How To Dial In Your Guitar Amp - Input Gain

  • In this video, I demonstrate how to achieve my ideal tone. I always bang on about edge of breakup guitar tones and this is how to achieve them.
For today's video, I'm going to be using a Marshall Studio Silver Jubilee as 1. It labels the controls correctly and it's got a master volume. This technique will work on most amps.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

You sir have helped me immensely! I have been struggling getting a good crunch sound from the June on the lead channel and it always sounded thin. Increasing the input gain and using the clean channel is the way to go!

Thanks. Cristal clear and straight to the point information, that alone is important for me. I tend to shy away from mid to high gain a little but that sound is fantastic and I will definitely be farting around with the input gain more than I might normally do when I plug in next!

Spot on. I think most of them who struggle to get great clean sound out of Boss Katana have the gain off or to low. With clean channel, pretty much on both Volume and Gain the clean sound is great.

Great vid, as always Paul. Pushing the input gain up really fattened up the sound, even seemed to add more mids and bass to the sound. Didn't expect the gain knob to do that.

A video elaborating more on driving front of amp vs power tubes would be really cool. Explain the way the amp works and how to get the full tone of any amp. You touch on this in almost every video demo of the new Marshall 20 watts but one video explaining this dynamic would e great! Thanks for the great videos! I have learned a lot!

Great video. I have the mini Jubilee and this is super helpful. Some think this amp is fuzzy and cannot dial in or don't want to put some effort to dial in some great tones and keep comparing it to the JCM 800 and its tone. So sad they don't know how good can this amp be.

But I’m curious, can you do the same with the second channel/ lead channel on third mini silver Jubilee? How you would dial that to get a great tone and drive only using the amp and no pedal :)?

Great video Paul - thanks - would the same approach apply when the Master Volume has be really low, for bedroom levels? you seemed to have your Master Volume set around 12 o'clock or so and the GAIN sweet spot was then around 2 o'clock - but typically, even on a 5W amp, if the Master Volume goes much about 9 o'clock it is just too loud for neighbours. or how do you handle your amps set for bedroom levels?

I love your channel! Even tho it’s a bit beyond my level... both in playing ability and gear quality. (I’m just a hobby player) but, as a hobbyist, I’m still striving for a good tone. So, on behalf of all of us hobbyists out there that love your channel, I’m wondering if you could help us out a bit. I would love a video directed at getting good tones out of gear that us mere mortals are using 😁... for instance ,I’m playing a casino, into a danelectro EQ , bluesdriver, behringer analog delay into a Bugera V5 w a 1x12 greenback cab..( that I built myself, lol) .... and most guys I know (IRL) are playing monoprice or orange micro or Bugera etc... Now I know there’s channels like 60 cycle hum ( which I love too) but I’d love to hear your thoughts on playing through gear that most us hobby players would be using... thank you , you’re the best!

Cheers DW, I do many videos on the Boss Katana which is a reasonably priced amp. If you're talking about valve amps, It doesn't matter the price but I can recommend that a valve amp needs to be turned up to get what I would consider to be a great tone.

@@TheStudioRats wow, thanks for responding! And yes, I’m finding that out.. I’ve gotten used to pushing the front of the amp. And keeping the power amp volume pretty low..sounds good in my little studio room.. but when I bump up the master volume it’s a whole different thing going on.. maybe I should add a compressor to my chain? Or maybe it’s just a result of me being an beginner/intermediate player and I just need to learn a little bit more to get a better sound, I’m not sure.. i’ve watched all your amp set up videos about 100 times and I really appreciate those!! , they’re very helpful..

Hi Paul, thanks for the video! May I ask one question: The Silver Jubilee being a two-channel amp, do you always set your edge-of-breakup tone on the clean(er) channel and then use pedals to drive the amp, or do you ever use the lead channel as well?
