for those that think the products look too matte or chrome like, please check out this video ua-cam.com/video/09ajWUhBkZg/v-deo.html which shows an easy trick to add in the gloss look whilst still capturing fantastic product shots for shiny objects
Thanks Karl. I don't do product photography (I don't do photography for living), but I am as always fascinated by your craftsmanship and I do believe that this genre of photography will always require humans to be involved...
Karl, I bought your large cone and love it! So effective! However, in a lot of situations I find it to be too small...can you please come up with a large one? I would buy it instantly! :) Thanks!
Hi, Karl! Does the background white bleed into the object photographed, considering it-s that close to the object? And how is it not reducing contrast (washing out) at that distance, while going for 255 white? It's been fun been following you for decades now, I think :-)
My experience is that it does not so much bleed into the object, but you'll miss the natural shadow. If you like a shadow under the object, this is also not the way to do it. But it is a great technique for the necklace for instance, because that does not have any shadow on the back side. It all depends on the level of photography you're aiming at. The cone is a brilliant solution by the way.
Nice video, I’m subscribed to the website and I’ve learnt so much. My only thought with this particular setup, is the white background bleeding onto the product. I’m guessing if you raised the glass high enough that would solve this problem?
Genius! Thank you! Would you explain what material is light cone is made of? And can i use just shoot through umbrella or big 165 umbrella with diffuser as one light source? With reflector from opposite side?
Another perfect tutorial Karl! Even though I-love-the-result using the cone, it makes the products to look like matte finished for the less reflective and semi-gloss finish for the extremely reflective objects. what can we do to introduce the true percentage of the shininess to the viewers?
Another excellent tutorial Karl. I needed to do some flat-lay images recently and came up with a great system for rigging the camera horizontally. Simply attach a Manfrotto SuperClamp directly to your tripod (no head) with a Double Female 3/8 adapter #066. Then clamp a monopod #3016 into the Super Clamp and extend it over the table. You can connect the camera directly or add a monopod head #3232. Rotate the camera in the clamp to level and extend it as needed. You can also add a sandbag if needed to the monopod to balance the camera and lens. Cheers!
Very interesting technique. But what if we’re shooting something that should be standing on the table and have a shadow. Like shoes or bags. Especially white product
I like the idea. But some of the pictures you showed feel really at the edge of being overexposed. Is that a specific risk of this technique and something to keep in mind?
Nice technique. Question, if you want the product to have any kind of shadow on the surface, this technique of under-lighting would not be the solution. Correct ?
@5:40 I do agree with you for other products, but already with the door handle the problem starts… Yes, it does look much better, BUT it is not very “honest” ;-) And with jewellery it is even worse. By looking at this shot you might assume that this piece has got a matt surface when it actually is highly polished…
Hello, Karl, apart from my slight criticism in my other comment ;-) another question… Does the _opacity_ of the cone material influence the effect good enough that one could dose that effect somewhat more carefully (by choosing a somewhat _less_ opaque material)? Thank you ;-)
Hi, the opacity will only affect the exposure or the amount of light that can get through it. The most important thing on this material and something we tested many iterations and formulas with the factory to get right is called the 'optical density' and that is how the light spreads and how smooth the gradient will be. Optical density can be affected by the type of material, the thickness of the material and of course the light scattering properties of the material. Things like opal acrylic sheets, LEE 216, LEE 400 lux etc all have excellent optical density for working with good gradient lighting which is what we had to also achieve with this material.
@@VisualEducationStudio Hi, Karl, thank you so much for your quick and friendly answer. Very German working attitude of yours, might be due to your first name… ;-) Yes, this totally makes sense to me what you are saying. It must be rather difficult to find the right density for the material. So, in might case, it might be best to jump into a huge soft box myself… just kidding ;-) I am looking forward to watching your excellent content, have a nice week!
Thanks. We have this video ua-cam.com/video/y7uBr6CnTF8/v-deo.htmlsi=HvTTHQKcDn8Gbwuy to demonstrate how to keep the product looking glossy when using the Lightcone.
Товар - фен - чёрного цвета, в конусе он стал серым - это perfect?? Плюс отражение белого фона в краях изделия такие, что края исчезают - это просто брак.
-there is just one problem with the cone: Everything looks a bit frosted. Not glossy any more. The black hair dryer and makeup even more so than the silver things. Not exactly what the client wants I guess. You should demonstrate with some frosted things. I wonder if this works perfectly then.
@@VisualEducationStudio Can you send a link to it? I looked but can't find it. The studio space will need constant light since we will also be using it to shoot the product videos. We are shooting treatment tables and we need to demonstrate the electric movements of the tables. We will gladly purchase the training... we will be purchasing light cones and v-flats too!
We think $70 for the large one and is reasonable. When you consider the price of a product you have to also consider the packaging, the marketing, the development and the amount of other work to get a product to a customer. It's never as simple as it seems.
Glad to hear that. I have to admit I felt exactly the same, especially with the hair dryer. If I only saw the resulting image, I would think it was dark grey and matte rather than black and glossy. Something in between the two versions would probably work better.
Really?? That is horrible! Sorry , it is so disappointing to see a professional photographer who 'teaches' trying to sell that garbage. Guess, you need the money! Another sellout! Sad!
This comment is strange for its lack of accuracy and insight. Karl has been a photographer shooting for clients for nearly 30 years but as a company we've also been teaching photography through our platform for over 15 years (very successfully too). Karl with his partners V-Flat World designed the LightCone photography tool and of course is happy to help promote the product and show what it can do, it's a successful product used by tens of thousands of photographers so I'm not sure how you can 'sell out' when you are designing and selling your own product that just doesn't make any sense? I hope you can reflect on your opinions now you have more accurate insight.

Very generous of you to give a your photography secrets, good video informative and to the point.
Glad it was helpful!
Adequate diffusion is the key here... Awesome results!
I like the technique! The only criticism I could see is if the product manufacturer says "wait, our product is glossy, not matte..."
Hi, in our next video using the Light Cone we show you how to easily create a high gloss and diffused look at the same time.
Awesome tutorial! Thank you so much Karl!
Light cone! Thanks bud!
This is astonishing!!!
Amazing! Thank you so much.
Awesome!! Love the tips on using your cone and positioning of tripod. Hope to see another video in July or August. Thanks.
That light cone is voodoo magic. Amazing!

Thank you very much.
So much easier and more effective! You are such a pro. You said are using LED constant lights? Any specific reason for that?
Hi thanks just to show different ways of working and to make it easier for the guys making this video!
great video!
Thank you so much sir. I am following you since 2014 still you are innovative. I learned so much from you. THANK YOU SO MUCH SIR.
You are most welcome

Thank you
Great work!
Very nice, how about a coloured board under the glass, would it spill or shadow
So simple, so great!
Thanks for such a cool trick
No problem!

Hello
Where can I purchase the white object used to secure the dryer?
I thought it was a very nice object with no marks on it.

Great video. Are LED better for product than strobes? What tripod are you using here?
Hi Karl excellent video and very informative. Have you got any guide lines for shooting trophies which reflect everything including the camera.
Hi, you might find this class useful: visualeducation.com/class/shooting-shiny-chrome-objects/
where can i buy the cone and how much is it?
Wow, hello Karl.
The cone you made it by yourself.?
what lens are you shooting with ?:}
Super

Hi Karl, is it possible to purchase your cones in Europe? I'm based in southern France. Thanks. Rémi

That's correct
are u working on SONY?
Love it, is the cone labeled with your name?
Hi thanks, yes it is. We make it in association with V Flat World
Amazon needs cutout only for jewellery. I tried and it gives error says image has non white BG. Thanks for the trick anyway it is good.

👏👏👏
No card needed. Just 10k of lightning 😅. Still a great video. Thank you
looks like nice with the cone, but the hair dryer looks matte, not glossy, which might misrepresent the product.
Thanks. We have this video ua-cam.com/video/y7uBr6CnTF8/v-deo.htmlsi=HvTTHQKcDn8Gbwuy to demonstrate how to keep the product looking glossy when using the Lightcone.
S/O to the cam op on the 4:58 Shot lol
Interesting to me that you're using a Sony camera body and two very classicly good Sony lenses.

4:43 Maybe wonderful result, but looks false - dull instead of gloss. Same thing with hair dryer.
Looks light somebody went mad with the dulling spray

How would you get perfect white backgrounds like this with larger, furniture size products?
I'd use white acylic base sheets and bounce lights of the walls behind to reflect in the white gloss acrylic. This is covered in depth on our site.

This setup and cone will not work for a lot of products, for example eyewear, sunglasses, etc.
Hi, it works really well. We've used it on glasses and sunglasses.
Alas, but this will not do, the glossy surface becomes matte.
