- Forget what you think you know about protein and muscle.
Dr Gabrielle Lyon is a medical doctor with a revolutionary approach to health, wellness and longevity called muscle-centric medicine. In this episode we break the stereotypes surrounding building muscle; we discuss good and bad protein choices, and we explore how to deal with obesity as a nation.
This is a lesson in what we can all do to improve the long term health of ourselves and our community.

Very Interesting interview, I’m 55 years now and went all Keto around 8 months ago and started training 6 days a week and now I can tell myself that I am in the best shape of my life, weight as much as when I was 20 something but have more muscles. Also, my cognitive functions have increased greatly ; I remember things I read much, much better and lighter so I am the living proof that she is right .
Best regards you all
Franz
Me too brother (55) but I only started 3 months ago. Plus I was a glutten, type 2 diabetic. Diabetes is practically gone and though I can't see my 6 pack YET. I can feel them, which I wasn't able to do in the last two decades. I started Keto, not to lose weight but to fix my damaged insulin system. But I have lst ALL facial and neck fat, arm fat and leg fat. Plus I have lost about 20% visceral fat. In 3 MONTHS. What an added bonus.
@@truthorpropaganda9001 , Great to hear that man, keep doing it !!
For me is a mindset, I want that my body works as best as long as possible, period. I'm an introvert so spend maybe 100 hours reading about nutrition, keto, vegan , Lyon etc and decided to go keto cause it works for me ( and love cheese way too much ) I also realised that the amount of protein is crucial not only for my muscle growth but for my health .
A few years ago, you tell me to eat fat and I tell you your are crazy ha ha ha , now I eat bacon and dip my toast ( keto bread ) into the remaining fat .... I still can't believe that fat is the best energy source from all .
It took me around 1 year to clearly show my 6 pack and I am working on my 8 th pack ... some day ha ha
Take care

@@franzjosefmueller-alban509 Yep also a cheese lover. And love nuts also. So a lifestyle that promotes parmesian, macadamia nuts and walnuts was a glorius find. And also like you brother, I found I have to eat at least 30-40 percent protein or I just dont feel right. I eat very few carbs. Practically zero except in the cheese, nuts and unsweetened cocoa. You know everybodys metabolism is different but one meal I find that makes me feel amazing is 3 free range eggs fried in grass fed butter and a can of asparagus with some more grass fed butter melted on it and cooked in the microwave. I actually just dump the eggs over the aspargus and eat it all together in a bowl. For me, this meal is super food as far as energy, and just how good i feel.
Take care as well brother. Imagine how we would look if we would have had this knowledge in our 20's...lol.
@@truthorpropaganda9001 , yeah, each of us has to find what works best , I don’t believe in : one diet works for all type of argument. On work days I eat 3 times a day , weekends 2 with intermittent fasting on Sundays… best part ? I’m not hungry, that I found amazing!!
About the age , totally on point but then again, I look terrific for an 55 year old so…. I just came back from my Sundays run ( 12 k ) and I am trying to beat the 1 hour mark .

When you say Keto.... which version of Keto?
Really good knowledge . Another reason why I will never stop lifting and making protein a priority . Thanks a lot for this episode !

Lots of conflicting info/studies about protein and longevity/mortality.
The bottom line is that we were not designed to live sedentary lifestyles. We must keep our diets under control to stay lean with enough protein to maintain muscle as we age.
Great interview with Dr. Lyon. I like the analogy she made that people have become too domesticated and sedentary. Very important fact: it’s the amount of muscle we carry that determines longevity, not how slender.we are.
I can't recall Jeanne Calment or any centenarian looking jacked.
Not according to David Sinclair.
Better health yes. Longevity not necessarily.
The amount of muscle that you have going into old age [helps] determine longevity. As mentioned in the other two comments, sarcopenia is a natural occurrence to some degree, so developing sufficient bone structure and muscle mass as a younger adult is important. Sufficient, optimal, and jacked are not synonyms.

Never been on meds. No need for meds if you take care of yourself.
There were so many gems in this interview that I will be incorporating into my fitness regiment, and add it to the mentality. Loved the address of the truth that our current medical profession is oriented around problems, not prevention. Also the pushing of pharmaceuticals.
I’m going to listen to this again.
I love her, she knows her stuff, I totally respect her .
HehHeh, Yes!
She's awesome. Been following her for a little over a year now. Learned tons.
Her UA-cam channel is worth checking out as she has segments with Dr layman in nearly every episode.
Very excited about this! Exercise physiologists have been saying these things for decades. Her killer looks(elephant in the room) are beneficial for bringing it into mainstream, Old men with lab coats unfortunately is not conductive in today's social media environment.
Yes. Funny. The fact that she could have skated through life just using her looks makes us respect her a lot. She is an example for all of us.
She's not that hot, she is full of Botox.
@@Chris-kr7gg agreed. Give her a 4 out of 10
"Beliefs and facts are not the same thing." She points out why humans took 300,000 years to create science. And still we struggle.
Thanks for pointing out the motivation of that one doctor. I have found his diet to be much better when I add much red meat along with resistance training.
Another powerful substance from Dr Gabrielle lyon about muscle centric medicine. This is the third time I watched her on a different channel and I have learned so much about longevity and lifestyle. Please keep it coming Dr you have changed the perception about eating meat and protein and I was in total confusion before I found you on Impact theory . 👩🎓thanks a lot
This was a terrific interview ! You weren't afraid to ask questions when you didn't understand what Dr. Lyon said. Bravo to you for being secure enough in yourself to be able to do that !
This is great conversation n interview between both. He asks good questions. Dr Lyon is so knowledgeable in her field of medicine she has all the answers on the tips of her fingers and it all makes so much sense. Just looking at her physique says it all. Fit healthy n glowing.

Dr. Lyons.... this is a life changing discussion. Thank you!
Dr Lyon gives information like a boss..."survivability is directly related to muscle mass"... just can't enough of her teachings. She's true at heart and selfless. Love this doctor. She demonstrates a wonderful mindset and a sharp mind.
Fantastic information, as a 75 year old former pro athlete, I continue to believe in the power of discomfort.
Today and for the last 10 years I pedal a bike taxi in SanFrancisco on the Embarcadero.
Pedaling 6 people up to Union square or china town delivers a level of burning discomfort few people ever experience, this helps me maintain surges of growth hormone, besides the randomness of events thrown at me throughout the day keeps my reflexes and therefore sensory mechanisms sharp resulting in more brain plasticity.
On the off days more intra muscular coordination drills working large major muscle groups.
Thanks for the info, as I’m now eating more animal proteins than I have in 20 years of a semi vegetarian lifestyle, with definite greater recovery strength gains and energy.
Okay, you guys have totally got me. I was apprehensive about the Interviewer and the guest but the authenticity and honesty in pursuit of the truth is admirable.
I love this woman! I mean that in a logical and health sense. She's very attractive, but her mind is incredible. Her ability to understand our basic primal health is amazing.
she is full of shit...muscle mass has nothing to do with fighting illnesses...stop thinking with your dick
Wow, what an Excellent video. I've seen several interviews with Dr. Lyon and as a 45 year old male who has tried Every diet on the planet, including being vegan for 2 years (😦😦horrendous), and animal protein is where it's at. I love this woman’s perception on health . Smart and beautiful too💕
Love the balanced approach of explaining hit splashed in with weight training. Skeletal muscle, strong heart, dynamic movements and power programs for endurance is good. As long as we keep the joints healthy and optimal as we age
Thanks for sharing, very helpful as a former carbo-holic. I dabble in the carbs but much less. Now I know why it matters and how it matters.
I have been hearing this stuff for maybe three or four months. Smatterings of it here and there, dribs and drabs, when I heard that it also affected COGNITION, it had my attention. I spend about 7 hours a week in the gym and am trying to literally increase my muscle mass, and I have done so. I have been increasing my lifts right along. Presumably this is regarding more strength Vs. More mass. I do know that you generally get some strength as a result as mass. Plus I do HIIT style training. I used to weigh over a hundred pounds more than now. I still want to lose about 45 more pounds. I am going to follow this stuff so when I tell people that you need to build muscle so you won’t “Lose your marbles” I know where to point them. Amazing concepts, I am blown away! Insufficient muscle leads to fatty deposits. Also she used a term that I have been using when in the context of age and physical conditioning: “Can I improve?”, I always can, and plan on making it one of my life’s goals.
You should stop HIIT, it’s bad for the heart. Moderation is the key word.

Great podcast, great information, really learnt a lot, this was excellent, thankyou !!!
As a geriatrics person, i wish u had addressed mTOR as a risk and contributor to ageing (David Sinclair, et al.) versus mTOR for muscle growth.
David Sinclair talks about it doesn't he?
Sensational conversation! Dr. Lyon you are fierce👊 Respect✅ Your knowledge and no nonsense message for better health is excellent. Thank you and God bless 🙏 ❤️xx
How is she fierce? Did she bite anyone? 😉🤣
Incredible episode; thank you!
Most gorgeous doctor ever
I've been on a pre-diabetic squashing routine. OMAD and some exercies but was neglecting resistance training. Loosing weight, feeling better and results in looks and performance is awesome. Now it's time to build quality muscle. I do endurance, rollerblading and biking. But not resistance much. Need to add that in. It does make sense that dimensia is a diabetic brain. Addage that not moving or stop your brain you get into a bad mental state. We all need to move more and exercise the brain too.
Honesty and integrity…❤️ Very informative and inspiring! This interview should be shared everywhere. Being a life long athlete and interested in splitting hairs regarding training, nutrition, rest and recovery, etc. My goldmine take away from this interview is the amount of protein to consume for my fast breaking meal. I consume enough protein daily, but will now (starting tomorrow) make sure to get that right! Great interview!! I will share now!
What a valuable information! Thank you! 🤗
Excellent, very knowledgeable, very interesting guest! Great interview.
I can honestly say after almost 5 years carnivore my brain is sharper, my memory is better and my rational thinking is not influenced by false fears and feelings.
I saw a slide in my thinking and reasoning skills in my late 40s. I was having issues making life choices and had really fuzzy short term memory issues. Now at 65 and almost 5 years carnivore, I have people coming to me just to get input into their lives. I am being sought out just for advice. This floors me as even 5 years ago I would have considered myself barely smarter than a 5th grader. Carnivore healed my body and my mind.
Carbohydrates were my problem.
No more, I eat none.
Is it for everyone?
I believe so. But 95% of the people I tell about being strict carnivore think om crazy. Yet they refuse to enter into an honest debate, simply because their defense of eating carbohydrates is.... I cant live without them...
But a cold hard fact of life is carbohydrates are NOT essential.
And boys and girls, you cannot escape that FACT.
It’s def not for everybody I think when you blend more of a Weston a price approach we’re you get a mix of things and keep the gut healthy you’ve reached the pinnacle of health
@Dust storm - uh...maybe a bit misinformed, there, about the need for carbs, I think?
Watch Dr. Lyon interview her mentor, Dr.. Donald Layman about carbs. I just watched it. The segment is called, 'The key to carbohydrates."
You will need to be open to the possibility that you may be thinking about some of your new dietary beliefs in the wrong way. S o, I'd recommend you watch that interview with an open mind.
I was a vegetarian for 6 years (animal lover... believing that animal protein is the same as plant protein - not fair to the animals, blah, blah).
And then one day I came upon an interview of Dr. Lyon on Tom Bilyeu's podcast. I felt so insulted (& defensive!) that she was promoting eating animal protein, and lots of it!
But then I realized...'Hey she's talking about me! (skinny fat) a term my own (Navy Seal) son had ascribed to me, and I think that the host in that interview, or maybe someone in the comments section probably used that term also 'skinny fat', I really sat up and took notice! So, instead of switching off the interview, I realized (because she is heavily credentialed and made so much sense, to me,, that... if I didn't change my diet, and immediately I was headed for a future of sarcopenia -at best - and, at worst, a whole host of medical problems.
I felt like you, also. I was getting sick alot and often had brain fog. I've always heavily exercised, but my regimin had gradually fallen off. I just did not have the energy to keep that going consistently.
Dr. Lyon mentioned in that interview that someone like me (I'm paraphrasing here) - but that someone not getting enough quality protein in their diet and feeling 'off' because of it - and then begin eating the amount of protein their body needed - would feel so much healthier as early as their first high protein meal. And I did! And I haven't looked back!
But I also believe that micronutrients in the way of lots of vegetables - including all the 'colorful' veggies, as well as colorful fruits, Plus quality animal protein in good measure, AND resistence training - is the way to go.
Your proclaiming that 'carbs are not essential to humans' - that's pretty over the top, IMO.
Sounds like you may be a 'convert'(?) - from heavy carbs to now NO carbs, and that bc now you feel so great on the 'carnovire diet' (I have to assume that's how you are eating now, the carnivore diet?) - that the pendulum has swung way over in the opposite direction for you.
If I had to guess, I'd say that yes, your overdoing the carbs & ignoring your protein needs heavily contributed to your past brain brain fog .
But your diet was way out of balance then. So, now you've swung way over in the other direction with the belief that all carbs are 'bad' and are unessential for everyone.
Dr. Lyon has never implied that carbs are 'unessential'. I follow her regularly and even took one of her online courses to educate myself about following a muscle-centric diet & lifestyle. And I feel great!
Recall what she has to say here that not all scientists have integrity, and some are very agenda driven. The carnivore diet is one of those fairly new diet trends, and we don't have any data on long term effects, yet, for the Carnivore diet.
Many people, like you, feel great on the Carnivore diet. But how many of them, like you, were unhealthy bc they were neglecting their protein needs and overdoing it on carbs?
Anyway, good for you that you got off the carbs and increased your protein and as a result were able to shake the brain fog (I can def relate to how fantastic it feels to shake the brain fog!) I am grateful I wasn't so 'foggy' that I switched Dr. Lyon off when I first came across Her!
But as far as swinging so far in the other direction and adopting the belief that all carbs are unessential - for everyone - I just do not agree. I think it's an unnecessary extreme.
Did you hear Dr. Lyon say her Navy Seal husband's diet includes around 200g protein & 200g carbs daily? That's an extreme example- as he is constantly training as a Seal - but still...cutting ALL carbs from the diet is not necessary in order to enjoy the benefits of switching to a high protein way of eating.
IMO, completely cutting out ALL carbs from one's diet -long term - could eventually reap the wrong kind of effects.
@@barbarafairbanks4578 Any doctor who claims carbohydrates ate essential is too stupid to breathe.
Why would anyone listen to a word they say?
@Dust storm...WHOA!...just a bit defensive about your extreme diet beliefs, are ya? Hmm, thought I might be communicating with someone with a reasoning mind...
Well, the doctor I was referencing ( Dr. Lyons mentor) Dr. Donald Layman, PhD - a renowned & well published scientist - leading scientific expert on the subject of protein. HIGHLY credentialed, HIGHLY respected in the scientific community.
And YOUR credentials, btw, are? (I'll wait...)

I appreciated what she said about making things harder for yourself as you age. I have a video about that concept on my own channel. I hadn't heard my opinion shared by anyone else before today.
This interview just points up how most people are so ignorant of the facts and rely instead on what the media tells them. I like what the fine doctor said about the emotional element in all of this. That statement explains it all. And the idea that man has always relied on plants for food is laughable.
The muscle volume and brain health research goes back to 1980s at least. We used to think in the '80s and 70s that the link could be attributed to oxygenation of the brain but we're finding out that there's a lot more to it than just that.
Great advise Dr. Lyon much appreciated. I enjoy watching you on youtube and always pick up some new insights that help me stay strong. I'm 59 and now in better shape than 30 years ago and I was in great shape 30 years ago. Hopefully I can say the same thing in 10 years from now.

It was followed by a 1.5K swim towing the log. At he bike transition area I did DT which is 5 RFT of 12 deadlifts, 9 hang power cleans and 6 push jerks, using 135 pound, then o to a 10K mountain bike ride with the 70 pound log strapped to the back pack. At the run transition area, I did a bear complex which consists of 1 power clean , 1 front squat, 1 push press, 1 back squat X 7 for 5 rounds using a 95 pound bar, then of to a 5.5K run on trails with a 70 pound log, and at the finish line there was a buy out of 33 deadlifts at 225 pounds. Fenomenal information. Knowledge is power.
Depending on where you source your knowledge, pea protein for example is super healthy & is not full of estrogen. Research all avenues then you are on the way to true knowledge.
The problem with the good drs assessment (imho) is that it is extremely difficult to train to build muscle when you body is wracked with inflammation. You have to get your inflammation under control or lowered drastically before effective training can be done. Get rid of seed oils from the diet to do this. High omega 6 fattyacids in the diet wreak havoc and inflammation throughout the body.
True, but she *does* advocate v.low-carb / zero-carb diet for that.
@sidfor911truth - 'inflammation' is a double edged sword- and you seem to be WAY over-generalizing, not to mention over-simplifying what it is - where it is- and its effects, imho.
@sidfor911truth - forgot to mention in my previous. comment that, IMHO, of course... - seems to me your solution(s) for ridding the inflammation 'wracked' body of this malady is also way oversimplified.
@@naomiklahn9065 but that is not a total solution. The Hadza tribal people in Africa are thin and fit and eat carbs whenever they find them, in fact, they LOVE honey and eat it hand over fist when they find it. Where do we start ? As far as exercise
amazing, amazing, amazing
We've made food more complicated than it really is, in the US and increasingly more so, in other western countries... Don't eat crap. Eat until you're satisfied, not full/stuffed. Eat a balance of veggies, fruit, protein (eggs/meat/poultry), maybe add some starches like potatoes if you are regularly physically active, or maybe some rice. In a way, your average diet and serving size should be in line with your activity level...
Agree with the issue of muscle.
So valuable is your comparisons re age appropriate diet
