    I discovered your channel today, your videos reminded me of all the survival/primitive living classes, practice, and books I've read. I taught a small survival skills school in Boulder CO for years, one thing led to another and that became a part of my past. It's always felt off in a way and I haven't practiced since then. You reminded me of what's been missing in my life the last 6 years, I owe you one.

    that structure is how a friend and I use to do it all the time but the only thing we did different was built a halfe way shield around three quarters with a quarter opening and a closed top about 2 feet over to top of the tripod and my friend had a lot of cherry trees in his lot so he said that the fish always had a fruity smell but overall still tasted like fish lol. I never ate the fish I always wanted to stirfry and cold smoke the fruits and veggies, above all you did an awsome and excellent job with this video Bob, really a very good job my friend.

      I do bushcraft for the fun of it and to get away from society for a bit... more like a sport or a hobby than for preparation. If you just go outside for a couple hours a day a few days a week and do this stuff for fun it adds up and you would still have the skills in any kind of event, however unlikely it may be.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 7 років тому +2

      Such an event is not unlikely. In fact, a true nationwide disaster than last for many years is inevitable. It's just a matter of when. The odds are rated at one hundred percent. All we can hope for is that it doesn't happen in our lifetime. But it can happen any day. Dirt times is what will save you, but it has to be the real thing where you actually use those skills to shelter and feed yourself. Shelter and feed yourself WELL. Taking
      food and everything else you need to survive into the wild isn't going to help much.

    this, preserving, is probably the most important aspect of long term survival.if shtf, and no electric. i would imagine most folks would perish during the first winter from starvation.

      Siong Wei Wong i agree. in the tropics i can see having year round supplies of fresh food. but where i live. knowing how to preserve is the only way to make it through an entire winter.

    • @muehahahaha
      @muehahahaha 7 років тому +6

      where do you guys live? and do you know the nature there? If iam not catching pike in the spring/summer iam catching trout in the streams in the winter, or big perch in fall/winter, the fish moves about and will be caught most effectively seasonally.
      Many leafy greens, which we now adays sees as weeds, are edible and stay green throughout winter -i live in Southern Scandinavia - it gets cold. Even in arctic conditions there should be an available food supply year round - bear, birds, fish, seals and other sea mammals. And talking about arctic conditions, food preservation isnt as big an issue as in the tropics
      Many roots and seeds should also still be available during winter.

    I am a paraplegic but have a 11 year old son. I am pretty healthy but have to stay that way and survive to finish raising my so if shtf. I am researching and watching as many survival viseos as possible. With today's political climate in America, everyone should be doing like I am. And stock up on everything you possibly can to survive. And do not put all your eggs in one basket.
    Everyone needs to not forget about farming. Get as many (reproducing if possible) seeds, fertilizer, sprays, and starting soil too. Beans have plenty of protein and turnips can survive very harsh winters and can be grown in all seasons. The German army survived off of turnips in the last year of the war. We all need to learn from each other and wait for the dust to settle from the first year. Those that do not prepare will be dead by then and the rest of us "could" survive and thrive in small groups. Without groups or small communities it will nearly impossible for us to survive long term. After all, we are merely humans.

    I personally use pine to smoke and can fish all the time, I think it gives the best flavor. Where I live we don’t have mesquite readily available. However we do have mountain mahogany which is really good when I can get it. Also the main thing in smoking is to get rid of moisture that is what gives mold the opportunity to grow and spoil food. But if you have salt that also helps a lot. Great video!!! Love the oven. God bless!!

PS I uploaded a couple of new vids recently one is called "Instant noodles with Mideastern smoked meats " I actually tried to do some fishing that day but the current was so damn stron kept ripping the bait off the hooks so we decided to do a quik vid instead .... the other it has nothing to do with the outdoors but youre welcome to chek it out man its Easter in our city ... take care bud and keep em coming ...

    If you smoked those fish correctly and for long enough, which it certainly seems like you did, then they should be perfectly ok to eat as is, aside from maybe rinsing as much of the salt off as possible. As for mitigating the wind and concentrating the smoke around the food, to keep things in a more natural state, a good way to do that is to get some thickly leafed branches and hang them around the food so as to trap the smoke around it and create an environment more conducive to smoking. I don't know what kind of trees would have branches that would best suit this purpose in your area, but I've seen people use this very same method and shelter the food with banana leafs and palm fronds to block the wind and concentrate the smoke around the food. I doubt these types of plants grow in your area, but I'm sure that there would be something ideally suited for this purpose somewhere in your area.

      Yup Yup, og history of salt trade here in Texas. Different types from different sources have their strong and weak points depending on use. I''ll have a series on the different acquisition methods here in the next few months. Needs to be shown, so that the ignorant trolls that do not understand the importance of salt in long term survival can move on to something else.

    Awesome video, thanks for the info. It`s bad I live in Europe and the landscape is totally different ...

      Landscape in Europe is a bushcrafter's dream :P Unless you live in Germany where you have nothing but cultivated land. Even then there are still some wild areas, though few.

      "Germany where you have nothing but cultivated land." Depends what you mean by 'cultivated', there is a huge amount of forest, but I agree there's not much you could call 'wild' as in northern Canada, for example.

      Europe is way better for bushcraft if you can find a forest tho....

    A few questions: What did you mean alternate in layers of salt? "salt, fish, salt, fish" Roughly how long would these be good for? And you said even after doing this, you would need to cook them before eating correct? Great video

    As I clicked this video, I wondered " *Is he a prepper?* "
    Then I read the description:
    " *This should be seen as more of a post apocalyptic option* "
    and had the answer to my question.

    Hello Bob. We're several years down the line. I was looking for some jerkin' vids just to see if there was some tips out there I was missing. Out of the 10 billion survival vids here there is almost none which absolutely nearly blew me away. Ought to be Survival 100. Go figger.
    All that said I hadn't thought of smoking fish. It's still done here and there of course, but not so much here. You did extra good! But we didn't see you make a stew from your haul. Nobody in my state would eat a shad. Ha. Super thanks for your presentation! Upvoted and subscribed.

    Love that natural rock oven! Not a huge fan of the time lapse in the body of the video though.

  •  7 років тому +7

    Looks good. I watched a video before yours, these people were cooking on a rock over a flame. I instantly thought, why not build a whole oven to fix those cold spots. And here I watch your video, just what I had in mind!!! And hehheh, I am a city boy born and raise in Seattle. But I got range of skills.
    Oh ya, and you can build a little mini farm. Even in Seattle, I grow tomatoes, green onions, garlic, jalapenos, squash pumpkins (what ever them things are called). thai peppers. I got family in yakima that grows like a mini farm. Jalapenos, tomatoes, and more. And their friend's let me take boxes of apples and potatoes when I leave to go back home. We dig up the potatoes our selves.

    Do you need to worry about cross contaminating the salt with the raw fish? Thanks for the tips, I'll remember this and use this knowledge if I ever get stranded.
