www.revzilla.c...
As one of the most widely-ridden and long-tenured motorcycles on the road, the original Honda Rebel has made an indelible mark on many riders throughout the decades. From its prevalence in motorcycle training courses, to its dominance as a daily commuter, the Honda Rebel put together a career that has more than secured its place in the petrol pantheon.
All of that made the task of improving the Honda Rebel a weighty challenge. In this video review of the 2017 Honda Rebel 500 motorcycle, Spurgeon took to the LA streets to compare new with the old, and see where the latest iteration stacks up.

cheers bru. never noticed that before.
Pretty, pretty, pretttttaaaayyyyy, pretaaaaaaaaaayyyyy, pretty good
I sold my Honda 300F, because I am 73 and had a hell of a time getting my leg over the high passenger seat . Now I am looking at the 300 again with the lower seat. Thanks for these videos!
@GayFaggot 69
Dickhead has no gender, dickhead.
I have put a good amount of miles on a Vulcan 500 and I can tell you 40hp is plenty for a beginner bike and you can still have a lot of fun and go on trips and what have you. Dont let all these comments about needing bigger engines fool you.
DJ MotoVlogs what year? i had a 2004
I’m actually going back down in size from my 950 Yam Bolt to this bike for the fun and various reasons.
I have a Rebel 500ABS on its way to me, not here yet. This will be my third bike, and I will be quite happy with it. The only cruiser style, small enough, with mid-range controls. In my opinion, it will be perfect for me
You'll have to let us know how you like it! Congrats on the new motorcycle!
Will do, now if Honda would just get their asses in gear, and distribute them. They were supposed to be here before now. Our weather has been half decent in Nova Scotia, but I don't have a motorcycle to ride, very frustrating, as I sold the two bikes I had, in January.
Review?
I really think that this bike is a homerun for new riders.. not everyone likes sport bikes (as much as I hate to admit that lol!)
dafobra I love em, just me being really young, insurance is hella expensive for a sport bike, so I'm buying a rebel 250! More practical and safe!
I like the R6 for the control but at stops it sucks but imo is worth it. Triple digit speeds in a lean in race posture is the total shit.
I'm glad I have my own memories of putting 58k on a cbr250r and doing two 980 mile days and an Iron butt on it. Some of these comments would have you think a small bike explodes over 70mph, gets hurled off the road by just the gravitational influence of a passing truck, and is boring on day two.
Right? I love my small bikes, they are more fun to me. Having 100hp to the ground bored me to death. My favorite thing is pushing my little 20hp Rebel as far as it'll go! It'll still do an honest 65 which is as fast as I want to go. On the interstate I just slide behind a semi and cruise.
Exactly! I've hit 70 on my Grom and it's only 125. A 300 or 500 would have NO problem doing highway speeds.
I can ride a Rebel 250 (234cc) at 60-65 mph all day long creeping up to 70+mph. I can't believe the reviews where a reviewer says "yes, this 650-800cc bike can get up to highway speed." Well, no fucking shit. Are they people fucking serious. Thank God for Revilla, who makes the best motorcycle reviews. . I can't stand watching motorcycle reviews done by all the fucking retards that flood UA-cam.
landonfolken03 how did you hit 70 on a grom? Big bore?
Nope, just some nice open stretch of highway and likely some wind at our backs. I just got a Z125 last night and was limiting at 67 going down the highway too. Once I swap the sprocket to 15t I'll likely be able to hit 70. It's not that uncommon really.
I frickin LOVE this Bike and I'm a returning older rider who grew up on British Bikes and a deep love for Triumph Classics - this will be the Bike that gets me on 2 wheels again. Interesting that Spurge dismissed the Rebel 500 as soulless in one of the Highside/Lowside discussions - I think Revzilla missed a trick by getting this guy to review it - I would have much preferred either Lemmy or Joe since both might have more empathy with this type of ride ...
Didn't realize they were doing a redesign on the Rebel, it looks fantastic! Can't wait to hear a more in depth review.
How did this turn into a pissing contest in the comment section?? I'm a newbie looking for a smallish engine that i wont be an idiot with and honda is a reliable company and the rebel is a decent entry level bike im looking at. Throwing suggestions is great! but it isn't a requirement to be a complete tool in order to suggest something else. A few jokes and ball busting is expected but you guys seem to relate bike engine size with dick size or something its hilarious.
Timeless Eight my first bike was a Honda shadow 750 and the throttle was fairly stiff so it wasn’t too difficult to keep it under control. Just my two cents if you want an easy enough bike to start but don’t want to get too bored after a while the 500-800 class bikes are a safe bet. At least for cruisers I don’t have any experience on sport bikes or super sports.
Best comment iv seen this year. Cheers mate
malibu i just recently got a honda rebel 300 and its great. People love the bike and are always admiring and asking questions about it. As long as it has two wheels and an engine, youre a biker in my eyes.
People can hate, this bike is going to sell like hot cakes to female riders. I know a girl who does not like harleys and wants a light weight mechine that is fuel efficient without leaking oil. So the rebel 300 is perfect for her and I will recommend it to her asap!
Lets not forget to riding classes too. Small bikes are what we use to teach riders. Nothing better than a 250 or 300 to learn on.
I learned on a cbr125r and it's considered a beginners bike but I still ride it and love it!
smaller bikes are heckin awesome!
You can wring them like there's no tomorrow, you can always ride 'em with the engine on the edge, you can snap back the throttle and let the engine do the accelerating without the danger of landing in the ditch (smacking the throttle open on a 'busa would get you in trouble faster than you could say "stop")
It's more fun to ride a slow motorcycle fast than it is to ride a fast motorcycle slow.
My wife wants one. I told her to go with the 300 and ABS rather than a 500 w/o it. She really wants a Grom though as I have one and she loves it. She's debating now though because if she gets a Rebel she could take our son to school on it and still ride to work afterwards. The Rebel is definitely a great family of bikes.
I've been waiting to see a good video on this bike. I really want one. thanks for the review!!
Honestly! Reviews are sparse or in another language haha. I am looking to get a bike and got pretty excited for this one but no reviews as of yet.
Paul Roder the bike is awesome I have one just wrecked it today actually hope handlebars aren't too expensive LOL
Did you get one?
I just bought the 500 as my first bike! I must have watched this review 100 times Haha. Can't wait to pick it up next week!
I haven't been on a bike in about 15 years when I used to ride dirt bikes. So even with that experience, I consider myself a new rider. I just bought a new Yamaha V-Star 650 and I wish I seen these videos before I made my purchase because I really like this Rebel 500.
I had a 250 Rebel a couple of decades ago, my second bike after a Honda 125 and the first bike I could take on the freeway. All I could think of at the time was I wish it were a real cruiser like a Harley. At the same time I was having a ton of fun on it without realizing it.
I just picked up my Rebel 500 in silver yesterday (it's my first bike). I'm loving it, though it helps the weather has been absolutely perfect the past two days. I appreciate the review, really contributed to my decision.
Just bought the 2017 Rebel 300, it's been perfect so far 🤘
I've been waiting for this for so long!
Really love the look of this bike and can't wait to sit on one soon!
It's really simple to pick which one you should get: if you do more highway riding get the 500, if you do more city riding get the 300.
BEST REVIEWS OF BIKE AND MOTORCYCLE GEAR ARE FROM REVZILLA. KEEP THEM COMING
I love your reviews because big guys matter
I've been riding for 15yrs and have owned or ridden just about everything... and I want the 2020 Rebel 500 so badly.
Honda hit a home run with this, it's the best looking entry level bike I've ever seen.
I'm saving up for this bike, well actually the 500 ABS, can't wait!
Great review of the Honda Rebel 500 - thank you!
These are very nice machines, there would be a world of difference between an average sized person on these and you guys. The design is fantastic.
I think this is the perfect bike for me. I want an iron 883 or forty eight harley but feel like I need to add some experience under my belt before I hop on one of those bikes. Plus im a college student and this is alot more affordable and still looks cool imo.
Victor Jara the Harley’s are pretty cool, but I’m willing to bet off the line acceleration this will take a 883, the Rebel 500 makes more power and weighs less. Won’t beat out a 1200 though lol
Cool Fucking bike. Nice modern look. I could see this as a great starter bike. Nice platform to customize.
My first bike was a 1985 Honda Shadow 500, which I got in 2013. Would love to test ride this one and compare. The Shadow was great for back-roads, commuting, and could still hold its own on the highway.
Great review! I had a deposit on a 300 for about a month! After watching this video, I went back to the dealer and upgraded to the 500!
I'm more of a Lem Lem sized dude haha!
Congrats on the new bike man! I can't wait to hear how you like it!
How do you like the Honda so far? I am about to learn to ride and this looks interesting. I'm 6'3" and 240 if you think that might matter for me.
waiting 4 this in India......... still no comments from Honda India........ still waiting..... btw u really know how to review...
unbelievable quality. as always.
totally not interested in this bike but I'll watch this as always.
Honda stands for quality. Honest words. These bikes like ideal cruising by the beach.
5:43 I see the Maze Bank tower in the background.
Lot of comments here about how beginners would be fine having more than 500cc to start with. Sure. That may be true for some. Others might not be comfortable with that kind of power or the weight that comes with it. Smaller bikes also have a mpg and price advantage. If someone wants to get around town on as little money as possible they'll buy an old 250 and ride for days on $10 in gas.
Jon Findlay Daily Rebel 250 rider here, I pay at most about $45 a month for gas, and that’s me being adventurous.
It’s about $2.50 per fill up every third day since I do 40 miles round trip for work.
I bought the bike for $1,000 and just keep on chugging along, insurance was less than $200 for the whole year.
I love my Rebel 500! Awesome bike!
Do you still have the bike?
I'll be getting my first bike soon, I am set on a cruiser and honestly I'm digging this bike a lot. However 6k for a bike I won't ride everyday is a bit much. You have to at taxes, dealer fees and if you're financing. It adds up quickly. That's why the 300 looks more appealing monetarily speaking
found my cruiser! was considering the bolt, but I'd rather go for this.
yea you guys did that ...more lol more...Im proud to have a rebel and its age and in the right hands the history proves everything
I own a 2006 zx10r and can say that I would probably have more fun on the 500 rebel than the zx10. Much more comfortable and usable as a daily rider and around curves.
I've been torn between tweaking/bobbing either a Yammy Bolt or a Harley Street 500 for an in-town lightweight scoot/pub-hopper when I'm not in the mood for any of my heavyweights, but I'm a Honda and Triumph guy. This might just be my thing, and it looks like it's ready to bolt on forward controls with no major hassle.
I love the design of the new rebel line. I feel like it sort of copied the style of the Kawasaki Vulcan s, which I also really like. not like a carbon copy, just the new sort of style of cruiser.
You guys should REALLY get ahold of a Rebel 450 to do a comparo video similar to the one you did for the 300/250.
Can it cruise at like 70 on the highway comfortably? And could u carry a passenger on it easily (if u add a pillion)?
Rose 4ever I can't speak for the 500 rebel. But I had a Honda cb500F. And it would start to string out at 70mph. It could go over 100 but you were pushing it.
That to say, it wasn't a great cruising bike
pushing it down a hill maybe
Maybe chained to a Corvette? lol :D
Chopper Tom I topped it out at 114mph. Weighing in at about 160lbs 5'10
Liking this more than the bolt. I recently went Guzzi and finally get the cruiser thing 4 suuuure!
I didn't sit on a Bike for 15 years. Looking into retirement I thought now is the time for a Bike again pulling behind an RV. So I am 5'6 bought me an old 250 just to get back into it. Now getting a little more serious about it and wanted a bike that lasts (may be the last one that I buy).
I tried on the Harley Davidson Street 500 and the Honda Rebell 500. I drove both on a weekend and about 300 miles each. The price point of the Honda is 1000 Points better than the HD. Driving both the HD 500 and the Honda 500 I have to say that I'll think the Honda feels better in the city for some reason. That could be a personal preference because I thought the seat on the HD could be some inches further back. The HD, in my opinion, has a little more umpf on the high end behind 95. But I'll think (personal opinion) the tiny little more umpf behind 95 is not worth the 1000 points more out of my savings.
Waiting to book... Let's rock rebel
"Two big guys on too little bikes."
Hahahahahaa Semantics are fun.
Homophones? More like homofuns
Honda Rock Solid and Dependable. All their vehicles.
300 500 doesn't matter. The idea that you are flying and or moving at least 50 times more than humanly possible, is cool. If you can afford it, buy it. Enjoy the Ride Safe.
Looking forward to this review. Thanks!
I have 0 riding experience. But tempted to get the honda rebel 500, is it too much power for a new beginner?
When is the 300 video coming? Two big guys on little bikes...gonna be EPIC!
We're working on it! We really don't need much of a reason to put Lemmy on a tiny bike. Case in point: www.revzilla.com/common-tread/dopes-in-the-dirt-exclusive-post-race-interview -TeamZilla Chris
never had a bike before but I love the look of this thing. if anyone could help me out, I'm wondering if you could fit two people on here? what weight would you all consider the limit for this? thanks for any help
Yes, you can get an accessory passenger seat for both the 300 and 500 Rebels. We don't have the weight ratings, but the 500 is better for riding two-up. -DrewZilla
This is a significant bike in this range. kudos to Honda! great design, you don't have to look like a dork on your first bike. get the 500 skip the 300 which is for other countries.
seriously considering the 500 for my first bike.
can't wait for some more aftermarket exhausts for this bike
Im 6 foot 1 and 160lb. Could i buy this bike for commute and touring? If not, what other bike would you suggest that is similar in terms of style and size?
Control>Power.💯
Looking forward to an extended review and that time with Lemmy on and old 250! :-D
I would love to see a Rebel 500 customization video
My dad doesn’t think I should get the rebel😞 but I want it so bad...
Buying a super reliable bike from the largest motorcycle Company in the world is a no brainer.
The 300 is better for beginners ?
Hey, great stuff!
I can see that the 500 can do well on the highway, but my question is can it do well for a solid hour for my commute to work? I will usually be going between 60-90mph for an hour to and from work.
Yes, the 500 motor can go all day at highway speeds, so it's perfectly fine for an hour commute. -DrewZilla
1 watt of power for a stereo means 1 person at the top of their lungs yelling. Some people are very loud and 1 watt can be a lot. 1 horse power means the power of one live horse. Some people have been known to die on one horse. So, when you say 26 horse power isn't a lot what you are saying is being pulled by 26 living horses isn't a lot. 26 houses is a lot of power if you think of it as 26 living horses. Most people couldn't handle that kind of power. The person who came up with horsepower rating was James Watt to measure units of work.
Exactly. Especially considering the weight of a motorcycle this size being very low. Around 600 lbs with a rider on it. One horse can pull a 600 lbs carriage around easily at a decent speed. Add 49 more to that.
Plenty of power for city and light highway riding.
A human has about 5 hp and a horse has about 15 hp
Nothing about this bike will totally knock your socks off. It's pretty plain. Gets great MPG. Plenty of power for light highway work and city riding.
The big added draw has to be how easily Hondas are customized and the good aftermarket selection for them generally.
I've seen new Rebels bobbed out and they look pretty damn cool.
I heard it's a bigger pain to put forward controls on the 500 though.
as a new rider im pretty much set on getting the 500, i just wonder why honda put only one rather small disc up front with those larger tires? i would think for new riders they would have put a little more stopping power on it but maybe they were worried about new riders going into panic mode and with a softer braking experience youre less likely to lock up? idk maybe they were trying to save money or make it more affordable by now making ABS standard? thats my only concern about it, everything else seems perfect for me in my current stage
If you were a new rider ask a friend who rides for help. Buy a safe used bike at a decent price. Ride it for a season or two and resell it. The money you save can go for good safety gear and the MSF course. If you make a noob mistake you won't thrash a new bike. EBay or salvage motorcycle shops have spares.
Here in india rebel 500 is sold at twice the price of 300...that is 450k rupee for 500 and 230k rupee for 300...do you think the difference in performance justify that or should I just go with the 300??
Thinking of getting this or the HD Street 500. Thoughts?
Both are good options. The Rebel 500 makes about the same power as the Street 500, but it's also about 80 pounds lighter than the Street, so the Rebel might be easier to handle. -DrewZilla
Cool! time to test ride both then!
Should i travel using the 500? If im not using the highway. Or would the highway be better?
You can use the 500 both on the highway and on back roads. It's really versatile. -DrewZilla
I think the new rebels look sick
Nice man goooood review
You talk about how taller riders should be aware that the bike is a little cramped. I'm 6'5 and looking to get a motorcycle. Could you all do a video on bikes good for taller riders? Thanks
In general, dual sports are tall and good for taller riders. If you like this cruiser style, Spurgeon in the video is 6'3", and he still fits ok on the Rebel. -DrewZilla
At 0:32 he mentions having procured a 250 and a 300 for comparison. Where can I find this review? Thanks.
We're working on it, so it should be out soon. Stay tuned! -DrewZilla
My friend and I want to go cross country, he's a bit more of a gear-head than I am, but I don't know much about motorcycles, however, I'm willing to learn of course so that I could fix whatever bike I finally decide on. Which Honda Rebel would be best for cross country, the Rebel 500 or the Rebel 300?
Probably the 500. -DrewZilla
How does the Rebel 500 compare to the Kawasaki Vulcan 650? I'm not sure which one to get.
The Vulcan 650 is slightly bigger and has more power. For a first time rider, it's generally better to go with the smaller bike. -DrewZilla
Dang, Dude! Tell Tony he needs to give you a raise so you can buy a second t-shirt. You've been wearing that same shirt in every video I've see you in! LOL
my gf just boight a 1200 nightser..about the same dimensions as a rebal..but its a 1200..70 hp 2008 hd nightster 6500$ with 5000 miles she got a great deal
Honda needs to bring this to Brazil
im sorta a newbie with bikes, like 48hp for this bike is it enough power to move it in a punchy way? or is it gonna feel lack of power??
The 500 has some decent pep to it. If it's your first bike, you won't feel a lack of power. -DrewZilla
Tbh I'll go for the 500 because of my hight and weight as a beginner.
i like the look.so clean.
Make a mod series with this bike like you did with the Harley iron 833
For my first bike is a rebel 500 with abs too much power or is it better to get the 500 and grow into it
If you weigh more than 200 pounds, go with the 500. If you weigh less than 200 pounds, consider the Rebel 300. -DrewZilla
I was never a fan of those early Rebel 250's. They looked like they wanted to be a tiny Harley. This new version seems pretty nice. Totally different styling. Not sure why they called it a Rebel.
Hi i am 6'5 160 looking for starter bike i heard you say that the bike is cramped for you at 6'3 cant i adjust pegs or seat to make it more comfy?
You can't really adjust the pegs, but you might be able to get a taller seat. -DrewZilla
RevZilla thanks for the info i realize being tall sucks for learning cuz no matter what ill always be stuck riding something big but i want to upgrade to an iron 883 with abs after i break in a smaller bike & lower my insurance rates
So how does this and the Harley Street 500 compare?
The Rebel 500 is 80 pounds lighter, has slightly better fuel economy, and is a lot more affordable, especially if choosing ABS. Seat heights are about the same at around 27 inches. -DrewZilla
What kind of top speeds are you seeing on the Rebel 300 vs the 500?
I was able to get the 300 into the low 80's and while I didn't max out the 500 I saw the 90's flashing on my screen for a moment before I slowed for traffic. The 500 will get you up to speed a little quicker as well.
Ok awesome! I'm probably gonna pick up the 300 cause I'm not experienced at all lol. Just wanted to know cause this "review" didn't mention much of that. I don't need to go over 80 anyways for my use.
@@SpurgeonDunbar 100 MPH or more for the 500.
Which color can you have in USA? I'm from France and we only can have black, grey and red
In addition to those three colors, we also get the Bright Yellow seen in this video. -DrewZilla
what gear do you wear? I really like the style
All the gear is linked in the video description. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla
I just got my license, I am looking for a bike. Is this bike is counts a cruiser or a sport bike? I'm a beginner rider
It has cruiser ergonomics but is still a bit sporty in nature. It's a good beginner/intermediate option. -DrewZilla
I weigh 240 lbs. will a rebel 300 or 500 be a good start?
The 500 would probably be better for you. -DrewZilla
@@RevZilla thank you.
You're welcome!
One Question, how did you chin mounted your GoPro Mate ?
Spurgeon just used a standard GoPro Side mount but mounted it on the chin using regular GoPro hinges. -DrewZilla
My grandpa just bought one and said he wants me to have it. Ive never ridden a bike what should i doooo
U personally have put a lot of miles on a old 1985 rebel 250 that I paid 500 for 1200 miles from Colorado to CAlifornia
is this a cafe cruiser? just curious on the classification
Honda sees it more as a "standard" to be honest. I think a lot of people will classify it as a cruiser due to the Rebel's history and its low seat height, but the actual body position is much more standard than before.
What do you think guys , which is better , the Honda rebel 500 , the Bmw G 310 GS or the Honda CB500F for a beginner who's 6 feet 3?
The BMW is probably best, as it has a taller seat height and more room from the seat to the foot pegs. That means your legs won't be as bent or cramped. -DrewZilla
RevZilla I very much thank you
Power seems disappointing. My 1984 VT500FT has 50 hp and was designed 35 years ago. I would love this bike around 300lbs and 60+ horse power.
For begginers, would yo recommend this (or Rebel300), or the ktm duke 390?
Honestly, all three are good beginner options. -DrewZilla
