Franz Liebkind was played by the great and wonderful Kenneth Mars, whom you know as Inspector Kemp from "Young Frankenstein". Always an asset! Andreas Voutsinas as Carmen Ghia. Also a Brooks semi-regular, you can see him again in "History of the World Part I" and in a very dark comedy, "The Twelve Chairs". Zero Mostel was Max, a titan of Broadway at that time, he originated the role of Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof", and was Pseudolus on Broadway in "A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to the Forum". He and Wilder were together in the filming of Ionesco's "Rhinoceros". Brooks was so VERY fortunate to snag him for a role like Max, which would not have gone over so huge and weirdly sympathetic in other hands. This was my introduction to Brooks, when it was shown, full of commercials, on broadcast tv. Our mom, who, like me, loved to write plays, loved to quote Franz: "You shut up. I am the playwright. You are the audience. I OUTRANK you."
Zero Mostel as in another comedy in 1965 called"A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum." A farce set During the Roman Empire co starring Phil Silvers, Buster Keaton and Jack Gilford witn combined British and American Cast.
Mel Brooks won an Oscar for the original screen play - and in his acceptance speech he said 'and I'd also like to thank Gene Wilder - I'd also like to thank Gene Wilder - and I'd also like to thank Gene Wilder.' One of my favorite movies. Thanks for the nice reaction.
Amazing concept for a movie!! From Hollywood movie to Broadway Musical to Hollywood musical movie, ALL SUCCESSFUL!! Not many can boast of that! And Carmen Ghia!! Best-fitting movie name EVER!!
They actually made a play. It was quite successful. Won a ton of Tony awards. And then they made a movie musical that is like the play but on film. There's an OBC Chicago tryouts video if you want to watch the play somewhere on this platform. I dunno what streaming service has the musical movie.
I've seen both movie versions, plus a live touring company. And that was a total love fest : we were all basically speaking the lines along with the cast. A great night; I still have my ticket stub.
Dick Shawn is absolute genius as Hitler. An extraordinarily funny comedian, he actually died on stage while doing a performance and the audience thought it was part of a gag! It was a few minutes before a stagehand approached him and discovered that he had actually passed away.

Dustin Hoffman was originally supposed to play the part of Franz Lipkin, but he was offered the role of Benjamin in The Graduate, so he got ,Mel Brooks to release him from his contract and Lipkin was played by Kennith Mars.
The recent remake is more entertaining to watch when you have seen the first. I recommend having a look at it, but it probably doesn't merit another reaction video. It's not bad, and the casting and visual appeal is pretty good, but it wasn't better than the original, despite having a bigger budget.
The chemistry between Mostel and Wilder is off the charts.

You should watch the 2005 musical version of this movie. It's way better and the music is amazing
