  • The Model 40N is Marantz latest amplifier. It combines a class A/B amplifier, phonostage, DAC, and the HEOS streaming module. Could this be the one box solution that many audiophiles have been looking for?

Hi Tarun. Another well balanced review as expected.
I'm a huge fan of Marantz gear, I still have a vintage tuner 2060ML which I purchased in 1979. It still sounds the biz.
There are two camps of hi-fi users (audiophiles if you like). Those that love to dance around from the first note, or I coined a phrase "instant impact", with amps such as Naim, Cyrus and suchlike. However, over longer listening sessions this 'get up and go' presentation can grate on you. And there's those where the sound slowly envelops your senses, great to live with. Marantz falls into the latter. Very few companies can combine to the two.
Little bit disappointed the late great Ken Ishiwata isn't mentioned as his influence with Marantz goes back years.
Am I a purist? No, but I like a certain sound that you can enjoy for hours a day without reaching for the painkillers.
In that respect I don't class myself as a true audiophile - the music comes first then buy the best system I can afford.
Big fan fan of Marantz amps but never purchased one, despite demoing many budget and midrange models over the years.

For people such as myself, who have better hearing in one ear than the other, balance controls are very welcome. I wish more amplifier manufacturers would take this into consideration. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, I enjoyed it very much.

I think DACs and streaming platforms/technology is only getting better and more affordable, separates also allows me to customise my sound preferences better!
That said, as all in one amps go, these Marantz Amps are great value!
So great review are always Taran!

Great review Tarun. I've been into Marantz since the late K.Ishiwata took the helm and made some great sub 1k amps and cd players in the 90's/2000's. I am still using my KI CD player today and wouldn't trade it in for something more modern. It has a warm and sweet presentation that I still enjoy today. For my main system I will always go the purist route, but I would go for convenience where space and lifestyle are the main factors.

Well done, as always Tarun. Thank you for the hard work you put into these reviews.
For me, I just enjoy the oddness, and little ritual of separates. CD transport, DAC, tube preamp, and monoblocs. I find it enhances the experience. And CD (or LP) encourages one to be still and listen.
And aren't we blessed. If I want to listen to a Beethoven symphony, or any other musical experience, I flip a couple switches, wait a few minutes, press go (or for some, lower the stylus) and Yahtzee.

Another great review Tarun! Actually exactly what I was looking for! I heard the Marantz M30 last week and was amazed on its abilities!! Especially because Marantz is using a Hypex Class D Poweramp section for this model. I wondered about the 40 - and here you go… 👍🏻😃
You were asking about where we stand with All-in-one vs seperate box solutions. Well, 1 year ago I would have aimed for a all-in-one system, but the longer I think about the more I favor seperate boxes. Too big the changes in electronic assesories…
I look for a great new amplifier this year. I heard the Exposure 2510 and 3510. Also I heard Cyrus i7 XR. They all go a bit in the same direction. All 3 very nice in its own way but not convincing to me. I heard Rotel 1592 and it’s on my shortlist as a brand and soundscape (but this box is too big for me) and I heard, as I said, Marantz M30. For me, this is the best what I heard so far !! Wide, deep, convincing!

Tarun….LOVED the history of Marantz and the wonderful imagery!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 The whole video could have been that for me! I am definitely in the purist camp w/all separates here, for my music listening . I have a tube preamp, powerful SS power amp, R2R DAC, dedicated streamer, etc. That being said Marantz handles my AVR duties and I own a silver Marantz SACD 30n for my disc spinning which includes that incredible styling of this 40n Amp. It also has a HEOS Streamer onboard which I use with my Amazon music subscription, at times. Like you said….I just LOVE all the choices and flavors that we have out there.

Love the look of this and the warm, rich sound would be very appealing to me but I really wish they would add a loudness control. My main system is built around a Yamaha R-N803D which is perfect for me as I stream music and listen mainly via Airplay. The 803 does this superbly but the main reason I love it is the loudness control. When not listening at the usual high levels of volume where the 803 really shines, I can happily sit with it at low volumes without losing the lows and highs. The music remains warm, rich and full of timbre even when just running as background music. Just turning the music down as normal and the music sounds thin and is not enjoyable. I have found this with all amplifiers I have owned. Please add a loudness control. Great review as usual 👍🏻

If you get the opportunity you should take some time to evaluate the Denon PMA 110 Aniversery amplifier.
After many years of owning many amplifiers & just considering Denon as another Japanese manufacturer, but never hi end, my preconceptions have now been dashed, and have purchased this model,to which I can not speak highly enough.
My own caparision is against amplifiers costing up too four times its price & I consider I have a bargain in my present system.......keep up the good work....

I've always really liked Marantz kit. I do worry when companies go from one owner to another as corporate goals tend to come with the ownership, however it sounds like the current owners are trying to maintain the ethos of Marantz. I am very impressed with the build quality.
One thing that I do not understand is the desire to go and roll their own in-house streaming systems and not include Roon. Personally I use Roon and I like the flexibility it gives and works with pretty much all of the kit I have here or take it out with me. It also supports Qobuz which I use since ditching Tidal a while ago which HEOS doesn't appear to do. This would be a blocker to my purchase.

Looking forward to your Elac UBR62's review! They're my main speakers for some time now, and I am I'm really happy with them. They have this smooth and relaxing tone to them, without skimping on the detail department. Just what I was looking for. Imaging and Soundstage are also very good. They lack a bit in the bass department (I'm on the market for a subwoofer), but mids and highs are very good. Also I think they aren't that great in low volumes; they really start to come alive when one reaches reasonable volumes. They aren't very picky with gear or placement. Being front ported helps, i guess. I bought them new for 650 euros, I think it was a great deal!

I’ve thought about this topic a lot and for me convenience is King - the easier it is for me to listen to music (critically, or otherwise), the more music I will listen to, and therefore enjoy. My technical enjoyment of this past time strongly pushes me toward separates due to their endless potential and tinkering allure, however ultimately I recognize i will get a net increased enjoyment if I can walk in the living room and fire up a song from standby on my phone. I haven’t heard it yet but I’m pretty much settled on the Yamaha RN2000A

During my hifi journey I have yo yo -ed from convenient to purist.
Arcam solo to meridian g95 to meridian 800 series / DSPs and I then opted for a ch precision i1 ( integrated amp with dac , streamer and phono stage ). However the dac wasn’t much better than the meridian 808 and so I decided to pass on the integrated Ch precision i1 and ended up with a more separates focused set up which sounds better . I run a dCS dac / cd player into a power amp and use a Melco as a server ( instead of as a streamer ). I am now looking for a pre amp with headphone amp / phono stage built in but thats a tricky one !

Taren, I love a warm, rich, dense sound with rolled off highs. A good (2.1 channel) competitor to the Marantz 40N is the Denon 1600ne integrated amp (high current, 70W into 8ohms, 140W into 4). It’s the baby brother to the Denon A110 you reviewed. In the future, hope you review the Denon 1600ne, or its newer Denon 1700ne (basically same amp w/added external pre-in option).
    My 2.1 channel music system:
    - Denon 1600ne amp (use internal DAC)
    - Wharfedale Denton 85 bookshelves
    - SVS SB-2000 Pro subwoofer (550W RMS)
    - BlueSound Node (use sub-out)
Absolute pure musical bliss (to my ears) every time I turn my system on :-)

I still am an A/V person with the Marantz 8015 as my go to and it is programed for two set ups: 2 channel LFE at 145w/channel , and 7.2.4 at 100w/channel. That programmable ability is what convinced me to buy it when it first came out and my serial #42 is proof. lol

I'm all about pure and uncompromising solutions. I find it useful to build a system with separates. Since most of the current solutions use digital streaming, I still expect much to happen with new technical innovations (I expect R2R DAC's to improve a bit further).
I recognize that it is difficult to find and match the right components, but the result may allow for maximum "fidelity" even if a bit harder to your wallet.

    Good Morning Tarun,
Another wonderful video. Marantz, in my view, has been known for excellent products at a very reasonable price-point for what you get. I have a Marantz SACD player myself, and it is really good. I wanted to ask your opinion on a pre-amplifier. I am thinking of replacing my current Adcom GFP-815 with a Parasound Halo P6. The Parasound offers a good bit of connectivity that the Adcom does not. Do you know anything about the Parasound P6? Have you tried one?

Don’t have to wonder what club I belong to Tarun. I follow the purist philosophy and for good reason. Extracting all that any media has to give and forgiving not for media that doesn’t measure up is the way to go. Some do not agree and I also understand their side as they tend to want to enjoy their gear in a different way. I’ve been on both sides of this fence. It is up to individual taste and what one conceives as to what choice is to be made. There are many factors to consider. Each carries a certain weight and how far the wallet and tastes can bare. There is not any one correct choice as this is a hobby of individual desire for any given price point. As we grow in our journey our choices can change and mature. Hopefully our wallets may open and find we can get that component we want if we sacrifice somewhere else. Choices are ours to make regardless. Each must choose their own path. We have you Tarun to open our minds and educate us. This guidance is helpful. The magazines were the guide or salespersons in stores back in the day. Opinions vary. We must also choose who to guide us in our journey. This is where Tarun comes in. He brings honesty and integrity into the mix. Sure we know where he stands, but he isn’t trying to hide his choices either. Respect for this honesty and openness goes to him. Anyone you choose, you must trust in them. Otherwise, why bother. Knowing when and who to trust is important. Go for the honest ones. Let them know your expectations and they are better to guide you. My choices are based on ability to reveal the truth in any media. This is hard as the media becomes the limiting factor. You want easy, go elsewhere. The truth is sometimes harder on your ears. Choices can help and so can trustworthy people. Listen to Tarun. He can help!

I think the great thing about Marantz versus some products is they typically have a house sound and you either like that house sound or you don't. As you found they have a very big and bold sound that's slightly soft but always fun. But not overly fun at least not in the way where you would get tired of it, because on the contrary you can listen to a Marantz amplifier all day long.
Another good thing or some people might could say a bad thing, is the fact that house sound of the 40n is the same sound prevalent throughout their product range. Obviously that can be a bad thing because as you move up into more pricey components you might be expecting better performance however what I've often found over the years is whether you buy their bottom barrel integrated amplifier or top of the line $5,000 amplifier, what you're getting is a more mature refined sound as you spend more money. It still retains that same characteristic of big and bold and fun but offsets it slightly by having a more refined presentation.
I've had numerous older Marantz from the '70s as well as their newer products and in my opinion they're one of the few legacy manufacturers still producing products whose sound is remarkably similar to its vintage counterpart.
I do get the impression that ultimately you didn't care for it, only because I feel you implied that you tend to be more of that listener that wants that Sonic precision and is willing to give up that easy going palatable character to achieve it.
Sorry to be so long-winded but wonderful video as always and keep up the good work, oh and long live tone controls.😊

I chose it as my primary hifi system. Never let me down. Of course with an all in one solution if something reaches it's end of life you cannot just replace it. It's like a modern car - except the tires which is analogous to me to the speakers.... - you have to bring it to the garage so they can just repair it. However, it's built like a tank, very good, has the wife acceptance factor, DAMN GOOD phono section. I suppose they always adjust the DACs. They don't just throw in the dac chip and let it work like most of the chi-fi dacs which sounds good but lack of personality (some chi-fi on the other end very musical and don't just try to achieve the lowest noise, highest sinad etc, like denafrips, gustard more expensive ones). But I compared some solutions and it's not like a normal ESS DAC... however, I was a bit sad when I learned that AKM will be replaced but it was inevitable of course. But I like the Marantz sound I can tell you it's gives you an exceptional listening experience in an untreated room as well and with the good recordings it's very very revealing and a bit forgiving with worse ones as well. The synergy you mentioned. They didn't just want to tick the checkboxes but you have a very well built system with synergy between each component. I just bought a Revival Atalante 3 and man.... it was more balanced than my entry/mid level Focals. Of course the singers voice was more emphasised with Focal but with the atalante it seems to be more natural, still not sterile and a wider soundstage.... I love this. If it was not availabel maybe I would go for Atoll (maybe a pimped IN100 from a German Atoll reseller whom replace some parts, provide more isolation between the boards etc.). How do you compare this with an Atoll IN100 or 200 Signature?

I would like to see a comparison of amplifiers under £1000 such as Mission 778X Integrated Amplifier, Audiolab, etc., and possible pairings with speakers also around a similar price point, give or take. I think this would be helpful for those entering into this hobby but at a more audiophile level and also for those who just want a well performing system for many years as well for a still sane price.
Amps and speakers that cost many thousands may provide improvements but there should be sufficient, more budget friendly considerations available that gets one a good way there in both a cost and size factor that most people in that market may consider for themselves.
the lowest price points seem to be chfi class d amps at or around a £100 or even US$, with many dacs around £/$300 and speakers up to but even well under £/$1000. I think there could be alot of options for a complete system well under or even up to £/$2,000, give or take that could appeal to many, many people in price and performance and not be considered low end products. System synergy at various price points is valid and significant. Perhaps even a sub could be included., for example the RSL SPEEDWOOFER 10S MKII, among some others.
So a step above the lowest products in price but significantly more performance. If one can afford more expensive products, the sky is the limit but system synergy still prevails. IMO, a less expensive can outperform more expensive products within certain constraints, like loudness requirements, room, overall SQ, etc., but system synergy is the key IMO.

As for your question about convenience? If I can stream Bit-Perfect from Qobuz that's all I need. Since Heos doesn't support Qobuz and the Marantz lacks a USB port that makes it a pass for me. @@abritishaudiophile7314 Hi Tarun, in 2023 it is kind of hard to imagine that Heos doesn't support Qobuz. I do believe that Heos supports UPNP, so either Bubble-UPNP (Android) or M-Connect (IOS) can stream Qobuz to the Marantz. Also, with Studio now supporting UPNP that could be an option as well. However, there is just something troubling about the USB port being missing when the $900 Yamaha (S801) and all the Rotel pieces from the A12 and up provide a USB port. If I were to make an educated guess, it's either a licensing issue with Qobuz or a firmware/hardware issue on Marantz/Denon's part. Your favorite Yamaha WXA streaming amp (with MusicCast) lacks Qobuz as well. Yamaha indicated that all their devices designed prior to 2019 would not contain Qobuz, which leads me to think it's a hardware/firmware issue. The Marantz 40N sure looks good, and likely sounds pretty good, but 70 Watts? I have gone the separate route, although I do like a good quality phono stage, for convenience sake. I’m also a fan of full-range speakers because of the difficulty I’ve had integrating subwoofers. They’re OK for home theater, but for faithful music reproduction, I just think they fall short, at least in my hands. But I’m still sorting this all out, so my opinions (and system) may evolve. But right now I don’t have bookshelf speakers in my main system.

I have re-thought my objection to the 70 Watt power ‘restriction.’ I suppose I’ve been influenced a bit by a recent search for a ‘500 Watt minimum’ power to properly drive a set of electrostatic speakers. I’ve also been recently educated on vagrancies of manufacturer’s power specifications, it matters greatly how the power rating is derived. I was also reminded that one of the most popular McIntosh tube amp year-in year-out is their MC-275 (2 channels, 75 Watts (each?). Finally, even when I crank my dual 250 Watt stereo amps up to ‘Max’ (over 90 dB), the blue meters up front tell me I’m putting out about 25 Watts. My old electronics professor always said, “You only need 25 Watts.” How much of the rest do you need for ‘headroom’ 10:28 to drive the transients? I’ve noticed there are many fine receivers and integrated amplifiers that offer less than 100 Watts. So, 70 Watts May be sufficient, or adequate, for most users. I would be very interested to learn at what point it would start clipping, and whether or not it could properly drive speakers rated at 4 Ohms. Also, how does Marantz derive their power ratings? Are they ‘on the edge?’ Or are they generally conservative In their ratings? Do they measure full sweep (20Hz-20kHz), or single tone (for instance, 1,000 Hz). From your general thoroughness, and given the detail you offer in this, and your reviews of other products, I sense that the Marantz will hold up under ‘normal’ use in an average space with a typical 8 Ohm speaker load. If power were lacking, I imagine you would have mentioned it. [Note: Although it might appear so, I am not replying to my own post, but attempting to extend it. I would love to give this Marantz a listen in my space, the product (a streaming amplifier) just makes so much sense to me.

Wonder if the model 40n would be a better match for my Monitor Audio Gold 300 5G instead of my Rega Elex-R? I do find the Elex-R gives a slightly forward, possibly bright sound, particularly on dome female vocals.

One more thing Tarun, if I may ask:
How would you compare the NAD M10 to the Marantz 40 in respect to Sound quality?

Two very different sounding amplifiers. The Model 40N is warm whilst the M10 has an analytical nature 😊
