That's a great test for music; even when the sound quality isn't particularly good you still can't stop hitting replay. How anyone can thumb this down is beyond me.
I have to admit it is wonderful to find so many die hard and knowledgeable Muses fans. It was a very lonely existence (musically speaking) living in LA in the 80's and 90's and being a fan of this brilliant band and the Pixies. It seemed that hardly anyone outside of NE or Europe followed them. It is great to see the deserved appreciation grow as the years go bye. Thank you UA-cam, Kristen, Tanya and Leslie!
Awesome. I saw these guys for $6 at First Ave in Minneapolis earlier that year -- I'd never heard much of their stuff, but I was completely hooked by the end of the show. Easily one of the best live acts I've had the good fortune to see.
The genius of Kristin & Co is simply staggering. God, I vividly recall screaming along to this song while driving around the Palouse of Idaho/Washington trying to figure out how to get through grad school. They got me through it. Thanks for posting this epic performance.
Kristin wails on Loud Guitar here, my Fav. TM song!(. which says alot , cuz i LOVES me @ 60 of 'em.) Thanks, K!!!!!!! My old band used to cover Shimmer, and I even (tried to) sang it. Hard.
I love how the song completely transforms in the final part. Love the song in its whole anyway... I was so happy when they did play it at this year's Primaverasound festival...
I have to say that black hair/eye brows really worked for her... She wasn't nearly as attractive as Tanya, but the "look" she's got in this video is pretty great. More importantly though... She's effing talented as all get out. Man I miss those days.
50FootWave has the same bassist as later Throwing Muses, Bernard Georges, but the bands have different drummers. The Muses always had founding member David Narcizo on drums, (his unique style helped define the band's sound), whereas Rob Ahlers is the 50FootWave drummer.
nobody who knows kristin has ever called her "difficult". anyway, Throwing Muses lasted 13 years. that's a long time in rock band years. kristin continues to work with members bernard georges (with her band 50footwave) and david narcizo (he did the artwork for several of her solo albums and also contributed drums).also there's been many TM reunion gigs along with the '03 reunion album. so it isn't like they REALLY broke up anyway.
This is the third fantastic performance from the John Stewart show! Man, I wish I was able to watch this show! They should have made a cd for this show. Check out, Collective Soul Goodnight Goodguy and Letters to Cleo Here and Now. All fantastic !
actually, Kristin lead all incarnations of Throwing Muses. Tanya wrote and sang lead on a dozen Muses songs, only a few of which i would classify as pop. IMO most of her Muses (and Breeders) output was fairly edgy, especially compared to her later Belly/ solo work.
@MckyMseNTarotCrds They have a new album that will be out someday, but also, 4AD is going to release a compilation and Hersh says they will tour to support that. I've read it several places and I think (can't remember for sure) she also mentioned it on Twitter.
Good point, I hope thats the case. From the couple of interviews I've seen It looks like she is a very lovely and interesting woman. The fact that she remains married with kids is a positive thing. I was just speculating. Thanks for the reply.
I know the Muses are touring in 2009....but I got no indication that Tanya will be a part of it. I've got tickets for the Philadelphia show in march and I've heard nothing of Tanya being there.
kristin never writes in a linear, spoon-feeding manner, neither lyrically or musically. i have my own take on this this song and am probably wrong, but i reckon that kristin would say that i have understood the song perfectly, regardless. that's why so many love her so.
@dragonskankin I would start w/ The Real Ramona and Hunkpapa cos they're the most accessible and they're also fantastic albums. Then check out the early stuff. University is the only post-Tanya album I like altho others may disagree.
Go Kristin! Ha ha, Kurt Cobain is in the "Top 100 guitarists" list and she's not? Bullsh*t!! See her live, she should be in the top 20. Not forgetting the rhythm section, of course.
muses had two incarnations.. Tanya leading a Pop like unit Kristin leading a more indie like unit i prefer the indie type over the pop influenced Tanya sound.
@JunkyPromise I think like a fair amount of songwriters Kristen writes about whatever she's thinking about at the time. There's a lot going on in this song. "Your tongue is on my shoulder and there's nothing on my brain." Sounds like meaningless sex or sex distracted from sex.
Too bad Kristin couldn't keep the band together. I think she probably is a difficult woman to deal with due to her bipolar disorder. Great Music though.
That's a great test for music; even when the sound quality isn't particularly good you still can't stop hitting replay. How anyone can thumb this down is beyond me.
Bradley George must be youtube's crappy interface. This shit is goood!

Gosh I miss these days. When music was on another level!!!!! Long live this era...
Great song great band. I still have all my muses CD's. I will be buried with them :-).
I was 23 then and now 38 and I still love it!
Are you still listening to the Muses at 50?
@@giantcheesegrater yes
@@Mrsemme excellent
Songs like these make life on earth worth it

What a great tune!! Can't stop listening to this. Thanks for the upload. "Don't follow me home!"
The genius of Kristin & Co is simply staggering. God, I vividly recall screaming along to this song while driving around the Palouse of Idaho/Washington trying to figure out how to get through grad school. They got me through it. Thanks for posting this epic performance.
This is one of the best songs I have ever heard.
Underrated geniuses of the 20th century for 200 Alex.
What a woman! Not only talented as Hell, but gorgeous, too!
Kristin wails on Loud Guitar here, my Fav. TM song!(. which says alot , cuz i LOVES me @ 60 of 'em.) Thanks, K!!!!!!!

Hard.

Thanks for posting this one. I love the song and its a great performance.
Was never a huge Throwing Muses fan but "Shimmer" is One. Kick. Ass. Song. Still fresh today. Completely overlooked and underrated.
Kristin is brilliant and those eyes are the most beautiful I've seen.
I have to say that black hair/eye brows really worked for her... She wasn't nearly as attractive as Tanya, but the "look" she's got in this video is pretty great.
More importantly though... She's effing talented as all get out. Man I miss those days.
This song is perfect. I saw TM in 95 supporting University
2022 and still Brilliant. TM were the highlight 4AD act for me.
narcizio on fire ,unbelievable
Keep an eye on me... I shimmer on horizons. LOVE THAT LINE.
One of the best from Rhode Island. Used to see them all the time in the early 80s up here.
Kristen and Tanya together are awsome.
Gives me chills. Plus! Jon Stewart!
Kirsten is my favourite Rock Chick. She's one talented musician.
I think people are only now seeing how important these bands have been and so they are only now becoming more popular
Love this song!!
great job on one of/prob my Fave tm song!!!!
Mighty fine rendition of a really good, but sadly overlooked song. Thanx for this, I like it a lot.
mother of god. the power of this song.
So....effing...good!
Great song, great band!
Magistral!!
I saw them on the 1995 tour

This video plays flawlessly on my old crappy computer.
she knows how to rock.
Yes! She is one of reasons 90s music didn't totally suck.
If this isn’t everything, it’s extra special close 🌟
nobody who knows kristin has ever called her "difficult". anyway, Throwing Muses lasted 13 years. that's a long time in rock band years.

check out 50 foot wave.
I love that woman!!!

I remember the tour in 95' .. The Newport .. Cols Ohio .. Ohio State
This rules.
the only way i can answer that is to point to the words, "i shimmer on horizons, a shimmer in your eye, son"
Playing fields, frank stephens...now that was an awesome skate video section B)

There's good news, mates : the Throwing Muses will reform in 2009 featuring Tanya Donelly !
Good point, I hope thats the case.
From the couple of interviews I've seen It looks like she is a very lovely and interesting woman.
The fact that she remains married with kids is a positive thing.
I was just speculating.
Thanks for the reply.
Mesmerizing performance of a classic Muses song.
Who's playing keyboard??
Long live Hersh!!!!
...and Tanya as well!
I know the Muses are touring in 2009....but I got no indication that Tanya will be a part of it. I've got tickets for the Philadelphia show in march and I've heard nothing of Tanya being there.
classic!
Smiling
I'd go with University as well.
kristin never writes in a linear, spoon-feeding manner, neither lyrically or musically. i have my own take on this this song and am probably wrong, but i reckon that kristin would say that i have understood the song perfectly, regardless. that's why so many love her so.
@Lucem2 I think the reason the Muses ever broke up was for financial reasons, not for personal ones.
Kristen Hersh is a creative tornado.
WIGGY ! ! ! ! !
Long live the WIG ! !
Amen.
Roger that.
Indeed.
Fucking woot!
@MckyMseNTarotCrds Actually Hersh is on twitter today talking about a tour in Europe. @kristinhersh
forgive me stupid asking: is this the same line-up as in 50 Foot Wave?
What you ask is unforgivable, but swap out Dave for Rob.
Whats the best Throwing Muses album for someone new to them to start with?
Real Ramona is the best, but you can't go wrong.
This here University is good, if you like water.
@Lucem2 They split for financial reasons. Nothing to do with personalities. Same lineup you see on stage in this video is about to tour again.
Tanya leading a Pop like unit
Kristin leading a more indie like unit
i prefer the indie type over the pop influenced Tanya sound.
i like kristin... music was really good then.
Kristin has more talent in one of her pinkies than all the useless pop divas presently 'on the charts' combined. Viva La Muse.
@JunkyPromise I think like a fair amount of songwriters Kristen writes about whatever she's thinking about at the time. There's a lot going on in this song. "Your tongue is on my shoulder and there's nothing on my brain." Sounds like meaningless sex or sex distracted from sex.
To me she looks like a 90s Joan Beaz
Jon Stewart!
looks like Zooey Deschanel!
+Edward Lee Holy shit, you're right!
+marked wayne Jon Stewart looks nothing like Zooey Deschanel.
What an insult. She's better looking and blows her out of the water That guitar alone.
throwing muses isn't shoegazey like lush & slowdive... i don't know what they got lumped with... maybe the breeders? they are a bit unlumpable.
Ummm...uhhh...what?!? Sorry Kristin, he didn't mean that. Maybe it's his dyslexia (Baez).
If she wasn't diagnosed as bipolar, wouldn't she just be difficult?? Don't label someone unless you have that same condition.
Too bad Kristin couldn't keep the band together.
I think she probably is a difficult woman to deal with due to her bipolar disorder.
Great Music though.
