Putin can get a lot over there, North Korea is an independent country who are relying on itself, contrary to the South Korea and Japan which are under some sort of colonial occupation by America in military and international political views. North Korea can get Russia to test out (at the Ukraine arena) and finetune the North Korean weapon systems (Russia is champion at fine tuning weapon systems). That will be the biggest gain for North Korea.
For Russia, the mere fact that North Korea is onboard is more than enough and this can pressure Japan and South Korea from misbehaving too badly or blindly following USA's instructions.
