The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints said in a press release that they are going to keep it a historical site and open to the public for free. So awesome!
Just saw you on CWIC. I really felt touched by your request to not spike the ball by LDS members. I appreciate your sincerity and kindness.
We lived in the Kirtland area for 10 years and just moved away. We are so excited for this! I always loved the tours with Community of Christ. They have done an amazing job as caretakers and preservers of the temple. It's not been a cheap or easy task. There's a pretty high standard to keep up going forward. I miss being there so much!
As a former RLDS/CofChrist member, then LDS, now inactive, I can say it was just a matter of time. At least the LDS has the finances to keep the structure sound. Hopefully this will be a inclusive effort by the LDS church to share this sacred space.
The agreement ensures that all of the sites transferred are going to remain open to the public.
One thing that is also good, is now that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will not charge to be able to visit the Temple and or any of the other historical sites. The Church of Jesus Christ has never charged and won't charge to visit any historical site from Northeast USA to CA where the Mormon Battalion historical site is located. I have not seen anything but respect from members of the LDS Church towards the Community of Christ and all they have done to keep these sites in good prepare and upkeep.
The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints said in a press release that they are going to keep it a historical site and open to the public for free.
The Church News article said that it will remain an historic site and will be open to public tours.
But for how long, the church did not say,
My family sacrificed to help build this Temple.. so happy it landed with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints.
Mine did too. Prayers are answered.
Church statement says it will be a historic site and not turned to an active Temple
For now, I believe the temple will be dedicated in the future.
@bensonjarvis5025 I hope not, that would be terrible
Steve, thanks for this excellent breaking news story, notwithstanding the heart attack it nearly gave me!
This is awesome news. It has been and will continue to be well taken care of.
Originally I was disappointed to hear it wouldn’t become an operational temple (I only wanted it to be used the same way it was when it was first dedicated) but after hearing your guys’ views on it, I am glad it’s staying a historical site.
Thank you
It was never meant to be that kind of a temple but rather a temple to receive the keys
The announcement is now on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints newsroom
The announcement is on KSL news and Church News site. His heritage , as he sees it, is still there. He didn't own the site in the first place so it isn't like he lost anything. The church announced that it will be open to the public and not be a working temple. Before panicking, it is wise to read the public announcement.
There is the worry that anytime a new person buys property, that they may make changes. I'm sure the man in the interview has valid concerns. But the press release by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints states it will continue to preserve it as a historic and tourist site opened to the public.
What an amazing scoop! Congrats Steven, couldn't happen to a better person.
Not a big scoop. It was announced already on LDS Church News and KSL news.
@@rutht2023 Steven posted his video 30m before the Church posted theirs.
@@ohheytherefriend I read it on Church news at 1 PM. Updates to the story have been posted since then. The speaker probably saw it there and immediately called.
@@rutht2023no, we were an hour or so ahead and I drove an hour to get there at the temple lot, and stopped at home to shave and put on a suit and bow tie.
The Kirkland Temple did not have endowments. That started later in Nauvoo.
They called the foot washing ceremony there an "endowment", but it was materially different from the later masonic-based endowment ceremony introduced in Nauvoo.
President Nelson said the temple will remain historic.
Just my 2 cents... I honestly don't see any scenario where the Kirkland temple is renovated into a regular temple. I just don't as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints....
It serves a far greater purpose as a historical site and honestly its too small and not designed for the capacity nor the blueprint for a modern temple work either. Even if they built a bunch of it underneath like they are with the salt lake and provo city center temples... the kirtland temple is more of the original assembly room in purpose and historic building than a temple/ endowment house/ house of the lord in the modern sense.
One might argue so was the provo tabernacle in similar status... but that one was burnt down and gutted, the tabernacle part was really not needed in that capacity any more with the advent of the internet, and a new temple in the area was needed and honestly it was originally designed in such a way it looks purpose built to be a temple. With the Kirkland temple, its the real deal original place where prophecies were fulfilled and taking anything away from that originality and historical significance seems Counter intuitive and utterly pointless. I would sooner see a new temple built nearby rather than this one get overhauled. It just doesn't make any sense any way you look at it to do so.
There are plenty of other operational temples to be had and made into the future, but there is only one kirtland temple made this way, why change that?
I know my opinion won't convince others who are skeptical, but that's how I see things. Its just too valuable the way it currently is to change (other than to restore it AS IS for maintenance purposes)
Wow! This hit me like a ton of bricks. I was just there in the spring last year and this is miraculous.
Miracle or the owner is in desperate need of funds to pay for the retirements of their employees?
@@boysrus61 - both!
The Kirtland temple will remain a historic site
So happy for the Community of Christ! Good for historic preservation as well...
Will the Kirtland Temple be converted into a functioning Latter-day Saint temple?
No. The Kirtland Temple will be maintained and presented as a historic building that is open to the public. President Russell M. Nelson announced a temple in Cleveland in April 2022, and the Church released its site address in December 2022 and a rendering in July 2023.
I can say with personal knowledge that ALL of the moldings, fixtures, door knobs, latches, frames, furniture and other historical features of the Salt Lake Temple have been preserved and are meticulously being restored and will still be there when the restoration work is completed.
With the Kirtland Temple, this is truly wonderful day!!!
Will the tobacco spittoon vases that were in the original temple remain?
@@user-rd3cl7lg2f I think most of those were removed around February 27th, 1833. 😜
Sad if true IMO. I'm going to have to try to verify this
Except for the original murals that were all permanently removed , of course ….
@@user-rd3cl7lg2fIf you look at where and when Doctrine and Covenants 89 took place, it's safe to assume they removed the spitoons from the temple before the saints left Kirtland. So, sadly, you're probably not going to find any there.
It's still sacred ground.... no matter who ownes it.
Great perspective
3,360 and now posted in Mormon Stories Podcast Community...
So glad I have a trip planned there in a month.
Wow...I walked around this building a couple years ago with a friend, and we lamented how run down it was and how awesome it would be if the CoJCoLDS would buy it, and presumably restore it. This is wonderful news.
What was "run down" about it? It's all original and it's almost 200 years old. It's one of the few buildings that has retaimned all its original fabric...Except, ironically, the fabric divider curtains that used to hang between the benches.
That's very interesting. I'm not a stake holder other than growing up in Independence. But I've generally thought the Community of Christ has always handled their historic sites well. I'm hoping the new owners do as well, but we'll see.
This rumor has been brewing for some time and is a huge positive- these historic sites will have greater funds now to preserve them, and will become free to public enjoyment in the hands of a church with the funds to allow such. The Kirkland Temple will not be made an operating modern temple. I already had my first visit there planned for April the weekend before the Eclipse! Very excited!
Naysayers will be upset and disagree, but the Kirkland Temple has returned home.
I agree.
Funny how the Morms discount the CofC. Why do you think CofC owned Kirtland temple? The "court's finding of facts" in 1880 held that the RLDS church was the rightful owner. Relative to those times the Kirtland Temple was just sold to an apostate uncle.
Awesome news!!! We’re in the right church guys!!!
Way to be a sore winner... geeze... show some compassion to our spiritual cousins who are mourning the loss of their sacred structure.
Our prophet said we would see miraclez and if this isn't one I don't know what is.
There have been chapels up for sale in recent years. They sold the printer's copy of the Book of Mormon to the LDS church. That went for over $35 million. The Community of Christ must be in financial trouble.
We are not in trouble, but in the next few years we would have been with the trend of the western world decreasing membership across denominations.
@@Spj806 My city of 600,000 people lost its last Community of Christ church building. They sold the chapel last year in 2023. There is not even a weekly meeting of the handful of members left. The nearest Community of Christ chapel is one hour drive away in Guelph, ON. The Toronto location is still going strong with a weekly broadcast online. The pastor also does a great history broadcast each week.
@@user-og2wt3le4j We attend a congregation that's an hour away, we have 12-15 people on a good Sunday. We attend GPNW and Rock Mountain Mission centers online programs on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. Yes, are are struggling in North American (as are most churches) but thriving in other areas. The Catholic Church in our area shut down 62 of their 132 parishes and combined them. We have been worried about numbers and finances, so I welcome this sale, we can use those funds well into the future to help us navigate this current social change in the the US and Canada. The agreement allows for all of the properties to stay open to the public, so we can continue to go see the historic sites, the part we lose is it will now be the LDS's story to tell, and I hope they include us like we have them! I also think it's great we have such a relationship, 30 years ago we were constantly add odds.
Community of Christ did NOT sell the Smith Family graves.
At the time of the announcement they also announced it will not be used as a Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints it will be a historical site and will open March 25th as a historical site and free of the charge to everyone!
Woohooooooo truly a massive blessing
OH my heart.
Wait a minute!!!....shouldn't we hear from Community of Christ headquarters?????
It’s in church news.
The Church of Jesus Christ and the Community of Christ made a joint announcement.
How does this dude have $100 mil !?
I doubt he has it himself, but he had a way to come up with it.
He said in one interview he had a group of investors to raise the money
Absolutely wonderful.
Lifting the Kirtland temple up and building a parking lot underneath?
Or they turn it into an Amazon storehouse.
There’s been one or two renovation projects where the buildings require new foundations. It’s common to have parking below ground as these sights are on smaller lots.
@@LatterDayPaul-sl5kw Not realistic in this case.
Any relationship to Doug Hajicek ( TV producer) from the history channel “monster quest “ series ?
I’ve just heard about this very devastating news. I say that because those of us who are not LDS I believe have just had our heritage sold again to pay for the pensions for an organisation that to me at least b seems to be divesting itself from the history and faith of our restoration. The sad thing is the highest bidder was always going to win. This has nothing to do with God and everything to do with money. Those who need it and those who have it. Those of us that don’t have it are now going to be beholden to the ones that do. This is not a good day for the restoration family at all. I’ve seen that the LDS don’t plan on turning it in to a working temple, thank goodness but let’s see how long they can resist the urge to do it. Not only have they now taken possession of the first ever temple built in this last dispensation they have their hands on The Inspired Version manuscript. I just hope the power they wield is not against their brothers and sisters in the wider restoration. Whatever you may think this is not a good day.
Almost as if the Lord would want his church to have ample resources to obtain and care for property.
The people of other churches were always beholden to the Community of Christ to have access to the church sites they owned. It is not anything different. They have already said it will be a historic site and open to the public. Don't worry. It will be ok.
it will be ok in a lords hand
As an active member of the salt lake-based church, I fully agree. While the church has agreed not to turn it into a dedicated space like our other temples now, there’s nothing preventing this from happening decades or even centuries from now… and as we’ve seen, the lds church has proven to be very willing to compromise historic architecture for practical concerns (see the removal of murals in many of the historic temples, for instance)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings regarding the purchaseof these HistoricBuildingsand artifacts. It has been an eye-opening experience for me today. I think for the first time in my life, I've seen my cousins of the restoration. I think I have felt much the way you do today regarding your church and mine and the possion of these Historic treasures. The sad thing is I didn't see "you". Today the Kirtland Temple changed "stuardships" if you will. I can appreciate that this is a very hard day for many of my cousins of the restoration. I have no say in its present of future- however I commit to do better to see the person on the other side of the metaphorical table. ❤
He feels this passion about the historicity due to man’s short-sighted view. Gods will and his promises will be fulfilled.
What do you mean by that exactly?
@@weirdlanguageguy He said in the video he felt like someone sold the White House after selling the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. His connection to these items is very short sighted. Bottom line, it not His will or any other man. Gods will for that once very sacred building, is just that. Gods will and if God wanted it to be a fully functional temple again, that is what it would be…to fulfill promised revelations in the fulfillment of the Gathering of Israel.
WOW!
Be careful about trusting someone with a bowtie…
Turns out he was right.

Mormon book review, scoop! Excellent :-)!! Thank you!
Who was it that said "you can buy anything in this world for money"? Dang, I forget. On the plus side, it's a win-win. CofC gets the needed cash, CoJCoLDS gets some prize historical sites and an explination to their members of what they are doing with their 150B stock & cash fund.
BIG news! Thank you for sharing.
yeah, the Mormon church has been wanting the Kirkland Temple forever, and they finally got it.
That is the safest news ever😢
Safest for the temple and other historic pieces’ welfare indeed. 👍
This is amazing news!!
sad that leaders are worried about their retirement accounts over other things
It was not their retirement accounts per se. It was obligations to employees
@@danieldosanjos8126 some of the top leaders have stated things like this in the past was retirement accounts for the top leaders.

Steven I agree with you my friend, but this is huge, and now they have the Joseph Smith Bible also. I dont think people realise what is going on here...
@@andrieslouw8256 it's huge for those who care for such things, I do not. It has nothing to do YHWH plans on how He will take of the problems that Gentiles have allowed being controlled behind the scene of Moon Child / AntiChrist who will reign for the 5th kingdom before the rock carved without human hands comes to bring the fire and brimestone that YHWH will cause the Mighty and Strong One to call forth. These sellings are a distraction for the remnant.
Did he say who bought it? I must have missed it if he did. They seem concerned that the larger restored church did.
I believe he did say that is was sold to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
We are really going to have to start tithing 16% now, to help make up for the 190 Million dollars spent! 😆
I respect whatever the new owners want to do with it. Would be cool to see it remain a historic site
Not a snowball's chance the LDS church will leave it long term. They want the property not the building. The property has historic value to them, not the building.

So the start of the last days are truly here, now the prophecy must be fullfilled that the Community of Christ (RLDS) must become part of the LDS Church and the blood decendant of Joseph Smith must become prophet, then that will be the end times. This is HUGE news.
Why do you think that???
I am interested in what you are speaking of. I don't know the prophecy - please share.
Hmmm, you seem like you already know what he's saying?
Well I am back
I have one question: what motivated The Community of Christ Church to sell this temple in the first place?
The community of Christ church has financial deficiency that's why it sold it!
They need the money. They don't have billions of dollars surplus in tithing like the lds church.
They need money
Have you read the title of the video?
The church was always going to get it back. Does this not prove anything yet?.....
They don't own the Temple Lot, Jesus ain't coming back yet.
Yes, the lds is rich. This proves it.
It proves the LDS has become disgustingly rich on the backs of the poor. Read your scriptures.
Malachi 3:8-12… you’re bitter for the church of Jesus Christ for practicing the law of tithing….rich or poor willingly give. Sorry the church has managed it funds well and are financially secure.
@LatterDayPaul-sl5kw "willingly give" No, it's enforced by the temple recommend system. If you don't pay, you cannot visit your relatives wedding, etc.
I don't believe a word President Nelson utters.
Me either. All 15 of those businessmen in apostles’ clothing are liars to the core.
Most comments are fairly respectful but there’s always people like you. Bitter, angry and insignificant. As the Church leaders always do, they will take the high road.
@@LatterDayPaul-sl5kw Bitter? No. Realistic? Yes. Honestly, I think Brigham Young took a church that had real potential and turned it into what many see it as today. You know the old saying "The church is perfect, it's the leadership that sucks!" But you believe what and how you want, because that is free agency. My agency just took another fork in the road.
I met John Hajicek 20-years ago, online, he was part of a very tiny, offshoot LDS church. We debated about the secession of the leadership of the church after Joseph Smith's death. I don't believe Hajicek's claim of being able to raise $100 million to buy the Kirtland temple, but if he did, he would have charged A LOT to tour it as it would be a money maker for him, not a sacred site of any kind. Great news that the Church bought back the Temple and will restore it to its original glory. The Community of Christ, Hajicek's church, and all offshoot LDS church's, are in deep debt. and will close soon. PLEASE STOP using the word Mormon, other than the Book of Mormon and prophets' Mormon. We're The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Thanks. I am still Mormon like Joseph Smith said he was. Some people call me the Last Mormon.

The church of Jesus Christ of latter day, saints has has a huge charity effort spanning the entire globe helping in myriads

i assume you spend a lot on orphans and widows. noooiooot
The church first and foremost is a stock holder. It funneled $200 billion into Ensign Peak Advisors and its shady shell companies. The charitable efforts are peanuts and tiny in comparison. More charitable efforts could be made by confiscating the assets, giving them to a random holding, and doing charity just on the interest alone. The lds church is hoarding money. It will soon become an Amazon warehouse. 😂
Nope. If it became a warehouse it would become a Bishop's Storehouse. But that will never happen because of its historical value.
@@micheleh3851 The focus of the church is more on profit. They bought an Amazon storehouse in London. They didn't buy suitable ward buildings in the UK. So the focus is less on the wards, more on the investment side.
Weird comment. If the church needed a ward building, they would just buy or build one-easily. Buying a warehouse is irrelevant. You have no point.
@charlesmendeley9823 The Church hasn't announced yet what they will do with that building or property in England. Keep watching and see how they use it to build God's kingdom. A warehouse doesn't generate income, so it's not for investment.
