I really enjoyed this review. This little amp sounds like it might be a hit. Steve's description of the DAC section reminds me of the DAC section in my Denon pma 1600ne which has a very sweet sound, but is not as detailed as some of the DACS coming out of China. However, the sweet sound is addictive and I can listen to it for hours. Digital has come a long ways.
I'm having a hard time deciding between this and the Technics SU-GX70. I would pull the trigger on the Technics rn if it had more watts per channel. I'm buying it for a relatively small room, but I've always purchased amps with an abundance of power. I like to have that grip on the lower end and the option of using it in a larger room if I ever wanted to. It probably sounds like I'm answering my own question, but the Technics is the better watt to watt integrated (imo), and it's less money. Anything you think would help me make this decision would be appreciated.
I've had Marantz gear touch my system many times since the 70's. And they all added a specific color to the music. It's very listenable and can cover many source flaws. I currently have a Marantz ND8606 Network player, and I'm sure that this units DAC is based on the 8606 DAC it is very analog sounding but it does have a fixed set of filters hence the unique color. I have a PrimaLuna Tube DAC for my music listening but I still prefer the Marantz for watching movies.
It would have been really cool of you could decode DSD through that HDMI port. Why this is only available through an AVR is dumbfounding. Also, it's great they did, and you pointed out, put in a great built in phono stage. Honestly, I have a bunch of Receivers, integrates, and preamps with awesome phono amps built in, all as good or, in many cases, better than, the Mani. I finally ended up selling my Mani when people were paying stupid prices for them the last couple months. I just never needed to use it.
Hi Steve. Thank you for the review. I am old enough to remember when made in Japan was considered low quality. Then things turned around and made in Japan was considered high quality. But I'm wondering nowadays if made in Japan is really any better quality than made in China or made in Viet Nam or any number of other places. But this looks like a good integrated amp but at that price point I would prefer an amp that doesn't have all of those built-in bells and whistles such as a built-in streamer.
It’s been probably five years since I heard the outlaw in my system, so I really can’t say. I am amazed by reviewer’s who have that capacity to mentally compare products over years or decades
You have a little ribbon speakers from magnapan. I thought you had those when they first came out to review. Did you buy them or are you just re-reviewing them?
FYI the model 30 has the moving coil phono preamps, preamp in and preamp out. But all analog. No digital. In the 30 series the 30n source for cd/streaming is meant to be used with the integrated. I have the model 30 integrated and it is a beautiful integrated.
I love my SACD30n. Not sure why it did not get much "love" from the audio reviewer community. Anyways, curious what speakers you are using with the Model30 amp ? Thx.
@@ptg01 I am using an old pair of Bowers and Wilkins 640i floor-standers . The m30 brings out the best in those old towers. Forced to choose, it's weird that Marantz gave 40n an "Amp In" rather than a "Pre Out". A typical upgrade path is to graduate to a more powerful amp, which is impossible with this integrated. That would be a deal breaker for me if I was in the market for one.
Steve did comment on that in a Reply to a guy who asked if the 40n is an upgrade to his Outlaw, Steve said NO. I was pleasantly surprised Steve saw that comment and more surprised he replied, kinda cool.
I'm not a reviewer but the DWs require time to burn in, work with positioning and angle (back down front up or get them 8-12" off the ground) for their height limitations are critical. I have a expensive pair of upgraded DWs from the last release and own all ML 519/585/526/332s gear and some expensive speakers...there is no comparison and they are not giant killers. -Steve did a review on them-lots of input from owners

Hey Steve, do you think this would be a huge upgrade going from an Outlaw Audio rr2160 mk2 in sound quality? I'm driving a pair of Kef R3's in a 12X16 room.
I've had the outlaw and while I thought it was good sound for the money to me it kind of sounded monotonal. Like you didn't get a sense of the timbre as well as the color of music as much as other amps I've heard. I recently purchased a Marantz PM 8006 which is very similar to the new model 40 and it is quite literally a night and day difference.

I have the Model 30 and it sounds like the Model 40N had a similar sound stage. The Model 30 is 100 wpc (possibly Class D amp), has a pre-amp out, power amp in, and handles both MC and MM phono cartridges. It is $500 US more but I was lucky to purchase mine at $2500 just before $500 price increase in December. The Model 30 does not have all of the digital inputs, which is fine for me because I’m an…analog kid…and play strictly vinyl, cassette, or reel to reels. It would be interesting to get your take on how the Model 40 sound compares to the Model 30. Great segment, by the way.
Lucky you to get the Model30 before the $500 price increase. It is Class D for sure hence I hesitated. Not sure why. But I love my SACD30n that is meant to pair with the Model30..

My next add on - yes and if so what would be a comparable amp at this price . Note- analog nut . Thanks , I value your thinking on my next BIG upgrade .
It's interesting that you mentioned the phono stage. I've never had a serious problem with the built in phono stages sound on any amps that I can remember.

DED NSIDE, can you elaborate on your experience with the differences b/w these two amps? My room is decent sized and also use the system for TV. What speakers are you using? Phono stage not as crucial to me, nor is the streaming section of the 40N as I use Bluesound anyway. HDMI is a plus on the Marantz, but the Technics just absolutely looks better. Technics, Marantz 40N and the Parasound Hint 6 are in the running for my next piece. One box solution with tone control is mandatory for the rig in this room.
@@stuarthenderson6200 I would go with the marantz for your set up. The technics is most impressive as far as bieng clean and entertaining guests with records. Where its lacking is power. A thought on your quick reference to the Maggie LRS vs Klipsch Cornwall IV …I’ve owned Several Maggie’s (among many $20k plus speakers) and I must say that the Klipsch are extremely revealing of ancillary gear. They can create an enveloping soundscape when properly fed and set up. The Maggie’s just can’t delver the realistic dynamics of actual instruments. They paint a large, tonally compelling and open sound field but lack the engagement that comes from live instruments. The C4’s deliver the gestalt that you are in front of the performers, with none of the constraints inflicted upon them as when heard through the planar speakers.
I enjoy switching back and forth between my maggies and my Klipsch. The maggies do things the Klipsch can't and the Klipsch fo things the maggies can't. Variety is the spice of life.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but for me and in speaking with my active musician friends who are audiophiles as well, the consensus seems that we tend to favor horn speakers (i.e. Klipsch) because of the dynamics , sibilance, and accuracy of “live” analog instruments (as opposed to electronically produced musical sounds) reproduced by horn loaded speakers. Just one personal opinion based upon a limited specific input from one specific spectrum of musically literate colleagues. 😉 Your experience may differ and that’s equally important as well. My “work” here today is not complete because I’m going to be busy putting down floors as I still am recovering from Hurricane Ida Damage almost 7 months ago. 🙁 Thanks Steve for another really fine analysis of a Marantz product.
Hi Steve. I really enjoy your reviews but I do think this one missed the mark a little. I think with a product like this this you need to talk about all the features in a little more in depth IMHO. Like I said enjoy what you do. Please keep up the great work 👍😊
I have their previous reference series PM14S1 integrated, how would you compare this new model to the PM14S1? I very much enjoy the PM14S1, it's a very neutral almost tube like sounding solid state amp.
I bought a Marantz SACD player back in 2014 for roughly 2K USD and no part of that case felt 'plasticky' - I realize that's less important than the amp's performance but it's not encouraging. For the sake of keeping the beancounters happy, I can't help feeling that this is a false economy.

I picked it up at the thrift store for $100 and that's what they seem to go for $100 - $300 range.. depends if you find one with the remote or not... it's a 10+-year-old piece of equipment, but it lost like 97% of its value / on the Other hand I recently bought a used: Primare I20 from Sweden for $350, but they go for $1299 new - dedicated 2-channel audiophile amp and also about 10 years old and, well I did get a good deal, but these sell for about $500 to $600 used, maybe more - it lost a fraction of its original value compared to the other Brand, maybe 50% or 40% - depending on the deal you get... / I mean there is a big difference in lost value between these Brands... as just one example... more serious dedicated equipment seems to keep its value and these integrated amps do not, be warned! Now I can't say anything about this Marantz, made in Japan, probably more on the limited series, but who knows, looks pretty awesome too!

Marantz's *extremely* poor tone controls are the reason I keep refusing to buy a Marantz amp -- even though, in other respects, I would LOVE to buy this one. Marantz chooses to boost a very narrow peak at 50 Hz in the bass and at 15 kHz in the treble. The result is that all you hear is some extra hiss in the treble and some hard thumping way down low. It doesn't allow you alter the tone in a musically satisfying way. BOO Marantz. To see what I'm talking about, look at the tone control measurements in the Stereophile review of the 40n.

Have you ever reviewed the Marantz PM8006 ?? Also made in Japan I believe , what are your thoughts on that ??
Nice review, I purchased silver gold model and it is perfect for my setup, front center panel is Aluminum….

I have a Denon AVR and would like to get some amp for the fronts. How would you compare Denon pma-1700ne with the Marantz 40n?
So why can't they make knobs turn as silky smooth today as they did in the '70s?
Can I use banana audio connectors With this model? Or I should buy spades?
I have tried spade connectors but Nakamichi 24k Gold Beryllium Copper banana connectors are easy to plug in and are suitable for 40n in my opinion….

Great review. Love your background wall designs as well
It would have been really cool of you could decode DSD through that HDMI port.
How would this amp pair with a set of Heresy 4s? This is one of the amps on my short list.

You have a little ribbon speakers from magnapan. I thought you had those when they first came out to review. Did you buy them or are you just re-reviewing them?
No, I did not buy them. They were used by other reviewers for a couple of years, and they’re back here for use on another project.

Technics gu700mk2 all day . I do like my marantz but the technics is the one especially the phono section. A little light on power so dont have a a big room , otherwise a better integrated.
@@stuarthenderson6200
I would go with the marantz for your set up. The technics is most impressive as far as bieng clean and entertaining guests with records. Where its lacking is power. In my large room i have jbl studio 590's which are huge basically . On my halfler amp with a marantz those speakers could probably break the windows in my old studio. So in your case i guess the marantz because it does it all and has more power. The technics is cleaner i guarantee that by a fair margin and perfect for not getting rumble from a turntable.
@@scottyo64 True
@@scottyo64 Yup!

"Knob feel, silky smooth japanese receivers' !! As we say this side of the pond-"oh er missus"
I bought a Marantz SACD player back in 2014 for roughly 2K USD and no part of that case felt 'plasticky' - I realize that's less important than the amp's performance but it's not encouraging. For the sake of keeping the beancounters happy, I can't help feeling that this is a false economy.

An idea for maybe a future video: you should talk about how some equipment keeps its value and some not / for example: I have a Denon AVR-4810CI / this was originally a $3000 piece of equipment, it's for movies, but can be used for 2-channel and it sounds pretty damn good also!
Interesting topic for sure... as a significant majority of audio equipment will lose its value rapidly... just like driving a brand new car off the dealer lot !!! This hobby is indeed an expense, not a good financial investment ! But the ROI is mostly 'satisfaction', 'happiness' etc. :)
