Not subtle by any definition of the word. He used that specific quote because in the script the prop is required to literally fit in a purse. That’d be like saying “Bruce Willis is a ghost” is foreshadowing. His wife not paying attention to him, the little details themself are foreshadowing, not the act in question. “The gun needs to fit on a holster on his waist.”
@@TheVictoriousShotThe time in which this video came out and Adam visited, no one had seen BR2049. It’s 100% foreshadowing. He was alluding to a character moment in the film in which the skeleton is put in Luv’s purse.
KADArt Cosplay I paused the video and came to the comments immediately after that, I laughed pretty hard and needed to see if other people picked up on it. I hope Adam watches this video and notices that little Easter egg. I know he was there but he might not have thought anything of it in the moment, considering this video was made prior to the movie release.
He tossed in a bit of the industry typical word salad, but not to the point we didn't get what he was talking about. Which as you said, made it far more open about what they do
It would be amazing for films like this, if the studios would release detailed plans of the props. People talking about the film and recreating the props (to greater accuracy because of the plans) would keep the fandoms alive and the films in the heads of the masses.
Agreed. I know a second camera operator is not a minor expense, but the alternative is me wishing the video would cut to a tighter shot that would never come. It factored into the viewing experience for sure. Reality shooting needs coverage!
For a lot of it they are just standing still. You wouldn’t need a secondary shooter just a second camera on a tripod camera or as you said on a slider. Other option is just use a zoom lens and get coverage of the props being spoken about after the interview and tour sections. I suspect it’s a budget reason for only having 1 shooter
Seen this movie 5 times now and can't get enough of it. This is awesome to actually see all the props from this perspective and just having a moment of bliss recalling on how these props were being used in all the scenes of BR2049. fascinating!!
Prop at 13:11 is a Vietnam era PRC6 portable radio repainted for the blade runner universe - in case anyone wants to try to replicate one. I love seeing the production videos for these movies.
I wish this video was as long as the movie!! I could’ve spent hours going into every little detail of every prop. But still awesome to be able to see what we could thanks guys!
Clearly you have never watched the original. Blade Runner was so good BECAUSE it didn't get down to the level of every other scifi action movie of the time. The Blade Runner franchise is pure sci-fi mixed with film noir, and relies on suspense and character exploration rather than on shiny action scenes and fast moving shots. Blade Runner will linger on a scene or a dialogue and rub your nose in it. BR2049 was really good, and I am glad Denis Villeneuve continued on his uncompromising trend he has been on. Montreal represent!
I haven't seen the movie yet, so I can't comment on if it was good or not, but too much action is basically what's ruining a lot of movies nowadays. Look at all of the Marvel movies. It's basically 99% running around fighting and blowing up shit, and 1% story. I'd appreciate the action so much more if there was only a select few scenes where the shit hit the fan.
My favorite prop from this film was the helmet the farmer was wearing with the detachable breathing hose. Of course there was no shortage of mind blowing practical props. Real props, films just can't feel anywhere near the same without them. These are all astounding. You can tell he wants to play with those guns way more and is holding himself back. We never do grow up, huh?

Re the metal-paint discussed at 11:57 - from personal experience I am almost certain its that fantastic AlClad airbrush paint, beloved of WWII plastic modellers wanting the perfect P-51, P-47 or P-38 paint finish. Magical stuff.
In the toolkit... Top "drawer" looks like a ring over a spoon... its a chalazion clamp, and its for eyelid surgery. And in the opposite top shelf there appears to be a Bishop-Harmon tissue forceps. Ad there's 3 sets of Westcott tenotomy scissors. All of which are used in eye surgery. Love to know why they chose to use those instruments. Just a fun fact.
I love Adams enthusiasm and excitement here. And I don't blame him one bit. Every one of those props were gorgeous and precise. I would absolutely LOVE to work as a prop master and builder. And I'd love even more to have Adam take me under his wing and teach me. I'd die a happy man.
2049 was indeed the greatest movie since Blade Runner and looking at these props, I am seriously jealous of Adam getting to have a play. The detail, as Adam pointed out, really sells these props and it must have been great as an actor to use them.
I want that memory fabrication input device. I don't know what I'll use it for in real life but i'm sure we can find a use for one. its just a beautiful looking device.
I know exactly what to use it for! I want one that actually controls zoom and pulls focus via bluetooth or whatever, that i can connect to my cameras! ULTIMATE FOCUS RING!!!!

This episode was so much fun to watch! I literally re-watched the movie this week to spot the props (although I already knew about one of them). I could only bit spot on (the sort of spring loaded kodachrome viewer).
Did anyone else ever noticed the odd, small vases/bottles on Mr. Cotton's desk? One is slightly pyramid-like in shape and they appear to have some paint in them? Never seen those before. Does anyone know what they are?
Trust me, they digitally and conceptually designed thousands of things too. These are the ones that are specific to main character interactions. Also, Directors work differently than others. Peter was meticulous and specific, where as Denis gives a lot of power to his designers and engineers to craft the world based on his outlines. As you can see Doug talks about how it was his decision for pretty specific and major prop designs, where as Peter is incredibly involved and perfectionist so he killed himself on those movies working on *everything*. Hence why he doesn't really direct movies like that anymore. I think it worked out obviously, but I think he realized he couldn't sustain that, as obvious by the Hobbit movies.
What you guys didn't see after this video is Doug and his team having to wrestle Adam to the ground to get that gun prop back.
That's what I was thinking. Or pan to him checking the gun cases to like 45 empty spots.
But they failed

They know! that. They were pointing out that it's merely not subtle "foreshadowing" but more a blatant description of events to come.

Doug Harlocker is incredibly well spoken and open about the process
Yes, I like Doug. :)
He is of the same camp as Baker and Winston...their work is so meticulous and well thought out. Master craftsmen and stunning artists.
Being able to clearly communicate ideas and concepts between directors and manufacturers is probably a hugely important skill in his line of work.
