God you guys are stupid. They are suspending players bc all pga tour pros are members of the pga and they all sign rules and regulation’s. Just like pros that play on the European tour and other events.. They all get releases from the pga signed to play on the other tours. If they don’t get approved and play. They get in trouble. Same thing with LIV. And those who went. Went for one reason. Money. The pga has declined any waivers from the start and people playing in the league. So they all knew what was coming. The pga has made it clear what will happen. And I’m glad they are doing it. LIV is rookies golf with no true competition to be the best. All who went threw their pga legacy away

For players that are struggling to make TOP 50, why not allow all of them to join another league to get their confidence back along with some monetary gains. Money up front with a prize to be won vs earning your entirety as a prize is no different. You should still tell your kids to get their heads out their asses and work hard to make something of themselves because we sure as shit ain't getting $150m to play in the events. You have to be good to be paid and they paid their dues and got great before collecting that pay cheque. LIV is still early so you won't see every top name jumping ship for the first ever event. It will develop as will the future players and you will see the great competition on both sides. Every sports league has expansion teams and you cannot argue that it muddies the waters. Those athletes compete just as well as everyone else because there is such a miniscule difference between the best on the leaderboard vs the last. Especially in golf, I haven't seen one person as dominant as Tiger since his fall and that was a many years ago. One golfer will take the prize in one event and then place 10th at the next one a weekend after. Working hard and being a good person shouldn't be a hard thing to do outside the game, but, you got bigger problems if it is for you.

What if Vladimir Putin had a tournament, would you legitimize his regime by playing there and cashing in millions of dollars? The real question is about decency - are you a moral person or not? Should golfers be held to higher ethical standards than footballers or F1 drivers? My answer is a resounding YES!!! The founding fathers of golf were all gentlemen who played with great honour and a sense of responsibility because they were role models for society. Think of Jack and Arnold who established the PGA. I don’t see a valid reason, beyond a obsession with control and maintaining a status quo, that the PGA should choose to bar the LIV Golf players from their tour. The Tour hosts a tournament just about every weekend of the year since they went to that wraparound season. It's not like football or basketball where there is a well defined off-season. I respectfully disagree with Brandel Chamblee. First of all, I looked at the leader board of the Canadian Open and there were about 75 names that I've never heard of. And beyond the major championships what do I care if a no name golfer wins the Valero Open? I've never heard of most of these people. Until this year I'd never heard of Scottie Scheffler and he's the number one ranked player in the world. And he's winning everything out there, but unless he continues to play like he has, well, he's just the flavor of the month. Chamblee also forgets that these players are professional golfers. That means that playing golf is their occupation. They play for a pay check. Half of these players each and every week don't make a dime. If they don't make the cut there is no pay. In fact, the top players on the PGA Tour make far less than the top players in other professional sports such as baseball and football. If reports are correct and Dustin Johnson was paid over 100 million to walk in the door, that's more than he's made in his entire PGA Tour career and not long ago he was ranked number 1.
Yes, this is a big threat to the PGA Tour. If LIV can peel off four or five more well known players and can find a TV deal then I'm watching. And here's another thing: Why the hell are these pundits continuing to pontificate about human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia? Do they really believe that anyone gives a flying fuck about what's going on in Saudi Arabia or Yemen?
I think the biggest mistake the PGA Tour made was by essentially firing these guys for playing in LIV Golf. That wasn't wise. The PGA Tour needs these guys. They need the names that we recognize because if not enough of them are playing then no one will watch anything other than the majors.
Look, this really presents a real danger to the PGA Tour. It really is all about the money. We've seen the first wave of players that have defected. There are more coming.

You got to ask yourself if the money was right, is there anywhere you wouldn't play? Would you have played in apartheid South Africa sponsored by the government for example? What if Vladimir Putin had a tournament, would you legitimize his regime by playing there and cashing in millions of dollars? The real question is about decency - are you a moral person or not? Should golfers be held to higher ethical standards than footballers or F1 drivers? My answer is a resounding YES!!! The founding fathers of golf were all gentlemen who played with great honour and a sense of responsibility because they were role models for society. Think of Jack and Arnold who established the PGA. It’s not all about money you know it’s also about history and legacy and being decent citizens of the world.

      @johngarnergarner6724 2 роки тому

@@humfreycollins2422 you bring up some very fair and salient points. I can't argue against what you are saying. Each of these players will have to make their own decisions. But let me point out a couple things. These golfers are not politicians. They are not human rights activists. They play golf, so I doubt that most of them particularly care about what's going on in Saudi Arabia. Maybe they should, but I'd bet that most of them have little awareness about what's going on there.
I don't know if you're English or American. My guess would be English. In the US the most powerful sports league is the NFL. Over the years there have been several noted attempts to create rival leagues to the NFL. All of them have failed within a year or two of their inception. And they failed because they didn't have the money to compete. None of the top NFL stars defected to rival leagues simply because they could earn only a fraction of what they could in the top professional sports league.
I believe the LIV golf series is a major threat to the PGA Tour. They have the money and they have time for their tour to take root. They have already removed 17 members from the PGA Tour. And there will be more defections to come. This new tour is just too lucrative for these golfers to ignore. Phil Mickelson was paid 200 million dollars to walk in the door, That's more than he earned in prize money during his entire career. Same for Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and others. Your comments were certainly fair and your points are well made. I would also say that there are other issues involved too. I think it's quite clear that Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman have issues with the PGA Tour. I think that's clear. There's something there. What that might be, well, I couldn't speculate. So, while money and plain old fashioned greed are probably at the heart of the matter, I'm sure there are other factors. This will play out over time but at the end of the day I think the PGA Tour will be greatly diminished.

The notable exception was Major League Soccer which was different because there was no other league in this country. Obviously, it's clear that an upstart league like the USFL can't lure away players like Tom Brady or Christian McCaffrey. They don't have the money. But LIV Golf does have the cash. So happy to see LIV and the drama happening. Who knows what will happen in the years to come. I suspect that LIV will peel off some PGA talent in the coming years as LIV grows and develops. You will always have your traditionalists and loyal fans. As new generations come into golf, that will be the telltale sign of what happens.
If the human rights thing was such a problem, America should have found their oil elsewhere after all these decades. Lord knows that we have enough in the country. I just think the human rights thing is being used in a pawn of this game of chess. Golf is golf. Nothing more, nothing less. The PGA allows golfers from some of our political enemies and not-so-friendly nations to play. The PGA was one of the last to accept ethnic minorities to play. So, the PGA has dirty hands too throughout their history. Not to mention, if look at the politics and social agendas of some of their sponsors and even members in their leadership, I bet you could find many faults. I can almost guarantee that much of the products they support are not all "Made in the USA".
Let the media and the activists have their day. In time, we will see how this works itself out. One day, there will be new leadership in the PGA and perhaps they will have a different view of things. Everyone talks about money. The PGA, the players, the sponsors, and all involved in the organization are knee deep in the money. The PGA is a business. It is not a charity.

i am an IndyCar fan, and I lived through most of our Split, and here are my takeaways from it that Golf needs to listen to or else the same fate will happen.
    1. Fans will pick a side, and then they will become apathetic as the sides change drastically.
    2. If The New Organization gets a Major Tournament from the Old one, the new group earns the leverage.
    3. One tour will have the better golfers, but the other will have closer competition.
    4. Sponsors will decide who wins, because No sponsor wants to support two rival organizations.
    5. In the end, nobody wins, ratings will decline, and fans will find something else to do. The majors will be fine, but smaller events will be in trouble.
Buckle Up, and be respectful to the other side you disagree with, because if this split resolves within 5 years, most of the damage can be avoided. If not, It will be bad.
Sending my best wishes to every person in the industry, from a fan of IndyCar

Good stuff. BTW...I don't blame the players who "jumped ship". Follow the $. It isn't complicated...they were lured by the prospects of huge $ and made their choice. Their interviews are filled with "its good for the game of golf etc"....whether true or not, I would respect them more if they would be more open that it is about the $. This is no different than businesses poaching talented executives. These players all got a "raise" and arguably better working conditions to "play". The difference is there are rules that all players on the PGA agreed to when the enrolled; again similar to non competition clauses business executives sign. Often those competition clauses if they go too far are struck by courts. Let's see what the courts have to say about the contractual terms of golfers and their PGA association. All good.

The issue is clear. Those in power at the PGA have a vested interested in maintaining their monopoly on professional golf. Furthermore, these professional golfers in the words of Brandel are 'independent contractors'. As such, they get to pick when and where they play and how much. Those in power on the PGA Tour want to restrain those who would like to consider other opportunities to play. I wonder if Brandel considers that perhaps these players of which he speaks are using the LIV Tour as well for their personal benefits? Several of them have made it clear this is a means to and ends and will give them capitol for the next phase in their lives. Yes, the PGA Tour does have the best retirement and pension plan in all professional sport, this is well documented. However, this does not negate these players from forgoing some of those benefits and considering other options to explore in their professional careers.

LIV golf wouldn’t have been as appealing of a transition if the PGA gave its players the freedom to be more selective with their participation. • @Steve-vy6nl

Brandel always fashions himself as the smartest guy in the room. The high earners in the PGA tour are a relative handful, that means course income plus endorsements. He names Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods, etc. They are the exceptions to the general rule. The big endorsement income is very narrowly allocated. The average PGA tour pro, one of the best players in the world who made his way to the premier tour in the game, last year GROSSED $1,485,000. That’s before caddies, travel and all related expenses. That means he netted well less than $1,000,000. Add in what the AVERAGE guy gets in endorsements which ain’t much, e.g., 50,000 for a hat and bag logo, and maybe another 100,000-200,000 in outings, etc. means that a guy who is probably in the best 150 players in the world makes a million or so a year, less than a journeyman reliever in pro baseball. All of the endorsement wealth in pro golf that puts golfers up there with guys in other sports is spread among about 10-15 guys on the PGA tour. The other 125 or so are earning only “decent” money for a relatively short career, largely over at 40. And if taking Saudi money is shameful, what about the NBA and China, which is a treasure trove for players and the league?
