In our court system, when you commit a crime, the judge, though he may be kind-hearted and wants to forgive you, he can not simply forgive you and let you go free. In order to be a just judge, he must sentence you to a punishment. Then once the punishment is meted out, then the time paid, then and only then does he say your sentence is finished and society NOW FORGIVES YOU. God is the same, a just judge. He could not and would not forgive mankind of their sins until the price for sin was paid. Jesus paid that price in full, dying once for all men, for all time, for all sins. Jesus came to become the perfect sacrifice, to allow men to have Him tortured and nailed naked to a cross, to shed His blood, to give His perfect sinless life, as a sacrifice for sin, to die, be buried, and to go to Hell in your place and then to rise again. It was ONLY then that God COULD FORGIVE mankind, AFTER the price was paid, the punishment executed. God has now forgiven us of all sins. God tells us to be reconciled to Him as He is now reconciled to us. 2 Corinthians 5:18- "And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
