Thank you for this interview. I'm a lifelong fan of Madonna's and always wondered how Donna and Niki came to work with her. They are both super-talented in their own right. Niki and I used to go to the same church here in LA. She sang a few times and, let me tell you, I'm surprised the roof didn't blow off. She was just amazing. Powerful and soulful, which we rarely got to see when she toured w/ Madonna. She was also very sweet and kind. And Donna is such a great dancer and singer who makes it all look so easy.

Loved these Niki and Donna conversations. Thank you for doing this. :). I'm glad you asked Niki about clarifying a bit deeper that she hadn't heard of this Madonna in 1987 that she was asked to audition for. And nor was she aware she was this major superstar. I just find that hard to believe especially if she was in the Music business. Bill Medley her former boss knew Madonna.
Even if you didn't listen to that kind of music, there's almost no way you could not have heard or seen her. She was everywhere on every magazine all over the news. You go to record stores in those days her image was everywhere. MTV was massive for the music industry her videos were being played 24/7.
I know who Britney Spears is even during the height of her pop stardom. And I've never listened to a Britney Spears song and never been a fan, I could careless. It's not my kind of music, but I'm aware of how popular she is. Yet, Madonna was a hundred times that by the time 1987 rolled around so it's hard to believe she had no knowledge of her. I primarily listen to rock music, but I know Madonna.

Nikki i love you but i don't believe you didn't know who Madonna was. This was around the "true blue" era (the tour that followed and for wich y'all were casting was Who's That Girl World Tour), Madonna was already established as the biggest superstar, she was on her third album "true blue" that was a HUGE sucess. Even if it was before, she was globaly massive with her "like a virgin" album as well, America was crazy for her and she was everywhere, with ppl dressed like her and all the news abt her, notably her performance at the mtv music awards rolling in the floor dressed as a bride. You just couldn't NOT know who she was. She was a global superstar already. How could you be in the entertainment business (jazz or whatever) and not know who "this Madonna person" was? First of all, these two not working with Madonna shows what M has lost. Her tours without these two have never been the same and never will. Look at what M has now... no live band and countless dancers on the Celebration tour. What a mess.
I don't buy that NH didn't know who Madonna was at the time.. but i do think she wasn't very familiar with her . Her background was Anita and many soul singers. She was a jazzer but COME ON.... She didnt know Like A Virgin.. that's "sus" lmao.
Madonna losing D and N is still a huge loss to her career. And she did lose them. Yes they've moved on and it was a job... and the only reason they ride on her coattails is because that's what they are most famous for.
That will be their biggest legacy: they worked and sang with M. They talk about her because everyone interviewing is going to ask. I could see M and NH ending a friendship but if you lose Donna, you need to look inside yourself lol. Because Donna is a very kind and gentle soul.
I wonder what both of them really think about M now.. considering she's so insufferable.

@@shutupandfkoffI loved madonna back in her hey day but it's like wtf she's a boring 65 year old slapper trotting out the same old crap trying to shock! It's seriously laughable now! In the digital age we are forced to live in, madonna is so second rate! It's like yawn to me. I find her granny antics incredibly boring, as do alot of people, we all get a good laugh outta her, so that's something! Whereas the legendary Kate bush doesn't need to tour at 80 years old...gyrating around like some washed up has been!

And I'm amazed to see these same old people still saying the same bullst about her. She's had the most top 10 hits ever for a female and 50 no.1 1s dance hit songs. Almost All of those songs were co written and produced by madonna. Her collaborators have praised her sense and talent with hard working. And she has one of the most massive catalogues in pop history and stayed in the business for 40 years with all the successful and huge tours, which have been acclaimed, set the bar for others to follow and changed pop culture. Is that easy for you?? Is that even possible with 'lack of talent' you dared to speak of? Then why cant others do it? Sure go ahead, tell your favorite to sing and dance and perform and put a dazzling production for over 2 hours every night around the world with 79 dates waiting. And get acclaimed.
Show us how she's doing. Sell out with expensive tickets in those arenas. And tell me the talent.
I wish your favorite could sing live move and dance just half of what madonna does at 65 now. That's a real talent with staying power.
      🙄
