    Great post, Lee! By coincidence, I just yesterday sold my beloved 7D to KEH, and got a 7D Mk II instead, which should arrive in a couple of days. I'm really looking forward to putting it through its paces.
    As other folks have commented, any camera (or any piece of equipment, for that matter) is still relevant as long as it does what you need it to do. As a professional musician, I've put up with "planned obsolescence" from the musical instrument industry for decades. Yet, my favorite synthesizer of all time, the Ensoniq TS-12, lasted me from 1992 until 2020. 28 years of steady, reliable usage, even as the instrument makers continually pushed out new gear and technology each year. Similarly, my beloved OG 300D, which I bought in 2003, still does fine work for me. Besides the 7D Mk II coming soon, my camera bag has a 20D and a 1DX Mk III, plus a variety of decent lenses. Although the industry is moving toward mirrorless, I'm quite happy with my DSLRs, and don't see a need to invest in the latest hardware, since what I have is more than enough to suit all my needs. (Full disclosure: I don't shoot video at all.)

      That's pretty much how I view things, I often compare it to the Motocross bike's i photograph (I used to ride also) in that the 2 stroke engine is so simple & has only had small refinements over the years, it still great & works really well! I can see myself getting into video a little more in the future, that's probably going to be the driving factor for a mirrorless camera, other than that I'm still happy with my DSLR's! Nice set of cameras you have btw

      @@LeeIveson Well, Lee, my Mk II just arrived this morning. I haven't had too much of a chance to do anything with it yet save for updating the firmware and setting a couple of custom features that I used on the original 7D. @@adude394I work from home and love taking my cameras out for a walk at lunch. The fresh air and disconnect from Teams and Outlook is much needed sometimes. How are you liking your Mark II? @@The_Algorithm_ You sound exactly like me! Getting the fresh air and disconnect is really important to me as well. Now, regarding the camera, I'm the furthest thing from a professional, but I love the 7D2. I usually pair it with the 24-105mm, which has become my favorite walk-around lens. AF settles in nicely, the burst rate is excellent, and all in all, it's been a really great investment. If you do talk yourself into crop-sensor to augment your kit, I'd think you'd be super-happy with the 7D2!

    Next Canon you should look for is the 6DMKII. I got one for half the price of a K1 mkii. I needed a full frame for magazine work a year ago and Pentax pricing is way too high. Still using K5II and KF as second camera on my paid shoots. The issue I find with Canon is stabilizer, Pentax you can shoot at night, Canon you need a good lens and some luck

    For a few years before the EOS R7 mirrorless release I've thought about picking up an older 7D mark 2 and a cheaper long lense for it just for the further away birds I sometimes shoot. So your thoughts on the 7D as you learn it would be interesting. I shot Pentax film cameras in High School, but when I came to DSLR my 1st camera was the 450D/Rebel XSi in 2009(still have it). Having a K3II for the USD price of the Pentax 150-450mm I could buy the Sigma 150-600mm 5-6.3 Contemporary and a used/renewed 7Dm2 and still spend a good $200 less of just the 150-450mm itself.

    Hm. Faster and more capable tracking of oncoming subjects is almost a given with the action-centred Canon, I guess. But even considering the flat light at the enduro track, those Canon files look somewhat lifeless and muddy to me. Part of the story may be that they're just warmer, and slight overexposure doesn't make things easier, but they might still be lacking a bit in dynamic range and microcontrast. I'm talking about nuances, but I remember your usual Pentax images having a consistent pop to them that is just absent here. Maybe that's just me, Lee. Definitely an interesting comparison. And to be fair, you need time to get used to a system that you haven't shot before.

    • @LeeIveson
      @LeeIveson  2 роки тому

      The tracking is defiantly on another level from the Pentax cameras I've used to shoot this kind of stuff, but I came into this expecting that so it's not really that much of a surprise. As for the files, I think the reason they look a little flat & have a greenish tint is that I stuck the 7DMKii on AWB, it did a pretty good job but defiantly leans more towards that muddy look your talking about.
      Next weeks video is going to be a good one then as I'm going to take a set of shots with the K3 & 7DMKii without showing which camera took which shot! It will be up to everyone to choose which file came from which camera. I'll be interested to see the results for that one.

    • @LeeIveson
      @LeeIveson  2 роки тому

      I think it's just that you know. I've gotten into a routine with editing the files from my Pentax gear and it doesn't work well with the files from the Canon. I'll have to spend some time playing around with the 7DMKii images to try & get them on par with my Pentax images. It's a never ending story with photography that's for sure haha! Cheers

    Great video Lee interesting comparison. I wouldn't be swayed to switch systems one way or the other there's nothing to say that you couldn't use Canon for sports and Pentax elsewhere. There's a bit more flexibility with Pentax if you want to try other genre's of photography for example I think I'm right in saying the K-3 Mk II has the internal astrotracer. However ultimately you have to do what's best for your business, if buying a second Canon body and lens is the best solution and that means scaling back or selling off your Pentax gear then do it. Thankfully photography is only a passion for me so I can ignore logic, and I do willfully 🤓

    • @LeeIveson
      @LeeIveson  2 роки тому +1

      I'm enjoying the results from the 7D 70-200 combo for sports, but it's not a replacement for my Pentax kit. I'm selling some of the lenses I just don't use enough to fund this project at the moment, I think the only other lens I would want to try from the Canon side of things is their 10-22 or the Sigma 10-20 as I have that lens for Pentax. In terms of the Canon helping me make more money I'll have to look at that over a longer time period to get a fair comparison.

      @LeeIveson  2 роки тому

      Thanks Barry. Well the thing is I personally think Pentax gets a bad rap for it's AF system, I really believe that it is capable, you just have to learn how to use it then play to its strengths. One thing I knew coming into this comparison series was that the Canon 7DMKii was designed specifically to shoot fast moving subjects so I'm not very surprised by my findings in terms of the AF speed & accuracy. But theirs plenty more to compare these cameras on than just the AF system, and we know just how good the Pentax gear is in certain areas! So it's going to be fun going forward for sure. Cheers

      @mipmipmipmipmip It's doesn't seem bad at all to be fair. The one massive plus is that the lens I use with the 7D MKii (EF 70-200 f4) has a dust seal & it's internal focusing which is great as no dust gets onto the inner elements. That's one of the main reasons I use those plastic bags with the 55-300 PLM it sucks in dust with being an external zoom.

  • @xmeda
    @xmeda 2 роки тому +2

    It is mostly about ring ultrasonic motors. Sadly Pentax/Ricoh does not have such motor even in the expensive DFA*70-200/2.8. Only those latest 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 have something like that. 55-300PLM focuses quickly, but you cannot compare such cheap consumer/tourist zoom lens with hi-end EF 70-200/4L IS USM.
    For example even rather old Sigma 70-200/2.8 HSM II has nice fast ring ultrasonic motor and you can find it with K-mount. I have two. It can do swallows in flight even on old K5 and with K3 it just snaps into focus. You can find some good one for about €600. Just avoid significantly cheaper ones, those usually have AF or centering issues or are beaten to death and people are trying to get rid of them.

    • @LeeIveson
      @LeeIveson  2 роки тому

      Its not the best comparison on paper, but the 55-300 PLM is the fastest Pentax lens I own & have ever used (in terms of AF speed). Its also the lens that I have made most of my Motocross images with (old Tamron 70-300 was the other lens) so I'm just comparing the gear that I personally own & shoot with. That Sigma 70-200 HSM ii looks nice for sure but does it have weather sealing? If not it's not worth the risk for me to use it in the conditions I shoot in.

    I own a Pentax K-3, prior to that the K-7 and the K-5. I still have a bunch of glass for it. Prior to this K-3iii (which I do not have) I got pretty fed up with the Pentax AF-C for the exact reason described, subjects coming head-on to the camera at speed. ALL my K bodies would kind of stop and let the subject run out of focus then try to catch up again. You would end up with a couple in focus but a lot OOF. I ended up just prefocusing where I knew the subject would pass and then firing a burst in that spot for action. It was frustrating. After a while I got tired of it and figured it was time to try another system. I bought a D-750 which had none of the issues with AF and the lenses were just much faster in general (motors). I’ve owned a Z-5 and now the Zf since then. The entire line of Z lenses is completely new so ALL of them are using modern fast motors and I think every single full frame lens is weather sealed. Not just the rubber seal on the back, actually through the lens sealing. The Zf autofocus is very refined and I have not found a situation it can’t handle yet. I may someday pick up a K-3iii when my K3 dies, or whatever exists after that body but for now I just use it when I feel like shooting with the OVF. It’s perfectly fine for everything other than high speed subjects. Mirrorless is now hitting 30/60 and 120 FPS in AF-C and has subject recognition for specific subjects (and eyes). The Zf also includes a 1 sec prebuffer feature so when you hit the shutter it saves the past 1 sec and onward at 30FPS. That makes capturing exact moments kind of easy. Think lightning strikes or the exact moment a bird hits the water or in this situation a bike leaved the ground or lands. I’m not sure if that will be possible for DSLR with the mirror. All that tech will trickle down and I’m sure the APS-C versions will have similar AF to the flagships in the next 3-5 years. The Nikon Z9 is on firmware version 5.0 as they’ve continuously refined it since launch, same with all the Z bodies basically, they keep refining over time.

      Thanks for making these comparison videos with the K-3iii. It’s very difficult to get any objective outlook on it. It’s either someone bashing Pentax or a die hard fan who cannot admit any fault in the camera system. I have Pentax but because I bought into Nikon for AF a while ago I’ve been reserved in buying this one as I don’t really need it at the moment. I think they have the best controls and ergo’s overall though amongst the brands and are very nice to use. Hopefully they can bring a few more modernized lenses into the market with the faster motor systems to take advantage of the updated AF system, and some quiet ones for video use as that’s becoming very important to a lot of camera users these days.

      @@kalimarus My favourite all time lens for Pentax was the DA*50-135, an absolute beauty of a lens. However the slow SDM auto focus motor was that lenses achilles! I'd love to see a PLM version if it's possible to make happen as the DA*16-50 PLM shows what's achievable & in its own right an absolutely fantastic lens too. For video purposes I've went the mirroless route.

      @@LeeIveson I own the older 16-50 and 60-250 SDM DA* lenses. I never picked up the 50-135 due to the overlap. Both great but the SDM is really slow by todays standards and the 16-50 SDM died years ago so it’s a screw focus lens now. I knew the 50-135 was a good one as well. Pentax should probably revisit a lot of these lenses and update the focus motors in them. I remember a while back when I had the K-5 and was in the beginning of the “frustration” with AF on my Pentax that I bought a original Canon 7d and a lens to try the AF out, it was better at that time but mostly it was the focus motor in the canon lens that was much better. BUT from that point on the gap was widening rapidly for AF up until the K3-iii which brought things back. But a lot of the Pentax lenses still have that focus speed issue because they’re all quite old designs or screw drive. One strange thing I’ve noticed with the new gear, my Z S primes especially is the look is very different. The Z primes are almost to “perfect” and sometimes the classic lens imperfections add a lot to an image. I bet we have hit a point where we’ll see that prioritized in lens design since sharpness is basically totally acceptable in nearly every modern lens at this point. I think the MTF chart and imperfection ratings in reviews drove the designs in that direction, as well as the demands of high megapixel lenses that will show softness in a lens much more than the lower mp count sensors of old.

    Surprisingly these lenses couldn’t track dogs and even cars satisfactory. 🤭
    They were beaten by the cheap Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS STM !
    Of course the initial AF lock of the STM lens is very slow because is resets itself after switching off the camera.
