As a boy, son of Missionary parents in Africa , this song was the cry of my young heart….. I knew the scriptures well…you could say I was cradles in the scriptures but yet was afraid that I would miss salvation. Nothing shook that fear until one night at 15 yrs old I finally gave up trying to have enough faith or the right kind of faith and on my knees told God that I was giving up and throwing myself on his mercy. I rose from my knees knowing he had saved me! This song has a special meaning for me. That night was 57 years ago and He has never let me down since then.
The Lord bless you, Luke. Gospel singer Fred Johnson, who sang for many years with Jimmy Swaggart, had recorded this song on one of his albums. Thank you for this review!
One of my favorites, even from a child at I believe age 5...now being 80 years old....a lot of times when people criticize it is because of jealousy rearing it's ugly head ....This song and it's words are timeless. We all need it so bad... So clear the heart here! 😊
This is one song we often sang at night for an alter call, it was one of my favourites. Some of the words of the second & third verses are a little bit different to what we sang but that is common I have noticed between denominations. I love Fanny J Crosby songs. She was a gifted lady. This one always reminds me of King David when he cried out to the Lord not to take the Holy Spirit from him. I often sang it asking the Lord to help my unbelief. I think that most of those critics of her were jealous of her songs but think about it when you cannot see, then you have nothing coming between you & the Lord to disrupt your concentration. At least that is what I find in the night hours when I can't sleep as there is no distraction to my eyes to take my attention away from the One I am talking to when I can't sleep. Blessings & thank you for bringing all these old songs of my youth in the 1950/60s.
Luke I look so forward to your hymns and am sharing them far and wide . This eve I was reading the story of the Lord Jesus’ healing of the woman with the issue of blood while on His way to raise Jairus’ daughter from the dead . The woman must have been utterly desperate to reach Him but was blocked by the jostling crowd who were no doubt noisily pushing and shoving . ….. “do not pass me by while on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by “ must have been her heart’s cry . What a beautiful old hymn , thank you for reminding me of it . God bless your ministry .
The more you grow in Love, the more profoundly simple and praiseworthy! This morning sunrise at the lake, this hymn started blooming in my heart and memory. I'm 67 suffering in physical pain and loss, yet everything and circumstance must Hope in our Resurrection and God's Lovely intentions...... I UA-camd the title and found this heavenly gift. I Love you my brother and your offering here has made me rich......Bro Mark
Love Fanny's songs. This reminds me of Mark 5:25-34, the woman who had been bleeding for 12 years and as Jesus passed, she reached out to touch his garment. Jesus stopped and asked who touched him. When the woman answered he told her that her faith has healed her. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering
This was one of my my mom's favourite songs , she died 2 years ago in my arms at the age of 93, I was devasted, still healing...Thank you for bringing back precious memories, am glad I stumbled upon your channel.God bless you.❤
Sorry to hear of your loss. Correct theology or not, we used to sing this all the time as well, when I was growing up, and always, found it powerful and moving. My Best. Out.
A beautiful song. My brother used to play this on the guitar when I was a kid. He was older than me. Sadly he passed away a few years ago. I was looking for a version of this on video. I happen to find your video. You sound like a very Christian good person. Thank you for sharing this. My sister is going to Johns Hopkins Hospital tomorrow Friday, Jan 5, 2024. Her name is Brenda Bonsall she lives in Elkton, Maryland in the USA. Could you please keep her in your prayers? I truly need her in my life. I am the youngest son of eleven children. Sadly all of them have passed on except my sister and one other brother and myself. That brother is fighting cancer now. His name is Franklin Charles of Elkton Maryland in the USA. Please keep him in your prayers also. Thank you for everything. I will look forward to your videos in the future. God bless you.
I really sympathize with you brother. I can imagine how heartbreaking it would be for you to loose your lovely siblings. Have faith in Jesus. There's nothing too hard for God to do. I pray your ailing sibling be healed. God bless you and keep you strong.
@@dr.samkuink4410 I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please keep the prayers going. I have lost several siblings the last few years. He is the only brother I have left. Thank you so much.

Sooner or later we all lose people in our lives, because man is transient on this Earth. God is eternal, and He is with us until the end of our days, if we put our Faith in Him. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I love and enjoys listening to Fanny Crosby songs. I believe she wrote these song with great convictions and annointing. Our God is great. Being a Christian is the best and greatest experience in this life.
Hi Luke, my husband and I love your ministry with going through the story and playing the music with the old hymns. You have blessed gift in presenting the true Gospel 💝
Lovely! Joni Errikson Tada has sung it. Her application of this is Pool of Bethesda. Joni could picture herself with those their on mats waiting for a healing.
This is my most cherished of all hymns. The story of how she came to write it is so inspiring! I sing it outside in the mountains where I live. It lifts me when I feel overwhelmed and unworthy.
She was not writing poems to critics, she was writing poems to her Lord. And his opinion is the only one that matters. God likes simple heart felt prayer, and that’s what she did!
I work at Focus on the Family, and for our Friday team devos we have been watching these videos lately. Everyone on the team really enjoys what you are sharing here and it is an encouragement and great start to our day. Thank you for sharing these!
This was used often as an invitation song where I grew up in Virginia, US. I have always loved the words, especially about the Spring of all my comfort, more than life to me.
This is the Power of the Hymns I've learned from infancy. Let the church be the church and bring our hymns back in worship and adoration to The Almighty.
Puts me in mind of a wee chorus “ Zaccheus was a very little man, a very little man was he, he climbed into a sycamore tree , for the Saviour he wanted to see . And when the Saviour passed that way, he looked into the tree, and said “ Zaccheus , you come down “ cos I’m coming to your hose for tea ! “
We sing this every Sabbath as we kneel before the congregational prayer. Her songs are an inspiration to many. She wrote to bring honor and glory to God not for mens praises.
Thank you Luke. As I have mentioned before, I grew up in an unbelieving home so all the hymns I know I learned through studying on my own as part of my time with the Lord in the mornings. Now I am at a church that sings from the hymnal. This song is like an old friend. It is one of the first I learned. I’d really like to share, with permission, some modern new hymn style worship music that you may or may not be aware of. If you are open to that, where may I share that? I know UA-cam doesn’t like links. Thanks again!
Thank you Luke, for your work in sharing your Friday Classics , “Story Behind the Song” Series! 👍 I remember singing many of these hymns in a small Methodist Church. One of my favorite writers is Fanny Crosby. Love your piano playing and performance of the hymns featured. Excellent format! These classic hymns are not part of worship in our modern church services.

A most beautiful hymn honored and well played in this video. I can somewhat understand questioning the idea of Jesus passing by anyone in sincere need, however, when someone is in a place of desperate need perhaps even feeling unworthy, this could be a very natural and heartfelt plea. Indeed it would seem quite Biblical. Like Fanny Crosby, in scripture we see a blind person making a similar heartfelt plea when told Jesus was "passing by". The story is found in Luke 18:37-42 "As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. And hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought to him. And when he came near, he asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.” Just as a child calls for the help or attention of a parent it is comforting sometimes to call out in our time of need "Jesus please see me even as I am and have mercy."
I think there is a misconception about that scripture.. because when cited, people fear god's wrath though they came to redemption. So they are saved and NOTHING can pluck them Out! No one! No sin! It is finished. The verse is for those who reject the saving grace. THEY of course have No excuse! It is a warning to accept Jesus as Saviour
Like there is nothing like simply, appreciating the hymn for what it is and for what it does, and allow the Spirit to do the rest. We used to sing this all the time in the Salvation Army church I grew up in and always, found it very, powerful and moving.
Hard to imagine telling Christ not to pass us by while He was hanging on the cross…no…it is us…we are the ones who pass Him by, over and over: Rom 10:20-21 “But Isaiah is very bold and says: “I was found by those who did not seek Me; I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me.” But to Israel he says: “All day long I have stretched out My hands To a disobedient and contrary people.”
You should cover the song "Is my name written there". I just recently found this song and it was an interesting story on how I found it. I love it, and I can't read the second verse without tears.
Thank you for your words that we are important. I fell into that trap that I was not important enough for God to hear my prayer. God hears all our prayers. God does answer prayers in different ways, not how we expect them to be answered. We reject God. Humble is the key word. I am blessed God lead me to your channel for Friday classical hymns.
The fact is that in the past we were lead to believe that, being humble and feeling inferior is sort of the same thing. What taught me differently, Psalm 8 and also Christ's "spelled out", "love your neighbour as you love yourself". We are God's precious creations and to think of ourselves as inferior and worth loving, is in fact a sin. Thanks.
Beautiful. I learned it in my childhood. I am 78 and I don’t like most new music. I believe that songs should be sung before the throne. If not why bother.
To those who scoff at the Line “While on others thou art calling, Do not pass me by.” Hymns and prayers often incorporate our lived experience, if you have never felt like God was blessing others but ignoring you in your hour of need, I suppose you have never struggled with the waves of doubt while you walk by faith.
It came to mind as i asked for prayer to have a more gentle spirit like Corrie ten Boom when i deal with unthinking, non-biblical oeople who consider themselves Christian. It is much more than flag waving and apple pie. It is sooo much more and the opposite of some songs and militant beliefs. I find myself impatient and angered, which repells foolish "believers." I want to love them back to the truth, not stampeded them with outrage for their unbiblical beliefs and rantings and hatred. It starts with the stick in my own eye. I lack that humility and patience great saints of God have had. If i cling to His cloak, with great contrition for my arrogance, perhaps He will give a miracle and soften my heart and teach me how to teach others gently rather than being angry with them. So, i sing...
Another song I've heard/sang all my life. The story of the song I've known differs from yours, but it does not matter. I enjoyed it until I heard the questions regarding the theology. That said the sentiments are such I'm sure we have all felt. Still a beautiful hymn.

My impression on the lyric is that I may have come close to committing the unpardonable sin so I plead with HIM not to pass me by.

I learned the song in Afrikaans as "Gaan my nie verby o Heiland"
Fanny Crosby is my absolutely favorite hymn writer. I greatly disagree with the critique that her songs are not quality.
It is a kind of SWING RYTHUM not strait four four IT GOES Pass------- Me Not O Gentle Sav---ior--hear my umbel cry ---etc.
I'm tired to be humble it's not real... you people are living in a bubble... when you get old its wishful thinking. Life told me another story
Thanks
