This is exactly the answer I have been looking for after watching tons of product photography videos. You are the first person to explain this without trying to sell a bunch of expensive equipment.
Excellent demonstrations of light sources (large, small and position) on products. I have to start using my C stand more for a top light or my boom. Thanks again!
I like the best professional superb tip you share i will definitely do it, you gave me a discovery to give the best for my product shots, You are the PRO, also i like the way you teach is very clear and accurate. I am now a follower of your channel.
This is absolutely brilliant. Having spent a lot of time on youtube trying to educate myself this tip truly drove home the dual benefit of light position and size for product photography. Go figure I only stumbled upon this nearly 1 1/2 years later.
Always shot in raw, keep the AWB and then balance within the computer software (Lightroom or Photoshop), using a grey card or you can even use the white backdrop.
I saw 4 seconds in and I saw the umbrella behind your head and I thought immidatly: "Why havent I thought of that?!" and then 4 sec later "if he gonna tell us to like from above ima like this video", and now I have liked this video and subscribed
I just recently ordered some lights but they're the small ones. I think I'm gonna return them and buy the bigger ones lol. Thanks for this very informative video.
In all my years of photographing products, I´ve never tried the top light source method, I use cross-lighting modified and get nice results. I will give your method a chance in my next project. Thanks!
Ciao complimenti per il video molto chiaro! Vorrei chiederti cosa ne pensi invece di utilizzare un green screen per poi in post produzione selezionare il verde e renderlo bianco al 100%. Grazie!
That is a good technique where the top of the product is narrower than the bottom, since the top doesnt cast a shadow. But if the top was wider than the bottom like a drink with a little umbrella, or even the traditional coke bottle shape where the middle tapers in, the middle would be darker and if the top bulge was wider than the bottom it would cast a shadow.
@@LaredoMontoneri thank you for the answer...i have not big experience in photography and i am trying to photograph my wooden carvings for online shop...your video was enlightening
I been searching everywhere but can't figure out how to get pure white background when taking flat lay clothing photos. I hang my clothes on a white wall but everytime I take the photo with my canon m100 it makes the background bit greyish or something bit of yellow on it. I tried every settings I can think of. Also tried many set up with the lights and flash etc.. Your professional guide will be really approciated Sir. Many thanks. Eva xx
First of all consider that by physical law it’s impossible to have a white pure background with the same light you use for the product, because the background is always little bit farter to the flash compare to the product so in order to get it total pure white, you should overexpose (and ruin) the product. Ok now besides this let’s see What are the camera setting? Do you used flash or constant light? If it’s yellowish it. An be that the color balance is not properly set or maybe some natural light spilling in to the photo. Anyway consider that you have to whiten the background in photoshop after that, you can check the other video I did about it. THIS ua-cam.com/video/iN6KVqSWBtc/v-deo.html
Amazing video. I’m stuck though, I shoot clothing on hangers and need a pure white bg. I use two strobes to achieve pure white but that light spills onto the clothing. How do I avoid that please?
The window you see doesn’t have enough lights for the camera to record it. So all the light you see in the photo is given by the top umbrella. Or even softbox is fine. Just use the proper power and setting and you get it too. Trust me it’s physics
I quite enjoy the sense of presence and realism I get from the side lit images. It may not be as purely focused on the product as the top lit products, where the environment and shadows are basically eliminated, but the side lighting introduces a sense of scale and depth that makes it very realistic while still maintaining an exceptionally clean aesthetic. That said, I feel like the side lit shots will work better with a slightly more grainy/textured surface, like a dense paper, and with a rich and vibrant color, or very slightly off-white shade. I’ll have to play around with this myself, excellent video!
Brilliant and simplistic video. I sometimes shoot my bouquets with a continuous overhead light with a white background on an iPhone. However this turns out dark. Do you recommend I use a strobe instead?
Hi May, thanks for replying. Are you shooting with a Large Softbox or Umbrella as Overhead light? It's important that the surface of the light modifier would be large enough to go a little bit over the background. For sure if you use a strobe you gonna get more power but then as to be proportionated to the exposure on the bouquet otherwise you overexpose the main subject of your photo. If I could see a photo of your set I could better understand how to address you.
You can check in the description for all the equipment and links also. Yes I think it should work, as being on top you should not have any reflection on the bottom.
Ciao Laredo, Molto interessante!
