  • This is the first "modern classic" in this series! I always thought this song was from back in 1800s, but then I learned that it was in the early 2000s that Keith Getty and Stuart Townend wrote it. This is surely one of the most in depth and thoughtful songs about the supremacy of Christ.

    LYRICS:
    1. In Christ alone my hope is found,
    He is my light, my strength, my song;
    This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
    Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
    What heights of love, what depths of peace,
    When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
    My Comforter, my All in All,
    Here in the love of Christ I stand.
    2. In Christ alone! - who took on flesh,
    Fullness of God in helpless babe.
    This gift of love and righteousness,
    Scorned by the ones He came to save:
    Till on that cross as Jesus died,
    The wrath of God was satisfied -
    For every sin on Him was laid;
    Here in the death of Christ I live.
    3. There in the ground His body lay,
    Light of the world by darkness slain:
    Then bursting forth in glorious day
    Up from the grave He rose again!
    And as He stands in victory
    Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
    For I am His and He is mine -
    Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
    4. No guilt in life, no fear in death,
    This is the power of Christ in me;
    From life’s first cry to final breath,
    Jesus commands my destiny.
    No power of hell, no scheme of man,
    Can ever pluck me from His hand:
    Till He returns or calls me home,
    Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

    This is my very favorite modern hymn! We sang it at my father's funeral because we wanted everyone who attended to hear the truth of the gospel. I am so glad the writers refused to let it be watered down by changing the words. It is entirely biblical and true, and because of that, it is powerful.

      This is a wonderful hymn. My husband died in 2002 but he loved this hymn and sang it very enthusiastic ally, especially "bursting forth in glorious day...", with hands raised at the top of his voice. It was the obvious choice for his funeral. Thank you for this video so uplifting & inspiring. It's a hymn for every occasion, not only funerals !

    These wonderful lyrics go so well with the tune! The climax of the lyrics corresponds exactly to the climax of the music. I love the contrast between "heights of love" and depths of peace" . And again the contrast in the line: fullness of God in helpless babe. Christ is not a whimp, "He stands in victory". Because of Him "sin lost his grip on me." He is my Cornerstone, my solid ground. I love this line: From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny "

    You are gospel centric! You preach a cross-centric message in both the hymns and scriptures you exegete! I m enraptured by these great truths which you exalt! Thank you! I am drawn, yay mesmerized, by the doctrines of the glorious grace of God found in the cross of Christ so eloquently proclaimed in these homilies which you give with such penetrating insight. Jesus is magnified and the love of God, made undeniably clear.

    The first time I heard this hymn was as the theme for the lives of a couple getting married! They wanted this to be their vow to God, and to one another. I'd never heard it and was stunned it was a newer hymn! My church does sing it in New Hampshire, USA.

    I had no idea "In Christ Alone" was written so recently? The tune sounds Celtic perhaps that is why I thought it older. The lyrics are so powerful and convicting. Well, I am pleased to be proven wrong. With the right devotional and serious believer musicians songs glorifying God can still be written.

    Another husband and wife band you should check out is Phatfish or Lou Fellingham. They wrote some fantastic modern hymns. As an American, it is amazing the amount of classical Christian hymns you in the United Kingdom keep churning out. We sing many in our church and most are shocked how recent the songs actually are!

    Now the song will be in my head the rest of the day! I agree with the writers of this hymn that many of the new songs are not as in depth as the older ones, and rely on repetition instead of verses to include the whole gospel story. Are they praising God? Yes, but could be better.

    Luke, we sing it at St Andrews Presbyterian church in NSW all the time as it is one of our favourites. I can never get through the song without emotion especially when we sing that line - the wrath of God was satisfied!! To me it is the most crucial part of the verse. I am set free in Christ alone. I knew that Stuart had written it in 2001 as I liked his songs & I also followed the Getty's as I have a lot of Irish in my heritage & find the music to my taste!! 😂 We sang this last Sunday along with a lot of my other old favourites. I would also recommend Sovereign Grace music from the US to you as well as City Alight and Emu music from Australia as they all write deep meaningful songs that we love to sing in our church. I attend the family service & so most of our songs are modern with a sprinkling of hymns & a kid's song spot after our kids talk which the adults love so that even when the kids are at camp we still like to hear them!! 🤣🤣🤣 I have heard that the PCA in the US are very liberal which we in Australia definitely ARE NOT!!

    • @josephburgess3972
      @josephburgess3972 25 днів тому

      There actually are different sects within sects in a lot of churches here in America. It is kind of weird that we have to read up about a church ahead of going there. Lots of liberal theology in many. I belong to a church that is Reformed but independant from Presbyterian, Baptists, and Lutherans, but I think we have people from each background.

    In Christ Alone confirmed my faith in my dear Lord Jesus. It was a song which I sang non - stop when I was saved. Also, I think Kirsten Getty Keith's wife, is a niece of the great John Lennox. Keith Getty's music is beautifully Celtic. Stuart Townend has written some wonderful songs. There is a Hope is one of my favourites.
    I have a love for Celtic music because of my Irish heritage. There is a very wonderful selection from Northern Ireland's Robin Mark also and one of the most stunning songs from the Irish Republic sung by Rita Connolly and featuring St. Patrick's Breastplate, The Deer's Cry...oh wow it's so lovely and written by her husband, Shaun Davey. Perhaps you would like to look at it.

      Your words "Every day could be our final day" reminded me of an old song by Thomas Ken. He called it Morning Hymn. I call it The Longer Doxology. Other call it Awake, my Soul, and With the Sun. In the second stanza he wrote, "Each present day thy last esteem."
      Awake, my soul, and with the sun
      Thy daily stage of duty run;
      Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
      To pay thy morning sacrifice.
      Thy precious time misspent, redeem,
      Each present day thy last esteem,
      Improve thy talent with due care;
      For that great day thyself prepare.
      By influence of Light divine
      Let thy own light to others shine.
      Reflect all Heaven’s propitious ways
      In ardent love, and cheerful praise.
      In conversation be sincere;
      Keep conscience as the noontide clear;
      Think how all seeing God thy ways
      And all thy secret thoughts surveys.
      Wake up and lift thyself, my heart,
      And with the angels bear thy part,
      Who all night long unwearied sing
      High praise to the eternal King.
      All praise to Thee, who safe has kept
      And hast refreshed me while I slept
      Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake
      I may of endless light partake.
      Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;
      Disperse my sins as morning dew.
      Guard my first springs of thought and will,
      And with Thyself my spirit fill.
      Direct, control, suggest, this day,
      All I design, or do, or say,
      That all my powers, with all their might,
      In Thy sole glory may unite.
      I would not wake nor rise again
      And Heav’n itself I would disdain,
      Were Thou not there to be enjoyed,
      And I in hymns to be employed.
      Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
      Praise Him, all creatures here below;
      Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;
      Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

    As a church organist, I love to belt out this hymn. The tune is a bit reminiscent of Slane (Lord of all Hopefulness) but it's different. The clever bit is the octave jump in the second half of the verse that gives the song a bit of drama and adds emphasis to the words.

Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful hymns each week. Even though I know and have sung most of these for years, it is so powerful to go through them as you do each week, bringing out their beauty and power -- power that derives from the all-encompassing beauty and power of the God who inspired them! May God continued to bless you and your ministry.

    This song presented me with quite a puzzle. It seemed as dear and familiar as many of the songs that I had sung in various church choirs or perhaps as dear and familiar as many of the hymns I had sung in worship. But when I did a cursory internet research on it, I discovered that none of my choirs could have sung it, nor, given my sporadic church ettendance in the last 2 decades, I can't ascribe my familiarity and love for this song to congregational singing. So the puzzle remains, and so does my love for this hymn. Mr. Powell, this is a wonderful channel, and I am profoundly grateful.

    God's second Adam...His son caused us to stand before the Holy Father, perfect and complete, in Him, to reverse what came down on us in the 1st Adam. Not only forgiven but as though we had never sinned. No sin..no guilt...He took it all. How can we not love Him and want to obey Him? The Father is love. The wrath of God is not against His sinner children. It's against the sin that is destroying His children.
    Our God is a consuming fire the Bible says. He is the unquenchable fire in the gospels. He is mighty and powerful. If He loses any of His children because they can't stand in His presence, He will weep. He is able to save us to the uttermost.
    The deadly wound that the little horn power received who reigned from 538 to 1798 AD is almost healed. The daughters who left the mother are sighning alliances, going back to the mother. Rev. 17:5. Then all hell cuts loose...verse 6.He is coming soon. If we don't know our Bibles....we will be deceived. The Bible and the Bible alone is our GPS.
