoying, and Subaru should allow owners to PERMANENTLY shut that off. The map/GPS system works well, but the rest of this "infotainment" (who would use such a term?) is a distraction which could easily cause car wrecks.

    • @acampbell198
      @acampbell198 2 роки тому

      Agree on the auto stop…disagree on the map/GPS. Currently our 2021 Outback Touring thinks we are in Richmond, VA area…we live on the Eastern Shore of MD. Subaru has not been helpful in fixing this. They won’t/can’t provide any tech support over the phone. They want me to bring the car in for a service appointment. I don’t think I should have to bring the car in to diagnose a navigation system problem. They should be able to trouble shoot remotely…at least to the point of identifying whether it is a hardware or a software problem.

      Harmon Kardon is an option on the 2020 Outback Onyx XT. I have it, which is why I know that. Otherwise, I would not have known. It is almost a guarantee that the car dealership would not know such a detail. But, I do not blame them. I think the space shuttle may be the only vehicle more complicated than this system.

      @@roberthenry9319 man, I'm certainly not on here to argue, so if you somehow managed to nail down an Onyx with the Harman Kardon soundsystem, MAJOR congrats. I don't know how you did it (would love to know), but even tonight on checking the Subaru.com builder, the HK option doesn't come up for the Onyx (it does for the limited and Touring). Anyhow, whatever you did to get, please share...I know I can't be the only one interested in that option. Thx.

    Have a 2022 Wilderness Edition Outback. This system is terrible, so much so it has compelled me to consider other manufacturers. The design and functionality is illogical and cumbersome. I will only attempt adjustments when parked. When moving I pull over before using the system. Definitely a hazard. The navigation system is basic at least and I will be adding a Garmin soon. I sat in a friends 2015 Toyota Highlander and could not believe how simple the system was to use i.e. how responsive the touch screen was to input. A joy. Sorry Subaru this system does not cut it for me.

    you can't use it without ignoring the road and your driving. The whole techno car crap is terrible. Yes, I have one. Try adjusting climate controls while driving. Touch screens are going to kill people. Let automotive people design cars, and get cell phone people out of the car biz.

    I notice that these infotainment demos are always done while the car is stopped. They are not done while the car is moving because that would highlight how distracting and dangerous these displays are. Hey, Groove Subaru, prove me wrong and drive the car at highway speeds while dinking around with that "wonderful" display.

    Having north at the top of your map is the most basic rule of cartography. My wife & I are absolutely disgusted with this Tom Tom GPS system. We absolutely LOVE our 2020 Outback, but sure do wish Subaru would have incorporated a Garmin GPS into the infotainment system instead of this POS Tom Tom GPS. We've now resorted to using a stand alone Garmin DriveSmart 65 on top of the dashboard.

      Touch the direction arrow once in the map. It changes to "heads up", the way your car is moving. Another buried info point that most drivers will not know. Way too complicated setup. It's a car. I don't want to be certified as a 777 pilot.

    2. Multi clicks for simple climate control, which is really dangerous during driving
