Without reading ur description, the moment the music came on, I was like "this is vivaldi".. He has soo many many crazy pieces like this. One aria that this aria reminds me of is In Furore Iustissimae irae..

Baroque music can be so ROCK - and you certainly rock! It is beyond me how on earth you manage to pick all those minute details in milliseconds and then REMEMBER them afterwards! Kudos, you’re great!
This aria "Armatae face et anguibus" is gorgeous. And listen to the aria "Gelido in ogni vena" from Vivaldi's opera "Farnace" and the aria "Sposa, son Disprezzata".
Sposa son disprezzata is one of my favorite arias, it is so beautiful. I’ve recently added it to my repertoire list and am now working on memorizing to play the accompaniment. Great recommendations!
Jessica, congrats from Canada. Vivaldi wrote a lot of dramatic music and this is a great example. Lea is an accomplished musician. She studied with Sarah Mingardo a fabulous contralto. You should look at her other performances. For example Scherza Infida by Handel from his opera Ariodante accompanied by Les Arts Florissants directed by William Christie, a real force in the baroque scene, where she captures the mood creating a very emotionally charged rendition. Great orchestra too. The violist Jerome in this group is a character. Love your enthusiasm and knowledge of classical music including Baroque which sure is not dull. Cam Reid 🔥🔥💥☄️🔥🔥

That coloratura passage was so precise and amazing! I’m a lyrical soprano (full) and I’m currently working on two coloratura pieces (my teacher thankfully is a lyrical coloratura so she knows how to sing these). It is so much harder than it looks but she makes it look so effortless. Great analysis! Love your enthusiasm!

I thought I was getting near the end of the rainbow when I first started getting into classical a few years back......but OMG.......this was amazingly insane intense......had to check to see if my jaw hadn't completely dropped off and shattered on the floor......your gonna get me addicted/fascinated to learn about opera......love to listen/learn from vocal coaches/singers with such a depth of passion and understanding of music......I am in complete and utter awe.....where's the FIRESTORM emoji?!?!?.....these little flamette's don't do this justice. 🔥💖🔥🎼🔥💖🎹🔥💖🎸🔥💖🔥INSANELY SPECTACULAR!!!!🔥🔥🔥💖🔥🔥🔥💖🔥🔥🔥💖

Baroque was a wildly creative time when music was freed from narrow folk and church traditions, partly by the needs of religious and political revolutions in which people needed to be engaged emotionally. So court patrons were willing to hear unusual music, and opera houses let works be created or presented without elite patronage as such.
The conventions of opera are also not fixed yet, so Mozart could write crazy difficult parts that maybe three sopranos in Europe could even attempt at the time. Or this wonderful coloratura piece which again may be a couple dozen voices that can deliver it this well. Or heck, a couple. She's brilliant.
Henk Poort and Floor Jansen have an hour interview in her channel where they lament the European derived conventions of pigeonholing artists. Beste Zangers was helpful to kick that to death, at least in Netherlands, but it's very much alive in opera politics. It hurts everyone, but is commercially motivated, as the producers dont want genius individuals to become the show as in pop music, because then the vocalist has bargaining power. Also instrumentalists will always get short shrift from any focus on the vocalist(s). So innovation, distortion, timing tricks, ad libbing, all discouraged.
But in baroque, the singer is "allowed to add notes" in certain passages. Like in blues, rock, jazz. Which really is the best way because it provides for expression and individuality, and diva star power (in the "A prime") while keeping the rest of the song predictable.

I also love how you respect other genres and singing techniques, not all of classical trained people have the respect you have... I am classical trained cellist, and now this is my favorite channel. I watched this video the other day and was so overwhelmed, I couldn't comment afterward. As I listened to this video, I could not stay still, I jumped from my seat, stomped around my apartment muttering to myself, the purity of her notes, the mastery of her voice, and the piece itself hit me in a place I do not have a name for. I am very glad you agree, that this was a masterful performance.

I used to sing in a young learners opera company before my parents convinced me that I had to choose one of the "approved" career paths (doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc).... while I love science and I do enjoy my job, the 17-year old me walking off stage as Escamillo for the last time still mourns a bit... but this reaction just woke him up again!!!

Lea is awesome and pretty, too. Plus, I like anyone who is still doing baroque as it should be done. I saw Jean Rondeau in this video as well, he is an amazing harpsichord player. This is definitely my second favorite performance of this aria. Number one, of course, is Cecilia Bartoli.

I now this comment is a bit late, but I don't care! I love this aria! I first heard this from the great Cecilia Bartoli. Her version is less mastery of the aria and more--she is the character in the aria looking to kill her enemy in the audience. She was intense but marvelous! Lea's version--I just found out about Lea and she's fantastic!
If you have already listened to them, check out Cecilia and Julia Lezhneva's version are scary great! For me anyway.

Oh thank you Peter! Umm, I naturally speak this way. I did work in 5 star hotels for quite some time and being well spoken is a must.

Aria is so beautiful on this bravo! It indeed helps to act out the words you are singing to properly sing the song. Very very powerful which is very hard for girls to sing which is inert to men. The accompaniment is superb perhaps she would be lost without it hahaha perhaps not. Very much appreciated.

No doubt expression was freer when this was written But in modern baroque, the singer is "allowed to add notes" in certain passages. Like in blues, rock, jazz. I stopped listening to the radio years and years ago so I can't confirm but I wouldn't be surprised if it was on the radio bc of how entertaining it is.

You reaction to Armatae was the first time I watched your video, before I found you doing Akin Ka Na Lang. “Armatae face et anguibus” is a great favorite of mine, and I love Léa Desandre to bits. I’ve seen most of the Armatae videos on UA-cam and given that Léa gave a very impassioned performance, I think the best, technically, is by Roberta Invernizzi. You should give it a view. My training is in classic guitar, but I’m passionate with opera and piano For the former, too many to list. For the latter, my idol is Hélène Grimaud.

Amazingly in comparisons of various singers of this piece, Lea only gets about 40% of the nods as best. Seems every singer loves to give it all for this amazing Vivaldi piece!

I wanna ask you a question, there's a lot of talk recently in the US that Europeans have no culture. What's your take on this? Being European I'm not sure what this means and I need to understand this notion.
How about "Queen of the Night" aria performed by the German soprano Diana Damrau in Mozart's Magic Flute which is no doubt the most difficult aria to sing. Do also react to the finest arias performed by my all time favorite opera diva the legendary Maria Callas.

I love your analyses so much! As an aspiring theatrical music director, I am always interested in watching trained singers/coaches react to vocal performances and deconstruct what the singers are doing. On top of being an active performer, I have also taken up the hobby of creating custom backing tracks for content creators' spontaneous singing moments. One such video that I've made features beloved UA-camr and podcaster Garrett Watts singing in a stunning, quasi-operatic falsetto resembling the sound of a Disney princess.
