As i started watching f1, ocon was generally represented as a bad driver, so i thought he was bad, but as I watched more f1, i realized he's actually a good driver considering he's in a midfield team
I kinda like Ocon if only because I think his talent gets dismissed by the fans. He's been treated poorly by Racing Point and Alpine and I hope it works out at Haas.
He got treated far better than he deserved by both those teams imo. This is ultimately a team sport and his total inability to see the bigger picture is not balanced out by sheer talent like it might be with an Alonso or Verstappen etc. He behaves like a diva who has earned the right to be an asshole but he simply cannot back that up with his performance level. If he was amazing on track all would be forgiven but he's not, he's mediocre.
Far better!? He had to give up race position to gasly when he was rhe fastest driver. He also wasnt given upgrades which pierre was given. He is good. There’s no reason to deem him as just average. To me a driver like Albon epitomizes the label of average. Anyway, I was originally a fan of Ocon, but over time I couldn’t help but come to despise him.

That’s honestly a shame, because he’s such a capable driver, held his own against very good teammates and when he’s nice, he’s such a sound lad that I wouldn’t mind at all being my friend. I hope now he’s out of the toxic Alpine environment, in a pretty stable Haas that’s on a good trajectory, he can thrive again.
Both Racing Point and Alpine did him dirty. Hopefully in Haas he can calm down a bit without a threat of losing his seat, despite being on par or faster than his teammate. Actually the majority of crashes he had with Pérez was actually Checo's fault. As for Alpine/Renault, they are such a disappointment as a works team, that in hindsight they look almost looks like a fraud, considering how many drivers fell for the idea of driving for a works team, and then realizing that they are just a midfield team led by incompetent clowns.
Is he the best or a potential future champion? No.Even Sainz level? No. Is he as bad as stroll and latifi? No. So that means he is awerage by F1 standards.
@andrisositis2229 in the right car he is a potential world champion. There's a reason Mercedes had him in their academy. He'd be closer to Verstappen in the red bull than Perez ever was. He's arguably in the top 5 when it comes to wet weather driving given his performances in the Alpine (and also at Manor).

Alonso, Hamilton, Max, and Norris have all clashed with teammates on track over and over. But they are considered "tough competitors" because they had good cars at the time Ocon has a couple incidents and is branded a "bad teammate" because the only time he had a consistently decent car in his career it was snatched away from him to be given to Stroll by his daddy. This is the story of a kid without a lot of money scratching and clawing his way to the top of a rich kids sport and when he finally makes it he is branded "too aggressive" by all the other rich kids
And why has Ocon then never beaten his team mate in the course of a full season on pure performance level? And no, 2022 doesn't count because Alonso lost a crazy big amount of points due to bad luck. If you can't beat your team mate and only make headlines when you're crashing with them, no wonder it's not a good look.
@@patepulkkinenvtec2403 it's funny when people use the Alonso metric as a way to say he never beaten a teammate but ignore the amount of dnfs/dsq he had in 2018 as compared to Perez, his dnfs in 2023 too or the fact that he did beat Wherlein in 2016 since on countback he had the highest finishing position when they were teammates (P12 vs P14; none of them scored points in the last 9 races). Wherlein scored his 1pt when Haryanto was his teammate not Ocon.
Ocon has genuinely been faster than Gasly over the 2 years theyve been together and the head to head and laptime percentage shows it. The fact that hasn't translated into points for him but has for Gasly tells you all you need to know about Alpine

Saying that Ocon is one of the most average drivers is mad. Went head to head with Alonso when they were teammates and is one of the most solid driver in the midfield teams. This year he underperformed a bit but it was probably due to the lack of motivation cause he knew he will be leaving. Before that he was driving better than Gasly a the start of the season when Alpine was a complete tractor. Definetely not deserving the status of "average driver"
People think the word average means bad but it doesn't and I didn't mean it that way, hence why I said on a talent level he could be a consideration for a no.2 role in a top team. On the upper end we have drivers like Max, on the bottom end we have Stroll and the average drivers who are all in the midfield are drivers like Ocon, Gasly, Hulkenberg etc who are all still really good drivers

Yeah, that is insane. The majority of the crashes with Pérez was actually Checo's fault, he raced Alonso hard, but without crash (and to be honest, who could blame him wanting to show off against a 2-time WDC, who has a rep. of destroying teammates, toxic Alonso fans hate him because he was not going out of his way of thanking Fernando for the Hungary win), and the crash with Gasly in Australia 2023 was actually a stupid race start accident, nothing to do with their rivalry. The only valid argument is that he sometimes focuses too much on beating the teammate, losing positions to other drivers in the process.
He's not Verstappen/Leclerc/Hamilton. I wouldn't say he's even at the level of Piastri or Norris. Yet he's much better than the weaker drivers on the grid like Stroll and the rookies. That makes him average.

Okay who are we kidding. I’m not an Esteban fan or anything but I have been following the teams he’s raced for. With Perez during the Force India season, Perez crashed more with Ocon than Ocon did with Perez. With Ricciardo well, Ricciardo was miles ahead. With Alonso, we’re literally talking about Alonso. The guy who would put his teammate in the wall first chance he got. Sure there weren’t any on track battles with Alonso but Alonso managed to verbally trash Ocon every chance he got. With Pierre everyone says oh Monaco my poor Pierre. And his PR team played that very nicely. What about Australia 2023? Ocon literally accepted half the fault for that incident even though we all knew there was no fault of his there. He played the good guy. What about when Gasly did not give Ocon the place back in Canada? Wasn’t that the moral thing to do? If Esteban did it, everyone would be crying wolf. Everyone just has a bias against the lad from Brazil 2018 and no one has seen past it. That’s all there is to it.
I'm all for Haas taking a huge leap forward this season, but I am really bummed that we don't get to see a season of DTS with both Ocon and Steiner in Haas. Punches would've been thrown, and doors would've been fucksmashed beyond recognition.
I don’t buy this “bad teammate” thing, given that 90% of his teammate crashes were clearly the other driver’s fault. People don’t like him because standing up to Fernando Alonso isn’t good PR.
Esteban is and will always be my favorite Driver. He always takes the opportunity when its there to score Podiums. He never had a car that should have been able to score a podium but he scored nearly every season with Renaul / Alpine one. With Perez there were more incidents on Checo , with DR there were no incidents and with Alonso despite he raced him hard (some would say too hard) the only crash was on Alonso. Bringin Gasly in that team was always a war declaration on Ocon and the first crash was actually on Pierre (Melbourne) this year yeah Monaco was on Esteban but I think if it was the other way round the Public hate would have never been so hard it would have been "a bold move" and then the theme would have ended so I think this is more of an train everybody is jumping on because its easy to hate on Ocon. Haas have singed the best driver they ever had in their Lineup and I can´t wait to see what he can do with an real engine...
One thing that for sure doesn't helped him is the fact that he has always driven for some of the most disorganised messes of the grid. Manor went down the drain, Force India went into administration with pomp and circumstance and Alpine is just too french
Ocon has this image only because he faced, fought against drivers who have a big fanbase and never accepted to be n°2 driver. Thats it. Was Verstappen a good teammate against Ricciardo and Sainz? Absolutely not. Alonso with Hamilton? 💀 Ocon is in F1 to race. Period.
Verstappen beat Sainz and Ricciardo. Alonso got equal points with Hamilton, and they are both generational talents... Ocon? Has gotten beaten by his team mate every year apart from 2022 when Alonso lost a huge amount of points due to reliability related DNFs and should have beaten Ocon comfortably. There you have it: Ocon is not hated because he races hard or because he has been up against drivers with a big fan base, he is hated because he can't justify his selfish attitude with his on-track performances.
My opinion of Ocon is that I don’t doubt he’s fast, I just think he’s not very smart. He deserves his place in the grid, but he needs to learn to relax and not to play the selfish game.
To be fair to him, I think his partnership with Gasly was a lot better than his with Checo - and it wasn't always his fault that he ended up tangling with him. Singapore was one of my reasons why I wasn't sure about Checo going to RB, but everyone was just thinking back to Sakhir... 🤷🏻♀️ (I'm not an Ocon fan, per se, or against Checo, I'm just pointing it out.) The celebrations in Brazil last year made it look like the guys had at least buried the hatchet. I hope that he's more relaxed at Haas. His talent has been so undermined by his reputation that he is often overlooked.
I think HASS will be good for him. They obviously want him and he will be the team leader and his teammate is a rookie. He will feel wanted. Plus HASS seems much less toxic than Alpine.
I recently listened to a podcast from the Race, with Uncle Glenn as the host. I don't remember the 2 other people, certainly not Uncle Scott or Uncle Ed. These 2 that I forget are senior presents in F1, and one of them said something about how political Fernando acted during his stint with Felipe at Ferrari, merely due to only 1 occurence, the 2010 AustralianGP, where Felipe held off a P3 from Fernando. After that, he said, Fernando's management immediately 'speaks' to Ferrari to prevent this type of thing from ever happening again, hence explaining how Felipe was almost like driving a different car from Fernando until their last race together. Remember 'Fernando is faster than you'? This was one of the manifestation of that 'speaking' from Fernando's management. With this in mind, I think Esteban knew he needed to show that back down for nobody, even if the teammate was the Fernando Alonso. It's a correct mentality as I view it, but not at the correct place. If Alpine were actually fighting for a championship, this mentality is a must-have. But Alpine were only fighting for the lower top 5 at best. Teamwork is what needed, not asserting dominance on each other's nerves.

I actually think as a driver you underrated him a bit in this video if we follow your logic. If Fernando was at his peak when he was ocons teammate as you say here then him almost matching him is an extremely impressive feat and would put him well past being simply a number 2 driver for a top team and more in the territory of a Carlos sainz to leclerc, who many people describe as a '1.5 driver'. Obviously he's had weaker seasons than his ones with Fernando and it all depends how you rate alonso to judge those peaks but I thought it was worth pointing out.
Ocon beat Alonso, perez and end of the season Daniel. The guy half the season in 2024 with the old spec car. Ocon won F3 in his rookie season and destroyed Verstappen in the same series. Ocon wasn't terrible impressive at Force India/Racing Point; and didn't seem to improve against Pérez in his second season. Meanwhile Lance actually had a decent couple of seasons, near matching Massa and getting Williams' only podium of the season in 2017 and then thrashing (an admittedly unimpressive) Sirotkin in 2018. I don't think his dropping for Lance was as unjust as you suggest. Lance's problem is that he simply isn't improving. If anything he's got *worse* over the last couple of seasons; Ocon meanwhile came back strong enough to keep Alonso honest in '21 and '22.

So much has been said about his supposedly underprivileged background. Yeah, sure, he wasn't born with a silver spoon on his mouth like Stroll, but he wasn't poor either : his family lived in a home, not in a HLM (Low-income housing here in France) and his father even owned a garage. And let's not forget he has been a Lotus & Mercedes Junior too. Well, early on, Seb was not necessarily the nicest guy ever, but he became one of the most beloved driver in the paddock as years passed because he matured as a human being and people liked that.
More like Seb just stopped winning and people started to like him. He was asked a couple of years ago would he do anything differently if he had the multi 21 situation at that moment, and he said no. So basically he has always had that mentality.

let's see what we have here. he had a win in his career which had been served by alonso on a golden plate ( nando put a legendary defense against lewis and ruined his own race). the very next year, same race ( hungary), he bizarrely put a defense on alonso and let others pass both of them. imo you will not return a such a favor back in that way. being in a non competitive car is not an excuse for a toxic companion.
The top teams all expect you to give up your race for the team and the number 1 driver; Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes & Aston Martin (if Stroll ever has a race that he has anything to give!). Ocon will never join one of these teams even as a number 2 driver because of how selfish he is.

Saying that Ocon is one of the most average drivers is mad. Went head to head with Alonso when they were teammates and is one of the most solid driver in the midfield teams. This year he underperformed a bit but it was probably due to the lack of motivation cause he knew he will be leaving. Before that he was driving better than Gasly a the start of the season when Alpine was a complete tractor. Definetely not deserving the status of "average driver"
People think the word average means bad but it doesn't and I didn't mean it that way, hence why I said on a talent level he could be a consideration for a no.2 role in a top team. On the upper end we have drivers like Max, on the bottom end we have Stroll and the average drivers who are all in the midfield are drivers like Ocon, Gasly, Hulkenberg etc who are all still really good drivers

Yeah, that is insane. The majority of the crashes with Pérez was actually Checo's fault, he raced Alonso hard, but without crash (and to be honest, who could blame him wanting to show off against a 2-time WDC, who has a rep. of destroying teammates, toxic Alonso fans hate him because he was not going out of his way of thanking Fernando for the Hungary win), and the crash with Gasly in Australia 2023 was actually a stupid race start accident, nothing to do with their rivalry.
The only valid argument is that he sometimes focuses too much on beating the teammate, losing positions to other drivers in the process.
He's not Verstappen/Leclerc/Hamilton. I wouldn't say he's even at the level of Piastri or Norris. Yet he's much better than the weaker drivers on the grid like Stroll and the rookies. That makes him average.

Okay who are we kidding. I’m not an Esteban fan or anything but I have been following the teams he’s raced for. With Perez during the Force India season, Perez crashed more with Ocon than Ocon did with Perez. With Ricciardo well, Ricciardo was miles ahead. With Alonso, we’re literally talking about Alonso. The guy who would put his teammate in the wall first chance he got. Sure there weren’t any on track battles with Alonso but Alonso managed to verbally trash Ocon every chance he got. With Pierre everyone says oh Monaco my poor Pierre. And his PR team played that very nicely. What about Australia 2023? Ocon literally accepted half the fault for that incident even though we all knew there was no fault of his there. He played the good guy. What about when Gasly did not give Ocon the place back in Canada? Wasn’t that the moral thing to do? If Esteban did it, everyone would be crying wolf. Everyone just has a bias against the lad from Brazil 2018 and no one has seen past it. That’s all there is to it.
I'm all for Haas taking a huge leap forward this season, but I am really bummed that we don't get to see a season of DTS with both Ocon and Steiner in Haas. Punches would've been thrown, and doors would've been fucksmashed beyond recognition.
I don’t buy this “bad teammate” thing, given that 90% of his teammate crashes were clearly the other driver’s fault. People don’t like him because standing up to Fernando Alonso isn’t good PR.
Esteban is and will always be my favorite Driver. He always takes the opportunity when its there to score Podiums. He never had a car that should have been able to score a podium but he scored nearly every season with Renaul / Alpine one. With Perez there were more incidents on Checo , with DR there were no incidents and with Alonso despite he raced him hard (some would say too hard) the only crash was on Alonso. Bringin Gasly in that team was always a war declaration on Ocon and the first crash was actually on Pierre (Melbourne) this year yeah Monaco was on Esteban but I think if it was the other way round the Public hate would have never been so hard it would have been "a bold move" and then the theme would have ended so I think this is more of an train everybody is jumping on because its easy to hate on Ocon. Haas have singed the best driver they ever had in their Lineup and I can´t wait to see what he can do with an real engine...

To be fair to him, I think his partnership with Gasly was a lot better than his with Checo - and it wasn't always his fault that he ended up tangling with him. Singapore was one of my reasons why I wasn't sure about Checo going to RB, but everyone was just thinking back to Sakhir... 🤷🏻♀️

I think HASS will be good for him. They obviously want him and he will be the team leader and his teammate is a rookie. He will feel wanted. Plus HASS seems much less toxic than Alpine.
I recently listened to a podcast from the Race, with Uncle Glenn as the host. I don't remember the 2 other people, certainly not Uncle Scott or Uncle Ed. These 2 that I forget are senior presents in F1, and one of them said something about how political Fernando acted during his stint with Felipe at Ferrari, merely due to only 1 occurence, the 2010 AustralianGP, where Felipe held off a P3 from Fernando. After that, he said, Fernando's management immediately 'speaks' to Ferrari to prevent this type of thing from ever happening again, hence explaining how Felipe was almost like driving a different car from Fernando until their last race together. Remember 'Fernando is faster than you'? This was one of the manifestation of that 'speaking' from Fernando's management.
With this in mind, I think Esteban knew he needed to show that back down for nobody, even if the teammate was the Fernando Alonso. It's a correct mentality as I view it, but not at the correct place. If Alpine were actually fighting for a championship, this mentality is a must-have. But Alpine were only fighting for the lower top 5 at best. Teamwork is what needed, not asserting dominance on each other's nerves.

Seriously, he is a very good driver, but I think Haas is his last chance and if he has poor relations with Ollie Bearman, I think Ferrari will crush him like a bug. If however, he gets along well with Ollie he could do quite well there.
To the fans, he is one do the nicest drivers in F1. For example, when he arrived at Liege airport for the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix stayed at the airport for an hour and a half before he left signing for every fan who wanted an autograph and getting a selfie with every fan who wanted a selfie.
Some of the shit isn't even his fault. Spa 2017, Baku 2017, Singapore 2018 were all the fault of Checo terrorism. He only made the mistake of angering Max and Fernando fans, and many of those people are children.
Max fans, Brazil 2018 was SIX YEARS AGO, LET IT GO. Also the only reason Alonso fans are mad is because his perfect record of never losing to a teammate is stained.
I actually think as a driver you underrated him a bit in this video if we follow your logic. If Fernando was at his peak when he was ocons teammate as you say here then him almost matching him is an extremely impressive feat and would put him well past being simply a number 2 driver for a top team and more in the territory of a Carlos sainz to leclerc, who many people describe as a '1.5 driver'. Obviously he's had weaker seasons than his ones with Fernando and it all depends how you rate alonso to judge those peaks but I thought it was worth pointing out.

Ocon beat Alonso, perez and end of the season Daniel. The guy half the season in 2024 with the old spec car. Ocon won F3 in his rookie season and destroyed Verstappen in the same series. Ocon has been unfairly treated and people act like Verstappen was that perfect driver in 2015, he was absolutely a match to Sainz. Verstappen has had luck with him. Verstappen vetoed Sainz for that reason alone. Ocon is hated only hated because he isn't number 2 driver. Ocon wasn't terrible impressive at Force India/Racing Point; and didn't seem to improve against Pérez in his second season. Meanwhile Lance actually had a decent couple of seasons, near matching Massa and getting Williams' only podium of the season in 2017 and then thrashing (an admittedly unimpressive) Sirotkin in 2018. I don't think his dropping for Lance was as unjust as you suggest.
Lance's problem is that he simply isn't improving. If anything he's got *worse* over the last couple of seasons; Ocon meanwhile came back strong enough to keep Alonso honest in '21 and '22.
Given that Perez had more than double his points in 2019, and he’s been annihilated by alonso for 2 years, hindsight says it was unjust.

Well, early on, Seb was not necessarily the nicest guy ever, but he became one of the most beloved driver in the paddock as years passed because he matured as a human being and people liked that.
More like Seb just stopped winning and people started to like him. He was asked a couple of years ago would he do anything differently if he had the multi 21 situation at that moment, and he said no. So basically he has always had that mentality.
