    George honoured Patti with this song - greatly honoured her. She should always hold her head high because she inspired such love.

    This song always makes me melt. Patti was very blessed to be married to George and have such a beautiful song written about her. Despite the fact that their marriage ended badly, with both of them having affairs, they became friends and straightened things out later on in life. In the midst of their divorce and affairs is when George said he didn't write it for her. IMO, he DID originally write it for her, but when going through a divorce are you really gonna admit that you were truly in love??

    I noticed that too and I agree! : ) What I also found very striking is he failed to include, "I Need You" and "You Like Me Too Much." I find it hard to believe that he would just forget to include "I Need You" since it was included in the movie Help. George Harrison - international man of mystery. Seems to me there was a lot more going on behind the man then any of us care to know. He was definitely an enigma.

    The origin of the song was James Taylor (newly signed to Apple) and his then-new tune "Something in the Ways She Moves." George heard the song as James recorded his initial 1968 Apple records debut...may have even sung on it I don't know. I know some Beatles did stuff on that record. Anyway...he liked the line and the rest is history!

    In her autobiography Wonderful Today, Harrison's former wife Pattie Boyd claimed the song was written about her. Harrison downplayed the sentiment, saying it was, in fact, written with Ray Charles in mind.
    "When I wrote it, I imagined somebody like Ray Charles doing it. That's the feel I imagined, but because I'm not Ray Charles, you know, I'm sort of much more limited in what I can do, then it came out like this. It's nice. It's probably the nicest melody tune that I've written."

    Anyone interested in knowing the inspiration for George's songs, I suggest you read his book, "I, Me, Mine." In the book he lists nearly every song he wrote and the inspiration for it. Discover it from the man himself, not second hand. Give George the respect of reading it from his book and not hearing it from someone else. Thank you!

  • @quad1000
    @quad1000 11 років тому

    just to clarify I had heard this several times over the years. It was just the line "There's something in the way she moves" he liked; he didn't rip the song off. The tune is, of course, his own. No harm, no foul!

    George and Pattie was a fantasy. He pursued Joey Heatherton within months of dating Pattie. In fact insiders stated George and Joey were a hot item in the '60's. Another thing learned, Tony Barrow said George married Pattie because of death threats. It was a celebrity marriage and a reason why George treated her so badly. He even said so, that one of his biggest regrets his how badly he treated Pattie, why he neglected her and why he didn't care when Clapton entered the picture.

    It's really odd how so many songwriters refuse to give a straight answer about their songs. Why didn't George just say 'hey, I wrote it for Pattie'? Instead he throws out this rubbish about it being about Ray Charles. Same with John and 'Lucy', Carly and 'You're so Vain' and Dylan with almost everything -- especially 'Visions of Johanna'. Even DECADES later, they still will not tell the truth. Like, who gives a rat's ass .. just be real and get over yourself. Not all are like that of course. Paul Simon will actually tell you truth about his work.

  • @otterj6
    @otterj6 12 років тому

    I agree with you...I think is what Pattie wants people to think for her own pride. I believe it was written for a "Lover" who he couldn't admit to since he was married. A reporter asked him in 1969 if it was written for Pattie. He said, "Probably Pattie, Maybe." It wasn't a definitive yes. If you listen to the lyrics...it is a song about a lover - not wanting to leaver her, how they can be together, when their apart all he has to do is think of her....Not a song written about a wife.

    An alcoholic will go with an alcoholic. Patti and Eric were both alcoholics (Look at her now) Quote "During their marriage, both struggled with alcoholism and Eric had several bouts with drug addictions involving heroin and cocaine. The thing that devastated Pattie was that she could never have children, having had a damaging miscarriage while married to George".

    George said about Something. “Actually, it’s about Krishna. But I couldn’t say he could I ? I had to say she, adding with a twinkle in his eye, or they’d think I was a poof ( British slang for Gay ).
    A reporter once noted his inability to to tell if George was singing about Krishna or a woman. “That’s good” , George replied, “I like that. I think individual love is just a little of universal love…Singing to the Lord, or an individual is, in a way, the same. I’ve done that consciously in some songs”
    ~ from Here Comes The Sun - The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison by Joshua M Greene p. 142

    George said he had no problem with Eric and Pattie being together simply to not look ridiculous in front of the media. I mean if he really didnt care im pretty sure he wouldnt have written/sung songs like 'So Sad', 'Isnt It A Pity', 'So Sad' and 'Bye Bye Love' about his divorce with Pattie. I mean its pretty obvious he was hurt and sad that she has left him.

      Absolutely! If he hadn't cared for Pattie he wouldn't ve waited till 1977 to agree to divorce her. Probably when he knew that Olivia was pregnant. Also, on Christmas day 1974 he dropped round -uninvited- to Eric's place bringing a bottle of whisky. You can see the two of them, sitting side by side on a sofa. George sports his famous perm holding a glass of brandy and looks totally depressed and pissed. "I now realise he might have had nowhere else to go" commented Pattie later on. It was soon after the "Hoarse Tour". Probably he wanted to check on how Eric and Pattie were doing, before deciding what to do with Olivia.

    UA-cam is a public forum. Pattie Boyd is a public figure who wrote a book, does interviews and tours around the globe boasting about being a muse and bringing up time and time again her relationship with a Beatle. It is HER and everyone posting videos about her keeping this historic soap opera shit alive. As a public figure she and her fans must know that not everyone will believe her story or be her fan and she and her fans must expect differing perspectives and opinions.

    Did you read the lyrics for Old Brown Shoe. 3rd line "I WANT A SHORT-HAIRED GIRL who wears it halfway long sometimes." "If you and me should get together." The song seems to be about him in love with a short-haired girl who wears it long sometimes, but they are not together. Pattie never wore her hair short and they were together. Clearly Old Brown Shoe is not about Pattie...but you do know who was a short-haired girl who wore it long sometimes...Yep!

    "Something" is so easy to decipher. Look a man writes a song, everyone, including his wife assumes it's for her. So, he's going to publically say, "Yeah, sure I wrote it for her." He'll tell everyone what they want to hear. George Harrison was a brilliant man, he knew what to say and what not to say and how much. The other thing is George had no bad feelings when Pattie left him for Eric. He was happy for the two of them so there would be no reason to change a story. There was no sour grapes.

  • @109nonnel

    I don't know if reading Georges book will tell the inspirations for all his songs. He claimed he couldn't remember the inspiration for "Think For Yourself". Listen to it and I think you would agree that it would be hard to forget the inspiration for that one.

    Note, Jane Asher kicked Paul to the curb when she caught him with Francie Schwarz. Cyn gave John a divorce when she caught him with Yoko. Pattie tolerated George having an affair with Charlotte Martin in their house, taking Krissy Wood on holiday. She denied George when he asked for a divorce. Pattie couldn't take a hint. He wanted out of the marriage. He even said he wasn't going to pursue because he didn't want a high-profile divorce and pay her money.

    I wouldn't even call Olivia a soulmate. She acknowledges their marriage was often rocky too. He had a hard time controlling him as he often went wayward and had thing for the ladies. She said marriage to him was real hard and she wondered if they would make it. Oliva worked very hard at their marriage.

    There's a twist in this not covered here. The origin, the inspiration, certainly has been attributed to Pattie Boyd, by no less than George himself. However, where did the music, the lyrics, the title come from? Mostly George I think. But it is probably more than coincidental that right at this time the then very young, fledgling singer-songwriter James Taylor was working with the Beatles, past of Apple's finding and developing new talent. JT had a lovely song then called, "Something."

    People who knew the young George says that he always went for a type of short, young, round-faced girl with blonde hair. Pattie was the perfect example of it. Paul tells a story of him trying to pull a girl just like her in Spain, but they didn't speak a common language and she hadn't heard of The Beatles. The band thought it was hilarious.

  • @otterj6
    @otterj6 12 років тому

    I read a statement from Olivia. She said...I know from the outside our marriage looked like a good partnership, but there were many problems... She called George a serial philanderer and had great difficulty keeping him from going wayward. Olivia worked very hard at the marriage and George was lucky to have her. But George Harrison was quite the Free Bird and liked having a nest to perch in every so often then he'd fly off again. Really, no woman can claim him...

  • @Delilah361
    @Delilah361 13 років тому

    When George said he was thinking of Ray Charles, he meant Ray Charles would be much better singing it than George. He was referring to Ray as a fellow recording artist. Patti is a lovely woman and in her book she was very honest about George and Eric Clapton. Both men cheated on her and hurt her but she doesn't hold a grudge. Eric said she is Layla and he wrote "You Look Wonderful Tonight" for her as well. She'd have no reason to lie about George saying he wrote "Something" for her.

    @cherrypop1771 Maybe...who knows. I also read in interview in 1969 when asked if he wrote it for Pattie. George said, "Yeah probably Pattie, Maybe." It wasn't a definite yes. If it was for her why not be honest and say it was? Also I read when Pattie was supprised when he said it wrote for her, because he just recently asked her for a divorce. Personally, I think he wrote for another woman/lover, but he was married. Only George knows for sure. He says no.

    @ldjajdoadijAAAA I agree. I like all of George's songs. I have never understood what songs John, Paul and George Martin thought were so bad back in the early Beatle years. I like them all from 'Don't Bother Me' to 'Savoy Truffle' to 'Something.' All Things Must Pass is perhaps the greatest rock album released since the Beatles split. All those songs and a sense that George's music is not fully appreciated as it should be. At least there are those like us that cherish his music.

    Well Joey Heatherton....was a 60's sex kitten comparable to Ann Margaret. She was an actress, singer and an amazing dancer. (No one could move like her) When asked about her, George even joked once referring to her as a guy and Lennon referred to Joey as "Borris Morris" Apparently she had some code names. I read an interview with Ringo in '64, he said he didn't want to marry Maureen because she was "common'. He wanted a sexy starlet and he got that in Barbara. So I don't think he cheats . Paul sowed his oats in the '60's Linda was the "one" so no. I don't think either Pattie or Olivia was George's one. I believe Joey was the ONE that got away and all I had to do was watch her on Johnny Carson '64 to see she fit George perfectly. They were the match but the cards were stacked against them.

    @cherrypop1771 There is rumor about George/Astrid, but out of respect for Stu, I don't think it went to far, or got too serious. There are some very cozy pictures of the two of them floating around the web. It was Astrid who took some of the most amazing photographs of George for years after Hamburg. @ivana rydim Troll- Olivia SAVED George from a murderous attack by a psychopath risking her own life to do so. She also nursed George through Hepatitis in 1976 and found the acupuncturist who would cure him. She nursed George through his final illness and tried to get him the best care. Jeepers the poor woman has suffered enough without misogynistic idiots like you. And Pattie writes in 'Wonderful tonight' that she was invited to 'Concert for George' but declined. Olivia stayed with George because they LOVED each other- all that is clear from what he said and sang about her (Beautiful Girl, dark Sweet lady, Cheer down, Never get over you) and she says about him

    @cherrypop1771 I think it's kind of shame people trying to own inspiration for this song. I think it does a disservice to George and the song. It's a beautiful song that has a bit of mystery. Kind of reminds me of Beethoven's Immortal beloved, who REALLY inspired Something (Pattie, Charlotte, Maureen, Astrid, Joey) if any woman at all. Personally, my money is on Joey. From what I read, he wasn't serious about Pattie in the beginning, but fell hard and fast for Joey. Again, that's the mystery.

The fact that George was openingly sleeping around on Pattie as early as 1968 with Clapton's ex Charlotte Martin who was living in George's house is proof to me George had little respect for marriage and Pattie. I read once, George tired to sleep with Pattie's sister. I know he was "red blooded," but let's have some discretion.

    George denied from day one this song was written about Pattie. George had many lovers and even was cheating on her 5 months into dating with Joey Heatherton. He was pursuing Joey heatherton really hard in the fall of 1964. Also "Insiders stated George and Joey were a hot item in the '60s" George wasn't really true to Pattie - ever. That's the things with celebrities - some marriages are for the public and then they have private lives and loves. Eric Clapton is the perfect example.

    It was nobodys' fault. It's like trying to blame Yoko for the breakup of the Beatles. Sometimes, whether it be a band, or ANY kind of relationship, sometimes- - when it's over- - it's over. Anytime any relationship becomes more work than pleasure or fun- - It's over. And even though sad, (to some) it's still positive in the long run :-).

She allowed him to smoke himself to an early grave and refused to leave his cheating ass just so she could collect after his death! She didn't invited his family to their wedding and has forbade Pattie from attending the Concert For George. Yoko may have been cheated on, but she stayed to collect. Just like Olivia stayed to collect as well.

    Pattie is a fool for giving up George. I'd give anything-anything in the world to even spend a hour with him.

    @mcasa09 Obviously you don't know enough about either of them or their marriage to come to that conclusion.

    Olivia probably prevented his sister from Missouri to get a dime from his fortune, just like Yoko prevented Julian from getting some of his dad's possessions after his death. I'm not hating on Olivia, but these are things that I do question from time to time. Everybody "goes through" something, but some do have questionable motives or actions even after what they have "gone through." So, don't expect someone like me to revel in the finished product everytime someone paints someone else as a victim or as someone who's "been through" something. For even paint can peel off and showcase the true nakedness of where that paint has been on. Especially when it involves losing a fucking Beatle.

      +Ivana Rydim we don't know that at all- I am deeply suspicious about this story. Olivia made sure that George's two brothers were provided for. And stop trolling- you are very boring and show an ugly and warped mind

    George said he didnt write something for her. he said it was after a frank sinatra song?

    Yeah I get it, George cheated on Pattie with her friends, in their house,while they were dating in '64 with Joey Heatherton. In fact, insiders stated George and Joey were a hot item in the '60's. If a guy has many lovers, it is foolish to assume love songs were written for Pattie, especially since he denied it from the beginning. Something could have been written for Joey Heatherton. There WAS Something in the way Joey moved. They only person saying Something was written for Pattie, is Pattie.

    Regardless of the shitload of songs George had written while still with The Beatles, he was insecure about the songs he wrote. So, he got some guy to write the song with him ALONE, away from the Beatles, even away from Paul's dictatorialism. I think he even admitted to taking the first line from James Taylor's song. He even admitted to taking from other artists and even an entire B-side from another artist. The Chiffons' song was pretty much the most publicized of all the songs he took from.

    @RingoTheBeatles101 He basically neglected her needs in favour of his devotion/ meditation to Hare Krishna movement. Apparently there was a bit of infidelity on his part going on, too. So technically, it was George who drifted away first.

    No.Not at all. I heard he actually the nicest of all the Beatles and he would talk to pretty much everyone he met. He was a day dreamer. His mind was always elsewhere and would get caught up in his thoughts. You can kind of see it in press conference interviews, Paul, John or Ringo would always field questions, George always seemed distracted.

    All I have to say is , she had George and Eric .....She let them both go on the fly. I am not bashing her as I was not there but if you want to speak of regrets she has to have them because of her decisions. Now she is very alone. She recently was in Aspen I was at a private party. She was a mess....
