This was both informative and entertaining, thank you. Even though it doesn't need painting, I would consider antiquing any piece this textured. Just brush on some very diluted dark acrylic paint, working it into the texture, then clean off the excess. That would really highlight the texture work you have done, giving it an extra dimension.

I leave my sculptures in the oven, until completely cool, to prevent cracking from the sudden temperature drop. I've never had anything crack, by doing this.

I honestly can't remember if I tried that or not lol. Do you at least let out a little of the heat first? Ovens can be very efficient and hold heat well. Thanks for the tip I'll have to try it out, although I'm moving back to the Super Sculpey clay by itself after this. I plan on doing a follow up video on the 50-50 mixture video I made a while back, a review of sorts, sharing my thoughts on this particular sculpting compound in general. Thanks again!

This was an excellent series. I've watched all 13 of them. I will be watching them again since our grand daughter has asked me to create an elephant for her room. I am a woodworker and was originally going to attempt to carve (manual and power) an elephant. I have a sum total of 3 hours of carving in my life. After much deliberation I chose to do a piece in clay, because it is forgiving. You can fix a problem by adding more cay. Not so with wood. You are the solution to my "problem''. So now I can take my computer to my shop and work as I am able, and replicate your model. You specifics, and suggestions are awesome. Great detail. And your tips and techniques help answer the many questions I had. Watching the entire series helps cut down on questions. So I suggest other students watch the whole series. Finally, the secret to successful woodworking is many mentors, and practice....and patience. You are a very reassuring mentor. You have a great sense of humor and a lot of humility---you don't take yourself too seriously. A major gift. Thank you for your help.

@@TheBroodingTom Hi! You are so welcome. I am re-studying parts 3 & 4. That is my progress so far. Next time I build one of these I plan to solder the wires. I was having trouble with the hips and shoulders flexing and twisting on me. I fixed the issue but I suspect my solution is solder. My work-in-progress has a big belly, strong shoulders and the start of a shape to the butt and hips. I've had to order more clay. Will have about $100.00 of clay into this almost 8 inch beast. I obtained some petrified agates about 1/4 inch in diameter. I think that will be an awesome look for the eyes. I plan on mounting it on an African Mahogany milled panel so it can hang above grand daughter's bed...a wooden Ferrari bed I made for her for her 2nd birthday. I wish you success, great health and lots more great videos. I'll attempt to give you a status report as I get more clay. ( There seems to be a shortage of Sculpey III.) Be Well, and thanks again, Ed

@@TheBroodingTom The Clay elephant is finished. "Sahara" the name given by our grand daughter, stands about 8 inches tall. She is glued to a sconce I made from Wenge, a wood which is found in the Congo. She is beautiful. I've added some light brown "grass" which she is eating, and I used petrified agates for her eyes, and I added a tiny dab of a glossy acrylic black paint to the center of her eyes. She is really "looking" at you. I carved her tusks from Basswood. This was my first project of this nature. Had a great time. Thank you for all your instructions and mentoring. I wish you success in all of your endeavors. Ed

I really loved the series ! I had to watch the entire series at one time . I’ve studied sculpting four 10 years taking masters classes in the states also in Holland . The master classes in Holland were a month long class per year over 4 years. I also have watched lot of sculpting videos for many years. One I couldn’t stay awake for more than 15 minutes every time I watched it, lol. Your video was great easy to follow moved fast enough and not too fast . I was wanting to sculpt an elephant and I learned so much from you, thank you very much . I look forward to seeing more of your future series .

Found your vid while putting my 2nd polymer clay project in the oven. Yeah, am one of those: doing first, searching for tips and instructions after lol. Nevertheless, TY for making this vid. So, my Sculpey package said "bake 30 min for 1/4in @ 275F". My sculpture has uneven thickness in all places, size = fitting in my hand, inside = metal clips wrapped in tin foil. I dared to improvise, based on all i listened to on youtube. I preheated the oven for about 15 min, set temp to 270ish (no oven thermometer, and even if i had one, wouldn't be able to see it from outside without opening the oven door). My fear was to undercook, so i baked for 2h, then let it cool down for a few hours without opening the door to let the temp go down steadily. My project was sitting in roughly the middle level height-wise, on a metal tray covered with wax baking paper. On the sculpture, i threw a piece of foil to protect a bit from direct burning and distribute heat hopefully evenly all around. So far, i would say i am happy with the way it came out - no cracks, hard evenly, no discoloration (my clay is white). Hope it helps somebody out there, to know this. I saw another vid, where a guy cooks his projects, in boiling water. Have you done this ever?

You have magnificent talent! I just took up sculpting a couple of weeks ago and you are the best 'teacher' I have found so far. I love how you voice over and just talk about how and why you do each thing you do. I wish more people did videos like this. All the videos I have found so far are just time lapsed and tell nothing to guide us new sculptors. It makes it really hard to learn anything. Thank you so much for doing what you do! I haven't checked yet, but I hope that you are still uploading videos.

    Really nice job, dude 👍
I've recently made my 1st ever sculpture (a creature I initially drew, then animated) and I've just got to bake it now. The issue is though, that the body is a tennis ball sized solid sphere with 4 stumpy little legs and long neck and head - think Galapagos tortoise and you're kinda there really! - but I'm concerned about baking times. The clay I've used says 15 mins per 6mm so I can work that out but should I detach the head/neck (which have a wire armature running through them both) and reattach again after baking? As I don't want them to burn or crack.
What would you suggest? Any input is appreciated 😊

I just want to say, this has been the most informative video I have found on baking polymer clay sculptures as of yet. Thank you. I will be subscribing to your page, because of that alone. I do have some questions, because I am new to working with Polymer clay:
    1. Let's just say something goes wrong with baking my sculpture, and it breaks or cracks after baking... what are some ways I can fix it, so all my hard work doesn't go to waste? What are good materials to use in fixing it?
    2. What if the thickness of my sculpture varies? Example, I am working on a clown. Most of the appendages are close to 1 inch thick or just a bit over, but the clothing and other pieces are thinner. How do I keep those from cracking or breaking off after baking?
I've made sculptures no bigger than 3- 4 in height, with maybe a 2 inch diameter, and had no problem. Now I'm making a larger scaled project ( the clown, very detailed). I don't want to spend hour after hour of work detailing this project, just for it to crumble apart. This, will be my second attempt on this. Any advice would be great. Thanks for the video!

I was wondering about top "regular" heated ovens versus convection ovens. I know the temperature has to be lower with latter, and temperatures downed, just seem more logical to use that with even result, just doing a bigger piece, 2x the elephant, it's gonna have some parts with more clay that I want, but gonna keep my time with the exo, never baked before :) What's your take on that? +plus, I have these Gigerish extension bulking, can I just roll small aluminium balls, what would you say the minimum thickness should be? I really don't mind failing this project, but insight would matter :D

The real answer: Yes it's ok. It's non toxic unless "burning", only then does it become toxic. Following the instructions provided renders this nearly impossible to happen though. Heck, one day I baked a sculpture just 2 hours before supper.

Never lower the temp that is indicated on the package. Also do not raise the temp either. It should be at the exact temp, which is why you should always use an over thermometer. You can keep a piece baking longer than indicated on the package...in fact, the companies under estimate the time to be baked. I always bake my pieces for an hour even if my clay is 1/4" thick. It will not hurt it UNLESS the temp is higher than indicated...in that case your piece will burn and turn black. Also I wouldn't put the piece directly on a baking surface...layer 5 or more pieces of average printing paper between the piece and whatever baking surface you choose OR you can even set smaller pieces on some polyfill (that's used for stuffing pillows) and place a deep aluminum pan(upside down) over it, or a sheet of aluminum foil as a cover. This way the piece will have nice insulation around the top and bottom of it and will assure an even constant baking temp. :) I also put my pieces in the oven WHILE the oven is preheating and also leave it in after you turn off the oven and let it cool while the oven cools. Your pieces should come out perfect.

Great work!!! I watched them all and I am truly inspired by your teachings. One question though, is it bad to cook this kind of clay in the same oven as you would cook food? My wife would kill me if I ruined her oven. Thanks.

Please make a dog sculpture (maybe a stray dog with protruding ribs and thin limbs - so that you can raise awareness of the terrible conditions some dogs have to go through!) thank you :)

Awesome, you are very talented. Have you tried just to make a silicone or latex mold of the elephant?

Totally love your work. I’ve watched this series twice straight through now and love it so much that my second ever sculpture will be an elephant. The first being a dragon, one headed dragon. I’d show a picture , but don’t know how on here. Thanks for all your videos. sincerely JC

No, I just leave them alone until they cool completely. I also bake in a small counter top oven. This is a tip that I've picked up from several other polymer clay artists, but if you don't have any problems with cracking, then keep doing what you're doing! But if you do have cracking problems, give it a try. :)

Ok cool just wondering. Usually the baking goes pretty well, this minor crack actually kinda surprised me. I'm gonna guess that the neck area happens to be the thinnest area on this build, and although polymer clay has shrinkage that's less than 1%, weak (thin) areas will be the first areas to accommodate (create space by cracking) for that shrinkage. Anyhoo, I'll be trying different things out over time, I appreciate it once again.

Cindy Cady Hi! Would love to try Polymer Clay crafting but I am confused with the kind of oven I should purchase. Some say convection oven are best but I do see a couple of clay vlogs succesful with counter top toaster ovens. Appreciate your help here.

Sojourner Hi. I've used nothing but a countertop toaster oven. The clay gives off a very strong odor, when baking, so I don't like to use the same oven when o cook food. I use my toaster oven for clay only. The only drawback, is that you are limited in the size of your pieces, you can't bake very large ones. Hope that helps, good luck!

Cindy Cady Ohhhh I was afraid Philippine brand oven toaster's heat might fluctuate much. but thank you so much for taking time to reply.😊

I started a bust sculpture after watching your series but followed your air dry clay armature without noticing. I didn't build the polymer sculpture on a base however like your alien video.. would this be a problem while baking? I was thinking since it has a hollow tube center, I could just put it on a pipe once its cured. Thoughts? Hope I didn't screw it up completely!

Any way you can shoot me a photo on Facebook? facebook.com/PolymerClaySculpting/ it would be easier to understand. It can be on the wall or message, either way.
But I'm gonna guess you have a solid core, made of compacted aluminum foil, that's covered in masking tape? If so, depending on if it structurally stable during the baking process or not, that might work too. A good example of what I'm talking about is the Snail Monster I did. The playlist id cool but viewing the photos on Facebook would probably be faster to get at and see
I make the outer clay walls a little thicker than usual to help give strength to the structure overall. It's hard to know without seeing. Let me know if any of this makes since?
