  • Jon, one of our service techs, shows you the proper way to disassemble, clean, and reassemble a Hayward EC-65 filter. We're using BioGuard's StripKwik which is a pool filter cleaner and degreaser.
We recommend always chemically cleaning your filter at the end of the season before storing it for the winter and again mid-season if needed. We recommend BioGuard's StripKwik which acts as a degreaser.
Just hosing off your filter before putting it away is like washing dishes without the soap!

I had to clean my filter fingers once in 5 years. I was advised to soak in Trisodium Phosphate to remove the oil and film. It does not suds and worked amazingly

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video! You literally saved me close to $700 on a replacement nest

Good and accurate video. However be very careful using impact or any power tool on pvc or plastic equivalent. I see a lot of cracked pieces and stripped valve bodies because of this. Just be careful. Thanks

Thanks! Because of this video I was able to get the 4 tools needed from my truck and complete the cleaning in under 30 minutes. I didn't have the vessel to soak the nest, but this got us back to filtering quickly. Will properly clean it at the end of the season now! JE

Good video......need to advise folks NOT TO USE a typical high pressure pressure washer on the fingers, as they will surely rip the material that makes up the fingers. Also, would be nice to show folks how to reassemble the bolts on the top of the filter, using 'hand tools' (strongly advise NOT using a power drill to tighten the bolts to avoid cracking the top or bottom of the filter) and the cross-tightening pattern to avoid over tightening the bolts.

40 year old filter design, guaranteed repairs, disassemble several times a season expensive repair parts, get a different filter

Trust me you do not have to remove the handle you can skip that part and just pull the fingers out and rinse with water hose and put back in, they also now make a easier filter replacement but that cost about 1200 dollars that has only 1 screw to take the filter out

I'm with Ge. Have experienced leaks as well. I've been looking all over for a torque lbs rating on how tight those lid bolts are supposed to be. I am sick of leaking but don't want to crack it. GREAT VIDEO THOUGH... THANKS FOR YOUR THROUGH PRESENTATION.

jomama honestly if you gasket is seated correctly and in good shape, you can almost hand tighten them and you should have no leaks. It is indicative of another problem. Dirty fingers leading to increased pressure are one of them.

YES!!! My filter/pump is the Hayward EC65 with a Pentair Inteleflo. I am the second owner and was unfamiliar with both the DE type of filters AND the power of that pump. The day that I posted my initial response to this video, I broke apart the pump and used a cleaning solution specifically formulated for the DE fingers--along with my electric pressure washer. When i put it back together, the sound of the pump motor was virtually silent in comparison to before AND the dripping was GONE!. My Conclusion is: that filter housing gasket is only as good as the cleanliness of the DE fingers AND---listen to your pump. It will tell you when something is wrong in the system.

Hi Jon, thanks for the great video. The one question I have is that you show pressure cleaning the container but you don't show how to then drain the water from there. You said to rinse all the DE out, but then how did you get the DE and water out? Pump? Bucket? I'm pretty sure I can't pick up the container and turn it upside down. Thanks.

Great video! What is the pressure supposed to be at startup and what should it be after running for a few hours?

I have a rusted out 1.5 hp proflo pump motor attached to a hayward de filter assy, (like yours here which I've already cleaned - thanks fir the vid).. I would like to change just the motor, leaving the pump and piping intact. It looks a straight forward process. The pump was running until recently (the rusted out part of the motor housing was under the motor - hidden from view.) Your thoughts?

What is the rattling noise that I heard when you turned the nest upside down. I hear that is a used one that I bought and need to know if there is a problem.

I have a brand new one and it rattles. Like a piece of plastic is spinning in the top of the water.

Why is my pressure always going high? As soon as i start it it's at 15 and within minutes goes to 20. Does DE hurt or help pressure? I hate these filters!
I've taken my filter apart and soak it in marionic acid overnight and rinced it off too. Do I need new fingers? They look fine.

Never use a pressure washer. Here's how I have been cleaning my:
I have been doing this for about 10 seasons, since I live in NY. Rinse it using the garden hose, also I don't take the top lid off, mine has a metal belt secured by one bolt and spring, easy to do it. Than I mix the dishwasher soap, 1 cup per 5 gallons of water. Soak them for at least 8 hours. I got a tall 5 gallon bucket, the ones that come with calcium for snow/ ice melting, they're taller, perfect size to dip the fingers in and keep them totally submersed. After 8 hours or so, overnight if you prefer, I use the garden hose with a jet nozzle, and while spraying the water I rub my hands up and down on the fingers, go eazy on spreading them around, the insert can break easily if you bend them too far from each other. Actually I should make a video showing, I'm not into making videos. Let it dry and store it.
