- Hall of Famer Ray Guy is the greatest punter in the history of the NFL, and as a member of the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders, he played an instrumental part in the team's success throughout the 1970s and the 1980s. However, he was so good that in 1977, the Los Angeles Rams tried to do something that seems almost unthinkable, purely because of how good Ray Guy was. This is the story behind one of the craziest moments in the illustrious career of Ray Guy, even if he technically had nothing to do with it

Watch the 1980 AFC wildcard game Raiders vs. Oilers. It was Guy's greatest day as a punter. 9 punts 51.1 avg, longest of 66. Some of those punts were shorter placement ones that knocked that overall average down a few yards. Anything where he was from the Raiders 35-yard line or back he just crushed. Charlie Jones who called the game (and many a Raider game and Ray Guy punt before) was dumbfounded. Every kick you heard 55K people shouting "OHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

Lol, no he wasn't. Sports illustrated went over every single punt he ever made. He was the penultimate 'middle of the endzone punter.' And wasn't even punter in the Bay Area for his career.
BC Lions had a player similar to him, Lui Passaglia drafted in first round, played for 24 years, he was a kicker, punter and occasionally a receiver. A remarkable player.
He was also a substitute teacher during the off season.
I barely followed the CFL (it would be on ESPN a lot in the 80s) and I definitely remember Lui Passaglia clearly.
Ray at Southern Miss was the best punter, a great cornerback, a great pitcher who they tried drafting I think 3 times if I remember correctly. He was an all around athlete.
That punt at 10:41 ... Almost over his head and he still buried it in the corner. Man, he was great.
On a side note, the great Dave Butz passed away the other day as well. He was 72.
As a giants fan who watched Jeff feagles tactically punt us to the Superbowl in 2012, I can say that punters can be a massive tool on a great team
With Ray Guy's induction to the Hall of Fame, it finally has a *complete* team.
Holy crap! He had some great punts. How many times did we see him place one in coffin corner. Also, he seemed to be an accomplished runner and passer. Only player I saw that was any was close to him was Rohn Stark.
Sean Landetta was with him in accuracy but no one matched his power.
RIP Ray Guy. This is a heck of a tribute. Funny and sad and half-unbelievable.

It’s defensible to say one can’t tell the story of the NFL without mentioning Ray Guy. I can’t think of any other punting specialist about whom you could say that.
As a pure punter, Reed guy was the best punter of all time. A people that only punted. But if you go back and look at NFL history, Sammy Baugh who also was the greatest quarterback in the NFL until 1950 led the league in putting five times and in one year averaged over 50 yards per kick. Maybe back then the ball was easier to kick because it wasn’t as aerodynamic as it is now which makes it easier to pass the ball.
So was Ray Guy the best punter that only punted the answer would be yes. But if you look at all the people in the NFL from the very beginning who punted, while also playing another position because rosters were smaller back in the day maybe not.
There really is no question, Ray Guy was the greatest punter ever, no one even comes close... RIP to the king of the coffin corner punt
What a great story! The Rams should have known the story was B.S. Ray is from Georgia although he went to college at Southern Miss. This is coming from someone who is actually related to him and also punted for the same high school. It is great to see that he is much a hero around the country as he is here in Thomson, GA. He will always be the best there ever was.

I am in COMPLETE and TOTAL Agreement with you that Ray Guy was the GREATEST Puter in NFL History. In addition to being the Raiders Punter, he was also their 3rd string QB, and on several occasions threw 60 yard passes on Fake Punts, like in a final second of a game againt the Seahawks. I also personally remember a game in 1984 where a Washington NFL football player actually blocked a Ray Guy put with his face mask....the Washington NFL player was knocked out cold by the punted ball and the ball still traveled about 25 yards down field.
I remember as a kid playing street football and actually looking forward to punting & trying to imitate Guy.He is the best and only punter anyone would consider and want to be like and want to have on their team.R.I.P.

I knew I wouldn't be a QB or RB so punters were natural for me to imitate or try to. For me it was Reggie Roby as I got to see him play in person when he was in college. One of the first games I ever saw.
I don't know what went on financially with him, but I feel sorry for someone who has to sell his Superbowl rings. True story.
all 3 of them, and for over $90,000. A lot of debt. I'm not sure what led up to it, but being "just a punter" in the 70's was probably only around $30,000/year. Most players like that had to go on and get a "regular" job after football. Unfortunately, there have been a lot of players from way back when who have sold their rings because of financial trouble

R.I.P. to the father of Hang Time. Ray was a great athlete. Numerous MLB teams wanted to draft him. He kicked a 61 yard field goal during a snowstorm in Utah, which at the time was a NCAA record. His 8 interceptions for Southern Mississippi in 1972 is still a SMU record. Also, kicked a 93 yard punt for SMU in 1972. Madden said that every single Coach on the Raiders staff told him that they should take Guy with their first round draft pick. Madden said that's the only time that ever happened during his tenure with the Raiders. I watched Ray and virtually in every game he played, he would flip the field at least once. Also, he was often the Raiders emergency quarterback. Ray could stand flat footed on the 20 yard line and throw the ball through the goal post 80 yards away. There's only one Ray Guy, and he's still the greatest punter to ever play the game. Take care and Peace y'all!

Back in 1990s we had Ray Guy come to our lumber yard as a "Celebrity Rep" for Hoover fire treated lumber. He was a real neat low key guy. Until one of my truck drivers showed up . He was a hard core Raiders fan and ran in yelling where is he !! Stops see Ray, Ray hi I Ray Guy and sticks out his hand. Steve the driver tears in his eyes walks up to Ray drops to his knees and kisses Ray right toe. To his credit was incredibly cool though clearly shocked. Talk about fan worship.

I'm glad I'm old enough to have watched him play. And as far as the old "helium" argument, that just adds to the Raiders mystique of that era.

John Madden about Guy: He is a football player who happens to be able to kick the ball. In other words, Guy was much more than a punter---a real compliment by John
RIP the GOAT of punting, as for others who should be in the HOF special teams is 1/3 of the game, and kickers/punters/gunners/returners should be represented more ie Vinatieri, Lechler, Slater/Tasker and Hester for starters at each
I remember when Guy's punt was blocked in Super Bowl XI...one of the very few times his punts ever got blocked. Vikes couldn't take advantage as McClanahan fumbled (the famous play where Phil Villapiano said before the play "we got em right where we want them") and the Raiders won their first Super Bowl. Irony-Guy was born the same exact day (12/22/49) as twin brothers Robin and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees.

The blocked punt in Super Bowl XI was the first time he had a punt blocked as a pro, the first punt that he had blocked in a regular season game didn't happen until 1978, his 6th year in the NFL, he had 3 of his punts blocked in regular season games during his HOF career.
I was in utter shock as well. As an Oakland Raiders fan as a kid, I considered his punts unblockable. But once Brent McClanahan fumbled, my confidence in the natural order of the universe was restored, and the ensuing smackdown of the Vikes was glorious and inevitable, because that's how Minnesota rolled in Super Bowls. I spent many an hour in my backyard dreaming of being Ray Guy, as rural living made for a lonely existence, and you didn't need someone to play with in order to punt.
I remember those kicks almost as much as Cunningham's 91 yarder. ( Eagles fan here) I remember him pinning the Eagles deep, and watching them gas out trying to go against the defense.
Shame he died on my birthday.

He is best punter my opinion in NFL history. Guy was weapon also very good QB, overall athlete. I remember he hit gondola in super dome in New Orleans during a pro bowl. Huge part of the tremendous success Raiders had between 1973 thru 83. Lord sends us players like that very rarely. Ray Guy one those never b another Ray Guy. Loved documentary about his life on SEC network. I did not know he was from raised in Georgia. Would someone who reads this please tell me how he died. Never heard anything about him being sick. He seemed b really great teammate and person. Never forget him.
My grandfather told me about him and how they played football together in Thomson where I live. He said he was their greatest punter and one I think 3 state championships I can’t remember. I wish I would have met him.

This goes squarely in the "absolutely absurd if true" category. The part where he called "his cousin Ray" makes it seem legitimately made up.
If not for Guy, there'd be no Se Bas.
I am in complete and utter shock to find out Ray died a year ago. I had no idea. Sad & depression that so many of the Raiders from those 70s team have passed away.
It also when the Nfl was changing from straight on kicker to “soccer” style field goal.
Probably the craziest thing about Ray Guy was that when he was drafted by the Raiders in the first round he had a broken foot. Who today would give up a first round pick for a punter with a broken foot? Probably not many teams would risk it but the Raiders back then took chances on many players at different positions not because they wanted to be right but because they felt that it was the best thing to do as an organization.
It would be funny to find somebody who conned their way into the NFL - and was actually rather good!

I like to think that this was just a giant scheme to get a free pair of shoes.
I remember that Bum Phillips was convinced that the Raiders were putting helium in the ball so Phillips had his punt returner fair catch the ball and bring it to the sideline where they took it to their lockerroom and then had the air in it tested. It contained no helium.
The only season where the real Guy did not have a 60-yard punt was the strike-shortened 1982 season when his longest was still over 50.

Some of the comments are simply really bad takes. Anyone that watched the NFL back in Guy's era knows what's what. The recency bias here is just weak. Guy's coffin corner kicks have never been done with nearly the same consistency in which he delivered them. The HOFs often get things wrong but in this instance, they got things very right. Guy was a weapon.
Well at least the Rams gave the man a chance......you never know unless you ask/try.
You should do a story about Raphael (i think it was him) and the time he got pulled over on his way to training camp. The story goes that he spoke very little english so from the officers perspective youve got a fat mexican (so maybe it wasnt raphael) who doesnt speak english claiming he is the kicker for the Dallas Cowboys

I knew he was a big name, but not so big of a name that someone tried to pull that kind of stunt. Thank goodness the Rams didn't waste too much time on "his cousin" before signing someone who could kick on placements (PATs and FGs).

It’s really fascinating that the 2 best Kickers (Jan Stenerud & Nick Lowery) and the 2 best Punters (Ray Guy & Shane Lechler) in NFL history played for the same team for essentially their entire careers (K Chiefs & P Raiders.)

You can debate that Jerrel Wilson is at least in the conversation for greatest punter ever, im not saying that he is better then Ray Guy, but it can be said he was hands down the greatest punter before Ray Guy. Its just too bad that Wilson is largely forgotten today except by Chiefs fans.
I remember Jerrel Wilson. And you’re right. Before Guy was drafted, he was the best punter in the AFL/AFC.

The most stupid thing about this video is that it's creator thinks that a kickers height affects his likelihood of having his kicks blocked.
I don’t agree with his comments about height making a difference. That was just the words coming directly out of Septien’s mouth and what he and the coaching staff thought was a problem

Ray Guy: 27th in games played, 22nd in # of punts, 22nd in total yards, 32nd in punting average, 8th in TBs, 42nd inside the 20, 22nd in net ave....how does this make him THE greatest punter?
You obviously NEVER saw the man play, his punts drastically affected opposing team's field position and his coffin corner kicks were legendary and you NEVER heard announcers and observers use the term "hang time" before Ray Guy and you also NEVER saw an onscreen graphic of a clock measuring the amount of time a football was airborne immediately after it was kicked before Ray Guy came along, Averages aren't the set in stone criteria for HOF induction but narrowminded people who NEVER SAW HIM PLAY at the peak of his career have NO CLUE!

He was a three-year starter at defensive back at Southern Miss. He kicked a 47-yard field goal as a sophomore to help USM beat Ole Miss and Archie Manning in Oxford to ruin the Rebels' homecoming.
Except he isn't..talk about overrated. Go look at the Net Yards list of Punters...He was great then...not now! No, he isn't hands down the best punter in history. I don't think he is even top 20 in ANY statistical category when you look at punters throughout NFL history.
The Rams had terrible punters and kickers before Frank Corral became their Placekicker in 1978 so it's likely that desperation was a key factor in bringing in Rae Guy, after all the REAL Ray Guy did make a 61 yard FG in college.
