국민 걸그룹 아이오아이 (I.O.I), 7인 유닛 싱글앨범 [Whatta Man]으로 컴백!
지난 5월 1st 미니앨범 [Chrysalis]로 정식 데뷔 후, 많은 이슈 속에서 무한한 사랑을 받고 있는 그룹 아이오아이 (I.O.I)가 8월 9일, 7인으로 구성된 유닛으로 싱글앨범 [Whatta Man]을 발표한다.
아이오아이 유닛 첫 번째 싱글앨범 [Whatta Man]은 음악은 물론, 퍼포먼스, 스타일까지 모든 면에서 점차 성장해가고 있는 소녀들의 모습이 엿보이는 앨범이라고 할 수 있다.
데뷔앨범 [Chrysalis]와 마찬가지로 음악 선정, 스타일, 안무 등 제작 전반에 있어 멤버 전원이 의견을 내고 참여했으며, ‘프로듀스 101’의 “BANG BANG” 안무구성에도 참여하며 뛰어난 댄스실력을 인정받은 김청하가 신곡 “Whatta Man (Good man)”의 안무구성에도 직접 참여해 아이오아이만의 스타일을 가득 담아내는 등 데뷔 때보다 더 발전된 모습을 선보이기 위해 부단한 노력을 한 멤버들의 열정이 담겨있다.
이번 아이오아이의 “Whatta Man (Good man)” 은 백인 소울 뮤지션 린다 린델 (Linda Lyndell)의 1968년 발표작인 “What A Man”을 샘플링하여 만든 곡으로, EXO의 “LOVE ME RIGHT”, 레드벨벳의 “Dumb Dumb” 등의 작곡가 라이언 전이 참여했으며, 라이언 전을 중심으로 ‘프로듀스 101’에 참여했던 해외 작곡가들이 다시 한 번 의기투합하여 만든 곡이다.
누가 봐도 멋진 남자를 유혹하는 내용을 귀엽게 표현한 신곡 “Whatta Man (Good man)”은 멤버들의 개성 있는 보컬과 중독적인 멜로디가 돋보이는 곡이다. 경쾌한 힙합 비트에 중독성 있는 후렴구가 귀에 맴도는 곡으로, 멜로디와 강렬하게 어우러지는 파워풀한 댄스 퍼포먼스가 돋보이며 지금껏 보여 왔던 앳된 소녀이미지를 탈피하고 아이오아이 역시 다양한 장르를 표현할 수 있다는 무한한 가능성을 담아내었다.

For our Korean friends who don't know, this song was made by an artist named Linda Lionel.
At the time she was very interested in Black culture but as soon as the song became popular the KKK, a notorious hate group, threatened her to never sing again. Rather than being afraid she continued to play the song. Several years later another group called salt and pepper did a cover of her song and that is the version many Americans know of. Fast forward a couple more years we now have this Korean version.

The more I think about it, the more I realised that I.O.I was treated so unfairly compared to other produce groups. I.O.I had no official fandom name, no lightstick,only 2 mini albums and most ridiculous of all, they only promoted for less than a YEAR! I.O.I deserved so much better :(

For anyone wondering, this single is an official remake from linda lyndell which was originally released in 1968. They announced it few weeks before its official release and gave credit to her. You can also easily find linda lyndell's name in the description cause her name was spelled in english. And yes, en vogue version is not the original one
And also, this mv alone used to have over 60m views (released in 2016) but the original distributor, 1thek had to take them down and stone music later redistributed it in 2018

What I liked with that temporary group is that no one was oustanding the other members, the charisma was equal and everyone has enough screentime in a whole 3:55 MV. Nowadays, it's so hard to find this kind of equal treatment and beautiful harmony in every kpop groups regarding screentime.

I.O.I. was a test group and P101 kept their contract just to play it safe. it’s been a year and it’s going to be okay. the girls have all moved passed their I.O.I. and have pursued their own careers, such as acting, going solo, or debuting in other, now popular groups. Wanna One is their second test, and they’re trying to fix everything they did wrong with I.O.I. with Wanna One to improve their company. In the short period of time, a fandom name isn’t really necessary but at least they got a lightstick :DDD
I’m proud of our Girls. it’s been one year without them, but at least they moved on and continued on with their careers :)

-Nayoung + Kyulkyung are now members of PRISTIN.
-Chungha and Somi went solo
-Chaeyeon is now a member of DIA

nah, their marketing strategy was that u have to stan them now (i.e. in the time they were still together) or never. if they were permanent nobody would rush to know them bc "there was still time, they wouldn't be going anywhere". I agree that i.o.i. should get back together from time to time, for side projects like digital singles at the very least, but no, they wouldn't be that popular if they were permanent.

@@naan000ok, so what happened was that the main vocalists (Yeonjung and Sejeong) were temporarily pulled from the group by their respective companies to promote in their own groups (WJSN and Gugudan respectively) and so they technically had no main vocalist for this comeback. Kyulkyung pretty much took up that role this comeback. Yeonjung and Sejoeng are both powerhouses though-
