- Sample pioneers Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi of The Avalanches sit down with Pitchfork to talk about some of their favorite samples, from ones used in their own songs like "Frontier Psychiatrist" to a very clever repackaging of the Underdog theme song in Wu-Tang Clan's legendary, "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F' Wit."
The Avalances' Since I Left You 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is out now. linktr.ee/theavalanches

The Avalanches Break Down Their Favorite Samples | Under the Influences | Pitchfork
Petition to make an hourlong version of The Avalanches talking about their favorite samples
yeah , watching this ten mins in i was thinking i could watch this for hours. then i realized there was only a minute left.
Dude I want a whole series of this...
The limit on UA-cam is 10 hours these days, right...?
Now you’re speaking my language
Have you seen the video where the dude breaks down every sample on the album?
They’re like the two substitute teachers who were cooler than the actual teachers
the avalanches recognizing j dilla is just perfect
Robbie Chater did mention him for their posts too. Legends.
Plunderphonics guys worship Dilla, Madlib, Alchemist, DJ Shadow, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and Preemo. Shout out Marley Marl too.
My fave album was 28. I ordered it a few days ago and can't wait to receive it.
this gives me hope for humanity ngl
Hi galactic hole
That is NOT what I expected them to look like at all. Great interview.
It’s funny I’ve been listening to them since like 2008... never had any idea what they looked like
@@my-spinning-wheel Same but 2001 for me!
These guys look like two high school teachers that decided to make music that slaps
@@Jim_Thomas_Draper back then there was a lot more members
Remember this is 20 years after they got famous, though.
completely un-pretentious guys, love their music
The way he’s still so proud of finding THAT horse 😂🫶
Frontier Psychiatrist song was my introduction to The Avalanches and immediately was hooked. Thank you for all the gems you have done over the years.
Loovee that song. Music video is even more perfect.
Bruh lol same. It was the very first song I heard and boom instantly just went all in
Me too, I've listened to it so many times when I'm talking to someone I have the urge to interject "And he also made false teeth".
@@tubian323he’s a nut, he’s crazy in the coconut! My kids now love that song just bc of the goofy lyric samples 😂
This was the song my older brother used to play all the time when I was around 6 just a few years after the album came out. I love him so much for introducing me to it and it’s one of my favorite albums of all time. These guys are geniuses and way ahead of their time
Well without J Dilla , Nujabes , Daft Punk , and The Avalanches I wouldn't be here. 🙏🏾
Lets add 9th wonder to that list
Same
burial?
Recommend listening to Madvillian
DJ shadow
not only is their music so perfect to listen to, but i would be perfectly fine with hearing them talk about music all day if i could
The sampling on "Tonight May Have to Last Me All My Life" made me fall in love with music
I cannot stop listening to you two... Absolutely stunning... I'm recently diagnosed Autistic and it is beyond fun to find the originals of your samples... I can't give a higher praise...
yup this was written by an autist
I also have an autistic obsession with the avalanches!
this could've been 3 hours and I would've watched. more PLEASE
Saw these two live, was an incredible experience. 100% recommend to anyone who has the opportunity
Same here, recently at the Enmore just before the Sydney lockdown, thank goodness.
They’re finally coming back to the States, and we just got tickets to the first show of the tour, in DC! Super hyped.
hope they come to the UK soon, they were absolutely amazing when i saw them in 2017.
Saw them live too the other day, that was epic.
Going to see them in Hamburg on Friday.... 😊
Phillip Schofield looks well groomed now he's left "this morning"
I had no idea they sampled Wayne and Schuster! That's awesome! Such underrated comedy.
Schuster is Lorne Michaels' former father in law.
What they do is so other worldly & transcending. Ive been OBSESSED with wildflower since it came out, its just so beautiful I cant even........
The avalanches discussing J Dilla, I’m in heaven 🤙🏼
Love the Avalanches so muchhh! Thank you for making this! ❤️
one of the best to do it!! so cool to hear them talk about this stuff
What a wonderful video. These two are my heroes. Hope they keep up the incredible streak of hot records!
Great interview. Two greats.
appreciate this masterclass, pitchfork! 1 hour version next please ❤
These guys. I love how they love music.
The Avalanches is my favorite artist swear
This is amazing. A simple thank you to for getting these guys to talk about their music. Very talented and underated Australian artists.
Now this video gave me the reasons why The Avalanches are my favorite band! They are amazing samplers!
They seem like such nice company. More, please!
Only discovered them about a month before this video came out and I've been a massive fan ever since. This video also introduced me to J Dilla's Donuts which is now also one of my favourite albums
This video is simply perfect
This just made my dayyyy!
Robbie is such a genius, you can hear it in everything he says too
thank you so much for this video
All these years listening to them and I didn't even know what they looked like, great video.
Thank you - every SoundCloud masher
Thank you for making great music
Gotdamn - Dilla makes me cry it’s so good.
I think its so chaotic people get confused but there's a method to their madness for sure and, once you immerse yourself in it, you understand what they are looking to accomplish and they seem less mad and more genius
Great video ;) more under the influences please ! :)
nascent sampler here with my heartfelt gratitude for this
THANK YOU. AMAZING!
The helicopter near the end of "We will always love you" was such a cool piece, I try to hear it everytime
g
Just lovely
I've never seen their faces, but I love their music. Two dudes that met at a crabshack and made dope music, with amazing visuals. SALUTE!!!!!
Inspired after seeing this
This video was made for my mind
Cool thing is Mac Miller sampled that last song by the avalanches in his song aliens fighting robots
Beautiful listening
they're so briliant
i would love to have a Gimix 2KXXI version guys, please. You are, and alway will be, an inspiration in music above all genres
I can watch them dissect samples for hours
didn't expect wu tang at all, gained respect immediately
I think it’d be the obvious mention?
They’re deep in hip hop
Raekwon was sampled very heavily and has a song named after his lyrics on the debut. "Kick Avalanche Rock!"
RZA is da goat
@@andressaldivar6669 and why is that exactly ?
Loved Grand Master Flash, The Propellerheads, so many names to mention before these guys came around. Still thank you for sharing, explaining things like compression. I think alot of people would be having a go during lockdown.
They are genious
Shout out to the horse running throughout SILY, that whinny is the GOAT.
Total kings
Legends
we will always love you was a best new music
them talking about two can win is EXACTLY how i feel about jo by mr oizo
love that song 😛😛🖖🖖
I started producing cuz of these ol' boys
may God bless their trap
We will never know that piano sample, it will always be a secret
was just thinking this. in all reality they probably forgot
literally just thinking this as well... kind of wonderfully maddening
Huh, can someone tell me what's this mysterious piano sample everyone is talking about?
@@pamka6913 13:05
I've been looking for it for 20 years
Wow someone referencing Big Audio Dynamite II. Unusual
Estos tíos son la leche
More @theavalanches please
good to see the avalanches are big fans of Jamiee xx's in colour, although Idk how they couldn't be it's so fantastic
I heard the Avalanches the first time just the other day, on Frontier Psychiatrist, and at first I was just kind of confused. But after I listened for a minute, I heard the Wu-Tang vibes.
I'd luv these guys to sample Fun Lovin Criminals...
The Avalanches are the best when it comes to using samples they are the kings
Dunno DJ Shadow is fairly OG
@@justinhadley3927 Pretty Lights is tight too.
Who else expected the avalanches to be like a bunch of nerdy skater kids that made beats together
that J dilla song is the most perfect sample i’ve ever heard
Avalanches mentioning Weatherall
I’m shocked they didn’t mention daft punk, I’d consider them, J dilla, and the avalanches to be at the pinnacle of sampling
What about DJ Shadow and Endtroducing?
Pretty Lights is up there too.
I miss Darren...
6:25 YESSSSSSS
Yessssss
That s900 is what’s up. If u know u know
This is nice, but they have released more albums since 2001 😅 I was hoping they’d talk about Noisy Eater after the Magoo Opening track
Agreed!! Gorillaz's song Superfast Jellyfish sounds like it, too!
I had no idea Wutang sampled underdog
Since I left you is a top 10 album for me
Everyone loves sampling
Even lawyers!
@@buzzbam I don’t understand
@@natureandrap lot of sampling is done without proper licensing, ends up causing lawsuits and stuff
@@buzzbam screw the lawyers
The GOAT
fuckin legends
Avalanches are so cool
Frontier Psychiatrist!
I love Sampling
The Avalanches were way ahead of their time in my opinion.
7:49 kind of like watching wizard of oz with dark side of the moon, or that scene in Scrubs where JD is listening to a song in his headphones and everything around him starts magically syncing up to the music
¡chido!
They reference a travle themed record/mix where they sample Madonna's Holiday... Does anyone know what it's called?
Cool guys
Standing Outside A Phone Booth(BB King Sample)
RIP DILLA RIP ANDREW WEATHERALL
How similar was Moby's process to this?
Brian Eno's view on sampling, I'm certain Frank Zappa shared the same view in regards to being a composer.
Is this a series? I’d not it should be
I genuinely wanna know what they think of Daft Punk. They're basically the masters of sampling.
One of favorites
Does anyone actually know how Jamie XX managed to do that to the Freez sample?
The perm.
He's taken the original phrase ('i want your love' or whatever it is), and is pitching parts of the lyrics up and down to fit the melody of his track, similar effect to loading it into a sampler and being able to play it on a keyboard like an instrument. Filtered it, reverb, loads of delay and chorus by the sounds of it
@@versatileverbeck1574 but how did he manage to isolate the vocal so well
ua-cam.com/video/E3LCqcC61mk/v-deo.html
10:00 re: the pop-up comment, Acid house was invented in the 80s
Like how much they get after giving credits to all of the samples they used? Like 10% of royalties are like left for them?
With thousands of samples I wouldn't be surprised
Man, if the Avalanches and Madlib worked on something together. My god lol
Bandstand where are u?!? 😨😔
