  • Paul Andersen describes the process of mitosis. He begins by discussing the importance of the cell cycle in development, regeneration, asexual reproduction and wound healing. He differentiates between haploid and diploid cells and describes the structure of the chromosome. He then moves through all the phases of mitosis; interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and cytokinesis.

    You taught me something in 13 minutes that my college professor spent 2 classes going over.
    Best part is, I understood what you were actually saying.

      This is because as humans we learn better one on one. This is why homeschooled students typically score better on tests and absorb material faster because they have all of their teacher's attention. Studies show the larger the classroom the longer it takes to teach a concept to all the students in a class.

    Brain and muscle cells only go through mitosis once as we are developing as embryos, afterwards they stay in a perpetual G0 state, meaning that we usually stay with the same number of brain cells for the rest of our life. The reason why neurons and other cells such as these ones don't divide is because a cell has to stop performing its function as it undergoes mitosis, which is bad if the cell dividing is a neuron. Imagine if the neurons in your body begin to divide and stop performing their functions, you won't be able to send an electrical stimuli from your brain to major organs and your heart will stop beating, you're lungs will stop breathing, your brain itself will stop working and so on. That's why we have a limited number of these cells and they can't perpetually divide like the rest.

    I have a question that any of you may solve.
    Mr. Andersen mentions that brain and muscles do not undergo mitosis, but how do we get these cells originally? Seeing how mitosis changed us from a single-celled organism to a multi-cellular, chemical powerhouse, how did the "special" cells increase in quantity"?

    • @DeezNuts-jh1hh
      @DeezNuts-jh1hh 8 років тому +2

      they're specialised cells so in g1 they leave for g0 where cells become specialised

    • @Maestro455
      @Maestro455 8 років тому +10

      +EliteTech When ur young u have a punch of cells called stem cells which are the main source of any cell in ur body and they are cable of forming any cell in ur body so they first copy themselves and then specialise to form these muscle or nerve cells and these stem cells decrease in number the older you get.
