Great video. Some advice when cleaning an electronic throttle body, never force the butterfly open, it can seriously ruin it. If you turn the key to 2nd position and press the gas pedal it will open. Use a heavy object if you don’t have help
You should’ve mentioned that if you’re going to clean the throttlebody you should also clean the mass airflow sensor which is right next to the air filter. Also, if you’re going to change the spark plugs out on an LR3 you first need to disconnect all of the coils and if it’s running rough it’s worth checking that all of those coils are firing correctly, then change the spark plugs 👊
Great call on the engine swap. Those Mercedes engines are dang near bulletproof. This Wanda Webuild (lol) is turning out really well. Aspen as so adorable. Enjoy seeing her keep you from slacking. 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you for another fun video Waldo!!!!

Great video, awesome work you do, I admire your courage to tackle such a complicated beast. A few pointers for you, as I have owned a Range Rover Sport for the last 15 years ('06) and have learned a few things along the way. The ZF transmission is very good. The centre differential is always open and it will only lock (electronically) when using any of the Terrain Response programs. Otherwise you can get cross axles on Normal drive mode and get stuck and embarrassed. This Jaguar engine is great (earlier models had a BMW problematic engine), once you get it sorted out it will be more that enough, and it works well with the rest of the components. DON"T change it! You need to clean or change the MAF sensor (cheap and easy). Change all the ignition coils as well , because if one of them goes the car goes into limp mode all of a sudden and you don't want to be caught out in the bush. The emergency break releases automatically when you press the accelerator, and in case it gets stuck there's a manual release cable inside the cabin. Watch out for the break lines because they rust and can break. CHANGE them to be sure. The air ride is ok, but error prone. Ride height sensors, compressor problems, leaky airbags, all kinds of problems! Replace them with O.M.E. coil overs and the ride is awesome and worry free! The parking break needs to be adjusted every time you change the breaks and rotors, there's a special procedure you have to perform to let the vehicle adjust itself to it as well. If the controller in the back breaks down (the plastic cogs wear out and chip), it's a pain in the ass to replace. Another thing you'll need to check and possibly replace , is the control arms and bushings, front and back. It's a heavy vehicle and they wear out. Also replace the radiator thermostat and sensor, as it will throw an engine light soon enough. If I think up of something else I'll tell you next time. Good luck, best regards from Canada. :)
Great episode, watching in the UK👍I have seen on another disco videos, people removing the air suspension and installing a traditional spring system, it even comes with a module to tell the discos electrics, it has air suspension. May be an option for you and less maintenance down the road. I prefer diesel too, much easier to maintain and a lot less issues.
Thank you! Yeah, the replacement cost for the traditional spring shocks is about the same as replacing the air bags. I think this vehicle has made it 130k miles on original air suspension, so I think I'll fix that up and get another 100k+ miles out of it 👌
The air suspension is what makes it an LR3! Sacrilege converting it coils! Its really not that complicated a system. Compressor, reservoir, 4 x air bags, 4 x sensors and 2 valve blocks. In 200,000 miles, mine has all original components, although I did rebuild the compressor with new piston and billet end cap.
Would that be the M57? Did he use the Land Rover 6HP26 transmission? If so, do you know how he adapted it (or did it even need an adapter)? The M57 would move pretty high up the list if there were an easy way to mate it to my existing transmission
Don't forget to give the MAF and MAP a little squirt as well.. by-poduct of low compression! Hasn't happened to me but from what I read the brake light switch sends things into a tantrum. Not sure if your tool does it but the IID Tool allows you to reset adaptives on trans and steering wheel angle.. My dash was lit up like a Christmas tree as well but really not too much drama. The low coolant will be the float which is rotten and not serviceable; a tank from RockAuto, I think a Doorman replacement was pretty cheap. Thanks for the vid,
@@WaldosWorld If the compressor has never been serviced pretty much 100% sure you'll have to replace the air dryer beads. Pretty easy job just gotta pop the cover off 3 bolts then drop the compressor with 3 more bolts. The front 2 hoses are easy but leave the rear 2 large hoses for after the compressor is unbolted then you can pull down on the compressor while pushing up on the locks. If you try to do the rears with compressor in it can be impossible. 1 screw to take the dryer off, twist and pull. You can replace the beads for like 5 bucks but a kit with the filter pads isn't much more. You really have to have a good look at the plastic on the dryer cap between the air fittings for a hairline crap. Best bet is buy the kit that replaces the beads and cap with new o-rings. Also take the case off the electric motor and pray it out with some electrical contact cleaner and barring leaks your suspension will be fine.
Big fan of the Om648. I got three of them--two E-classes and spare sitting around. I also have a OM642 in an R-class, but it's not as fun to drive, and I love a straight six. OM648 is also about as new as you can get without DPF or DEF.
Of my 4 current vehicles, 3 are straight 6. So much easier to work on and well balanced. Haven't seen anyone in North America do a OM648 swap on youtube. Legitstreetcars did a little tuning on one in a E320, but I don't think many have tapped it's true potential. Bottom end is pretty similar to a OM606.
The pcv line in front of the throttle is supplying metered air into the crank case and the pcv line behind the throttle sucks air out of the crank case.
I had the exact same problem with the thottle body/MAF sensor. Unfortunately it also was coupled with the fact the car needed a full tune up (the LR3 sat for about 5 years unused before i bought it). Once all of those things were done, my car now runs *beautifully*. I doesn't rev in park or feel like light airplane turbulence at a traffic light 🤪

I'm with you when it comes to diesel, and it is always my first choice. If I had the time and expertise, I would buy a discarded TDV6, and fit a Ford 3.2 DuraTorq i5. I think the air bags and related components (when new) will last at least 100k miles, which is probably acceptable. I think I'm willing to throw a little money at it and see how I like the air suspension 🤷♂️
Waldo , do you have a yearly state inspection in N.H. The reason I ask for example .. here in N.Y. the inspection is done using the A.L.D.L. connector and tail pipe test on Diesels . If the check engine light is on . The computer (inspection mach) will not allow the test to move forward .. If the car or truck is over 25 years old than it is just a safety test . ( light wipers brakes ect) I lot of guys here have a lot of problems when they modify a car under 25 years old Also you need a valid Inspection to keep the car registered here in NYS,.
Yeah, we have some of the strictest inspections in the nation here in NH. The state motto "Live Free or Die" apparently doesn't apply to this. We have yearly safety and emissions that are luckily done with OBDII only (no tailpipe). I have some ideas of how to make it work, but I can't say here for legal reasons 😬
You might want to check TCCM behind the battery to see if there is corrosion. It could get wet and corroded and could give you tons of issues! When you are done with yours, come fix my LR3! lol
I actually just tracked down the issue yesterday! Let's just say there was a wiring issue that "took down" the whole vehicle. It'll be in the next video 😉
Great video Waldo! Loved the crack about “major design flaw”. I’m wondering how difficult it will be to couple the mercedes diesel to the existing transmission.
Thanks, Greg! Yeah, there are no adapter kits (that I can find) to match ANY engine to the Land Rover 6HP26 transmission. Obviously, I would factor adapter availability into engine choice. I guess I'll need to go the custom route, so we'll see what happens! 🤷♂️
Waldo's World Right. This fellow made custom adapters from aluminum. ua-cam.com/video/3s9ka42uubU/v-deo.html. Might give you some ideas, if you have access to a machine shop. Good luck!
@@gregholloway2656 I think I saw that video months ago, but I had another watch and it's good stuff! It definitely gives me some ideas and confidence to try making my own adapter (with maybe a little help from a machine shop)
@@Indigenous_DNA I'm using the Nanocom Evo. I'm a little disappointed by how flaky and slow it is considering the high price. A lot of people recommend the GAP IID tool, which I avoided because I didn't want to rely on an iOS or Android app, but to each his own 🤷♂️
I haven't actually tried the heat yet. Funny story: One of my trucks recently sat for maybe a month while I was finding the time to repair it, and in that time, a family of mice moved in to the heating ducts. When I turned the heat on for the first time, a bunch of nest material blew out of the defrost vents all over the dashboard. I ended up having to set mouse traps in the truck 😂
Paul Blake : I have the same issue with passenger side vents, haven't solved it yet ,any help is welcome. As for the rear vents on your car, there's a rotary switch in the back, (between the round air vents) that needs to be rotated open to allow air to flow. Try that!
What are you thoughts on the OM 642? The 648s successor ? I only ask because looking at the diesel engines that Mercedes has produced over the years, this one has stood the test of time, the 606 & it’s successors have had pretty short production runs between 4 & 6 years whereas the 642 is still in production since 2005 !
I do like the long production run for sure! There are a couple things I don't like about it though. I have a personal preference for inline engines vs V engines (the straight-6 in particular is great because of its inherent balance and torque). Inline engines are usually easier to work on because there's more access to the sides of the engine. Second, the OM642 has modern emissions garbage like DEF and DPF, which is very undesirable to me
When buying a 648, pay close attention to the surrounding area of the injectors. Black death can be a pain to deal with. M57 is an awesome engine too with lots of hp potential. But again, i have to say, keep your eyes peeled for an om606 turbo. Getting rare these days but they are the true kings of big, cheap yet still reliable diesel hp. As always, great video!
Can you show us a video of how to fix the air compressor? Hitachi and AMK, they both can give error codes C1A13-64 and C1A20. These are most common things go wrong with these air compressor!
Why the desire to swap to a diesel? Just curious. Jaguar AJ 4.4 on LR3 is pretty solid.I am almost at 300 000 miles on mine and it is still problem free engine. This might just be the best engine that LR ever produced.
First off since when do we not take the throttle body off and clean both sides? Secondly looks like we need a Gap IID tool for those dash lights, and to reset engine parameters lolo 🤣👏👍
I'm waiting for that diesel swap. I am also going to do a diesel swap in my LR3, I am also probably going with a Mercedes OM series engine. Have you found out how you'll control the transmission? I've only found one option so far. The electrical issue is probably from some corroded wires cause by a water leak, most likely from the sunroof, but also could be from bad seam sealer on the roof body seams or from the windshield adhesive.
Hi Waldo great another diesel enthusiast! I have a suggestion for you regarding engine swaps. Find yourself a W124 Mercedes with a 3ltr OM 606 engine in it(rare in States) then talk to dieselpumpuk and fit a quick spool kit and an 8mm diesel pump and have 600@ crank horsepower engine! These are very strong engines from the factory -let us all know what you think When I have saved enough money this is what I shall be doing to my 2.7tdv6 LR 3
Yes they are high mileage I agree but I don’t think they are too expensive to refurb and you could exchange one you find for a rebuilt one cost permitting. Mileage doesn’t seem to be a problem I have seen several with 200,000 plus miles on make over 600@ the crank and be ultra reliable. Anyway something to think about
Hey waldo my 06 lr3 sometimes it has a ticking noise when i put it in park or on start up but when i put my foot on the brake it stops the ticking noise any ideas
Putting a turbo engine that would be a mistake in my opinion. I think it would be really cool but if I’m gonna take something off road I’d like it to be as simple/easy to work on as possible. Not to mention I’m pretty sure those as brand new engines and you will probably be at the mercy of a Mercedes dealer. That said I get it, it would definitely make a great video and a good challenge with your background.
I totally agree about reliability being important. Older Mercedes diesels have a great reputation for being SUPER reliable. While the OM648 is a bit newer, it seems to be a solid engine. Also, I'm not sure which is worse: Mercedes dealers or Land Rover dealers 😂
i couldn't believe my eyes when you didn't even let the discovery finish the cycle of checks and priming before you started the truck? i hope you realised that by doing this you can actually snap your crankshaft.
@@WaldosWorld I meant MAF sensor. It would throw a CEL if disconnected entirely but a poor connection on one of the wires causes rough idle. Glad you got it sorted. Mine was a money pit, never again 😭
Hi Waldo, Your R32 is a gas engine isn't it? It should be a VR6. NA too, if I remember correctly. That has the same design flaw of needing those spark-o-lators (shamelessly stolen from Derek @ Vice Grip Garage) to ignite the fuel mixture. You must have run across them before at one time or another. Thanks for the video! -mike
Man.....im surprised you were able to cover the sparkalater plug change in one video.....most cars or trucks these days you spend 4 or 5 hrs just removing crap to even get to the engine 15 mins to change them then 5 hrs to reinstall everything .....or pay 4 prices to let one of these so called dealership techs change them only to have to pay an additional price for something they broke that was (supposedly)already broke .........
Hahaha that's a good point. I was going to complain about how hard it was to change the plugs, but I guess it wasn't really that bad in the grand scheme of things 😂
The best land rover rough idle fix is removing the motor and using it for a boat anchor. Put a Cummins in there and drive it for the rest of your life. Land Rover makes the worst SUV. Maximum cost for minimal value.
Aspin means "Asong Pinoy" or literally means Filipino Dog. Why would you name a dog with a kind breed. It is like calling your dog "Hi German Shepherd, Come boy". I am one step away from unsubscribing. Tell me a good reason why I won't.

Looking forward to part 3
Thanks!
Love to buy it from you when you’re done.
Nice job on the tune up!
Thanks, Cory!
Did you end up doing a video on the electrical gremlins?
Good video! Keep them coming
Thank you!
@@WaldosWorld can’t wait!
Good luck!
@@WaldosWorld
What scan tool are you using to diagnose the LR3??
@@gregholloway2656 I think I saw that video months ago, but I had another watch and it's good stuff! It definitely gives me some ideas and confidence to try making my own adapter (with maybe a little help from a machine shop)
@@Indigenous_DNA I'm using the Nanocom Evo. I'm a little disappointed by how flaky and slow it is considering the high price. A lot of people recommend the GAP IID tool, which I avoided because I didn't want to rely on an iOS or Android app, but to each his own 🤷♂️
How does your heater work?
I just got my LR3 in June and I have only one vent that puts out any heat, and the rear vents do nothing
Try that!
@@rrshse6704 You need to have the heater core replaced! It’s a VERY common issue with the LR3 and RRS.
@@dkindig1 I do have good heat, my cooling system running fine. I believe that the distribution ducts may be obstructed somehow. Thanks though!
Second, the OM642 has modern emissions garbage like DEF and DPF, which is very undesirable to me
“Spark plug?” Hilarious
I should probably just stick with diesels 😂
That’s right dude I’m glad I gave you an amazing idea for an engine swap😂😂👍👍
Yeah, great call!
G'day Waldo great video
Thank you!
You have a fan here Aspen. Waldo who???..
If you are considering an OM648, you really should look into a BMW M57 diesel. They are monsters with a cult following here.
Yeah, the M57 certainly has my attention!
The problem with the BMW M57 diesel is that we never got them in the USA.
@@atx-cvpi_99 We got a lot of them though? They were in the E90 335d and the E70 X5 xdrive35d
Can you show us a video of how to fix the air compressor? Hitachi and AMK, they both can give error codes C1A13-64 and C1A20. These are most common things go wrong with these air compressor!
If it needs to be repaired, I'll definitely film it! 👍
Hey! I love your videos, I have the same truck, do you have any videos on that tranny fault sign you are getting?
Waldo where the hell have you been? Thought you fell in a hole somewhere...you need to post much more often!!!
I know, it takes a long time to get videos out! 😬
Why the desire to swap to a diesel? Just curious. Jaguar AJ 4.4 on LR3 is pretty solid.I am almost at 300 000 miles on mine and it is still problem free engine. This might just be the best engine that LR ever produced.
I agree, the AJ V8 is a great engine, but I just have a preference for diesels. Also I think it would be a fun project 👌
I agree!
First off since when do we not take the throttle body off and clean both sides? Secondly looks like we need a Gap IID tool for those dash lights, and to reset engine parameters lolo 🤣👏👍
Good job. I like the spirit!
Thank you!
These are very strong engines from the factory -let us all know what you think
When I have saved enough money this is what I shall be doing to my 2.7tdv6 LR 3
I definitely would put an OM606 in it if I find one, but they seem to be getting hard to find, and they're all very high mileage!
Anyway something to think about
Hey Waldo, nice content. Btw, what is the artist that plays at minute 5:54? I like it!
@@WaldosWorld I swear I head you say the OM608 the OM648 is definitely a lot more solid motor and will be way easier to find cheap.
Flammable metal can on a battery!
4:39 Nailed it😂😂😂
Ha ha Waldo ,gas engines has spark plugs
i couldn't believe my eyes when you didn't even let the discovery finish the cycle of checks and priming before you started the truck? i hope you realised that by doing this you can actually snap your crankshaft.
More Aspen, please!
You have a Nanocom? You legend, legacy or evo? Why change the engine?
Yep, I got the Evo. While the 4.4 V8 seems like a very good engine, I prefer diesels and I think it'll be an interesting project 👍
Waldo, do you have a website ?
What kind dog is it ? Doberman ?
Good stuff
Thanks!
BMW M57 conversion there is already a kit for it
Do you have a link to the kit? That would probably put the M57 at the top of my list

Thanks, I'll take a look!
@@WaldosWorld I just brought a 2008 TDV8 3.6 Range Rover Vouge. The engine is a beast.
A British car with electrical issues? No way! Edit: Ninja'd by @Scott M
I know, right? I hope I don't regret the purchase 😂
4:43 You don't know about spark plugs 😱😱
Your rough idle was a poor connection on the map sensor wire to the plug. You inadvertently fixed it by removal of the air intake and replacement.
Interesting! I would expect the Check Engine Light to be on for that though. I scanned for codes and didn't see anything relevant... 🤔
@@WaldosWorld I meant MAF sensor. It would throw a CEL if disconnected entirely but a poor connection on one of the wires causes rough idle. Glad you got it sorted. Mine was a money pit, never again 😭

She's a vizsla 👍
wow I think your's is even rustier than my 05, underneath it makes every job ten times harder
LR Scanner - check codes - no guessing
I meant to mention it in the video, but there were no engine codes and no CEL
Use the backhoe & make yourself an Auto Pit.
Lots of car for little money because of lazy servicing............... it's a common theme in your purchases . Good for you I'd say 😀
Hi Waldo,
Your R32 is a gas engine isn't it? It should be a VR6. NA too, if I remember correctly. That has the same design flaw of needing those spark-o-lators (shamelessly stolen from Derek @ Vice Grip Garage) to ignite the fuel mixture. You must have run across them before at one time or another. Thanks for the video!
-mike
Om606 please
Be careful doing the oil change. Make sure you have some protection with the lift, air fails and 2.5 tons come crashing on you.
Yeah, that would hurt if an air bag decided to deflate, huh?
Am I the only one who noticed the white powder come out of the throttle body ??
Yeah, that was some corrosion from the aluminum on the exterior of the throttle body
@@WaldosWorld sure it was Waldo, sure it was...
engines producing so much compression that the fuel ignites by itself? sounds like a major safety flaw to me
Keep that v8... its surprisingly durable!
Yeah, it does seem like a good engine! The diesel swap is for a couple reasons: I prefer diesels, and I think it would be a fun project 👌
Yep... i get it... good content too!👍
Man.....im surprised you were able to cover the sparkalater plug change in one video.....most cars or trucks these days you spend 4 or 5 hrs just removing crap to even get to the engine 15 mins to change them then 5 hrs to reinstall everything .....or pay 4 prices to let one of these so called dealership techs change them only to have to pay an additional price for something they broke that was (supposedly)already broke .........
Hahaha that's a good point. I was going to complain about how hard it was to change the plugs, but I guess it wasn't really that bad in the grand scheme of things 😂
I said Hilda
How many ".computer engineers does it take to remove a clip"? Thats right , 3.
2 to hold the clip and one to
The best land rover rough idle fix is removing the motor and using it for a boat anchor. Put a Cummins in there and drive it for the rest of your life. Land Rover makes the worst SUV. Maximum cost for minimal value.
The sound of a proper truck engine would be epic -- I think the Mercedes diesel I'm considering is on the quiet side 😕
Had one...never again.....LR is 💩
