First fire I was assigned to was to deliver supplies to the fire camp. I arrived in the evening and was put to work right away until 2200. I was then told to be back at work at 0600. In the afternoon I asked what time will I take the truck back to Olympia. They said you are assigned to a wildfire, you are a resource on this fire until you are released. “I don’t know what DAY you will be released let alone the time. “ I had no experience with fires until that 1985 fire. Now I am retired from wildfires after 30+ years and I have had a lot of experience plus training thousands of others including but not limited to Yakama Nation, National Guard 2x , inmate fire crews, annual Fire Guard Schools. My “red card” and IQS has lots of qualified ICS positions listed. Including Fireline Explosives and High Angle Fire Crew plus 10 years on Incident Management Teams.
Going into my Rookie season here in a few short weeks. Been soaking up knowledge from your channel as well as any other source I can get my hands on for preparation. Appreciate the channel and the job you've done and do. Looking forward to make a difference this season.
Same here buddy! Class training/pack test is end of April for us, field training is early May. I'm quitting a stable secure job I've held for the last 10 years to start something completely new, and very useful. Here's to making a difference🤝
Same let's get it brothers and sisters God Bless y'all Heros in the making, I want to come back in a year and fill on my progress 💪🙏🙌 I'm already honored on being quadrant boss❤️🔥❤️🔥
Well I was a wildland firefighter 1975 to 1985 back when there was a lit of limited resources. I thought about writing a book about my experience as a hotshot and engine grunt as was as loading air tankers
I was on the Angeles national forest in California and worked at several stations. Hots shots were bearbdivide and fox tanker base in Lancaster. Also worked Valyermo , mill creek and monte Cristo
I’ve been trying to get on with a veterans fire corps crew since I got out in 2021 still no luck I apply to every single one and always get an interview but ever time I get that email saying I haven’t been selected for it
Ah, I am so sorry! If you are getting selected for an interview, that tells me your resume is good. However, you may want to reflect on your interview skills. Can you walk me through a little how the interview goes?
@@wildlandfirefit do your darn tough socks have cushion or or full cushion. I bought a couple pare of the mid weigh with cushion. I like the ones I have as long as it is double socked. I am using wright socks with darn tough to see how I like them this year. I am taking my first ever pack test tomorrow.
@@wildlandfirefit I meant to say to practice for 3 mile test. But I'll go by feel , if I can do a mile in it and decent time , I feel like it put me in great shape....but any advice you have I'll be sure to listen. Thank for awesome channel!!

@@wildlandfirefitHey Ronni- That one topic would be great Live or longer video.
Would love to chat with you sometime about your experiences and if I should pursue this idea. Be safe God bless
I do have questions about eating. I am 135Ld and need 4 to 5 meals a day. how much room in your pack do you have? enough for a good amount of snacks?
Oh yeah, you will have plenty of room. I always kept an MRE in the bottom of my pack and then had a bunch of snacks
@@wildlandfirefit how do the MRE's compare to freeze dried meals. are MRE's quicker to prepare.

Sounds like each day could either be really really busy or kinda steady at times
Ya, it's dynamic for sure
@@wildlandfirefit nice
I just got a 80lb weight vest for 3mile test , do you think that's sufficient? It's adjustable as well
Oh yes, that will be plenty of weight! You are starting out with a lower weight than 80lbs I hope

so your not fighting fires any longer? dang.... I agree with sleep is important for mental health.
So if the off season you do trail maintenance or how do you manage the forest conditions when there is no fire?
I just got my boots on Wednesday I’m trying to break in the boot but I have a flat foot do you recommend that I get an aftermarket insole
Yes!
Just like the military lol
Yes 😂
Q? Why did you quit firefighting
I went into the military
Sounds pretty crappy
It has it's moments
