I have seen that many see him as a villain but actually he is really complicated and he clearly loves his borther and Rhenyra very much , even when he was in the brothel , he didnt seem very happy to me.... he looked quite sad actually and thanks to Matt Smiths brilliant acting you can see also in the funeral that he really feels sad for whats happened , him being ruthless in the city watch is actually quite normal as well, in medieval times punishments were really rough, if you stole you had your hand removed and etc , I would say that Daemon is going to be Jamie Lannister type of character

The actor who plays Otto Hightower does a fantastic job. I also cannot wait to see more of Rhaenys and Corlys Velaryon. They seem to be a power couple. Also, I don't think the "secret" survives The Dance, I think it is lost to the Targaryens.

Kinda weird that the guy who played Xenophilius Lovegood in the Deathly Hallows is not playing a Targaryen since he pulled off the long shaggy blonde hair thing pretty well. My guess is they were considering him for Viserys or Daemon and it didn't work out, but they still wanted him to be a main character in the show.

I love everything about this- except… the maester told Vicerys that either both baby and mother would die or they could save the baby. There was no way to sacrifice the child and save the mom- the baby had to come out and it was breach and they didn’t know how to turn it, so she was going to die regardless. I think saying he had a “choice” was a poor choice of wording. The mom will not survive with a baby that won’t come out and they did not know how to “abort” the baby to save the mom. She was going to die regardless. They did kill her, but it was either both of them or save the baby. Not one or the other.

Agreed. It's an awful thing to think of, and I know they had to get the baby out asap, though I still wish they would have at least poured a shit tonne of milk of the poppy (a lethal dose) down her throat before making the incision, OR, I wish they'd had someone smother her with a pillow first. Cutting her open while she was alive and alert was pretty cruel. Once again, it's an awful thing to have to do in the first place, and I know they had somewhat of a time crunch, but.... Ouch.

I think maybe the other "choice" was letting the gods decide. As if to say that maybe if no intervention takes place, that the gods may let them both live? A bit of a stretch but that might be the best way to explain why they wrote it that way. If they intervene, the mother will die, if they leave it with the gods, they may both live, or both may die. Two "options" with 3 possible outcomes.

      *FOUNDATIONAL PREMISE:*
      Alicent (Otto's daughter) becomes Rhaenyra's step-mother.
Alicent has two sons by King Viserys.
That leads to succession issues which Viserys doesn't want to address, and Otto & Alicent will have ambitions in regard to.
Although Rhaenyra and Alicent start out as the best of friends in the HBO series, that friendship will seemingly become fractured _(with factions formed)_

What I really loved about the first episode was the symbolism. The contrast between Queen Aemma's chidbirth and the jousting at the tourney was executed very well. I think you may have misread Boremund Baratheon’s asking of Rhaenys’ favor. I think it was heavily implied that it was an insult, with Rhaenys looking to Corlys in disgust, and Viserys dismissing punishing the slight insult.
This is emphasized later in Baratheon’s clear anger/disapproval when he pledges himself to Rhaenyra. He clearly does not believe a woman should be on the Iron Throne.

Fantastic vid as usual! Really well done. Might recommend it to some people unfamiliar with the source material :)
Just one thing I interpreted a little differently to you - when the impossible choice was presented to Viserys - it was said they could save one and sacrifice the other, they didn't say which one... then the deadly version of a C-section was presented as an option. It more seemed the king was presented with the option to save the babe and sacrifice the mother, or let it play out, and likely lose them both. I do not remember ever reading in the source material of a way to save the mother and sacrifice the babe in a serious breech birth, etc... but even if they did have one, that did not seem to be an option presented to Viserys. What i thought was horrific more than the action itself, was that they took the knowledge and choice from Aemma. She may have agreed to it or at least understood why it was happening, but instead they just butchered her in absolute terror. That performance was brilliant. All the actors were fantastic, but damn that scene was intense.

The maester doesn't say choose one or the other. He says we can save one or lose both. @@Persephone_Personified I think he thought she wasn’t going to make it. Aemma’s mother died giving birth to her so it’s possible Viserys thought they were both going to die and just wanted to save the child. No different to how current decisions are made in regards to woman being unable to deliver albeit not as violent and painful of a death. The tragedy was they were both going to die anyway and he choose to butcher his wife while she was still conscious

@@Persephone_Personified I have to respectfully disagree. They didn’t know how to turn the breach baby. A mother cannot survive if the baby will not come out. The likelihood was that both would die. Yes, he could have “left it with the gods” but the changes were high that both would die. Her losing babies probably had nothing to do with them being breach or he would have said, this child is breach like the last one. Women still die to this day due to this (I’m an RN) especially when they are home births, are opposed to c sections or other complications from getting the baby head down. We still MANUALLY turn breach babies by reaching in and turning them and that causing a lot of trauma to the mother’s body. With no means to sew up tears and bleeding, they could easily bleed out before we modern medicine.

@@Persephone_Personified you clearly didn't pay attention to what was said. Saving Aemma was never an option presented. There's nothing selfish in his choice and if Aemma knew she was going to die regardless but the baby had a chance to survive she would surely make the same choice.

House Velaryon is an ancient and proud house, with the blood of old Valyria in its veins. A noble house with a storied Valyrian lineage, the Velaryons had come to Westeros even before the Targaryens, if their family histories can be believed, settling in the Gullet on the low-lying and fertile isle of island of Driftmark (so named for the driftwood that the tides brought daily to its shores) rather than its stony, smoking neighbor, Dragonstone. The castle of Driftmark housed their ancient high seat, the Driftwood Throne, which according to legend had been given to them by the Merling King to conclude a pact.
Though never dragonriders, the Velaryons had for centuries remained the oldest and closest allies of the Targaryens. The sea was their element, not the sky. During the Conquest, it was Velaryon ships that carried Aegon’s soldiers across Blackwater Bay, and later formed the greater part of the royal fleet. Throughout the first century of Targaryen rule, so many Lords of the Tides served on the small council as master of ships that the office was widely seen as almost hereditary.
Their close proximity to the Gullet enabled the Velaryons to fill their coffers from the passing trade in the narrow sea and Blackwater Bay. They allied with House Targaryen from Dragonstone and House Celtigar from Claw Isle, both houses of Valyrian descent; while the Velaryons and Celtigars dominated the middle reaches of the narrow sea with their ships, the Targaryens ruled the skies with their dragons.
    Robert's Rebellion
The Velaryons frequently served as master of ships-so often that at times the office had seemed hereditary-and provided much of the Iron Throne's royal fleet. Lucerys Velaryon served as master of ships for King Aerys II Targaryen, being one of the king's bigger supporters against his son Rhaegar, the Prince of Dragonstone.
After Robert's Rebellion, the new king, Robert I Baratheon, granted the castle Dragonstone to his brother Stannis. The Velaryons have been sworn to House Baratheon of Dragonstone ever since.

Viserys and Daemon felt like they were really brothers and I loved the meaningful looks they gave each other. I loved the episode, but there’s one thing with which I’m still having an issue. Why didn't Aegon tell anyone about this dream... particularly the Starks? Why did it have to be a secret? Why didn't he never visit the Wall? Why did he kill people particularly on the field of fire etc if in the end his goal was ultimately to save mankind... could he have gone about it differently...? Why didnt he just tell his Lords paramount the dream and to pass it on to their heirs and so on.... so the rulers of the kingdoms will always know what threat was coming to Westeros.

    • @lodeleaf6401
      @lodeleaf6401 2 роки тому

Aegon did go to winterfell, during his last travels. His sister-wife queen Visenya spent significant time in the north and visited the wall on her dragon. During the conquest of Westeros, the King in the North, Torrhen Stark, bent the knee to the Targaryen dynasty voluntarily, the latter envoy represented by same Visenya herself. We don't know how much the targaryens revealed to the Starks, and how much was lost in history when people died at inopportune ties before passing on secrets, etc. The wall was being reinforced and funded throughout the Targaryen rule, if they thought it was meaningless they could have tried to destroy it by dragon fire. Knowing about the threat in the north kind of gels with why the mad kind Aerys had all that wyld fire green bombs made and stored in the red keep, and why he kept saying "burn them all!". As to why it should be secret at the timeline in this story, I don't know, maybe to avoid panic since the deadline of the walkers was unknown. As to whether it was really secret... probably some parts became myth or legend or lore, but much was lost in the tides of time. As to whether this is good story telling - I'd prefer to think that Aegon conquered Westeros for selfish power-hungry reasons (since his conquest was very cruel and bloody) as opposed to selfless heroic reasons like wanting to save the kingdom of men.
