Guys awesome video. Regarding those black clips you were fighting, in case you haven't already sussed them out, the tiny little circular insert you can see in the middle of the "head" of the clip, you (gently) push that deeper into the clip, (so in towards the van body if that makes sense..don't go too hard though as the pin will fall out the back), once you've pushed the pin back, the trim tool you were using will work. You'll see the pin is completely removable so that you can reinstall. You probably already encountered this but..in case you haven't, now you know :) The pin is what splays the rear of the clip out and holds it in place.
This series is so incredibly helpful! I watched it and many others while planning for our build, but now we’re actually working on it (just about to remove the side trim :) ), yours is the one I keep coming back to. Thank you so much!
Thank you for your excellent vlog. I had to the same to my mwb sprinter today. The tools you recommended did the job perfectly. The mistake you made in not removing the rear corner trims was for me a lesson remembered. So much learned as a result of your vlog. A big grateful thank you.
Great to hear that you found it useful and it’s really nice of you to let us know too. That’s exactly why we try to include our mistakes as well, they’re probably more useful than anything else! Thanks again 😀
Very helpful, I couldn’t understand where the moisture was coming from, It has started corroding on my 2017 model, hopefully I’ve caught it in time. Thankyou
When you refinish that bit of rust you found (at 3:43 et seq.), you really need to sand it all the way down to bare metal, much farther than you did. That rust will be back. Once down to bare metal, treat the metal with some Ospho or other phosphoric acid solution intended for the purpose. This will reduce any remaining iron oxide to iron phosphate. Then paint over that with some zinc primer, and only then put on your white top coat. Other than that, thanks much for showing how to remove these flashy but annoying panels. Mine fill with dirt and dust all the time, and I see now that simply flushing them with water will not solve the real problem. Mercedes really should have done better on this.
Again thanks for the tips and video! I collected a full bucket of water after unclothed the "pipe" I have a built-up of moisture in the lower part of the van no apparent liking what so ever it's coming from the bottom! Very helpful 👍👍👍👍
Those bumper clips at the back are push pin clips. You push the little pins in the middle in first then you can pull the clip out. You probably figured this out now 🤘🏽
Hope you don't mind me offering some helpful advice regarding the rust spot. After clearing as much flaky paint as possible you should add some Kurust before adding the Hammerite. It turns rusty metal solid. It's well worth the extra step.
No we really appreciate it. We’ve got a couple of new rust spots that we need to treat so will definitely get some of that stuff. We hadn’t heard of it before and the hammerite alone hasn’t done as good a job as we thought it would. Thank you for the tip 🙏
@@TheWholeWorldorNothing Glad to give something back for all the tips I've picked up from watching you guys. Kurust is actually made by Hammerite so working in conjunction with the paint it will give much better protection. Did you remove the trim inside the back doors? That will have a ton of dirt under it.
Ah that makes sense then, we’re just waiting for some decent weather then we’re going to get some of that stuff and do some extra rust proofing. Yeah we removed that trim, you’re right there was tonnes of grime! It’s amazing the places the dirt gets into.
Absolutely fantastic video, as we bough our Sprinter recently, we will definitely look to take out all the trims, fight the rust and use the sealant. Very helpful, thank you guys 👍
Heya thanks for this video, where exactly do I put the sealant on the plastic clips though? In a circle around the poppy out bits? Please let me know asap if poss!
No problems! This is a very well known problem with sprinter vans if that’s the make you’re looking at and one of the first things everyone says to address 👍
Did you seal the hard to remove (you used the back of a hammer!) black parts from the back bumper, when you put it back in? Or just the white clips from side trim?
@@TheWholeWorldorNothing its a 2016, I have plenty of experience of rust being the proud owner of a Transit! It might be nice to Raptor paint the trim when its off. Very impressed by the methodical approach with your build, I am very much of the 'unscrew random things' way of thinking.
Similar year to our 2015 then so hopefully you won’t find anything too bad lurking under there! Not heard of raptor paint but assuming it’s some sort of protective paint - top idea, might have done that ourselves if we’d known about it. Haha yeah there were plenty of times during the build we took that approach 😀
Great video, but please consider or test and report your own experience. Butyl rubber makes a better seal than silicone. This is that same tenacious stuff you find holding plastic vapor barriers onto door panels. It never dries out, and is not time-sensitive as silicone glue.
Great question. And we haven’t got a clue unfortunately! But it’s doubtful since it’s been a well known issue for many years and they’ve not bothered to remedy it!
@@TheWholeWorldorNothing Thank you for replying! ☺ I have contacted Mercedes SO MANY times and they will not answer me in this. I heard from others to Hammerite the underneath and A&B columns, once a year! My father is Jamaican and mother was English. I can see the resemblanse! ☺ God bless you and your travels!
No problem! Sorry we can’t be of more help, it’s not something we’ve ever researched actually because we only looked into our specific model. My mum’s from Grenada and my dads from England so other way round 😀 And we actually need to do some more work underneath the trim this summer because we’ve had a rust spot develop again - once a year is probably about right 👍🏾
@@TheWholeWorldorNothing Oh, well done! ☺ I've never been to the Caribbean but have ALWAYS felt so proud even though I never knew my birth parents; I ☺ God is my Father now! God bless you both and happy furure trips!
Haha, it was all in there! But we had just had about a week of torrential rain so it had plenty of opportunity to fill itself up 🤣 Yorkshire summers eh!
Sprinter , could be great van but RUST.... better sell it out untill is too late and take one of Master/Movano /Peugeot/Citroen which has galvanised body...

very informative and interesting. I don't even have a van, but is great to find out about this!

I wish my mrs was as useful. This one is a keeper
The issues were having with the rear panel is that you push the inner pin.. (can slightly see the outline) push that in and it releases from the rear

That is so cooooool.. Not interested in a vanbuild, but it's so great to watch.. Thank you.👍🏾
Glad you’re enjoying it! Can’t blame you for not being interested in doing one either, it was a lot harder than we ever imagined 😆
@@TheWholeWorldorNothing Absolutely. But thank you.!
No problem! 😀
Great video
Can you tell me where I can buy some of those clips, thanks!
A timely intervention! Nearside worse due to pickup of more salt etc on verges.
Proper van!
Ah right! That will explain it then. We did wonder about that 😀

Yes definitely take a look at the sills! Especially if it’s a second hand older one. 👍

Ah thank you 😊
Does anyone know whether the rear panels (the ones behind the rear wheels) needs any welding when they're replaced?
So amazing guys
Thanks! 😀
Interesting half way in and the only tiny rust spot is located where it could not have been caused by the factory holes for the plastic

Gracias por la información no sabía que podía entrar el agua por hay saludos 🇨🇺
¡Sí! Es muy común y un gran problema 👍
Every sprinter should havd come with a free mig welder
