As a worker in the railroad industry, I have a few comments:
    1) It's surprising how accurate the game is for a Nintendo 64 game. Train operations are definitely more complicated and have A LOT more intricacies, but in a simplified manner it's impressive.
    2) Signaling & ATS has way more of an impact that you may realize. For most transit authorities, they designate tracks for a Normal & Reverse direction. When you had to stop for that train coming at you, that was because that train was diverted by the dispatcher/controller to go reverse running, usually due to a piece of track or a switch that's out of service or being maintained. ATS usually stands for "Automatic Train Stop" (which is why you'd stop automatically) but also has other meanings as well from authority to authority.
    3) I hate crossings. There's so many nuances and safety items that go along with them. Sometimes they tie directly into if signals can clear. A train would never know if a car was stuck in the middle of a crossing unless it was magically radioed to him in enough time to stop.
    4) You really don't want to be a train engineer/conductor. The hours are awful and you have to meet your times or you're yelled at by your supervisors. I've also heard horror stories from engineers of times when people who are either fouling or on the track as they're coming by. It's one job you just don't want.

Japanese railways are actually a lot like that. Many now have gates on the platform, so the driver needs to stop within centimetres of the correct position! Arriving within a few seconds of the advertised time is expected too. It's amazing.

Fun fact: at least for freight trains, you are definitely under no obligation legally or by rule to avoid hitting vehicles or people in foul of the tracks at crossings etc. Obviously the engineer might want to avoid it, but dumping the train (max braking power) can cause you to derail which is not a risk worth taking. Stay off the tracks. By the time you know you’re gonna smash a car or something, it’s often too late to stop safely.

The feeling of those perfect stops is so much better than it looks. Elite Dangerous is similar where you fly in space at like 5x the speed of light and need to go through a similarly long and unforgiving decelleration period whenever you want to land at a space station. Stopping is hard when you're moving fast and can't slam on the brakes!

Apparently he played for 3 days straight and then vowed to never play it again because he needed to keep doing more sweepstakes.
