holy crap this was the best tutorial ever.
Glad you liked. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Absolutely!!! I have never seen anyone suggesting to put one light source on top of object!! What a result!!!
A_nDinG glad you find it useful 🤗🤗
This is exactly the answer I have been looking for after watching tons of product photography videos. You are the first person to explain this without trying to sell a bunch of expensive equipment.
4 months searching for a good lightning tutorial, and boom! I find this! Simple spectacular
Oh good to know. Thank you! 🤗🤗
You way of explaining things and your work is way better than all expensive geard photographers
Oh Thanks for sharing with me. Appreciate these comment, makes my effort worthwhile. Thanks again!
I was stuck in a rut at work we have to shoot all kinds of white shots and I listened to you BOOM!! Got the result I needed!
Glad for it!!!
This is absolutely brilliant. Having spent a lot of time on youtube trying to educate myself this tip truly drove home the dual benefit of light position and size for product photography. Go figure I only stumbled upon this nearly 1 1/2 years later.
Glad it is helpful. Subscribe for more. 🤗😬
Awesome!! One of the best videos on starting off on product photography. Thanks.
Thanks for different angle to photography non reflective items if you have umbrellas. Great work as always!!
Excellent demonstrations of light sources (large, small and position) on products. I have to start using my C stand more for a top light or my boom. Thanks again!
Glad you found it useful
Thank you so much!!! You solved my problem/challenge in under 8 minutes! My client will be so pleased with this simple solution.
Thanks for watching it. Enjoy the new idea
I can hear from thousands miles that you are Italian :D
😂 I know my accent is very very Italian
W Italia 😅 ti auguro un buon anno nuq vo
Thank you for teaching me - large light from the top instead of small light from the side.
The best training I've seen thus far. So simple but yet so great.
Thanks!
Thanks Derrick
I didn't know you could use the flash from top. Great tips here!! Thank you!!
I just recently ordered some lights but they're the small ones. I think I'm gonna return them and buy the bigger ones lol. Thanks for this very informative video.
Thanks for watching
I been searching everywhere but can't figure out how to get pure white background when taking flat lay clothing photos. I hang my clothes on a white wall but everytime I take the photo with my canon m100 it makes the background bit greyish or something bit of yellow on it. I tried every settings I can think of. Also tried many set up with the lights and flash etc..
Your professional guide will be really approciated Sir.
Many thanks.
Eva xx
First of all consider that by physical law it’s impossible to have a white pure background with the same light you use for the product, because the background is always little bit farter to the flash compare to the product so in order to get it total pure white, you should overexpose (and ruin) the product. Ok now besides this let’s see What are the camera setting? Do you used flash or constant light? If it’s yellowish it. An be that the color balance is not properly set or maybe some natural light spilling in to the photo. Anyway consider that you have to whiten the background in photoshop after that, you can check the other video I did about it. THIS ua-cam.com/video/iN6KVqSWBtc/v-deo.html
Very well done video. Good insight. I like light from the top now!
🥂🥂
WOW! simple yet elegant. A new trick I didn't know. Thank you for the video!!!!
Your welcome!!!
I quite enjoy the sense of presence and realism I get from the side lit images. It may not be as purely focused on the product as the top lit products, where the environment and shadows are basically eliminated, but the side lighting introduces a sense of scale and depth that makes it very realistic while still maintaining an exceptionally clean aesthetic. That said, I feel like the side lit shots will work better with a slightly more grainy/textured surface, like a dense paper, and with a rich and vibrant color, or very slightly off-white shade. I’ll have to play around with this myself, excellent video!
Thanks for sharing it. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I like the best professional superb tip you share i will definitely do it, you gave me a discovery to give the best for my product shots, You are the PRO, also i like the way you teach is very clear and accurate. I am now a follower of your channel.

In all my years of photographing products, I´ve never tried the top light source method, I use cross-lighting modified and get nice results. I will give your method a chance in my next project. Thanks!

Thank you! - This is such a clear and beautifully presented demonstration. Showed me just what I needed to know.
Glad it was helpful, thanks
This is a quick but precise video. Thank you!
Your welcome 🙏🏼!!
That is a good technique where the top of the product is narrower than the bottom, since the top doesnt cast a shadow. But if the top was wider than the bottom like a drink with a little umbrella, or even the traditional coke bottle shape where the middle tapers in, the middle would be darker and if the top bulge was wider than the bottom it would cast a shadow.
Yes totally agree. This is not a technique that works for every photo of course
I like your simplicity of explaining
Thx 👍
Thank you!!
This was very helpful thank you. You gave me 4 examples quickly and clearly. You sped me along my way when making decisions for my shoot today. Appreciated!
Super glad it was helpful. Thanksss
Great video. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I have Godox AD600 and I’ve always thought it wouldn’t be enough to a product shoot. I was wrong. Thank you once again

Brilliant! Simple and to the point. Thank you
Thanks for watching, hope you find the other videos interesting too
Great tip! Thanks! What about the white balance from the camera? which one is the best for this exercise?
Always shot in raw, keep the AWB and then balance within the computer software (Lightroom or Photoshop), using a grey card or you can even use the white backdrop.
Best explaination sir ❤️🤝 very usefull👍💯
Thank you and welcome :)
Great tutorial it helped me out alot with my product photography

Good video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Hello there,
Thank you for this tutorial. I’m a photographer and videographer and I’m currently working a lot with Amazon pictures. I was trying to improve my technique to minimize the working time and maximize the quality. What I noticed working like you showed in the video, is that increasing the amount of light from the flash you can have a “brighter” white, so very close to 100% pure as required from Amazon standard. But doing so, you’ll also increase the highlights on the product, making it too bright. So in some cases I’ll create a mask in Photoshop of the product (if it’s not too complicated to sorround) and I decrease the highlights or, if I’m not too happy of the white, I’ll just make a mask of the product and apply a white background layer below the layer of the product, but getting rid of the natural shadow.
What do you suggest to have almost 100% pure white background but at the same time keeping a strong colour of the product without highlights? Is the method I previously explained correct?
Perdona il messaggio lungo ma mi farebbe piacere confrontarmi con un professionista come te.
Un saluto!
Yuri
Ciao Yuri, if you got so much work I would use and extra lighting for the background. overexpose all the photo in order to have whiter background it's not a viable option, you should always exposed correctly the product and of course is physical impossible to get pure white with one light if it's the same that lit the product. I have another video where I give tips how to make the background brighter in and easy and fast way. But rather than that if you want to make a fast job you got light the background separately.
watch this.
ua-cam.com/video/iN6KVqSWBtc/v-deo.html
Thank you for all your advices! I’ll try them all!
Have you considered using glass to place the product on? I shoot product small and large mostly on glass to completely eliminate shadows, making it easier to knock out the background.
That's an idea, but most of the time I like having some shadows under the product it gives a sense of space and dimension.
@@LaredoMontoneri I totally agree with that, it is unnatural to have a light coming in from the left and not have a shadow on the right. In my work it is a necessity to knockout the background, but I can add a hint of shadow in post if needed. : )
your name gave it away your italian, god bless you
Thanks bless you too.. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🤗🤗🤗
SO helpful!!!!
Thank you!!!
Hi thank you, I have two notes The side light is nicer but you will have the shadow, so you can use another flash to make clear white background, REGARDS
Yes totally agree. I just wanted to do the set in the most affordable way so using only one light!
The light direction changes only the shadows. The brighter is due to distance reduction. Light is closer coming from top increasing its power reaching the paper. That is why the flash with no modifiyer is again brighter. Because power is bigger. There is no relation between brightness and light direction. Use the first inclined light but put it really closer with same exif and that will be brighter again. But with shadows
Yes infact with the light on top basically you are closer to the background also and this helps to brighten up. Thanks for stopping by 😀😀
This was exactly what I was looking for .. thank you sooo much
Yourrrr welcomeeee
great tutorial - simple , effective and straight to the subject. Btw you sound a bit like Slavoj Zizek :)

That's why UA-cam exist, thank you Vincent
Just getting started with photography, mostly Astrophotography, but the lighting tips are quite useful as I try new things, thanks!
@@UNSCPILOT Oh WOw Astrophotography it's interesting and kinda niche..
@@LaredoMontoneri Been a huge space / tech nerd since I saw Starwars and star trek as a kid, and I'd already built a gaming PC that could handle heavy image processing, so it's an easy fit for me to get started on it, but since I'm using a DSLR it's also giving me room to use it for experamenting with other types of photography, and I do a little 3D printing and model building too so these lighting tips could come in handy if I want to show them off some :D
Well glad it can help.. i am huge fan of Start Wars too, even if now with these new spin-off I think they are pushing to much far away.. I mean in a galaxy far far away :)
Haven't seeing the last yet.
Nice video. Gave me some good ideas
Good to know. Thank you for stopping by! 😃😃😃
Nice one thank you!

Brilliant! The accent was a little tough to wade through, but the information was concise and clear; exactly what I needed to know to compare use of overhead boom vs. side lighting.

Amazing video. I’m stuck though, I shoot clothing on hangers and need a pure white bg. I use two strobes to achieve pure white but that light spills onto the clothing. How do I avoid that please?
