When my dad died in 1985, my mom had this song played for his funeral. When she passed in 1998, I had it sung at her funeral. The song is one of hope in the joy of attaining Heaven, but I can never sing it without crying, remembering my parents. Thank you for sharing the background of the song and the writer. I enjoyed this video and sang along with you with tears on my cheeks. 😊
I was singing music at a adult Senior Center a few years back. Someone requested I'll fly away at the end. There was a lady in the crowd just passing through said she was the niece of the composer Albert Brumley!
We just drove through Powell this morning and passed the music school! If we blinked we would have missed it😄. Been singing this song most of my life. How cool to learn the history. Thanks Luke!
I occasionally play organ at funerals when our best organist isn't available, but all I got asked to play last time and the time before was "All things bright and beautiful".
First became familiar with this on a Bluegrass Gospel album about 35 years ago. I played it at my first husbands funeral - he crashed the plane he was flying. This song gave me joy knowing he flew to a better place. My 5 year old granddaughter loves singing the chorus.😊
I grew up in an Assembly of God church in the U.S. and we’ve sung this one through the years. One of my Uncle Charles’ favorites and he has already taken his “flight” to Glory four years ago.
This song always makes my feet tap. We still sing this in church, it is a promise to those who have accepted Christ as their savior that one day we will fly away. I really enjoy the performance, it ends your video with encouragement.
This song was a favorite of my dads. Twenty years ago as he was dying he would sing phrases of this old gospel song. Of course it was sung at his funeral.
Thank you for sharing. This is my all time favorite hymn. It takes me back to the 60s as a child. The little block church with the sawdust floor, where I first felt the Holy Spirit.
Dear Pastor Luke. I have fallen in love your channel and am thankful for the many "classic hymns" that you have given story to and why it was written. Since I found faith in Christ though sadness is all around me yet I can say that in Christ: It is joy unspeakable and filled with glory since my Jesus came into my heart! The songs here fill my heart with gladness; and, I look forward to that day when I will fly away, Oh glory, I'll fly away. I will cast my glittering crown in thankful praise to Jesus, my song, my Everything. The Joy of my life, my late wife who passed away on March 25th., 2014 on her late mother's birthday I will meet again at Jesus's feet! And I look forward to that time when I will fly away and meet you, Pastor, and we will have jamming sessions, the music of the heart, both the melody and harmony of the soul that we can do at times together for all eternity! Oh glorious the day when I fly away!
It seems I've always sung this song. I did not know it was written so recently. I think I thought it was sometime in the 19th century. I hope we sing it for a long time because at my stage in this life it brings me comfort. Be a blessing.
Thank you for this! Love to harmonize with this--very popular with choirs and musical congregations. This was a great song for previous generations, who wouldn't see Jesus until after they died. But we are the last generation, the generation that will not pass away, so I change the chorus to "in the sky, Hallelujah by and by, I'll fly away!" Looking forward to the Rapture and resurrection of the church soon and very soon! End Time prophecy is now coming true, so it won't be long.
Methodist Church, Jamaican funerals this is one of the significant songs they will sing at the wake and burial. My great grandmother and father would sing this song! I thought they were going to die but I was a very young child.
😊 Love it. I have a friend who did die of a fever, Jesus smiled, took her up then sent her back. Not her time, things still to fulfill in His Name Psalm139 v 16
I grew up Pentecostal, but ended up Episcopalian..that is... Anglican as an adult. While I was in seminary for The Episcopal Church a group of us organized a gospel quartete and sang at the seminary talent show. We sang it for three years running. It was a hit. For weeks after we sang it I would hear classmates humming or singing it to themselves It is a GREAT Gospel Hymn. I trust by God's grace to fly away into that heavenly kingdom revealed by the death and resurrection of The Lord.
@@woodmason We used to sing, in place of "when I die" -"I may not have to die" liked singing it that way, looking for the rapture, Harpazo 🎉 maybe today ❣️
I've always loved this song thank you brother Luke God bless you❤ I love to hear you sing brother Luke you have a beautiful voice you are truly blessed😊
Death is actually a reminder of sin that’s why we mourn. This song brings hope that because of the sin around us we die but through Jesus we are able to live forever.
8:00 Really edified when you took the pains to include a balanced perspective by pointing out that the lyrics of this song was slightly one-sided because it was "glorifying death". Romans 5:17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Dude I just heard this song through the movie Greater I wonder if it’ll hit hard like a brick perhaps during a ceremonial service cause it’s lyrics are sweet n beautiful.😀
The first version I heard was from a jars of clay CD called redemption songs, it has quite a few beautiful tunes on it and is different from any of they’re other albums
To this born-again believers' ears, this song is pure delight. Thank you, brother. See you and all believers one day soon. Maranatha.

This has been sung at almost every funeral I've ever attended in my life.
I occasionally play organ at funerals when our best organist isn't available, but all I got asked to play last time and the time before was "All things bright and beautiful".

Entirely new to me, but what a lovely old hymn. I'm going to have to go at learning it, I might play during communion at our Saturday night mass.
Thank you for the stories behind the hymns I love
Thank you for sharing. This is my all time favorite hymn. It takes me back to the 60s as a child. The little block church with the sawdust floor, where I first felt the Holy Spirit.
I’ve heard this song since I was young…by bluegrass players and singers…and folk songs that I grew up in the early 60s and 70s
