  • In this video, Dr. Layman and I talk about the hormone difference between pea and whey protein. The argument that you shouldn’t eat animal protein because they are higher in estrogen is simply not true. If you are concerned about the hormones in meat, egg, and milk, you’ll want to watch this video!

    High estrogen from phytoestrogens compared to mammalian estrogens is a totally different topic. Plant estrogens (like those found in soy) continue to be shown to be protective in practically every Meta analysis to date. Whereas those mammalian estrogens in animals are very well known to promote many cancers--especislly breast and prostate cancers.
    Dr William lee's research on angiogenesis also shows benefits of soy and legumes (a food consumed in practically every blue zone)

    • @danielcastaneda7366
      @danielcastaneda7366 2 роки тому +2

      When it comes to soy supplements vs whole soy products, it is proven to have adverse affects on your body.
      soy won't hurt your heart, and soy does have other benefits. "It's high in polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and low in saturated fat. Natural soy products - like tofu or edamame - could replace red meat and other animal sources of protein higher in saturated fat," says dietitian Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital. One caveat: some soy products contain estrogen-like chemicals that could have adverse effects. So, stay away from soy isoflavone supplements and foods made with textured vegetable protein and soy protein isolate, found in many protein powders and nutrition bars.
      - source: www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/confused-about-eating-soy
      When it comes to blue zones, that's irrelevant because there are so many other factors involved as to why they live so long. If diet was the only or even the major factor, blue zones would be much larger than they currently are which isn't the case and in fact they're shrinking despite the fact that diets in those areas have not actually changed.

    • @dobahn25
      @dobahn25 2 роки тому +6

      @@danielcastaneda7366 I agree largely with you. The one point I'd differ slightly is that I wouldn't say blue zones data doesn't matter at all. At the very least it proves that a diet containing legumes is not a guaranteed "death sentence." 😁

      5 grams a day. That's it. No complications in this. It's the most studied substances and you can take it long-term. All you have to do is allow it to build up and 5 grams a day does that. It gets used as needed and you keep topping it up. All the questions about it like 'when should I take it' etc are trivial. You take it and it gets stored and used and the doses top it up. The end.

    I have a question about comparisons of amino acid profiles between Whey and Pea. Suppose I look at the quantity of leucine in whey (e.g., 7-9 grams per 100 grams of isolate powder), and want to compare that to the quantity of leucine in pea protein power (4-6 grams). To calculate how much leucine actually becomes available to trigger muscle protein synthesis from any quantity of either substance eaten, do I have to adjust for the differences in bioavailability of the two types of protein? Perhaps I would have to reduce the pea protein's *effective* leucine content from what is technically in there by something like 30%?
    If so, would the same adjustment apply equally to isoleucine, valine, tryptophan, lysine, etc., in general, or are some amino acids especially bioavailable in certain proteins and others not?
    For instance, suppose whey and pea had identical amino acid profiles and I am a lab rat restricted to one type of protein source. Would the same bioavailability considerations I'd have to make for leucine to optimize muscle protein synthesis apply to eating enough methionine to keep my fur healthy? Or, would I need to know one set of scores for the bioavailability of leucine in pea vs whey and another set for methionine? Sorry for the long question and if it's unclear.

    Plus, if one is consuming conventional pea protein and other pulses they have been harvested with the help of Preharvest crop dessiccation. "Pre-harvest crop desiccation refers to the application of an agent to a crop just before harvest to kill the leaves and/or plants so that the crop dries out from environmental conditions ("dry-down") more quickly and evenly.[1][2][3] In agriculture, the term desiccant is applied to an agent that promotes dry down, thus the agents used are not chemical desiccants, rather they are herbicides and/or defoliants used to artificially accelerate the drying of plant tissues.[4] Desiccation of crops through the use of herbicides is practiced worldwide on a variety of food and non-food crops." These include herbicides such as Glysophate.

I'm still under the impression that we need some animal protein. After your video about leucine and other amino acids, I have been Supplementing pea protein shakes with BCA. Folks, you have to take this with a very big grain of salt. In all blue zones (areas in the world where the most hundred-year-olds live), consumption of animal proteins is low. Meat nowadays is stuffed with antibiotics - that's worse than the hormones (which actually are in the meat, rest assured). And legumes do not contain any "hormones". It's kind of true for unfermented soy beans - they contain estrogen-like compounds. But if you ferment soy (like most asians do and westerners don't), you can safely consume it. In legumes, the problem is lectins, which are substances that the plant uses to fight off bacteria, fungi and insects. But lectins dissolve if you pressure cook legumes for 20 minutes. Read /The Plant Paradox" by Steven Gundry. Stay healthy - rarely eat meat.

    I am certainly not vegan, but there is a vegan shake that I like that is soy free and does have pea protein. I do add some aminos to the shake because I understand that it is not a complete protein. Though I found the video interesting - upon investigation pea protein has much less phytoestrogens than flaxseed, for example, and does not significantly change estrogen levels. I think if the discussion is about soy protein or a combination of vegan proteins in shake that increase the phytoestrogen amounts - I can certainly understand the concern. On the flipside - for some women with low estrogen having the phytoestrogens may be helpful. It may be that pea protein shakes can be of more concern for men or maybe women with issues of high estrogen that want to totally stay away from estrogen. However it is also important for us to remember that there can be a difference between high estrogen and estrogen dominance. Of course with estrogen dominance pointing to the ratio between progesterone and estrogen. (Estrogen can be normal but progesterone is low).

    I want to share my story of becoming a vegetarian.
    It all started about seven years ago when me and my wife attended a seminar in Singapore. It was a seminar about buddhism. That time I didn’t know that this would lead to a big change in my life, filling it with more meaning, compassion, and energy. Listening to all the inspiring speeches about compassion and nonviolence was a transformative experience for me. I decided to try being a vegetarian for just one week, and something quite amazing happened.
    During that week, I realized that being a vegetarian was a good thing. With a such small change like changing your diet, could have such a big impact. It made me feel more energized and I realized I didn’t really have to give up anything important in my life. I was still able to enjoy delicious food and do all the things I wanted, like lifting heavy weights at the gym. But this diet felt somehow meaningful to me. I decided to continue being a vegetarian, which meant that I stopped eating any kind of meat, fish or chicken.
    But it wasn't just about me. I realized that by not eating meat, I was also not supporting the suffering of animals. When I started looking more into it, I also learned about the significant impact that meat production has on the environment. Before the seminar, I knew that it was bad, but I didn't fully grasp the extent of the problem.
    You see, the production of meat, especially on a large scale, contributes to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution. The land required for raising livestock and growing animal feed leads to the destruction of forests, which are crucial for biodiversity and the health of our planet. Additionally, the methane emissions from livestock, particularly cattle, contribute to climate change.
    Moreover, animal agriculture consumes vast amounts of water and contributes to water pollution through the use of fertilizers and pesticides. The runoff from these operations contaminates rivers, lakes, and oceans, harming sea life and ecosystems.
    The more I learned about these environmental impacts, the more I felt compelled to make a change. It wasn't just about personal health or compassion for animals anymore; it became about also protecting our planet and preserving it for future generations.
    So, for the past seven years, I have been a vegetarian. The main reason I don't eat meat, chicken, or fish is because I believe in being kind and not hurting other living beings. But it is also because I want to minimize my ecological footprint and contribute to a more sustainable world.
    I hope my simple story can inspire someone to try eating more vegetarian food and avoid consuming animals. It's not about forcing anyone to change, but about thinking about a diet that is compassionate and respectful to all living things while also helping to protect our planet.
