  • Jack PINKNEY and the horse Raphael try to jump a wall during the cross country at Pau CCI ***** 2019. Horse and rider are fine. The reins was broken during the cross country at the fence number 6 and the rider cannot have full control of his horse.

    and I believe now after watching this for about the hundredth time that the horse believed it was a brush fence. He saw the definition of the bottom of the fence and believed he could jump through the vertical lines - it looks a lot like a brush fence although of course we know it isn't but the horse believed his rider guided him to it, therefore he trusted his rider. Also, you can see the jumping effort was not to go over this wall as he could have easily jumped another meter higher, he thought he was casually jumping through it.

    I'm horrified on so many levels. Particularly with the rider's behaviour afterwards. On a professional level, I am fascinated. My current PhD research is looking into perception-action coupling in horse-rider dyads and the development of affordances for action.

      His anger was at himself. Because he didn’t pull his horse up earlier when his rein broke, and he allowed himself to put his horse in this situation. His anger wasn’t at his horse.

      I don’t care who is he angry at, his first reaction should have been checking on and taking care of his horse who just jumped into a solid wall. He was a total prat. He was tossing his whip and stomping about before the horse even got up.

    I have very mixed feelings about this. Not his fault about the broken rein. Faulty tack happens. But the best decision would’ve been to stop when it happened. Everyone knows in XC there are moments where you must release your reins a bit if you had a rough jump to avoid catching your horses mouth or causing an accident. If he was riding with just part of a rein on the left, there’s no way he would’ve been able to go down a down bank without getting pulled forward with the horse. Or frankly do many XC jumps as part of XC is showing you can have control with short reins or longer reins. But kudos to him to admitting it was his fault and recognizing the issue when he was approached by show officials. The tantrum he was throwing was anger at himself. Not at his elimination. Hopefully this was enough to convince him to not make this mistake again. Thankfully both horse and rider are okay.

    • @meganproffitt424
      @meganproffitt424 4 роки тому +1

      Jack felt safe enough on Stan that he felt he could continue until he lost control. If he would've completed with one rein, he would've been a hero, but everyone jumps the gun when he doesn't...

    • @cjjohnson5311
      @cjjohnson5311 2 роки тому +2

      What is there to have a mixed feeling about ? He NEVER should have continued. He could have killed that horse. Some people make honest mistakes like not estimating the proper strides to a jump, but continuing a ride that requires both reins for safety is someone who is all for himself. Not exactly the kind of horseman we need in any equestrian sports. And again, showing anger at himself before a concern for the horse is just narcissistic.

    I am the first person to criticize arm-chair critics. It is so easy to say what we would have done when we can't even ride at the level, never felt the pressures of owners, sponsors, etc. and weren't in the moment with our adrenaline up. I understand that we're all human, mistakes and miscalls happen and we have every right to make those but at some point, this level of rider needs to be held to some sort of standard. His rein broke at fence six, meaning he had the whole course to pull up. As well as XC riding literally teaches you to ride at the seat of your pants and that things don't go to plan. I don't see why someone riding at that level would not have enough experience to know better in this particular situation, considering how severe the consequences could've been. Regardless of whether he would've finished safely or trampled a crowd of spectators, it was dangerous riding and I believe it should be reprimanded.

    Not only was this a crappy rider - he's all over the horse, not balanced and not WITH the horse, he was definitely not concerned about the welfare of the horse but angry that the "stupid horse" did what he did.....which was what the STUPID RIDER directed him to do. Anyone with an once of understanding knows that a horse has a blind spot in front of it, they can't even SEE a jump when they get within about 10'-12' feet of it. They are jumping on blind faith and trust in their rider. This temper-tantrum idiot does not deserve to ever sit a horse again.

    • @beckyborden9552
      @beckyborden9552 4 роки тому +3

      His left rein broke earlier in the course. He's "all over the horse, not balanced and not WITH the horse" because he was trying to get his rein back. Discuss all you want about his decision making, whether he should have pulled up, and the tantrum he threw, but I don't think you can really call anyone riding around a 5* course, let alone most of it with one rein broken, a crappy rider.
      Also, horses can definitely see a jump when they get within 10-12 feet of it. They just have to look down the plane of their nose, hence why it's important for a horse to be able to put their head up when jumping. The blind spot is directly in front of and between their eyes.
