  • Hilbert Margol and his twin brother, Howard, served in the 42nd “Rainbow” Division out of Oklahoma during World War II; both served as gunners with 105MM gun batteries. They would be shipped to Europe in early 1945, serving in the Alsace, Ardennes and Rhineland campaigns. Both brothers witnessed the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp, and both served with the Army of Occupation in Austria just after the war ended.

The comments at the end hit me hard😢. My father not only said the same thing. Seconds after my draft lottery was drawn, my birthday was drawn number 8 by the governor, and my parents became uncontrollable. Both of them were veterans in the Aluetians and Pacific.

Thank you for the interview. My parents wouldn't talk about what happened. I remember my older brother asking, my dad glaring at him and my mother angily telling my brother and i never to bring up the subject again. At my dad's funeral, one of tthe US Marines Color Guards said my dad was a puller man?
