Welcome to Chasing Latitudes! Have you ever imagined the smell of the ocean air as your boat crashes through the waves? The freedom that comes from casting off the bow lines and heading out to sea to explore new places you can’t reach by car or airplane? Then this channel is for you.
You will not see white sand beaches here, restaurant reviews, beach parties, selfies or Japanese knives. What you will find is factual information based on decades of sailing experience.
My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.
You want to take advantage of the amazing newer technology and modern hull designs when it comes to sailing. This is going to make your vessel far easier to sail solol or short handed and make them far more comfortable and efficient to live aboard full time or even just weekenders without buying more boat than you need.
I offer a wide variety of services including consulting where I will take you through the entire process of how to budget properly, choosing what vessel size will work for your needs, what type of vessel, I will help you shop for vessels, determine offer prices, schedule surveys, talk with brokers, teach you how to do your own pre-survey, walk you through hiring the correct surveyor and help you avoid all of the common pitfalls that you will find when purchasing used sailing vessels.
The consulting does not stop there, I will be with you every step of the way and long after you have purchased your vessel as consulting also comes with lifetime access to the members area,.
Chasing Latitudes hosts a large, active private members area where the members are more than happy to offer their own experience to solve problems, host private videos for ASA Sailing quizzes (ASA 101, 103, & 104), and live stream videos which feature anything from member cruising to boat shopping, boat comparisons, and other live content with chat from the subscribers to my UA-cam channel and channel members.
It’s time for YOU to get on the water. Come aboard!

15 hp efi is everything. I own several..... My old 9.9 is now a prop for a theater production, where it belongs. The difference is reliability. My 9.9 I would be taking apart every 6 weeks or so. The 15 efi you just never worry about.

I had a survey done as mentioned many times.
Upon reviewing the survey I concluded it was so close to a waste I’ll call it just that a waste of my money !
I’m a heavy equipment mechanic with Years Cat exp. Done many inspections in equipment.
    Shoulda just done it myself.
The serious items eve listed as this
    Rigging
“ checked at deck level , all good visually “
    Water maker
“ water maker may be pickled so did not operate it “
    Freezer
“Turns on but not getting cold “
    Etc ….
Wow seriously ? If I can get myself aboard a sailboat I can see this and comment the same never having seen one !
The hull was tapped so that was great to know for $1500US 😂
Honestly the survey is a very wise idea regardless of my attitude about mine lol

I assume it's just the same as any other profession or trade. Some contractors are skilled carpenters and artisans, some are off a 5th when they arrive and they're picking up a 24pk when they leave. For my information, did you have a chance to meet and gauge the surveyor before officially hiring? Sorry to hear that though, I guess checking the fridge tells where the priorities lie with that one.

If you have some level of mechanical knowledge and can look at a device and tell if its fucked, and how hard it will be to unfuck it, then you probably don't need a survey depending on the value of the boat. The only reason i will recommend getting a survey is if you are a total boat amature and don't know what your looking at. people have a tendency to fixate on one aspect they love about a house or a boat or a car, and ignore other, more important issues. this is what a surveyor is good for. to ignore that cute interior detail that made you fall in love, and instead point out the hull blisters and waterlogged rudder and corroded thru-hulls that you probably did not even see.

I agree, the big ticket item is the engine and rigging. However I have had sailboats my whole life and still am not confident with hammering for delamination.

As far as I'm concerned, these tips would also apply to powerboats. I've seen people buy boats and it's "how hard can this be", or what possibly could go wrong, disaster follows.

Hey, found your channel a couple of months ago and am enjoying your content. Looking forward to your buying guide on higher end boats. Gen-X "Been there done that" early retiree. I am finishing a 5 year renovation of historic home in The Lower Keys. Selling this year to sail. Boat budget 4-500.

Why does google paint over the sea floor and coastal areas away from populated areas? They didn't always do that.

I was looking at buying a Leopard 45 Cat. Nice design, Until I watched Travel Sketch on UA-cam. Unbelievable the amount of problems these poor people have had. Now I'am confused. If you had a million dollars, would you buy a sailing mono hull or a cat?

If you're like me you use Google maps, and cross reference with Apple and even Bing. Different seasons, different construction changes etc. For recon anyway... not getting around a new city.

And Google Earth is nice for getting a visualization of topography that maps doesn't give, and you don't have to interpret a topo.
