A Visit to a Few Old French Churches from the 9th Century and On

  • I spent most of this week here in France searching out and exploring churches, priories, sanctuaries, and abbeys from the 9th to the 15th centuries, finding out about their art, their stories, their mystery. Here are a few visual notes to give an idea of what the fuss is about. Above all, I do love some peeling frescoes and goodness work to get this very look in my own art work a lot of the time. Maybe in a thousand years...

    Fascinating look at these buildings. I was delighted you panned slowly, so I was able to absorb the architecture as you narrated. Thank- you.

      Thank you so. I sometimes almost lose my nerve in taking it slow then I think that these church walk-throughs are really just for my own pleasure and anyone else who gets it. So happy that you did! Kelly

      Thank you, Susan. I actually am very careful to make these videos when they are empty as I would not dream of disturbing others in these mysterious places. There is something truly moving in the silence of the centuries. Kelly

    Our local church is 11th century and is the heart of our little town, a beautiful building. The other church nearby was a Saxon 10th century church but has had additions added especially in the 12th and 14th century. Both churches are still very much used. There are a lot like them all over the UK but there seem to be a lot in Sussex where I live. I am not particularly religious but I do love old churches, they have a peaceful aura and I marvel at how such intricate and beautiful work was managed with such basic tools.

      Hi Yvie. Okay, Sussex in now on my list in a big way (I live in Swansea). I do find that sometimes even the very old churches in the UK have been over-restored compared to the ones in the French countryside which are still covered with peeling paint that is centuries old, basically wallpapering over the mystery! Kelly

      Carol, I am actually going back to that one with my sketchbook. It was full of mystery and I just don't know when I will ever see something like it again.

      It is my real pleasure, Deb. Off to another this morning and hope it is open. So many of the really old buildings in the countryside are locked because of potential theft, which is just so sad for so many reasons but when one is open it is so special.

    Thank you for educating us about these old churches. It's a lost art, it seems, and I hope they will be able to stand for centuries more.

      Hello, Kelley. It is really what I come here for - the art and stories and history that are in these mysterious, old places is like nothing else that I know. I would sit in them for many hours and sometimes do but sometimes have to compromise with my travelling friend who doesn't get just one more whole afternoon spent in an old church. (Imagine!)

    Awesome video of the old..to say the least..churches and ruins!! I enjoyed seeing every church..the magnifcient architecture of those days..I too live in the U.S. and sadly our country does not appreciate such historical or momumental beauty..instead it gets torn down ,removed and demolished. You are so fortunate to be able to travel,see and video the OLD WORLD with all its glory. Looking forward to how you will portray some of your memories onto paper in your ART journal!!

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts  Рік тому +2

      Debbie, I am lucky woman indeed and I remember to appreciate it more and more. It is funny what you said about tearing down the old as some of these places were slated for demolition and only saved by intervention or dumb luck. I actually saw one gorgeous door portal that is now famous for its carvings and in the 1700s it was filled in with concrete by the powers-that-be as they found it "ugly". Thankfully a later generation was able to excavate it. Makes the mind reel! Kelly

    I'm not religious but I adore old churches. We don't have anything like this in Australia obviously because our history is more recent, so thanks for taking me along Kelly.

      Hi Nicola. These are not the churches of my own beliefs but they are the places of stories and art and just the feeling of the people who were here through the centuries and something of them and their beliefs seem to linger. Kelly

    Holy cow, this video was beyond amazing! I LOVED this Kelly. As I've said prior, you should have also been an architectural historian, or teaching art history classes! I just find these remnants B R E A T H T A K I N G! Living in the states as I do, just to hear you say, "This church was much more recently constructed, about the 14th century". HA! I have to laugh, as this country unfortunately, doesn't appreciate history and architecture, nearly enough. Not to mention, we're a tad newer country, at that. Kelly, I always adore your in person or illustrated history lessons. You are so full of knowledge! This made my day! Thank you, thank you.

      Hi Lynn. I do wish that I could have been an archaeologist but it wasn't in the cards and that is that, but I do feel lucky to have landed here all the same. Listen, the young woman who conducted a tour of a 11th century crypt covered with frescoes (filming was not allowed) told me that she did her masters in seven medieval dovecotes! Now THAT makes me smile - what conviction that must take in this crazy, screen-addicted world. Maybe in the next lifetime...
