When he graduated from college no one was there to see him get his diploma.
He buried both of his parents before he was 21 years old and didn't have any aunts uncles, cousins or grandparents because they were killed in the holocaust.
That is why he got involved in the civil rights movement, he was alone, too old to be an orphan too young to be an adult who could look after himself, so he was looking for a family.
The Civil Rights movement sort of offered that, but after MLK and RFK were assassinated, it disintegrated. the Black Power Movement purged white people from leadership roles, and Bernie is a leader, not a follower, so he left and went to Vermont. Lived in his car and a maple syrup shack and did odd jobs. Trying to figure out what he was going to do with his life, all alone.
That is why the kids love him, he is still that kid in his 20's with anxiety about the future and survivors guilt, he understands their despair in a way that is sublime.

Bernie's parent died young and probably could have lived longer if they went to see a doctor got treatment for their medical conditions instead of putting money away for Bernie and his brother Larry's College.
He has done ok, he is a successful person, he is going to work into his eighties so he has earned enough money that his children wont have to work themselves to death to put their children through college, like his parents did.
He wants that for everyone.
That isn't a 'Revolutionary" concept.
Other countries with a lot less resources managed to provide a decent living wage, publicly provided healthcare and education and a sustainable economy without street battles and bloodshed.

If you can't imagine what that was like for a kid that age, terrifying and traumatic, you are some kind of monster.
He went from being a kid alone in an empty apartment moving his belongings into his car with no place to go, to being a US Senator and one of the most popular Politicians on the Planet, with a great chance to become the next President of the United States.

A persons brain and character are not really fully formed until they are 27 or so.
Unless someone is exceptional or a prodigy, like Cesar Augustus, Alexander the Great, or Cleopatra, at 20years old they are still an apprentice, or a journeyman at best, but not a Master at Life.
They still need adult supervision, mentoring, guidance and support when they are at University, that is why Colleges have 'Professors" and provide housing, and have cafeterias and utilities put into the cost of tuition with adults administrating them instead of 20 years olds running the campus and teaching each other courses.
Yes they can be tried as an adult, vote and enlist in the armed services and in some places drink, but by most metrics a 20 year old is an inexperienced and untested young man, who can't really handle the responsibility of managing their own affairs.

Have you heard Andrew Yang speak? Don't say others don't when Andrew Yang is actually talking about everything Bernie is saying and MORE. How is Bernie on technology and the future? Bernie is solving current problems with current levels of solution. Albert Einstein said "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." That's exactly describes all of Bernie's solutions and policies... current/ same kind of thinking. Andrew Yang's policies are far more advanced and beneficial for now & the future.
Example: Free College vs UBI = College = $50,000? and only benefits students. What about the rest of the population who are too old to go back to school? What happens when you graduate? You get a job with the government? Not so special when everyone else is working for the govt. Average govt wage will mostly drop to accommodate all the employees that they hire. UBI on the other hand, $12,000/year x life starting at 18 yrs. Avg American life expectancy is 79 yrs. Lifetime UBI payout = $732,000. So question is $50,000 free college or $732,000 over your lifetime. Sorry but Bernie was the best bet in 2016, for 2020 its Andrew Yang.

I would argue Andrew Yang is head to head with him in progressiveness and has been dealing with significantly more hurdles than Bernie has during their campaigns though.

Cuba is a totalitarian state. The kind of socialism Bernie advocates for is democratic in nature, working alongside our current capitalist market system. Have you ever heard Bernie push for the dissolution of all private markets? Of course not. The only market Bernie wants to nationalize is the healthcare industry, and for good reason; compared to other 1st world nations (all of which have some form of nationalized healthcare), our healthcare system is burdensome and costly. Outcomes are also much worse due to a lack of preventative care. The system as it exists will cost us upwards of 50 trillion over the next ten years. Under a Medicare-for-All system, we'd save 10 trillion dollars or more over the same period. Cutting out the middle-man (the insurance companies) will do away with needless bureaucracy and ensure that everyone has equal access to healthcare.
All Bernie wants is a system that benefits the average American, rather than a system built around those at the very top of the economic ladder. His ideas are not all that radical. He's essentially an FDR Democrat.

What Bernie is proposing is social democracy, what he calls democratic socialism.

History and current material conditions prove this as correct. Bernie wants to create a system where less of the profits that workers make are stolen from them, reducing the massive wealth-gap between the rich and the poor.
His answer legitimately made me tear up. It is HARD to get me to cry, but seeing the genuineness and care this man has is heartwarming.

The name they use to describe their own system is "Socialism with Chinese characteristics". Only politically illiterate people believe China is currently communist.
