Monster attack and GDF were some of the best underrated game I played as a teen, overcoming the campaign with my friend is still a really great memory.
This entry was ported to PSP some years ago. ISO hackers discovered an English script in the code, but it stayed Japan-only. It's getting a Vita remake though!
Hey Mark, when are you gonna do that review for Mr. Bones on the Sega Saturn? you promised you would do a review for that game since your Kolibri review some time ago : (.
I love GDF. This is a game I imported back in the day and loved. Too bad Mark didn't mention the PaleWing stuff. Playing as her makes the game SO much more fun. But graphic whores stay away. This is not a pretty game nor a game that cares at all about framerate. Expect the average framerate to be about 18fps, occasionally dipping down to single digits when things get crazy. This IS only the PS2 afterall. That said, if you like EDF you won't give a shit about graphics/stability. This game is just too much fun.
@@ezragoldberg3132 Eh....not really. Global Defense Force is one of the many Simple 2000 series of budget titles made for PS2, each retailing for 2000 yen (about $18US) when new. As a budget title, attention wasn't ever focused on graphics. The game looks so-so and its performance can and does dip way down when there are dozens of enemies and explosions on screen. But the game is FUN. It's simply a whole lot of fun to play. But these days, I would recommend the Vita version called Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Planet Space. It's better looking, has more features, and it runs smoother. It's also not 50Hz region locked like Global Defense Force.
+Richard Savings It's a great port and they've jacked up the campy scifi to 11 with a whole mess of new dialog making it a pseudo-sequel to 2017. Also they decided to rename the aliens the Buggernauts in the Vita release. Buggernauts.
+Richard Savings What kind of changes do you want to make? The Vita has system level control customizations. Go to settings and scroll down to Accessibility, scroll down and tick the "Add to Quick Menu" and then go into Button Assignments and enable the checkbox in there. Then you can open the Customize Button Assignments bit and you can swap the controls around almost anyway you want. You enable the Add to Quick Menu option so that you can easily turn custom assignments on and off by holding the PS Button and enabling or disabling the custom button assignments at the bottom of that menu.
There's a port of this game on PSP, but it's Japanese only. Still, it's simple enough that you really don't need to know the language to play the game. The lack of a second circle pad, however, can make aiming a bit awkward. I also experienced a lot of slowdown in the more intense moments of the game.
Wait, I had a PS2 fat way back in 2003, and it was NTSC. So were most of my games. But I remember having one blue disk game, was that PAL? If so, how did it work? My current PS2 Slim can't play PAL, so how did that one play it?
No, the blue disks were PS2 CDs. Don't confuse those with PAL games - they're only in blue boxes is all. PAL games' disks are exactly the same as the NTSC-U/J ones.
Great game, although you can almost feel the PS2 struggling to keep up with so much stuff going on at once.EDF 2025 on the 360 on the other hand, doesn't.But this is a fun game to add to your PS2 collection, if you still own one.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Monster Attack is EDF1. Global Defence Force is EDF2. Earth Defense Force 2017 is EDF3. Earth Defense Force 2025 is EDF4. EDF4.1 is a remake of EDF4. The other EDF game(s) are spin-offs.
Awesome game! I have it on PSP, it takes a bit of getting used to because of the PSP controls, but it's awesome on that too! I just wish it was made available on PS2 in North America! Uncool, SCEA. Uncool.
I know this the PAL version but I have a fully backward compatible PS3 and I believe the PS3 is region free. Will my PS3 be able to play PAL PS2 games. It plays all the NTSC PS2 games and it can play PAL PS3 games so can it play PAL PS2 games?
Get the Japanese version. This doesn't look like there is much reading, and there's probably something over at Gamefaqs that can help translate the text and story parts in Japanese.
sadly the region locking still counts for the ps2 titles played on the ps3 if you have a ps2 you can try to softmod your console with freemcboot(as long as you dont have a 9xxxx serie of the ps2') and use GSM to force NTSC onto your console and than play the backup copy via ESR. that way PAL never kicks in and the game runs on your TV
Who would wear a miniskirt into battle? Why I would ofcourse. Who WOULDN'T!? I mean come on! How else are you going to give the troops a moral boost with an upskirt shot.
I often like to screw around in games, just to see what you can do that the designers never intended. On the third level of this game, I decided to see what it would take to destroy absolutely EVERYTHING on the map. I thought maybe there was a destruction limit to the level where the game would stop letting you destroy stuff because it has to keep track of all of it. Nope. :) I killed most of the ants so that the rest would leave me alone for a while, then went to the other side of the map and started blowing stuff up. I figured it would be fairly easy. Boy was I wrong. All total, it probably took me over two hours. I destroyed every building, every fence, every telephone pole, every street light and every tree, even the ones in the distance, beyond the normally accessible parts of the map. In the end, I was left with a patch of wasteland surrounded by nothingness. It looked pretty surreal. Toward the end, the last ant became a problem since it insisted on chasing me, even though I wasn't bothering it. My biggest surprise was when I fired a rocket into some trees in the distance and was rewarded with a huge explosion. I didn't even realize that there were large oil/gas tanks on the edge of the map. :)
@@georginaK21 I always do stuff like that. The game Red Faction includes a demo room where you can play with the destructible environment, so naturally, I tried to use explosives to blow up every inch of the wall and to dig a tunnel as far out as I could. I discovered that there's a limit to how much you can destroy, after which, the game won't let you destroy anything else. When I played the demo for Thief: Deadly Shadows on a friend's computer, the first thing I did, much to my friend's annoyance, was follow a cat around and see if I could kill it (yes, I could). Playing Postal 2, I would go through sections of the town and kill absolutely everyone, just to see if I could. If a game lets you do it, I'll usually try it. :)

1. Buy a Vectrex
2. Play Truxton
3. Pick up a used copy of Earth Defense Force 2017
DON'T FORGET EL CAMINO
A port of Global Defence Force (AKA EDF2) was released on Vita everywhere.
Pretty damn impressive considering the hardware. The ps2 is just full of suprises.
If I don't meet 2 of the 3 requirements listed around the 2:30 mark, do I have to unsubscribe? I really don't want to unsubscribe...

Huh, it lags like crazy on this too. I thought my copy was messed up or something.
i love how mark bussler typing "EDF" in youtube description for about an minutes.
EDF MY ASS!!!
Someone help me please. What is the tune in the intro with the brew sippin m n m ??
I got this when it came out but just stuck it on a shelf - i think i need to ACTUALLY PLAY IT!
Hey Mark, when are you gonna do that review for Mr. Bones on the Sega Saturn? you promised you would do a review for that game since your Kolibri review some time ago : (.
Emulating this ASAP at our next videogames club. Can't wait
Finally this game will arrive in my post in a few days (sealed)!
EDF 2525 is pretty much an awesome mashup of 2017 and this game.
I played and own Truxton... but don't have EDF or a Vextrex sadly.
I love GDF. This is a game I imported back in the day and loved. Too bad Mark didn't mention the PaleWing stuff. Playing as her makes the game SO much more fun.

Like some other commentator said, the game looks pretty damn good for a PS2 game!

I've been watching CGR less than six months, but I have also failed to do any of your three requirements of a fan! Oh, woe is me!
And now this is coming to Vita in the form of Earth Defense Force 2 Invaders from Planet Space. I am excited.
+Richard Savings It's a great port and they've jacked up the campy scifi to 11 with a whole mess of new dialog making it a pseudo-sequel to 2017. Also they decided to rename the aliens the Buggernauts in the Vita release.
Buggernauts.
Amiculi Buggernauts? Oooooooh the possibilities of all the jokes. I need this now. Come on February.
+Amiculi That added title "Invaders From Planet Space" and the fact that they call them Buggernauts just makes me love this game so much more.
Starscream Same here. I wish I could tell them to patch in control customisation though. Every other game has it but this.

Happy EDF Halloween!
Phew glad I picked up EDF 2017 a few months back! Would not want to spend more time in intergalactic prison!
1 out of 3 so far...
[plugs Truxton cart into Genesis]
HAPPY HALLOWEEN
even you can see the framerate dying, its still amazing this runs on the ps2. damn i want this

Man if I had seen this at a Gamestop back in the day! Would've been awesome to have had a NA release.

Reminds me of the N64 Classic "Body Harvest".
I'm going to consider buying a 32x and playing Cosmic Carnage as extra credit, then.
what if i haven't done any of those things? should i self-terminate?
hi .. i want to download this game on my computer but i don't know how ... can anyone help me quickly ??? 😢
مروان العلوي
Why don't you "download" a copy from ebay and play it properly.
Out of those 3 things I have only played Truxton... I got work to do.
I've got more work than you; I haven't done ANY of the three!!
Still need to get an EDF game... They hold decent value and I'm cheap so that's the complication. lol
Can't wait for the coop chaos.
I own a Vectrx and several EDF games, as well as GDF, can I still be in this gamers club? I will, I promise, pick up Truxton!
Awesome! do you know the right order of EDF games? I've only played 4.1
You'd have to look at the wiki page I think
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Monster Attack is EDF1.
Global Defence Force is EDF2.
Earth Defense Force 2017 is EDF3.
Earth Defense Force 2025 is EDF4.
EDF4.1 is a remake of EDF4. The other EDF game(s) are spin-offs.
ok where do i get a vectrex and truxton?
CGR fo life

Who would wear a miniskirt into battle? Why I would ofcourse. Who WOULDN'T!? I mean come on! How else are you going to give the troops a moral boost with an upskirt shot.
WHY I DIDN'T BUY THIS BACK IN THE PLAYSTATION 2 TIMES?
DAAAAMN MEEE!!!
To not release that masterpiece here is CRIMINAL. They must be afraid of money.
I think EDF2 is better than 2017. EDF2 is my favorite in the series
GDF beats EDF. Pale wing, and loads more enemies, like the caterpillar thing.
