Hey Joshua, you should start a series called "But Simple" where you simplify extravagant dishes so regular home cooks can make them at home without spending the entire day in the kitchen. Love your stuff, keep it up!
The Best Idea
pls
This would be so perfect.
That's impossible Josh only knows how to be extra.
Yep I second (or 6th or 7th) this. doesn't matter, it's a good idea.
Those buns look amazing. Would be great for some lobster rolls.
I’m not wearing my glasses, so when i first clicked i though this was a Lobster Roll video lol
@@faisalaldahlawi6560 lol same
They're New England Hot Dog Rolls. They're for hot dogs. They work well for lobster rolls too.
@@mackal and as somebody from New England now in the midwest, its nice to see a simple recipe for them because I can't buy them here and well..... there is no substitution lol
@@larryarcher8533 Try near the seafood. I was discussing them with someone that lives outside of NE when I learned about this being a thing and he said they sell them with the seafood where he lives :P
I would consider this "but better" bc sure overall the price can be cheaper, but it's balanced out by the amount of time one needs to take to make the recipe (even just the sausage itself) let alone the specific "optional" instruments listed. I think time needs to be included on "cheaper" because it's not just money that goes into cooking but also time/patience
the real but cheaper is to get the hotdogs at Costco and then make your own toppings lol
Imagine doing this in a batch and freezing.... It's fine where it is.
Work smarter, not harder.
Also consider hotdogs are made by the billion already and so are buns there's. Absolutely fuck all stopping them not filling it up with chemical bullshit. Using spices like he does here, they just don't because capitalists are greedy c**ts
So make your own channel doing a proper but cheaper then
@@ericingham3343 Or... (and hear me out on this one) OR, you *could* let people leave constructive criticism and feedback in an open comment forum on the channel who's owner actually takes comments like this into consideration. Instead of expecting everyone who suggests a change do it themselves.
and the cost of the energy
Hey Josh, I just wanna thank you for creating your videos, you've been one of my inspiration throughout my cooking life, as a student chef in college rn, your videos have been a very big help!
I LOVE how, while josh is talking, Kendrick is next to him clearly in his own piece of heaven while eating 🤣 you guys are awesome!
Pondering glizzy
Contemplating hot dog
Etc.

I was just about to comment this exact same thing but you beat me to it, so you get a like.
He’s looking back on his life and regretting not putting mayo on every hotdog he’s ever eaten. While also having the best dog of his life. It’s beautiful
Yo, this is a great way to use up my leftover sheep intestines, Prague seasoning #2, hotdog emulsifying powder, sausage stuffing attachment and meat grinder. Thanks!
Man has jokes 😂
Geezuz wept
i can’t tell if this is sarcastic or not and because of that this is hilarious
How'd they turn out?
I love how you make so much from scratch but I'll never do it myself. lol! This looks fantastic! I might try to make the relish. That's easy enough.
Love your videos, love your book, cant wait for the next one. Keep it up man!
At one point, I am sure that Josh will Ask us to breed the animals we cook for extra flavour
"So first you want to incubate your chicken egg for 20 to 21 days"
”Im serious about this. This isnt something you skip”
No you idiot! You just killed the last of the breeding stock!!!!
Funny stuff man!
I love how Kendrick is just trying to live his life and Josh tries everything ti bring him onscreen and make life difficult 😂
Kendrick was looking like he was having an existential crisis over that dog at the end and like he wasn’t even mad about it. Hey, you might get drug onscreen, but there’s free food, and it’s incredible.
I mean Josh gives the people what they want.... More Kendrick.
wait my name is Kendrick wth
Kendrick's face at 7:36 of eating pure humble pie is so good.
SO good! Excellent video. Thanks!!!
The inclusion of the crew is fire. Their reactions make it more real as the audience can't be there. They seem pretty honest about it all too
I love how Joshua's crew is so great at acting out additional comedic stunts, they seem like a great team. And I just freakin' love Kendrick.
I will always and forever love the crew
Didn't even think such an amazing dish had to be done as 'But Cheaper' but I won't question it. Love the effort put into every aspect of this!
This was more a "But Better" imo. I mean it's cheaper if you don't count your time plus about 2000 bucks of equipment. Snarky comments aside, I love cooking, I will definately try this out!
Lol. This video drove me nuts. Who has hours and hours to make a hot dog? Absolutely ridiculous and Im saying this as a fan.
So much this! Just even the time investment. Lets take two days to make a hotdog.
It's only "But Cheaper" if you compare it to super inflated prices at a sports stadium.
And he didn't even make his own mayo, ketchup, and mustard. I mean after all that effort... lol.
And it's only cheaper if you are making an industrial quantity of hot dogs.
The video was fun and interesting to watch but no one's going to make this.
His recipes are getting more impossible to replicate xD
quality of his videos is getting worse lately
Good point. While fun to watch these are no longer remotely practical for the average home cook.
When he messes with something so industrialized as hot dogs it's hard to have everything you need to imitate them, sadly :(.
Yeah I came here to see if they would save money but this is definitely not for the time cruncher or penny pincher. I’m about to unsubscribe here in a minute if it doesn’t improve and actually does what the title suggest.
@@venom74799
He's making hotdogs...what could he possibly do to speed up the sausage-making process? Same with the buns. Just buy hotdogs from the store of you're that bothered, they're not that expensive.
Straight up legendary with the tweaks and make simple things great
$30 meat grinder from harbor freight. Ive done a few batches of buy one get one free sale chuck, pork shoulder, and chicken. It paid for itself within one 15 lb batch compared to pre ground. Vacuum sealed and froze it, stocks me up for weeks to months at a time. Great value.
It was great seeing you on Friday. It seemed rushed but that's understandable. I'm glad I had my book for you to sign and I hope you weren't overworked. 😁✌
I have no doubt this tastes amazing, it looks fantastic. However, I have nowhere near the time or energy to do this entire thing from start to finish. I'll just pay the extra $0.50 and go to Costco lol 😅
I completely agree, Josh does get a little overboard with these, but hey! That's why we watch him, isn't it? I mean, if you have access to a good bakery and butchers (or are fine with whatever your local store has), you can cut down the prep time by like 90%.
@@xyrthor 💯 I love these because I trust Josh's judgment and while some things I will never make myself, I like knowing what the premium standard is so I can make informed choices when I buy things like sausages or bread in the store.
Hey he said cheap not quick! Gotta put in some work to make up for the money saved.
* + the membership fees
@@Real28 you don't need a membership to go in and buy from the food stand area. At least not in Canada
My lord, mouth is watering for some of Josh's double glizzy action
I love your content and your crew
I love that, in order to make this the way Josh did, you have to count on Barter with a butcher, as well as hundreds of dollars in equipment. Oh, and you have to make 80+ hot dogs to get the price just right. Fun to watch, though, lol.
It's not that expensive really. It's $400.... like... how much is your iPhone or android smart phone? How much is your car? How much is your mortgage? Or rent payment? Like... honestly, put into perspective of all of the things we buy, it isn't that much money. Especially considering that it's a one time purchase, not like a car or a phone or laptop or iPad etc. That is VERY expensive and we all pay extra in interest for all of these things. And your complaining about a kitchenaid that's a little less than a flat screen TV? That most of us have multiple of.... I mean... I do understand, it's NOT cheap. But, considering everything else out for sale on thr market right now, I mean the God dang thing is cheaper an an xbox!!! Come on people. It's not thay expensive!!! You pay more for a PS5! Etc. For reals.... like.... perspective! That is all.
@@fuzyfuzfuz2 true but who eats 80+ hot dogs
@@alexblanco7494 you don't. You freeze them and then eat a few at a time :) though, I will say, even over a year I do NOT eat 80+ hot dogs a year. So, point well made!
@@fuzyfuzfuz2 I eat at least four dogs in one meal
I doubt I'll ever make my own hotdogs from scratch but I'm glad a straightforward tutorial like this exists in case I ever get the urge to go big and buy a grinder with attachments. Good stuff.
Your recipies don't disappoint. Best dawg i've had in my life.
Looks amazing!
Bruh this is litterally the most expensive hot dog i have ever seen😂😂 looks good though
I'd love to see you attempt to do a Chicago-style hot dog. I'm curious to see what you'd do with it.
you are an absolute legend
Nice "rock to fakie" by the butter at 6:18 . Steez ma dude!
Yes papa josh has a new video
Papa and his team putting in the WORK lately! stuffing sausages and homemade buns in one episode!!
I was not ready for that level of ✨violence✨ at the beginning
I will try these out. They are probably cheaper then stadium hot dogs but for sure they will be way better. Keep up the great Job Joshua! 👍🏻😀
I remember Aramark selling hot dogs for $1 at the Royals game. The hot dogs were rotten and the buns were moldy. They're statement after the game stated, "What do you expect for $1?" I expect what you made Josh!
From my one and only experience with their coffee, I think a more accurate statement would have been "What do you expect from Aramark?"
I regularly get hot dogs from Sheetz. They’re $1 each for 2. They’re a little small, but damn if they don’t hit the “I want fast food hotdogs and pay very little” feeling.
@@johnbuscher unfortunately some people don't have a Sheetz or even know what that is.
I'm sad for those people because Sheetz prices really can't be beat 🙏🙏
I don’t expect good quality food for $1 but I do expect *edible* food when it’s being served in a public place
You have a point, but nobody is going to serve you anything good for a dollar. I’m sorry lmfao. But they shouldn’t sell mostly and rotten food.
Kendrick’s reaction was so wholesome 😂😂
Double glizzed up on a Sunday afternoon
Thank you for the video. We are on a tight budget, so this is quite impossible to make.
Turns out the reason we pay for hot dogs is the price of the equipment and expertise to make them NOT the ingredients. I love cooking at home but I'm not gonna be making my own sausage lol.
oh wow you just understood how every single artisan profession makes their money
Josh did say you could buy store bought instead of making your own. It is still way cheaper
7:37 Kendrick's face is contemplating existence while eating that hot dog. This should tell how good it is
Joshua's but better or but faster for me personally were never about copying everysingle step, they are great way to learn to cook but whenever i don't have something thats being used in his videos, i just do with what i have it still works most of the times and the quality still remains higher then getting it from the fast food places
This looks delicious, but there is no way in hell I’m spending that much time making HOTDOGS 👀. I envy anyone who has the time 🙌
Hi, if you like cooking, feel free to check out my easy recipes ;-)
facts
Or money, to be honest. Dude used the most expensive methods for a series called "but cheaper". what a fucking sham
I mean.... You spend a couple of hours, and you get, easily, a few months, to a year's worth of hot dogs... Or a few summer party's worth.
Being realistic, if you've already got the grinder out, you could, feasibly, take a day, and have all the cased, meaty goodness you could ever need, for that same span...
@@andrewamann2821 cool 👍 thanks for the advice.
This all looks amazing and I wish I can make it but will probably have to wait a while before being able to make this
Hi, if you like cooking, feel free to check out my easy recipes ;-)
That while for me might be the entire life though. Videos like these are a reminder why i'm not into cooking that much, lol. No one has time for this unless cooking is a hobby.
@@DoctorStrange01 Very true! I can only even attempt his recipes on a Friday afternoon when I know I'm going to have a weekend where I can have the time to finish these recipes XD
This is honestly one of the best looking things u have made
There are also non intestine casings made of collagen that are cheep, easy to source online (look for sausage casings, they should come up), and last approximately forever if kept dry.
Hand grinders are cheap and effective. Just remember to keep the meat cold; almost but not quite frozen is best.
And, finally, a zip top bag with either a wide piping tip or, if not, a clean (preferably new and unused) syringe with the top cut off can be used to fill the sausages, albeit slowly enough you may want to cut the recipe down to a 10-15 batch.
You could actually buy the same amount of meat, grind it all, split it into batches and make other types of sausage or some amazing burger meat with the rest. If the meat you bought came to the store never frozen, you can split the ground meat up and freeze it in a size convenient for you (most people like 1 lbs portions if they have multiple people to feed). If you got pre-frozen meat, or the store got it frozen and thawed it, cook the meat into the dish you want before freezing.
I used to work at a butcher shop and actually got certified as a butcher here in the USA. I loved helping customers when they came in, especially those who wanted to try things like this but just didn’t have the kind of money to buy all the special equipment. So, all these ideas are tried and tested. Good luck!
I bought the book. 200 videos and $4,000 later I am now cranking out some of the best Joshua Wiseman food in my kitchen daily. Now when I go to the store I don't buy groceries I buy ingredients...👨🏻🍳

But cool
You are eating like a king 👑
@@Balo657 it's a process you invest in lil by lil
Here's a decent starting point.
1. Buy Multiple sizes airtight canisters & lots of them
2. Buy every oil and vinegar and cooking wine you can
3. Buy up every spice or herb or dried fruit you can
4. Buy empty uniform glass ware for oils and spices
5. Appliances. They can be expensive they can be cheap.
6. Cooking utensils and measuring spoons and cups.
7. Buy a Label maker. (walmart) $40.00
Figure out which kitchen appliances you need and will actually use on a daily basis
Lol that opening had me dying. Also Josh knows there are good store bought hot dogs right? Not just the lame ones.
Haha that opening segment had me in tears😂😂
Thank youuuuuu!
I’ll would buy overpriced hotdogs from Whole Foods but make Josh’s bun recipe! ❤️
I like how this one was like "okay, so you do have to own the things to make sausages, so.... anyway, we made the episode so here you go!"
bro why do I keep seeing ppl hating or being overly critical, bro is just vibing making cheap hotdogs but as gourmet as possible. Its up to you how to use the knowledge he gives you. he doesn't have to show you how to make a hot dog on a grill. But most don't know how to make hotdogs from scratch. the way I see it, he gave you more knowledge than you needed, but i still see ppl spreading negativity bc they'd rather see something they've already seen before. It's crazy to me no cap
You can fill a sausage casing by hand with a piping bag tho sometimes it can turn into a 2 person job.
I'd rather spend $20 on a stadium hotdog than put myself through this.
It isn't even a hard recipe. Maybe the sausages are, but you can just buy sausage and make everything else to save money.
come to san francisco that’s how much they are here 😩
murrica, if it were up to me, id triple the charge
Josh, I am once again begging you to go to Iceland, try their hot dogs, and teach us how to make them. They are the best in the world.
@Jacko Sargs They're the best I've ever had that's for sure.
Please keep doing the amazing intros. Hitting the dog into his mouth was great! 😂😂😂😂 I watched it three times.
Yes
The reality is is this will come to about 10$ a serving for like 4 servings and you end up with about 50$ ingredients you'll never use ever again. Still cool tho but definitely not cheaper.

Being josh I'm kinda surprised he didn't make the mustard mayo and ketchup. Love this Josh.
I think there should be a series for college students who only really have access to the mini-fridge and microwave in their dorms. I didn't have access to a full kitchen until my senior year of college.
Edit: To make it clear, my school also didn't have a food court. You were completely on your own for food.
I mean, what people living in a dorm even have a cutting board and a knife? And if for some reason you do, you have to awkwardly cut on your desk. You don’t have spices, and you don’t have room for much of a pantry or condiments. And based on how Josh does videos, you’ll be given recipes with ingredients you’ll use once or twice before you hit the expiration date. And do you want those things crowding your fridge or pantry space when you have so little in the first place?
I support the idea out of pure absurdity and how much it will crush Josh’s soul to have a microwave and mini fridge as his only appliance options.
But if we’re being realistic, just eat your food court and your ramen and be happy.
@@seanmatthewking Yeah um…we didn't have a food court either so there goes that. My school owned a "cafe" that didn't serve full meals and it was a train ride away. And to answer your questions, yes actually. You do awkwardly make your food at your desk. Maybe not the microwave as his only appliance but to use things that someone would have in a dorm. Hell, I even used an iron and tin foil to make a quesadilla before and it was probably one of the best cheap meals I've had. No, I didn't have a cutting board but I did have a knife and a plate to cut things with. As far as space, I had my bed lofted for the majority of my time living there so storage wasn't really an issue as far as things like spices and ingredients that don't expire fast. As for other things, I got everything in 1-3 serving sizes so nothing ever went bad.
Again, about space, you can make it work. I dormed with 3 people and shared a bedroom. You can find ways to maximize space.
You get really crafty with how you do things in college when you don't have any other options. Nothing stopped me from being able to make full meals with what little I had to work with. It's all about creativity.
Edit: also, to your comment about ramen, yeah, no. I tried that along with a lot of other instant food my freshman year then ended up with high cholesterol and heart problems fairly fast. I didn't have a choice but to eat full and healthier meals. Again, when there's no option, you make it work.
2nd Edit: last thing, when I transferred schools to one that had a kitchen (still no food court) for the people in the dorm to use, it was two refrigerators for ~450 people to use so… yeah
@ I have learned to make S O many things in the microwave, and while I do prefer full kitchens, you just can't help but make do. Or...
"Settle" and be happy 👀 have nothing and be happy... Sounds familiar. Ew.
He wouldn't be able to do it bc he's so out of touch with broke people. The prices in his But Cheaper videos are always kinda sketchy and he makes recipes for people with loads of free time.
Damn that college sounds like a shit hole.
I stand firm opposing mayo on a hot dog. Everything else looks delicious.

I would want to see more of them eating the food you make kinda looks fun
You should do a Boudin sausage recipe! A staple of the south!
Comment 360, and we're going full circle with this one. Joshua is a certified Chef. I don't want to hear all the complaints about how his dishes are labor intensive and extravagant. He is trying to give you a very good meal for a cheaper per serving price than it would cost at the Restaurant or ballpark. Great food takes some tools and time to make, no matter what you do. He's doing a very good job of keeping it cheaper, as he says, for the quality it produces.
With the cost of food so much higher right now, I appreciate this type of videos so much more.
For function over form, put the onion and relish in the bottom with the cheese
you have to factor in the cost of concussion protocol screenings at the ER when the stadium security brains you with a lead pipe for trying to sneak in outside food.
Props to Josh for being honest and including the actual price for once instead of the totally misleading per-serving price.
Papa and Nick DiGiovanni should collab!!!!
I almost cried these looked so good. I'm not joking either.
It looks quite appetizing and probably delicious too.
You made a cheap food sound expensive, then made the cheap food expensive and made it sound cheap.
I'm honestly impressed. The food looks pretty though
Joshua: "But cheaper"
Also Joshua: Uses equipment and ingredients.
And makes his own hot dogs😂
Yeah having a local butcher or carniceria offer you some of these perks (grinding the meat even) makes part of this possible. As of the meat casing, that may be trickier outside of the Kitchen Aid add on.

Anything bought in massive bulk - if bulk enough - will always be cheaper than what you usually buy for a family serving. This series is inherently flawed... and impossible for the average home cook to replicate, I might add.

It looks amazing papa 🤤
The opening was amazing. His face with the hot dog in his mouth was the highlight.
Just tried making papas buns myself really need go get a scale because apparently my "by eye" portioning skills are trash but for the first time at the age of 25 I'm finally expanding my culinary skills into some forms of baking. Maybe one of these days I'll be able to make my culinary dreams come true. Shout out to @joshuaweissman from the fort hood area of Texas. Love the content and I hope you keep it up for a long time bud. Maybe one of these days I'll get to meet you in person. I'd love to learn a thing or two from someone so close to my age.
That looked amazing with the exception of ketchup on a hot dog. That's a nope for me. Ketchup is too sweet for me. I'll try it without the ketchup. Lol
This one was more of a "but better" than cheaper. The idea with making the buns is good tho and indeed simple and can be cheap, same with the pickled stuff and onions. The dog itself, not so much. I'd honestly like you to create a series where you go in a store and buy cheap brands and make fancy dishes with those.
Great video!
