Bodhidharma Founder of Zen Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu:
Bodhidharma was born in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu(Southern India) in AD 440 as the third son of the Pallava king Skandavarman IV(460-480). At an early age he learned the martial arts and warfare of the Tamils. Due to his interest in Buddhism, he later studied Dhyana Buddhism and became the 28th patriarch of that religion.
In 527 AD, 32 years after Ba Tuo’s founding of the Shaolin temple, Bodhidharma crossed through Guangdong province into China to spread Dhyana Buddhism. According to Chinese legend, he taught Buddhism at Shaolin Monastery and initiated the physical training of monks, which led to the creation of Zen Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu.
